  • There are 3 main things to think about when painting rocks: simplifying, making them look heavy and solid, and suggesting the light that hits them.

I have a couple of $100+ DVDs that don't get down to the nitty gritty like Phil does. Thank you for such in depth videos.

Thanks for explaining this. I just took a walk around some rocky creek beds looking for a spot to paint. I think I needed to see how to simplify the busy scene.

Rocks in a creek definitely need to be simplified. Good luck.

To understand better is better if you can paint them ..we can see more details and which color to use.

This is great Phil. 3 values seems to be the key to most things in painting. Just forcing things into these 3 values keeps things simple but most importantly they look painterly. But you use the same approach on painting drapery / curtains in windows? Thanks Phil😀

Hi Mike, yes I would block everything in with three values first then decide if they need more detail (values). The fewer values the better. I can always use more color variation to create interest.

Thanks. Do you have a painting of rocks that show this?

Hi Gary, there might be a painting or two on my website that has some rocks in them but I really don’t have anything right now that shows a lot of rocks. But check out my website at philstarke.com.
