no ones talking about the flight engineer. critically injured right in the beginning on the verge of death, and yet held down the attacker down the entire time. more than half dead and yet saved the plane from being taken over. amazing.
so amazing actually. so much respect for him and the co pilot and pilot for cooperating greatly even after their severe injuries.

You sure got that right.
That fight or flight adrenaline pushes through your body like a tsunami. That the possibility of flight is rendered impossible, the fight response would become intense.
The only thing I can reference to prove the incredible strength adrenaline causes is the mother, who's son was working on his car in the garage. The jack somehow collapsed and the entire weight of the car was crushing his chest to his thighs.
His mom had stepped out there and saw her son trapped. She screamed, a neighbor across the street in his own garage saw what was going on and started to run over. Just as he reached their driveway he saw the mom lift the car up and off her son. He knew what he needed to do and raced in and pulled the woman's son from under the car mom was holding up.
He got him out and mom had to let go.
Her son has some internal injuries, nearly all his ribs were cracked or broken, one of his hips was broken, add his upper thigh was broken. He survived but healing was lengthy.
As for mom; she didn't get out unscathed. Ligaments we're torn in her elbow, and shoulder. Muscles in her other arm and pectoral muscles were pulled severely. In her left hand cartilage, and bones broke from the compression, and tendons were damaged.
She healed but had lingering problems with her left hand.
She'd do it again though, I guarantee it. No parent would not try to save their kid.
Oh yeah, her son was 30, she was 55!

The fact the captain was able to safely land a plane that was overweight while being severly injuried and without his glasses is incredible.

The fact that a fellow coworker made it on the plane with weapons is just mind blowing. These aircrafts are worth millions one would think the airlines would have thought about this scenario possibly unfolding. One things for sure I bet they have heightened security for everyone boarding a plane now even the crew. Sad that it took an incident like this to make changes.
The part that hurt me the most is that three passionate and heroic pilots couldn’t fly anymore after this incident .. it pretty much ended their flying career 😞

The amount of rage that threatened to boil over in my mind when Calloway screamed "get your foot off me, you're hurting me!" after having bludgeoned all three crew members to the brink of death with no remorse.. I have no words. Grateful for everyone else in this story who were alert, did their jobs right and even went above and beyond to make sure the plane landed as safely as possible with no lethality.

This is an example of a pilot who didn't just learn to fly a plane but thoroughly understood everything about flying and the machine he was in. Also what a testament to hiring ex-military pilots.

This pilot was not only ex military, but an ex military fighter pilot.
Throughout the maneuvers, I was marveling that the cargo stayed in place.

Wow, this is like straight out of a movie. The 2 persons battling the bad guy in the back, risking their lifes, while the person in the cockpit is doing insane stunts including almost turning the airplane on its back. I'm so glad everyone survived and the airplane managed to withstand those manuvers.

I started watching this with the intention of playing fortnite and I ended up exiting FN.
Except Hollywood would change the complexions of those involved, as it has in fact done in all fact based accounts where the bad guy is a poc, and even when the good guy is the wrong color (white). Hundreds of history pieces have been distorted in this fashion by Hollywood.
I will never complain if FedEx loses or delays my package ever again.

Everyone's talking about the people. No one going to realize how well that plane held up? Performing evasive maneuvers meant for a fighter jet and tires holding up during landing. The engineers/maintainance workers need a raise.
The pilots got fired which is really sad because if they didnt do their actions the plane would have crashed

But I'm really happy they managed to not only survive this incident but also recover from serious brain injuries. I've seen people not fully recover from much less, when it comes head trauma, so I'm glad they were able to.

I have to play devil’s advocate here just a bit. First, let me make it very clear that I’m extremely sorry for what those pilots endured and as a result, what they’ve lost forever. I cried watching them at the very end. However, Mr. Calloway had a mental illness that kept him from having the ability to cope with life’s tragedies that most people handle just fine. He also suffered great loss, albeit due to his own actions, nevertheless with lifelong horrible consequences. What kind of relationship do you think he has with his children as a result of what he did? They also suffered

Saddest thing, All three of them were never Class 1 medically cleared to fly again. This part is the worst thing that can happen to a Pilot.

@@phr3ui559 When you become a pilot, you are given a medical certificate Class 1, 2, or 3. If your medical status changes, your certificate class will likely lower, putting your career in jeopardy.

The amazing thing is that the DC-10 involved in this incident is 36 years old now and still flying for FEDEX to this day.

This incident among others is why I'll forever die on the hill that the DC-10's reputation was undeserved. The cargo door got fixed, and the incidents that it's been involved in since have been through no fault of its own (maintenance, terrorist attacks, bad piloting, etc.)

Where did i say the DC-10 was dangerous?. The DC-10 became a great workhorse and tough aircraft, it's one of my favorite aircraft.
The captain is 1 of the best pilots I've ever seen. He flew a jumbo jet as if it was a fighter jet in a war. I hate he went through this but he saved so many lives. ✈🇺🇸

Not to mention any lives on the ground had the plane crashed.

I believe there's a couple that don't require it, but for instance if I buy a car with cash (versus a loan) I only need one type of insurance that protects other people, whether injured on the ground or have property damage or in a car. Meanwhile there is a second type that you normally need if you do a lease or buy a car on a loan. I need to carry it for $100,000, even though my car was worth $35,000 brand new.
It's simply to make sure you can't drive off after an accident, and the other coverage is to protect your car. But if I cancel my insurance (all of it, or just the part that protects other people) then the state is notified. If I don't turn in my license plates too, taking the car off the road, I get charged like $8 a day for going uninsured. And I believe after a while it'll even require a new registration.
@@OfftheWallTales What @Divyansh is referring to is the same thing you are talking about. It’s called 3rd party insurance here. The first party insurance is not mandatory. So, it’s not necessary to insure your vehicles.
It’s abhorrent this man tried to take their lives, but it’s a travesty he took their livelihood. What an amazing story of three true professionals.
Severely, no doubt they're set for life, but damn, I'd want to have my own airplane(always have) still.

Not necessarily. It could've been the worst decision to fly it like a fighter jet. If you remember, this airplane was falling apart because of the crazy speeds it wasn't designed to handle. So in lieu of stable hand-to-hand combat and the uncertain risk that entails, he could've sent them all to certain death by playing fighter pilot in a cargo plane.

@@ohh2752 I think its because he is already maneuvering the plane for landing(going down).. auto pilot can be use when you are flying normally with height stable from the ground.

I worked for FedEx and it was because of this guy is the reason why FedEx discontinued the jump seat program which allows any FedEx employees to fly for free anywhere FedEx goes smh I hated him for this.

It's unfortunate that Calloway took away their careers in a selfish act, but given that it's possible he would've crashed the plane into the terminal, those three pilots sacrificed their careers to save dozens, if it not hundreds of lives.

@Ethan Aasen They suffered massive head trauma. Most high-profile jobs requiring you to operate heavy machinery and where you're responsible for the safety of other people have strict regulations on mental health.
For example if you have a history of epilepsy, you can't get a pilot's license, even if you're on medication. The risk is too high.
Commercial airline pilots must maintain a spotless mental health record.
Its incredibly selfish of Calloway such a coward. The three crew members are truly heros and I just glad they were able to stay alive.

You can hear Dave Sanders struggling to talk at many points in his interview. It’s terrible that the three of them were never able to fly again but they saved the lives of all the workers in the FedEx hub.
During his trial, Calloway attempted to invoke an insanity defense, but was found guilty of multiple charges, including attempted murder, attempted air piracy, and interference with flight crew operations. He received two consecutive life sentences with no chance of parole.

This is by far my favorite episode. These men are tough as NAILS! First, the second officer does (what they call) impossible maneuvers to help his crew, Then the pilot completes a CRAZY landing _without his glasses_ AND _with blood running into his eyes!_ People say there are no longer heroes. If anyone says that I'm showing them this video! These three men are MY heros.
Edit: Every time I have a bad day I come and watch this video, and its like my problems are a grain of sand compared to what they went through. I hope you guys know that you're still my heroes!

I know everyone is giving that flight crew much deserved respect for their heroism, but can we also give a moment of respect for the aircraft for its performance in this event? And in the aftermath McDonnell Douglas actually met with Tucker for a debriefing for how he was able to handle that DC-10 without losing the aircraft because he handled the majority of the flying during the attack.

It's nothing short of a miracle that a plane notorious for so many problems survived such an incident.
FedEx Flight 705 was the DC-10's ultimate redemption story. After so many crashes from losing cargo doors, hydraulics, engines, etc. in the 70's and 80's. The DC-10, with all of the lessons learned from the past, performed beyond what it's designed to do and saved countless lives.

I cannot even begin to imagine what they went through. They saved so many people. They are true heros. Absolutely astounding how they pulled through this without allowing the attacker to take over.
On a side note, this documentary is incredibly well done as usual. I hope Wonder never stops putting these out.
The show is actually called Mayday (Air Crash Investigation). You can see this in the opening and see Mayday Season 3 Episode 3 in the video title. Look that up if you want to see more of the episodes in which many are not yet out on this channel.

@@veliki_dlek The ending of this documentary actually talked about how the hijacker might crush the plane to the headquarter of the company, if he did have full control of it, as a revenge. (Just a possibility but very chilling!)

They are Hero’s. FEDEX should not allow anyone on their planes without security checks. The same as regular passengers. Also the cockpit door should always be locked.

Most cargo planes today don’t have cockpit doors at all because usually it’s just the flight crew and the relief pilots on long hauls.
I am personal friends with his son. The man is a great guy, loving husband/father and has a solid career. What his father did was completely nuts.
We are not our parents mistakes. I’m glad to hear his son is such a great human being and wonderful father.

These pilots are absolute heroes, working as a team to save each other, and probably untold numbers of people on the ground, possibly Fedex or other structures, etc. Just incredible to survive this cowardly ambush attack, attempted murder and attempted suicide.
It is so sad that these men can no longer fly. I hope they and their families were well taken care of by Fedex.
The pilots should absolutely be allowed to fly again, but only as co-pilots, so the captain or pilot would be able to help if they had a seizure or something

@@ohh2752 The plane was in an unstable state, low altitude, not flying steadily. Autopilot wouldn't work at that point because it can't calculate something as complex as the situation at hand.

He was going to get fired. And if you paid attention, there are two contradicting stories on why he did it. One story is that he wanted to give the life insurance TO HIS KIDS (so I don’t know why you are bringing the wife into this) and the other story is that he did it so he could crash the plane into the fedex building. Yes. There are evil people out there, ex wives, family coworkers etc. It’s what you do about it that counts.

Watching the pilot casually talking about how he had the airplane TURNED OVER IN THE AIR just blows my mind.
It's surprising - planes that are in rollovers or in extreme angles are usually the planes that are stalling and about to crash. The crew was able to control these extreme plane rotations without going into a stall!
And with serious, critical injuries that could easily have been fatal, too! These guys - that co-pilot especially - are just beyond amazing given their circumstances.

It's a significant feat of airmanship walking the razor's edge and pushing the limits of the DC-10 to the verge and keeping it controllable at the same time. Especially walking that narrow line whilst having a severe head injury and only really able to effectively move his left side.

Tucker's fast thinking after being viciously assaulted is just extraordinary...the kind of thing you only hear about in Hollywood films, made real. What an amazingly brave, tenacious crew! Glad Calloway will never see the outside of a jail cell: such incredibly depraved disregard for the lives of fellow pilots.
He'll never see this either. I was in Federal prison and they don't give you cell TV's like they do in state prisons. Kind of a shame, because just acting this out looked exhausting. I'd imagine the director kept saying "I didn't say cut! Keep fighting!"

I am absolutely awestruck by the sheer bravery, resilience and heroism of that flight crew. To survive this calamity, and then to have justice meted out is no small feat. How appalling that this saga was due to one delusional person's warped attempt to obtain financial gain. Thankfully everyone survived, and the perpetrator is incarcerated for the rest of his life. You think you've seen and heard everything there is, until you hear of a cataclysm like this. It keeps you humble. Please be safe out there.
Not at all pitying him because what Calloway did was idiotic beyond all compromise, but his motive for financial gain wasn’t necessarily for himself, but for his children in order to secure their future through funding for higher education.
There are much better and much more sane and logical means of doing so, but given Calloway’s history, he likely wouldn’t have known and probably carried so much rage against his now-former employers, that he ended up resorting to such an act of attempted air piracy and homicide.
I feel sad for Sanders and his crew as they were damaged so badly in the incident, both physically and mentally, to the point where they can’t return to commercial flying (not too sure on recreational flight but it’s probably not possible besides certain conditions) but their act of airmanship in order to survive was nothing short of astonishing.
It is horrifying to think that there are a lot of people who would and will do this to someone/something, I hope you stay safe as well.

The DC-10 itself is it's own hero in it's right. It stuck together for it's crew under forces that normally would tear it apart. It went through maneuvers it wasn't not built to do, yet stuck together where it mattered the most. A lot of damaged happened to it both inside and out, but she held on.
The Lord kept it together.
That aircraft is still flying to this day for FedEx. Except the cockpit has been upgraded LCD screens and now it's only flown by a crew of 2 the flight engineer is not needed anymore, since the cockpit upgrade, since the upgrade the aircraft is called MD-10, instead of DC-10.

Dude changes his last will and testament, leaves it on his bed, writes a note to his ex-wife, and has to ask special permission to be on this particular flight, and he thought people were just gonna believe the crash was an accident? There's no way the life insurance would have been paid out in full.
Yeah, there’s a few inconsistencies with the theories put forth. I read through trial transcripts trying to figure out what the actual motive and plan was, but he didn’t share. He plead not guilty. Had a good legal argument too, but the Judge wasn’t going to let poorly written law get in his way.

It’s been a couple years so the exact phrasing might be off, but here’s the jist.
The big charge he had was a hijacking/piracy charge.
Part of the requirement for the charge was that he “take control, or attempt to take control of the plane.”
His lawyer argued all evidence and testimony points towards him never attempting to take actual control of the plane. Testimony showed he had the opportunity to do so, but never did. He simply beat the pilots.
The prosecution said they believed he intended to eventually crash the plane, but admitted there was no evidence he ever went for the controls, or directed the pilots to do anything with the plane.
The judge ended up ruling that while he didn’t try to control the plane directly, by attempting to stop the pilots from controlling the plane, by extension was taking control. So the judge allowed the charge to stand.
The problem is that’s clearly bad logic. If that were true, the idiots pointing laser lights at planes attempting to hit pilots eyes could be argued to be hijacking the plane.
People who act up, forcing the pilots to deviate from their route would be hijacking the plane.
It was one of those situations where we all know what he did should be illegal, but the laws at written are pretty bad.
Law regarding the sky is fairly new, and there are not a ton of incidents to test and shape the laws, so you run into technicalities like that.
Within the last few years some companies have started covering suicides. But you can’t add that clause to your policy today and off yourself tomorrow. You have to have an active policy for x amount of time.

The fact that a fellow coworker made it on the plane with weapons is just mind blowing. These aircrafts are worth millions one would think the airlines would have thought about this scenario possibly unfolding. The most scary part for me was that, he exceeded his flying hours by 1 minute, otherwise he would face only 2 persons and he could succeed; I think that 1 minute delay saved a lot of lives.

To the three men, the engineering and build quality of that plane, well done. What a hell of a challenge to overcome, disappointing but perfectly understandable as to why they won't fly again, absolute legends.

What he did was stupid but you are misrepresenting his motives. He did it to secure his children's future because I assume if he died on a company plane and he was successful at killing the crew so nobody else would know what he did, the company would have paid out his family a large sum of money most likely. Then life insurance, etc. If he got fired from Fedex, it would be all gone. So its not because he did not have money. Flight engineers get paid very well.
There's a whole back-story of what led up to his scheme. Calloway had done a couple of high-profile stupid moves at FedEx, including one where he'd impersonated another pilot and embarrassed the founder and CEO on a company-wide broadcast. That led to the top brass looking at him very closely, and found out a few lies on his resume. He was going to get questioned and most likely canned the next day, and this was a scheme to both strike back at FedEx (by doing a 9-11 on their main Memphis hub), while making sure his kids would get life insurance money by making the whole thing look like an accident. A Memphis reporter wrote a book called "Hijacked: the true story of the heroes of flight 705" that goes into what led up to the incident. Afterward, FedEx wanted the incident kept quiet, so they dumped a few million into getting that plane back in the air as soon as possible, even though they ended up rebuilding all of the flight control surfaces.

Watching this made me realize that not only that a crew can be creative in how they can stop a tragedy, but that even if a plane isn't built to perform certain maneuvers, that the "Genetics" of the plane shows that it has it's own inner strengths.

I knew the daughter of the FedEx head mechanic.
When I mentioned this flight….she knew EXACTLY what plane I was talking about.
Cost over a million to clean, repair (rivets popped, skin stretched, counterweights broke loose, and the gates needed to be checked for calibration) and they did a major overhaul while they were at it.
It’s a two seater (no flight engineer now).
There was blood EVERYWHERE. On the ceiling, walls, under seats, under panels, and soaked thru the floor.
It’s amazing no one bleed to death.
Bodily fluids (or any non aviation grade fluids) are bad for aircraft in general. So they decided to strip it out while they were at.
After 9/11, he is never getting out of prison.
Even Obama declined to give him a pardon.
There is a justified reason why sky piracy/ hijacking is not tolerated.

Yeah that pilot is incredible he helped to save his other crewmembers lives while being severely injured and barely able to hold consciousness.

The crew of this plane are truly incredible people! I feel so bad that their careers were so cruelly taken away from them. The resilience of these men is astounding. Post 9-11, Calloway would have been dead meat. Passengers have pounded down other pax who have had psychotic breaks and who have tried to enter the cockpit or to open a door. Then they keep going because adrenaline takes over. Plus military and law enforcement are instructed to "neutralize the subject" while he's still dangerous.

I knew the daughter of the head mechanic at fedex. Apparently she heard of this particular plane. It took over a million dollars to clean and repair EVERYTHING in that DC10.
Rivets had popped, counter weights broken off, the airframe had been stressed, and there was blood EVERYWHERE. There were even bloody footprints on the ceiling, blood under seats, and other unexpected places.
Since they had to tear everything out, the cockpit was converted into a two pilot cockpit instead of a 3 person cockpit.
The DC10 had a bad reputation due to “the door incidents” and only used for cargo delivery as a result.
I think this flight redeemed the plane in my opinion.
That DC10 went through stresses that would of given engineers nightmares.
It possible touched the sound barrier and pulled stunts no passages jet has been ever done (gone almost inverted).
Those pilots are true hero’s. They saved their own lives despite immense injuries and blood loss, landed that plane, and probably saved lives on the ground.
They may never be able to fly again…..but apparently FedEx is gonna make sure they are taken care of for life.
They probably saved fedexs reputation and prevented bankruptcy level lawsuits.

Upset member of the Public: Well my package arrived today in a very disheveled state and there appears to be blood all over it! I'm most upset by the unprofessionalism at FedEx not to mention that the package was meant to arrive a few days ago.
FedEx: "Well Mame now let me see... Oh yes! Your package was probably on one of our planes that had an attempted takeover...All three pilots were attacked and suffered severe head wounds as a disgruntled employee hit them over the head with a hammer whilst they were flying. They lost quite a lot of blood and were momentarily knocked out! They then managed to fight with their attacker for about 30 minutes whilst being hit a few more times whilst they wrestled with him. So yes there probably was a fair amount of blood splatter in that particular flight mame. And the package was most likely damaged as the plane was being placed into extreme g-force manoeuvres to help subdue the attacker.
