    I still can't believe they took this down. Great American Scream Machine was a sentimental favorite of mine. I remember seeing it as we entered the parking lot the first time I went to Great Adventure and thinking how big and awesome it looked (it was my first time ever seeing a looping coaster). I'm kinda glad I settled for this instead of waiting three hours to ride Kingda Ka the last time I went back in 2006. Man, I bet Great Adventure just doesn't look the same without this beast there anymore. :'(

    • @oneandonlysound3453
      @oneandonlysound3453 7 лет назад +2

      It looks like a messy zone of DC advertisements with Ultimate Flight in the parking lot and Green Lantern the stand up. At least put six down seats on it. The whole mid-section is basically garbage now. it used to have a few good rides (besides the upcharge ones), games to play that didn't cost an arm and a leg, and Great American Scream Machine. Now it's filled with mediocre coasters and ones that is always broken on the path off the side to the "kingdom" section where you have to walk another mile just to get to the drop tower. The place is a mess. They should do a solid premiere launch at some point, and a GCI to replace rolling thunder. a zamperla endeavour would be a good ride too since these areas all lack rides really. Hopefully one in 2020. But seriously, they could tear down green lantern and superman and get a wing coaster and I'd care less for the loss.

    • @oneandonlysound3453
      @oneandonlysound3453 6 лет назад +1

      Kingda Ka is constantly broken, and it's overrated, you launch, come down the ride is over. El Toro used to be amazing, it's just getting more and more rough, obvious rusted track in need of retracking. Nitro is pretty great, as is batman the ride, joker, bizzaro, even the family coaster runaway train is fun as is skull mountain, dark night is garbage-I like wild mouse coasters, it's not a good one. Huge park one wooden coaster, c'mon. Build a solid GCI. Things were much better when we had rolling thunder and great american scream machine, not a super loop and a stand up coaster.

      In 1999 when they built Medusa (now Bizzaro), it overtook Scream Machine as my favorite looping coaster in the park. Of course then we had chiller to be a fun launcher. That did more than go over a single top hat. If it was still there even now, even loving batman, and enjoying others like joker and looking foward to the upcoming jersey devil, it'd probably still be in my top 5. Unless they'd actually fix El Toro with all the rusted out track and super jerky-ness added on with crappy trains.

    It is interesting how Six Flags Great America got version 1.0 of the Arrow 7-looper Shockwave in 1988 due to low attendance at Great Adventure. One year later, Great American Scream Machine (AKA Shockwave 1.1 to me) successfully revived Great Adventure.
    I wonder if this is where Six Flags Great America got its reputation for being a first mover in the coaster wars... (e.g. Batman: the Ride being cloned, Raging Bull evolving into Nitro)

As the years went by I got older, married and I finally DID get that ride on GASM, but by then it was already very rough. Even though the ride is gone, I still have that newspaper article in my old bedroom at my parent's house.

    When I was a kid I rode this at least 15 times in a row. It was a low traffic day and no one was on line so i could just keep getting back on. Was my favorite ride next to Rolling Thunder, and they're both gone now rip.

    i remember riding this when i was 9 years old, it was on a school day so barely anyone was there that day, and i got on and off and on and off this ride about 10-15 times, a few times i was the only rider, and still today even thought its gone, it remains one of my favorite rides ever!!

    Would prefer this over the Green Lantern. Not implying that Green Lantern is bad, just hurt my chops and not my taste of tea. It is a cool design of a ride though. Ended up finding out that The way I was standing or w.e. kinda messed the ride up for me. Cool ride but this is just a beast!

    This ride was so much better than Green Lantern. The proper course of action would've been to put Lantern where the chiller used to be, and keep the epic, eye candy of the entrance Great American Scream Machine. Now it just looks messy from the outside. And now we lost Rolling Thunder too? There should be a compact solid GCI to replace the latter and S&S should get to work past there kennywood success and six flags should get a custom looper of epic proportions and remove lantern-send it somewhere that needs it and make it floorless there.

    • @matt13ms
      @matt13ms 10 лет назад +1

      I agree with you but rolling thjnder should have went and it's also sad to see the abandoned part of the park where the chiller used to be I also think it's rediculous that the chiller is gone for a stupid wild mouse which should get replaced for a real coaster

    • @thecoolness317
      @thecoolness317 10 лет назад +1

      matt13ms chiller had so many problems it was drowning six flag's wallet to keep up with the thing it wasn't them saying that we need a wild mouse and to get rid of a good ride

    • @oneandonlysound3453
      @oneandonlysound3453 10 лет назад +1

      True about the problems with Chiller but a terrible wild mouse ride (by terrible I mean it's just a poorly designed boring design, wild mouse rides are generally fun, the one in Atlantic City that spins is freakin awesome, or the ones that used to be in Seaside, even the one in Wildwood) was a stupid replacement. A new launch coaster would make a proper replacement and GCI would be perfect for a rolling thunder replacement.

    East and West coast sisters that briefly held the height record, and introduced coaster fans to maneuvers they had not experienced previously in America. Today, those loops would be much larger, with smoother variable radius transitions between loops and other elements. But in their day, Scream Machine and Viper were revolutionary!

    Though the ride may have been dated by today's standards, it will always hold a place in my heart as this was my first roller coaster that I ever rode on. People always forgot about this coaster. There was hardly ever a line and you could ride it pretty much non stop if you wanted too on the right day. Probably why they took it down to bring in some new blood.

    @TheJedigir the reason why rides like GASM and Magnum XL-200 were rough was because the technology used at those times were not advanced. There was no computer that made these large rides, thus causing the coaster to be very rough. You can make the thing all over again from scratch because you need to replace every part, so it was more cost effective to simply take out the ride since it was popular (simply because it was too rough).

    Dad is one scary ass first person ride on that roller coaster because I was never at Six Flags great adventure when the roller coaster had first launched back in 1989 and I can’t believe someone was prayed enough to ride the front seat of this rollercoaster and see this thing going through all of these loops and everything but I heard back in 2010 that roller coaster had been demolished and I believe many of the parts may have been sold for scrap or they may have sold the parts to another theme park and renamed it.

    Back in the mid 1990's, while on vacation in NYC, I went on a bus trip to Great Adventure, and went on this truly amazing coaster.... The first time I ever went on an inverted coaster, despite living at the time 45 minutes away from Canada's Wonderland. I wanted to get back to Great Adventure, to ride it one more time..... RIP Great American Scream Machine, you will be missed.... On an aside, I have seen rumors that another Arrow coaster, Dragon Fire @ Canada's Wonderland, may be next......

    Real steel coasters are the best, if they will just do a little reprofiling and put the new vekoma vest restraint trains on them. For all the rough boomerangs, Sidewinder at Hershey is made enjoyable, and what SF Over Georgia did to "Ninja" is "Blue Hawk" is basically something that could be done to any arrow or vekoma looper. Also, if your going to choose to replace something like this, they could've gotten something more original for the park, not another B&M, and a horrid stand up coaster that is just as headbanging and breaks your thighs. time to replace the replacement, sent green lantern to SF America in Maryland and make it floorless there. We don't need it here, it adds nothing to the lineup at all.

  • @jetman0506

    @TheJedigir the reason why they tore this down is because it land area was big enough for gl and they count every rider that goes on the ride each day and it just happens to have a low rpd average compared to others. So the rough discourages others to go on so that helps it torn down. they in fact were planning to take it down for eltoro but found the spot it is today.

    What's funny is that Great American Scream Machine's brother coaster Shockwave at Six Flags Great America was torn down to make room for Superman: Ultimate Flight so it's kind of funny seeing Superman: Ultimate Flight right next to Great American Scream Machine because it's like seeing Shockwave and Superman together.
