- The Amrep Octo is the iconic SoCal garbage truck. GB Services has a handful of these, each one in pristine condition, looking just like it did when it first came off the assembly line in 1984. This one is collecting in the industrial areas around Downtown Los Angeles.
The Octo is a revolutionary design with its cross mounted packing cylinders, half-height packer blade with follower, and of course octogonal body cross section. The body is light weight, gives the driver much better visibility behind the truck, and keeps any trash from getting behind the packer blade and onto the cylinders. This particular truck also has underbody arm cylinders which were later phased out in favor of the more conventional arm-pull cylinders, and fully manual cable controls, which while still ordered on some bodies, have been replaced with air controls for most body functions. The Octo is a personal favorite, so it was incredible to see where it all started on this very early model example.

I drove one for waste management for years. I liked being by myself. Getting off at a decent time was not allowed back then; you get done in 8 hours, the next day more yardage was added to your route. The only placed I ever worked for that punished you for doing a good job.
You can tell right away when a good experienced driver is in charge, reminds me of my younger days with old school companies like BFI, WWI, WM. Good memories.😢

Nothing unusual, just climbed on top with the tripod. Of course it helped that the driver was so cool, he even waited when we got caught behind at a light while following him between stops. And thanks!

Definitely one of my favorite front loaders I've watched in a long time. Excellent packer design, I'm sure the operator likes not having to worry about compacting the container or the container getting in the way with the blade like design rather than a huge blade that pushes out much like McNeilus' for example, for situations like at 7:56, where the damn thing was full lol. Enjoyed the manual packing, especially when the truck sounds as awesome as this one did. Fave George! Hell of a job man!!

I'm surprised that this truck is very clean! The lime like color looks great on this truck.
Also one of my favorites. The half blade works great but it isn't without drawbacks. Apparently heavy trash like sections of steel can get caught in the gap between the follower and bulkhead and tear up the rubber seal, or even get under the cabshield. Also if you dump on the follower (haha) it can get damaged and cause more trash to come out from under the cabshield. I dig the lack of autopack too, everything is run on the cable levers which I think is cool as hell.

I can't remember if it was Zack or Bill who posted a video a while ago, but I remember seeing you positioned on top of the truck, so knew this was a must watch video. Wasn't disappointed either, because there was also that second hopper view at the end!!! Awesome seeing a container get dumped from up the top so you can watch everything pour out, let alone see the packer do it's thing straight after. Cool to watch a half blade with follower for a change - clear to see why rubbish getting behind the blade is a very minor issue. Nice job Zack at 1:13 - drivers must love having a few guys to do their dirty work =] This really is a nice truck, great to see GB has kept them in great condition and no doubt takes pride in their fleet and respects their equipment. Really like the sound I was hearing too, more so when he really revved her up during packing. To think a truck this old is still going hard!

GB is probably my favorite small company out there. I love how their trucks look + the paint always looks extremely sharp! I've actually never seen them in real life - should take a trip to LA soon to see them haha awesome vid!

What is GB up to now? I see your roll offs on the 5 occasionally but when I went by the old yard on Vail it was full of new Pete tractors

That's how a FL packer should be, like that of an ASL. Any other FL you have the shitty pusher blade, which of course, allows stuff to fall behind it. How did you get the hopper shots? Those were pretty awesome. As soon as the next clip started, my reaction was "what thuuuuu......." when the forks slid into typical "SoCal" FL style haha. Overall a great video, definitely a like and a fav! Great job!

A plenty awesome video...my apologies for not watching it sooner. Smooth operation and pack cycles were great, I also have a thing for seeing those old cable controls as they're becoming obsolete fast. Doesn't help that a few haulers have even converted trucks that once were cable to air-over-hydraulic or whatever the alternative is called.
