    Thanks for sharing your insights. Great advice. I never seem to have enough contrast in my paintings. This technique looks like it will be very helpful. Thanks!

    Great one Phil, as always! Nothing like strong value contrast to draw you from one side of a big art gallery to the other to look at "that painting"! : )

    I've only had one printmaking class however, I that the Frank Brangwin print looks like it could be a monotype print.

      You could be right Turtle, now that you mention it there is some similarities to monotype. He did do a lot of different types of print making. He was quite an artist

    What about simplifying dark areas into large, flat, and simple shapes and not putting any details into them whatsoever?

    • @philstarkestudio
      @philstarkestudio 5 лет назад +2

      Robert That’s a good goal for the block in or filling in the large shapes. Leaving them totally flat will flatten the painting, causing it to loose atmosphere. Although I keep them flatter than the real scene, it doesn’t take much to create a little atmosphere.

    Great. Thanks gir this. How to handle dappled shadows? Mostly in nature

    • @philstarkestudio
      @philstarkestudio 5 лет назад +1

      Sameeha Khaliq Glad the video was helpful, the key to dappled light is to simplify it, not as busy as the real thing.

    Is shadow pattern same as a notan?

    • @philstarke.artist
      @philstarke.artist  Год назад

      Yes, designing the shadow pattern to make a better composition and simplify the painting. They're basically the same thing.
