- On 23 November 1996, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 is forced to ditch after running out of fuel. The aircraft breaks up as the wings hit the water, killing 125 people. The aircraft had been hijacked and ran out of fuel because the hijackers did not believe the pilot's insistence that there was not enough fuel aboard to make it to the hijackers' planned destination, Australia.

3 total hijackings, one of them ends in a crash, and you still continue to fly? And with the same airline those 3 hijackings took place?? You sir, have balls of steel!!
Why do we use balls as a symbol of fearlessness. Balls are delicate little things and need jock straps and protection cups for athletics...
@@Doriesep6622 i guess they mean by this phrase that, even if it's slammed against the wall it'll still function.

He isn't going to let hijackers scare him into walking away from something he loves which is flying. It must have been almost a routine in his country that is why😂
ikr thats crazy.
It's sad that a man with only one arm, was the only one that was willing to try to take on the highjackers. May he R.I.P. ⚘
You have to remember that hijackings before 9/11 were treated much differently. Prior to flight 96, it was unheard of to use a plane like a projectile to take down a building. Hijackings were usually done by people looking for money (a la something like DB Cooper), or holding the plane, passengers, and crew hostage (like that one air alegeirs flight) or to defect/ seek asylum. They were treated like hostage situations. If you were on a hijacked plane, the advice was to sit back, relax, and wait until the plane landed, and possibly enjoy your unplanned trip to Cuba.
9/11 changed that, partially because it wasn’t a hostage situation but also because of newfound responses to hijackings. The US in particular was much more keen on shooting down hijacked planes, no matter the circumstance. It turned from being treated as a hostage situation into a terrorist attack.
Before, terrorist attacks with planes were always bombings, not rammings (think the Pan-Am flight over Scotland). 9/11 inspired a bunch of copycat attacks, so hijackings became much more dangerous.
@@Kaanfight Well in this situation the pilot had told the passengers that they were going to crash land. He said to overcome the hijackers, yet only one man was willing to attempt it. I don't care if it was pre 911 or not. Maybe if "real men" had acted, then the pilot wouldn't have had to struggle with the hijacker at the end, and would have been able to land on a runway, saving more lives.
@@hummingbird2254 actually English language isn't same everywhere in the world. European and American English is completely different from African English and its pronunciation. The passengers didn't get the clear message from the captain as describe by the high ranked American passenger. European and Americans English are understood well by South East Asians also because of the era of colonisation, but African (mainly middle and South portion) and South American English are completely different. This difference also led to crash of an Avianca (Columbian) flight where pilots couldn't properly inform the air traffic controllers about their fuel emergency.
@@Kaanfight you described everything extremely well, but I want to differ in one place only. In US, hijacked planes aren't immediately shot down. Yes, at least 2 fighter jets are sent to evaluate the situation, to see if the pilots are in a situation to respond to basic instructions by very basic wingtip movements. Also from it, hijackers get some psychological messages like the pilots aren't alone up there, and close eyes of law enforcement and air force are monitoring the situation closely and very seriously. Ultimately the jobs of the fighters are to guide the aeroplane outside US airspace if the hijacking has nothing to do with US governments and have enough fuel to do so or if required to guide it to land to a nearby airport safely. There is no way a fighter jet will shoot down a hijacked passenger airliner. Only if situation like 9/11 emerges, the fighters may be ordered to shoot it down. But its extremely unlikely to happen.
If you want more detailed knowledge about interception of passenger airliners ( either hijacked or not) by military fighter jets, you may visit the channel of mentour pilot. It's well described there.
@@prabuddhabose9045 I’m African, English is really the same everywhere even if it’s heavily accented, it is also clear that that pilot spoke clear English, I feel as though your comment is rather condescending. Ikr
I mean, they didn't think to at least watch the fuel gauge to see if it was dropping at a rate proportional to what the pilot claimed, to verify the truth?? They clearly didn't want a better life - or, really, life - THAT badly. Smh.
They're uneducated, what did you expect from them? They had no idea how a plane worked. How many people would just assume the plane was always full on fuel? That's how cars work for most people - how often do you see people calculating how much fuel they need per trip, and then fuelling up just enough for it?
But we who are educated can guess that less fuel means more efficiency, so we would accept the pilot's response - hell, we'd look into it ahead of time and would know not to try to hijack a plane with a route that short. Well, we wouldn't hijack a plane at all.
They were running in fear, and had no knowledge or power. They could've been suppressed by a determined group of passengers even, it was just 3 men lightly armed.
Same here OP. People like them can either be entertainment, or a source of frustration.
How dreadful to have saved an extra 60-80 people only for them to drown in their life jackets, because of confusion/panic. So many more people could have survived. Tragic. The pilot did an extraordinary job, especially in his circumstances. RIP.
There was another plane crash where everyone on board survived the crash but died of carbon monoxide poisoning/fire. They all tried to run out of the front door, which was damaged during the crash and wouldn't open. It was a small aircraft with 1 front and 1 back exit and the co-pilot who acted also as a stuart died like 2 meters from the door at the back after abandoning the damaged front door and fighting against the passengers pushing towards the front door.

As an Ethiopian who lived to witness that tragedy, I still feel the pain of those who lost their loved ones. Captain Abate did the best he could to minimise the damage, and he did a marvellous job. We all respect him for his outstanding efforts. Correction on Mo Amin's accident that made him lost an arm; it was not a bomb explosion, it was an explosion on an artillery depot on 4 June 1991.
The pilot absolutely did everything he could in such a irrational situtation created by the terrorists, and he, along with the rest of the crew, deserve to be commended for their efforts. With that said though, I feel terrible for the people who, most likely in a panic or out of ignorance, inflated their lifejackets before leaving the plane. Awful way to die, especially considering they most likely could have been saved. R.I.P.
Besides the panic during that horrible moment, not paying attention during a preflight instruction is one major problem. It is always advisable to listen to those instructions in every flight even if you hear them before.
I tend to lean towards the majority of ppl inflating early due to panic. Some were probably out of ignorance.
They should actually make sure to stress that point during the safety check before the flight. But then again....most pay no attention to that when its happening.

@@tilethio It honestly baffled me that so many inflated their life-jacket, given it's mentioned on every flight NOT to inflate it inside the place, I know it was out of fear and stress but... The amount of lives that could've been saved if they all worked together and listened...
I'm imagining myself in such a situation, will I scream? No, freaking out and stressing will exhaust my energy, and will lower my chance of survival, will I be nervous? Of course! But it's proven time and time again that, as long as it isn't a catastrophic crash, where nobody has a chance to survive, I rather have everyone remain calm, collected, and ready to leave the moment the plane hit the water.
Again... I won't blame them for freaking out, it usually happens naturally, you can't do much against the fear of dying.

MaydDay is the best series of Aviation disasters. I mean, I think so..
Finally there's a full deco of this flight, the only one I've ever seen was the real video of few seconds of the plane crashing
I really want to thank
Wonder for sharing the heroic story of Ethiopian pilots. The graphics and images used in the documentary take you back to the actual time and it felt like we were watching it in real time. The courage of the captain is amazing. I just wish all passengers took the captain's orders not to inflate their life jackets before the impact; many more souls would have been saved. May God rest the souls of passengers who died in heaven.
I think I watched this documentary already but imma watch again cuz i love watching these type of content
More than 500 views in 8mins,like we all just waiting fr our Thursday dinner every week😀😀😂😂😂😂at restaurant wonder, this has to be the most loyal subscribers ever

@@sarahvand3628 haha
Really breaks my heart, but cheers to pilot
Happy this episode is back for free use been a long time since I first viewed it
Amazing how people survived
Also I love how they TRUST the inflight magazine
It’s a magazine not a experienced pilot who knows about the plane
Ikr
I hope they didn't read SkyMall
God bless this captain, he had someone up above watching over him throughout his life
Thanks to the pilots! 🙏🏽
These hijackers have the worst case of denial. It’s sad that no one helped the cameraman.
I watched 3 of these and it’s now midnight I may or may not be addicted
I have been waiting for this particular episode for a while now
I saw it 15 years ago.
@@nate2611 good for you
The woman who filmed the crash at first thought that it was a stunt performance so she decided to record it, not realizing that it'll crash
Who in their right mind would think a passenger jet would casually perform stunts near a beach full of tourists!? Eh, the world is strange.
@@ShaOryDow who knows
She actually thought it was an air show for tourists
its really satisfying to see pilots and passengers in interviews , it means they survived
amazing heroic and tragic story, fantasitc pilot! no ptsd for this pilot he's a rock!!
It's miraculous that anyone survived a ditching. Amazing flying.
Those 3 men were so evil.
It's one thing for them to hijack a cargo aircraft and when they realize that they won't make it to their intended destination and will crash, they decide to die and not care about the lives of the 2 or 3 pilots, but for them to not care about the lives of 172 other people is even beyond evil.
Praise to the heroic efforts of Captain Leul Abate and First Officer Yonas Mekuria and RIP to the 122 innocent people that died on this flight.
I would use "idiots" or seriously illiterate
Well how will they get on without people knowing
they didn't have any stuff they only used stuff on the plane besides the ski mask and jackets
Exactly. It's sick.
They were fools, as many criminals tend to be. They knew full well the intended destination of the flight, and it would be immediately clear based on the route that the plane did not have nearly enough fuel to make that trip they desired. But they were morons so they never knew how to make that sort of connections in their head. A plane is a plane, it must be able to fly anywhere, right?
Their ignorance and selfishness costed all those lives, including their own. They plotted for freedom, and received death.
i just broke into goosebumps at the sight of the actual crash
Let's gooo! I've been waiting all day.
