- When Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 departed from Addis Ababa on November 23, 1996, it was carrying 163 passengers and 12 crew members. Among them were an American diplomat, a legendary news cameraman, and a deadly plan.
Are you able to figure out what the cause of this crash was?
From Season 3 Episode 13 "Ocean Landing": Twenty minutes into the flight, the three young men rushed the cockpit and hijacked the aircraft. They demanded that the plane switch course to Australia - an 11-hour flight. It was a suicidal request - the plane had only three hours of fuel.
Captain Leo Abate had been hijacked twice before. When he was unable to convince the hijackers to change their destination, he developed a backup plan. Without their knowledge, he headed toward the tiny Comoros Islands. An airport there might be his last chance.

Yes 3 highjackers, plane run out of fuel in 1996🥺🥺🥺 side of Comoros
I think the hijackers wanted to go to Australia because they had more of there buddy's there
Is that an actual, real question?
Sounds like icing to me. I mean., what else could it be?

the fact that all the hijackers died and the captain survived has to be one of the sweetest forms of karma i've ever seen

Wow fact the pilot had no idea where Comoros was and still was able to locate it from a little book is astonishing. What a pro. He did a great job just lingering around the island. I feel like if they were further away from that island, it would have been even worse.
The pilot was a good person at heart.May God Bless Him.

This pilot is my hero! I can't help it. I am so touched with the bravery and the calm frame of his mind..when he was trying to knock sense into the minds of hijackers at the same time strategising on the best ways to save life. Of all the documentaries, i find this one most intriguing ❤
Surviving 3 hijacks..
"Succesfully" landing on water..
Manage to keep calm and seek help/plan under the pressure of 3 hijackers inside cockpit..
Landed near by island with people..

Tourist with boats to rescue everyone..

Hats off to you sir..
Well done for the people and tourist who rush to help the passengers of that plane to give first aid..
And best of all him and the copilot survived andbthe 3 hijackers died
Ya but half the innocent passengers died

For some reason the stupidity of the hijackers makes me more angry than if they had just been plain evil!
My kids are the age of the hijackers. I'm trying to picture them, barely capable of doing their own laundry or checking their own oil, hijacking a plane! I know one thing- there is NO negotiating with those mfs, not at that age.

@@GOLDVIOLINbowofdeath could you have done it better? Overspeed landings into water are practically a death sentence, having no instruments to top it off, this guy is a fucking legend and probably also quite lucky to have kept anyone alive through it. Also, a sizeable amount of people inflated their vests, something you're always told to not do since, as they explain very well here, it can stop you from being able to get out if water enters the cabin, but that's what happens when you don't listen to the pre-flight safety instructions and then are panicking when you get told to actually put the vest on, that's not something the pilot had or could have had any influence over. Saving almost a third of the people is, in my humble opinion, quite an outstanding outcome given the situation
edit: Wikipedia says the following (I don't have time to read the official report but you can if you wanna verify): "Many of the passengers survived the initial crash, but they had disregarded or did not hear Leul's warning not to inflate their life jackets inside the aircraft, causing them to be pushed against the ceiling of the fuselage by the inflated life jackets when water flooded in. Unable to escape, they drowned. An estimated 60 to 80 passengers, strapped to their seats, presumably drowned.[17][18]"

It's indeed a great lesson to learn. Thank you
True. But I thought the reason was that inflating the vest would make it harder to evacuate quickly -- not that it would push you to the top of the cabin when the plane sunk.

@@xclusivechu yup just like the passengers who stayed in their seats awaiting death.
This pilot is a super hero to survive 3 hijacking.... And saving his passengers lives too to his best... Bravo!!!!
Might God
The fact that that pilot experienced THREE hijackings is shocking.
In a lot of plane crashes it's quick, albeit horrible. Here, the passengers had to live through an entire flight fearing for their lives, knowing its most likely going down, then suffer a plane crash, then those who survived end up trapped and watch the water fill in the fuselage and drawn them, such an unimaginable drawn out death, RIP. It is not a surprise when the pilot called out for them to act, people didn't, despite knowing this is their best chance of surviving. Most people are too scared to fight, and even more scared to take lead. If a few got up, many will get up after, but you need those first few with the courage and initiative.
Captain Abate and the co-pilot surely saved the lives of those passengers who lived due to their experience in flying and dealing with the hijackers. Captain Abate beat the odds and was smart to try to ditch near the island. This is an amazing story. 👏 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🙏💖
The passengers were cowards (THE MEN)! Why didn't they react when the pilot asked them to engage the terrorists? I would be willing to give my life for women and kids in any situation. After 9/11 if I even think you're a terrorist I'm throwing hands immediately!
Absolutely!!!
True, he thought it wise that way coz he knew some passengers would survive by easily escaping through swimming in the water since it is not so deep towards the beach & also the fact that there would be some rescuers at the beach who were going to rescue the passengers in time since they would be near the crash scene. He was very smart indeed.
Yeah, sucks some of them died due to inflating their life jacket early. Something I've never thought about before, but now I know. If you're going to be in a plane crash this is a pretty good situation to be in. Out of fuel so no risk of a fire, crashing near a tourist beach. A high speed crash but not as high speed as it could be

I watched this with my kids, who are 16 and 18, and they cannot understand why the passengers or crew didn't try to overpower the hijackers. I think it's hard for the post-9/11 generation to imagine how different not only security was at airports and on airplanes, but also our mindset about hijackings.
Everyone just knew you cooperated with hijackers and followed their demands. And why not? Nine times out of 10, it worked. Plane lands, hijackers give up or are killed, and everyone's OK. Of course, everything changed after 9/11 -- actually, it changed DURING 9/11, when the passengers on Flight 93 knew their only hope was to rush the cockpit, and they fought back.
Today, everyone just knows you try and overpower the hijackers -- and that's usually what has happened in the few times someone has hijacked or otherwise threatened a flight since 2001.
Yes passengers are also willing to step in to subdue irrate, irrational and intoxicated passengers when staff are overwhelmed.
I think Flight 93 is why my young post-911 born gen think they should have fought back. I personally don't really blame the passengers as much anymore. It is scary being in a hijacking.
Using 911 with a lot of grammar to compensate the cowardice behaviour displayed on this flight, very funny😅.i was born way before the horrors of the 80s,90s,2000s,it's not a licence for cowardice behaviour
@@odemaj8605 So you read my comment and thought, "Aha! He's using 9/11 and grammar(???) to compensate for cowardice!"? That gap between what I wrote and what you think it meant is not only as wide as it could possibly be -- it's also downright bizarre.
And here I thought I was using grammar to make sure my writing made sense. You should try it sometime. Especially since your second sentence literally means that the year of your birth somehow made you ineligible to be a coward. I'm going to guess that's not what you meant.
Anyway, as for the point I think you were trying to make, no, I wasn't doing anything to compensate for cowardice because I didn't need to. It was a non-issue since cowardice had little to do with why people didn't fight back before 9/11. They cooperated with hijackers primarily because it was thought to give everyone the best chance of survival.
And history bore that out. Before 9/11, almost every hijacking where cooperation was employed resulted in the safe release of those on board. This flight was a rare exception, obviously, but you can't blame the passengers for that -- hindsight is 20/20.
@@RMR1 my meaning is simple, you claimed that pos911 generation might most likely lack the understanding as to why the passengers opted in doing nothing than doing something,
I didn't mean ineligibility but eligibility, having to experience indirectly aviation horrors of that time and using all those horrors as an excuse to mediate their cowardice is hillarious ,its much more easier to just say they were too frightened to react to the hijackers, don't make glorified excuses for them
I am so addicted to these videos and this channel. They are done so well. The narrator does such a great job too.
The pilot was just amazing! He saved many lives.

The crew did what they could in a very difficult situation with hijackers. Courage of the pilot and copilot, and yes the newsreporter were incredible. The passangers struggled with what to do. This was all before 9 11. God bless the people who lost their lives.
Agreed. What a tough situation.
Just to note: 9-1-1 as an emergency number originates in 1938. This crash happened in 1996. So it doesn't predate 9-1-1
But the sentiment remains the same. No-one would be able to help them if they called 9-1-1, as emergency services can't do much about a plane hijacking.
To stay calm and do what he did, Captain Leul Abate had to have a spine of steel. Especially knowing no one was coming to help. Massive respect.
@@asherscottLI think they meant 9/11 hijackings not 911 the emergency number
Same here, I am sure they meant the 9/11 hijackings on Sept 11th 2001
I think it was less of them disregarding his instructions to not inflate their life jackets and more of them not hearing him correctly. Through all the screaming and sheer panic they probably heard either inflate your life jackets or didn’t hear him at all and just followed what others were doing.
It's fairly common in a ditching situation for some people to panic and think it's safer to have an inflated life jacket ready to go when you hit the water and thus disregard the instructions, so some people definitely heard and disregarded. It's not to blame them, they just didn't know and were panicking
They likely would have been instructed on the proper procedures for using the life jackets when the plane first took off, but panic can really cloud your mind and make you forget what you were told to do in that situation. I mean the one guy was literally telling the other people not to inflate their life jackets but a lot of them did anyway. I doubt it was a case of mishearing him, and more just people reacting to what feels instinctive, which is water = lifejacket, while not thinking straight due to fear.

smart
Nice to see my fellow scuba divers helping out the survivors.
I pray to God to give you a lot of beautiful days and you know God loves us so much,So where are you originally from? I am David originally from Spain but currently living in Texas now.
Congratulations to the pilot and co-pilot! Also to the brave passengers. Sorry for those who needlessly lost their lives because of the foolish and selfish hijackers
And still, it took until the 9/11 terrorist attack for the FAA to finally have kevlar cockpit doors that couldn't be opened by passengers. This captain was already dealing with his third hijacking, and hijackings had been happening all over the world where the terrorists had access to the cockpit. And nothing was done to curtail this. Sad.
After 2 he should lock the door.
This historic film kept coming my way and each moment avoided it for very obvious reasons but changed my mind and watched the difficult and extraordinary situation. RIP to all those we lost and fervent prayers never to witness similar incident in our future.
God's blessings to the brave pilot and co pilot.I am surprised people did not try to over power the hijackers. For 3 hrs death was steering them and they did nothing.😢😢😢
@kathleenreefer225 I was quite surprised. May their souls find rest
Peace be with you 💚

I just can't believe how nobody decided to fight the highjackers.
Nothing is inevitable.. no one s immune 2 anything!!!
Salute to the incredible courage of Captain Abate..
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
This pilot is amazing.

Nothing scarier then people who are so empty that they have nothing to loose. People should remember this when they interfere with survival of the fittest. I’m surprised these geniuses could even read the in flight magazine.
That's what religión does. It doesn't matter what religión you practice is the same purpose "brain washing."" Remember that religión and politics were created to control the masses.
What is "survival of the fittest"?
What a great pilot: Captain Abate. What a hero for sure! Pilots are so cool under constant pressure.
Sad knowing we watched those people last moments, knowing they were inside from the beach’s view camera.
Just to see some survivors in this documentary is refreshing.😇
Yes please, that ' there were no survivors ' always cuts deep 😭
Despite the darkness of this event, I'm weirdly satisfied that the nurse on the plane is just prepping to survive in the ocean with snacks. Very practical folks on this flight
Who else agrees that captain abate was the best pilot ever , all the love goes to you men
Captain Abate, you are a real hero and an inspiration to all.
Finding an episode of Mayday I haven't seen yet is like opening a Christmas present.
These wrecks are NOT for your personal enjoyment. 😒 They are meant to help pray for the lost souls on board. Thanks. And may God bless you.
@@quantumpotential7639 I find the topic fascinating and respect the investigators who piece it all together. I'll try to cry the whole time I watch another episode just for you. Did you know the movie Titanic was a massive box office success? How awful, right? When people die in a disaster, we should pretend it didn't happen I guess.
hijackers doesn't even know airplanes always carry calculated fuel quantity.....
Captain Abarte is one amazing pilot.
😊❤😂🎉
I am happy that the pilot and the co-pilot were not dissuaded from the enjoyment they get flying.
Those pilots are heroes!!! 🙏
Indeed my husband is a pilot
Amazing work by captain.. Hats off
Now i know why we do not inflate our life jacket so early on board! Very educational!
This captain is a LEGEND
What a gripping documentary. I remember this but the details are new to me. Thanks for presenting this. Tragic...
RIP to all who died.
What an amazing pilot.
Wonderful video and extremelly well narrated. I supose all people in the video were actors and if so they portraied their parts beautifully and very convincing. Unecessary to say that that pilot was a true hero and rightefully so. Thank you for the great video.
I pray to God to give you a lot of beautiful days and you know God loves us so much,So where are you originally from? I am David originally from Spain but currently living in Texas now.
This pilot is a hero
Ethiopian airlines had the BEST food served when I flew in 2017. Restaurant quality.
The pilot is a hero😥. Surviving more than one hijacking.
A. Awesome captain! Well done! I was a 767 captain for United for 14 years so I know this pilot was doing ever he could do.
What did the hijackers think would happen even if they did get to Australia? That they'd just be welcomed and waved through customs to be refugees?!
Captain Abate is an incredible pilot
In those days, most hijackings involved landing an airport and making demands.
Are you implying they wouldn't be? "Doctors and engineers", remember?
I remember this accident.i think it was 1996. The captain did very well, under the terrible circumstances.
The bravery of the pilots!...God bless them!
I pray to God to give you a lot of beautiful days and you know God loves us so much,So where are you originally from? I am David originally from Spain but currently living in Texas now.
I'm trying to be serious but the captain is killin me with that side-eye 🤣
😂
Captain Leul Abate has my biggest respects. He did his best.
Hope pilot live 100 years ❤❤He is incredible
Obviously math was not their best subject. You got 3 hrs fuel but want to travel 10 hrs. Then you just start pressing buttons when you saw the plane crashing. I can't! Kudos to the pilots. RIP to those who lost their lives.
My heart goes out to the pilot, passengers & crew. Thank God for the pilot who saved 50 plus himself. Praise God, security measures are taken to secure cockpits🙏.
This story lives in my head rent free as a reminder not to inflate my lifejacket god forbid if I ever get into a situation like this.
They were so lucky they 1. Had an amazing captain to land the plane, and they were so close to inhabited islands.
I pray to God to give you a lot of beautiful days and you know God loves us so much,So where are you originally from? I am David originally from Spain but currently living in Texas now.
I'd seen this footage before but never knew the circumstances of the crash. Such a tragedy that so many drowned by not taking the captain's instructions seriously. It certainly takes a strong person to go through that ordeal, and then continue flying after that.
Incredible how 50 people Survived
..........Absolutely, but for the hijackers, they piloted.........their soul of doom into oblivion of 'NO' Return.
