Because the insurgents were showing off for the Paris-Match reporters (there were either one or two of them depending on whose account you believe) that accompanied them that day, and weren't too picky about what sort of aircraft they shot down?

Well, it is DHL. So maybe he parked his plane in a cyclist lane while making a delivery. At least, that's what their drivers do around here.
And maybe the guy who shot it was an upset father who's kid was just coming home from school.
Bit extreme for us. We prefer to just embarrass the driver, or contact the company if it's really bad. But than maybe Iraqis have other ideas about extreme.

I wish the narrator hadn't said "Where the Japanese pilots had *failed* in it", though. They didn't 'fail'. The terrain they were over was mountains, not a desert. I think the word 'unlucky' is better suited than 'failed'. Those pilots tried their hearts out to the very end. Pretty sure if Baghdad was full of mountains around the airport, we'd be hearing a different end to this.. (I'm glad they made it though).

PCA sounds super neat. I didn't know about it before this video.
There is a decades upon decades older feature called balance tabs/bays. The control column only moves a tiny tab on the surface, which creates a differential pressure in bays forward of the surface itself. This makes the controls quite easy to move without hydraulics, although obviously not as easy as hydraulic boosting. The Boeing 707 and its military variants have these tabs. I think some 737s have the same feature.
Crazy how we use technology (fly by wire, hydraulic boosting, etc) to create weaknesses in airplanes that we solved in the gestational stage of large passenger/cargo jets, and then we are struggling finding a further technological solution to a problem the technology created.
I love the fancy stuff, but when it creates problems that the old airplanes didn't have, we are doing it wrong.

I can think of a very simple way to create an additional system to use in an emergency like this one which would do the same job as the hydraulics.
The design of the plane would be different though. But, that alteration would actually make it easier to fly.
People gets used to "the statu quo" and that includes engineers, even at top notch establishments, obviously.
In Bs As - Argentina, you put your vehicle at (I think is 45) miles/h, in an Av. and you can cross the city not having to stop once for a red light.
A city of 20 million people.
Because the lights are programmed to keep you at that speed. As you advance, you'll see you hit only green lights, constantly.
I saw this in the early 80s in Argentina.
TODAY, 40 YEARS LATER, in 2023, it'll take you forever to cross the island of Manhattan, because the streets lights there are a complete chaos.
Supposedly the "first city of the world"

I understand the added "protection" the new sofware might give. However, these men did it on pure grit, using what knowledge they had of how a plane works and adapting to the emergency. We put too much emphasis and trust into computers. Computers fail.
Pilots who are trained to rely almost soley on their computers especially the advanced auto pilot, are losing touch with the human element of knowing how to fly. This proves disastrous when technology fails.

    • @amkb4649
      @amkb4649 Год назад

Totally true! Many averted plane crashes had pilots with previous military flying experience which focused more training on creative problem solving and in-depth knowledge of plane behaviors in adverse conditions. Typical airline pilot training doesn't incorporate that unfortunately.
