  • Trees can look very cluttered with hundreds of little branches going every direction. Designing trees into shapes helps to simplify your paintings and give you a better composition.

Phil, This really helps me think about ways to simplify trees and other complex scenes. I appreciate that your videos focus on design concepts and the thinking that goes into how to achieve it. I’ve also enjoyed the videos showing other artist’s paintings and your comments on what makes them work. Thank you and I look forward to more!

TREES ARE SO HARD!!! Thanks for a great lesson, and an approach and strategy for tackling them.

This is such a great demonstration! This would’ve been an example of something I thought of as an impossible photo. So obvious as soon as you start laying it out.
I consume a lot of these painting instructors on RUclips and elsewhere and Phil, you’re really killing it! You’re really offering something that no one else is at a quality level that isn’t matched.
    Thank you!

This is a great video! The way you've outlined the positive shape against the negative is so helpful. Your use of Photoshop to outline shows clearly how to simplify the trees and aid the composition. I also think your outlining really shows how you can identify a tree shape that in itself is interesting (rather than being a lollipop or other boring shape!).

Making it make sense. Thank you so much for this great content. I've been trying to self teach myself through books with very little success. Your videos are a game changer.
