- On 22 November 2003, shortly after takeoff from Baghdad, Iraq, an Airbus A300B4-200F cargo plane was struck on the left-wing by a surface-to-air missile disabling the hydraulic flight control systems. The pilots achieved something incredibly unique in successfully landing the plane using only the engines, a feat that has never been done before.

I've binge-watched all of the Mayday videos over the last 3 days, and when I finished S3E1 last night at 2am, I felt so empty. When would Wonder upload? Should I stay faithful to this channel and wait for them to upload, or let my gluttony overcome me and watch the rest of the episodes on other channels? I fell asleep, troubled by my new addiction to this series and sad uncertainty of this contentless void. And then it happens, right after I meeting. I log on to RUclips and there the thumbnail was, shining bright-Wonder has uploaded!

If that journalist said anything against them. She wouldn’t be giving this interview. She did what she had to do to survive and keep her coworkers alive.
I'm really sad the journalists are criticized for not doing more to stop them. I can honestly say I would not have done anything different in their position. The terrorists would have killed them and fired on the plane anyway I think. And I think anyone criticizing them is a hypocrite - maybe one in a million people would have actually tried to stop the terrorists.

Kudos to the FO for telling the Captain that they were wrong to try a landing on that first run, and kudos to the Captain for listening to his FO. Excellent communications that likely saved their lives.
*This is easily one of the greatest feats in airmanship in our lifetime.* In an active war zone, they safely landed an elderly aircraft with zero control surfaces, severe structural damage, leaking fuel, ON FIRE, and still being shot at. INCREDIBLE

That Japan Airlines flight that lost hydraulics and hit a mountain.
If only they'd thought of using the engines to regain control in the beginning, I wonder if they'd have actually made it.
@@DiscoTimelordASD they did use differential thrust, the capitan noticed that if he increased thrust the nose would rise, and if he reduced thrust, the nose would drop. their issues increased when they lowered the flaps because when they did that their 747 became harder to control and began loosing altitude just as they where passing through a mountainous area, which lead to their demise. It should also be noted that the capitan who was in United 232 and helped the pilots was studying JAL123 and thus knew how differential thrust would affect planes.
@@DiscoTimelordASD many other experienced pilots tried to fly the same plane incident in the simulator and couldn't even get close at all to 30 minutes. The fact that the pilots of JAL 123 actually flew the plane for so long is a small miracle compared to the tragedy that came afterwards. The point is, there was no way to salvage the plane, and the fact that it flew for so long is astonishing.

I've wondered many different scenarios and possibly successful outcomes for this flight over the years now (autistic problems) and you've given me the answers I've always wanted: they were always doomed.
I was very short sighted by just comparing it to that flight that lost hydraulics when a terrorist group shot a missile at the plane and got the wing because they actually landed.
Different planes, different scenarios.

The DHL Baghdad Shoot-Down is a masterclass in crew resource management :
-The F/E kept those engines running and lowered the gear manually.
-The F/O supported the Captain, giving him info and advice, most especially on final.
-The Captain controlled the aircraft with the throttles masterfully.
Take away ANY of those things and the plane crashes.

The captain also deserves credit for TAKING the advice of the FO. The captain accepted that he, the captain, was wrong and would have to do a long final, as his less-experienced subordinate suggested. That applied humility was CRM done right, as well.
I love it when documentaries do reconstructions of original scenes. Not only does it feel like watching a movie, but I feel like I'm learning something new.

I remember watching these episodes a while back and yeah, that's the gist of it. If I remember correctly the next episode is the Japan air flight this episode talked about
there is also flight 705 it's also a cargo jet it's strange how there are two cargo jets that manage to land yet the got injured and lost control

@@macaylacayton2915 i mean, even the pilots on japan air 123 definitely do deserve a medal, as they literally held a 747 without any hydraulics in the mountains for 30 minutes. a lot survived from the initial crash but died because the rescue team took bloody 14 hours to save them :(

To a plane who got hit directly with an missile and survived odds against physics entirely is impossible, and yet that plane survived is just a anomaly itself.
Congratulations to the pilots who pulled off the impossible.
The plane is currently stored. Though it hasn’t flown since this incident and hasn’t been repaired.

Well, they expect their planes to be used outside of warzone for commercial use, so the hydraulic system failing is infinitely close to zero in normal circumstances.
It's probably even lower chances than 1 in a million, but the fix is all software. The computer already exists, it's already capable of changing throttle inputs. All it literally needs is software, and an emergency button/toggle switch the pilots press to let the computer know to use that software instead of the standard software, to use the engines instead of the control surfaces.
This technology could have saved lives in other situations too, not just loss of all hydraulics. Like the Alaska airlines plane that crashed off the coast of California.

Despite how this documentary made it sound, that 2nd Siuox City airplane that crashed due to lack of hydraulics was actually amazingly controlled by the pilots, considering what they were dealing with. This documentary made it sound like a disaster (which it kinda was) but in fact they saved 184 lives and were hailed as heroes - and the crew survived. People have done amazing things during disasters. I guess that's why I'm hooked on these crash documentaries.
At the end when the F/O, F/E, and the Captain were hugging was really wholesome
Give that Captain a f****** medal and his pension and a stiff drink. He had to learn a new way to fly an airplane while flying it and managed to land with no hydraulics u******** believable

I have watched many, many documentaries about airplane incidents and I can say what these three guys have accomplished is the most incredible feat of skill in aviation history.
Imagine criticizing the journalist if she retaliated, there would’ve been consequences
She and the photographer would have been statistics. They were in a bad situation and did what they needed to do to survive. And most importantly, we get another angle to the story that would have otherwise been silenced.
And why was she there in the first place?
To get a Pulitzer prize? Or to give a platform to such people who gladly use the publicity and try to do even more because of the said publicity?
In a way, she facilitated the circumstances for that to happen.
No one, at least not me, should expect her to try to stop the terrorists, but at the same time, she stepped into the puddle the moment she went there. So getting out of it dry is not a possibility either.
@@Lina-lq7jm journalists have to remain neutral. They have to follow the instructions of the terrorists that invited them or they won't be invited back. Those types of interactions give insight into the terrorist operations and mindset. If the terrorists wanted to, they could publish their own propaganda online. By reaching out to international media they're attempting to legitimize their efforts, but the affect is usually the opposite. The video of the terrorists bragging about mass murder and attempting to kill civilians in the aircraft is not going to win over anyone with a conscience.

And I was never criticizing her not doing something while being there - a fool understand that if she tried, she would have died. What I criticize is this chase for fame and money that lead to go there, especially since any normal person would know that if you give them a platform, they will use it for their own gains.

If intimidation is the main goal they can do that enough without reporters through committing acts of terror. They aren't really trying to reach international audiences and scare them by giving interviews, rather than to show they have weapons, power, organization. They're seeking validation and an equal platform to engage the political world. While they're at it, they're showing off to try and recruit more like-minded people. The journalist is not the problem. They're just shedding light on the situation in an impartial manner.
It's also good to let your enemy have the freedom to speak their mind. People deserve to see what they're really about. To hear both sides of the argument. To see the evil actions committed by childish men. It's not like they're capable of justifying their actions. It does more damage to their reputation than it gives them a platform to achieve anything. They appear completely deranged bragging about mass murder in this video.
Journalists don't chase "fame and money". I've met several journalists who work in war zones. They are assigned to go there. It's a job. Any financial gain they receive is certainly not worth the risk they take on. They do it because they have a passion for spreading awareness of current events. Their reporting will impact how we record history. It's a job most want to get done quickly so they can be reassigned somewhere safer. Most journalists write books to make money or achieve fame and there's nothing wrong with that. It's a great contribution to society.

It's incredible the chain of knowledge that led to this relatively safe landing.
1985: JAL 123, in a desperate move, tries to use the engines to control their plane, and it amazingly works somewhat. Unfortunately, an unforgiving terrain area and the near total loss of their vertical stabilizer is too much to overcome.
Dennis Fitch hears about their efforts, and looks at controlling a DC-10 with only engines on a simulator.
1989: United 232, with Denny Fitch on board, has its hydraulics completely fail due to an exploded engine. Denny offers his assistance as an instructor pilot, and takes control of the throttles. He nearly lands that plane safely, only being screwed by a badly timed phugoid.
Al Haynes, the captain of United 232, gives various speeches about his experience on United 232. While his speeches are more about the use of CRM and how it save many of his passengers, his method of talking about it through United 232 gives more pilots at least an idea on what to do when faced with no hydraulics. One of those speeches was in 2002, and one of the pilots in the audience that got that idea was Éric Gennotte.
2003: Éric Gennotte is the captain of a DHL flight that loses hydraulics because of a missile strike. He would recall United 232, and has an idea on what to do. Partly because of this, he is able to land safely.

@@potato1907 it's impossible to fly without any vertical stabilizer if the plane is designed with it. JAL still had some of it
DHL 1611 was in a midair collision. I really don’t remember what part of it was hit. It’s a miracle when one plane is able to land after a midair collision. It sort of depends on what part is hit. Unfortunately, both planes involved in that midair collision crashed into the ground.

The only reason this amazing landing didn't get much attention from the media was because this was a cargo aircraft with only 3 people on board, if this was a passenger aircraft with hundreds of people on board it would be called a miracle landing and would get a lot of attention. The pilots and passengers would have been interviewed and talked about for months in the media after the incident, unfortunately boxes and mail don't talk so the media gave this almost zero coverage. If i was a billionaire and owned my own large jet liner i would find and hire these guy's in a heartbeat to fly my aircraft, they showed some amazing flying skills with this landing.

Pretty sure this is cargo plane with only so much flight crew only and no passenger. It is impossible to have that much death count unless it hits civilian area.
These poor guys - they're just taking off to deliver some mail and end up getting hit by a missile, manage to land a crippled plane that has a wing on fire while learning to fly such a plane with limited controls, and then do an emergency landing that's already rough only to end up in an area that's full of who knows what explosive devices.
It's rather phenomenal that everyone plus the mail survived this.

Can I just say I’m impressed that they didn’t trigger any mines while landing the plane, they got super lucky that they didn’t trigger one imagine what that would have done to the landing gear.
I was actually wondering the same thing myself... Nearly spit up my coffee once I heard they landed on unexploded ordinance. I can't tell if they had really freaking good luck to survive it... Or really bad luck just to go from one life threatening situation to another. Heh, maybe after pulling off that landing; the explosives thought the pilots were so badass- that they were simply to scared to explode.

I usto watch mayday a long time ago until I watched every episode on RUclips. I just happen to get a suggestion to your channel and I haven’t stopped watching. My father flew 727’s for Eastern airlines when I was growing up. I flew all the time. I was only a part of one emergency. My father was the captain and they lost an engine. He got us safely to the ground. I was so proud of him that day. I always loved hearing him announce who he was and who else was in the cockpit. Watching your videos makes me think of him. Although some are horrible and very sad with lose of life. I love how the pilots save there passengers and if they can’t they fight till the last seconds of there lives. 💕 (I miss you dad. R.I.P. )

My daughter's father left from Miami to Baghdad to work on repairing this exact airplane just a few days after she was born. I was so mad at him for going....didn't mind the checks tho, lol. All these years later watching this gives me a huge sense of pride that our family could be a part of such an experience. I really never knew what a harrowing time the pilots and flight engineer had on their hands.

The greatest display of airmanship and piloting ever. No exaggeration here. What this crew pulled off with no hydraulics (therefore no real control) is remarkable. Funnily enough and with a perverted irony, the very thing that saved this crew, the A300/A310's extreme pitch power couple is responsible for catching out and killing so many others crews/pax.
This is why I'll always support Outback Steakhouse. They fly their personal cargo planes into warzones and deliver soldiers steaks and Outback. They delivered twice to us in about 10 months in Afghanistan. never gave two thoughts about our mail though. take alot of guts to willingly go into that

Wow. It’s been a long long time since I have eaten at an Outback Steakhouse.
I will eat at one next time I can to say thank you to them for taking care of our troops!
As a kid, I ate at one. As when a waitress was walking past carrying multiple plates of steak…my dad moved his chair suddenly (he was shifting and did not see her) and tripped her!!!
He immediately apologized and told the manager it was his fault, not the waitress.
The manager took it in stride, and comforted the upset waitress.
As a “joke”, he personally escorted the waitress to ensure the new cooked steaks made it safely this time…….and no chairs moved suddenly to trip her!😅

How were people mad at the journalist?! “Excuse me, Mr. Terrorist, could you please not do this? It’s not right.” Did people think he would just stop if she asked? How ridiculous.
I knew they made it but my stomach was still in a knot until they were safely away from the plane, phew what an episode!

This is one of the best Mayday episodes and flight stories period. Imagine fighting for your life in one of the hardest flying scenarios that no one's succeeded in before. Two Belgian pilots and a Scottish engineer struggling in front of Australian ATC, US pilots guiding and cheering them on with "they're up there doing everything they can" and "c'mon buddy". The pilot also knowing of the crew of United 232 as well as having the spirits of the crew of Japan 123 behind him really illustrate the tense situation they were in. All of aviation were with them in these moments. Bravo to pilot and crew. With their skills, they should truly be responsible for passenger flight instead of mail.
I've been binging on airplane miraculous saves documentaries, this is without a doubt the craziest. Landed that plane on wits alone. Truly incredible.
this definitely beats the miracle on the Hudson to be honest, that was just the engines going out, THIS WAS A MISSILE! though both could be considered as occurring in the extreme conditions

I wonder what role them not having passengers had. I can imagine wanting to make sure your passengers are ok can give you the adrenaline to fight but also the additional responsibility may create additional stress in an already stressful situation.

It wasn't just A2A they were firing at planes departing BIAP, either; there was small arms and mortars. We had to wear full battle rattle on board.

The simulation for hydraulic faillure was done without the irregular combustion in the engines which made the airbus above Bagdad go about it's bizar course i think. Great to see my compatriots be so inventive to have landed this airbus. Thanx for yet another great episode !

The pilot and crew were amazing. I just watched a different episode where the pilot slept and the crew did almost nothing except crash the plane. It drove me nuts.

44:31 WHAT? I CANT BELIEVE A PILOT SURVIVED THAT CRASH!!!! The pilots always seem to be the most vulnerable in these situations and end up almost always dying so its shocking to see that a pilot survived that awful crash. Hopefully he doesn't live with any guilt seeing how its absolutely not his fault and its a miracle that he was able to save so many people.
I believe both pilots and the third off duty pilot who came to aid them survived despite the cockpit being torn off and thrown away from the crash. It was such a bad state that rescue crews checked it last, believing no one could survive in there.

@@stevenyu2684 it’s not that they didn’t think anybody could survive in it - they would’ve checked it out, regardless - it’s that there was nothing to identify it as the cockpit. They thought it was just an avionics section with nobody in it. (Per Capt. Haynes’s presentation at NASA)
Edit: three pilots _and_ the flight engineer - not only all survive, all returned to flying duties
