He is singing "they just don't WRITE 'em like that anymore". LOL
I just love you guys! They're saying "They don't write 'em like that anymore".
I love this song! It’s a classic! I also love their mega-hit, Jeopardy!❤❤
is that the same song that Weird Al did a parody of?
@@howiedavis2316 yes!! A very funny parody!
I remember when this first hit the radio, it was huge. And I heard it ALL THE TIME. Yet, I never knew the name of the damn song for nearly 20 years, lol!
😅
Me either, nor the artist.
Brad & Lex, you’ll love his song "Jeopardy"!! It reached #2 on the charts, very catchy!
Oh ya Great song
Theres a great Weird Al parody of Jeopardy too. Greg Kihn cameos at the end of the video too!
Dude. He sings Jeopardy too?
Im that broad that knows many songs but not who sings them. Try being a punk rock chick with that character defect 🤣🤣
@@MrZics “I lost on Jeopardy”
@@tracybush1970 not a defect at all :) . He only had a couple of hits, and he's not a household name.
Greg Kihn was a disc jockey in San Jose for many years. Always told the best stories about rock bands.
👍❤🤙
I got to meet him on a radio show with Eddie Trunk years ago when I was just starting out in Psycho Social. Genuinely a nice guy!
KFOX 98.5
His morning show on the way to middle school/high school was basically my first exposure to Rock and Roll.
I remember the first time I heard "Pink Floyd's Time" on his show and I was dumbfounded. I turned to my dad and asked "So... You're allowed to make music like that!?" (Most of the music around me was rap at that time)
Saw Greg many times (Bay Area before he hit it big Does a great version of Springsteen's "For You" Greg is one
of the best screamers - check out "Can't Stop Hurting Myself" and "Secret Meetings.
He was also a popular DJ on one of the local classic rock radio stations.
Y'all gonna make me break my records out.
Answer your beeper dangit!! :P
Albums
You better you better you bet
@@brianherrala8238 records or albums
Records, singles, albums, LP's 33's, 45's, 78's...whatever you want to call them...
my grandkids said "those are some huge CDs"😂
Lexi is wearing a Thin Lizzy shirt? I KNEW there was a reason why I loved her!
Fun times...Grad night 1983, Disneyland CA. Greg Kihn Band, Berlin, Dazz Band, Steel Breeze, Papa Doo Run Run, and more!
I would have loved to see that lineup.
Lex's hot rod talk made me think of the song, "Driver's Seat" by Sniff 'n' The Tears. It also has a distinctive beat. You should react to that song if you haven't already.
I love that song.....
I saw Sniff & The Tears in concert way , way , back in the day. They opened for Kansas. That's the only reason I saw them.
Agree, have suggested it myself a few times, still waiting. I am sure somebody said it, its not "they don't ride" its" they don't write" unless I'm totally wrong, which I am often.
@@clok1966 You are correct.
Seen sniff and the tears with Kansas at the El Paso County coliseum.
Kansas was awesome,s a t t only had one good song.
the specificity and ACCURACY of saying you'd hear this in a mechanic's shop, lol
The Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah oh lines were originally supposed to be placeholders for lyrics he was going to write later, but the producer liked the version he demoed to him so much that they decided to leave the placeholder lyrics in.
Wife here...,THE BEAT of THIS SONG is BOSS...!! WILL ALWAYS CRANK THIS UP!!
Love this ! .. Bought the single the very first time I heard it, and still have it .. Great vocal and guitar riffs ..So damn catchy !
But If I can suggest I always saw it as one of the best and lively versions of what happened to Bille Holiday, the Kinks, Buddy Holly, etc. I could go on and on . Rock doesn’t sound like rock anymore. They’re okay but personally I enjoyed when they did all I can think of right now is Run DMC/ Aroesmith
That’s giving the beat some respect
@@tbarrett4732 Yep, pure traditional R&R had it's era, and I doubt whether we'll ever see the like of it again in any major way .. Luckily, we'll always have the recordings of all that great music.
@@tbarrett4732 AEROSMITH!
I think it is "They don't write em, like that anymore" refering to the music in the bar where he is drinking, watching the others dance, missing his girl after a break up.
Brings me back to high school! Loved this song, and still do!
Yes same here High School memories, miss those days now more than ever before 🤔
Junior in high school.
I am a mechanic and definitely rock this song at the shop.......Well played Lex.
Back in the days when many of us were kids, used to think this was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Lol.
Has a Blue Oyster Cult feeling, too.
Lex with the Thin Lizzy T-shirt!
You gonna mention The Heartbreakers when talking about the Greg Kihn Band without bring up the drummers were brothers? (Stan Lynch & Larry Lynch)
@@kartaan Ah ha! True! lol
Makes sense.
Rock Kihn Roll. Loved this album...Can't Stop Hurtin Myself, Girl Most Likely, Sheila (cover), etc..
Check out "JEOPARDY" by this band - the track (and video of it...) filled every dancefloor around the globe!
Ahhh I haven't HEARD this in FOREVER!!! I USED to have the 45 rpm record, but it has gone missing some time ago. It was a song I LIKED a LOT!!!
I must say....
Lex you look so good and glowing. Your always so positive and Brad your a lucky guy. You guys are so awesome with reactions.
You're the best! Thank you Donna!
One of my all time favorite songs. This one gets better every time you listen to it.
Now watch Jeopardy, and then weird Al's version "I lost on Jeopardy"
The radio edit was a rare wise choice. This album cut tends to drone on. I do remember I was learning the guitar when this was big, and during that chorus, when the chords change from D Minor to F Major, it opened doors. The chords sound the same! But different! Little moments like that help one understand music
Is this an album cut, or did the creator of the source video just repeat the song?
@@centuryrox Oh, didn't think of that, but I don't think so, because the galloping snare at the end was only at the end. It would be weird to splice in 6/7 of the song and not the whole song.
@@centuryrox I have the original recording and you are right this was edited good memory! 👍
Agreed. The album rock station in my city (now classic rock) always played the radio edit instead of the album version, which was the reverse of what they usually did with other tunes.
D-minor is the relative minor of F-major.The scale for each of them have the exact same notes (F, G, A, B-flat, C, D, E), but the notes for the two chords only use three notes from that scale, so they sound related but different.
D-minor uses D, F, and A.
F-major uses F, A, and C
"Jeopardy" is his biggest hit, but I also like "I Got Lucky". Both very catchy.
The "uh-uh-uh, uh-uh-uh-uh-uh" part is what caught my ear when I first heard this song too, which is yet another case of a not-Top 10 hit from the 1980s becoming a classic with time. "The Breakup Song (They Don't Write 'Em)" peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 5, 1981.
The Greg Kihn Band did have one mega-hit, but it was denied #1 by another mega-hit. "Jeopardy" peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 7, 1983. Keeping it out of #1 was "Beat It" by Michael Jackson, which spent three weeks at #1, beginning April 30, 1983. I highly recommend "Jeopardy" for a listen.
Listened to this soooo many times back in '81 or '82. By '86 we could play it; our first "modern" cover and it was already half-a-decade old.
I get a Blue Oyster Cult vibe when I hear this song.
My cousin toured with him as his drummer for a few years, I love this song
Greg also had some unique variations of his last name (Kihn) for album titles.
They don’t WRITE them like that anymore “break up songs” 😂😂😂
Wow I haven’t heard this song in forty years. They don’t write em like that anymore. Thanks.
Song gets better each time you listen to it! 🤣
That was one of the coolest songs ever. ❤️❤️
Made my break-ups in the 80's a lot better..every mechanic shop should play this song
Love the Thin Lizzy tee shirt. You should do reactions to Emerald and China Town
And Black Rose!
Great Suggestions. I would add: Killer on the loose, Bad Reputation, Suicide, Massacre and Don,t believe a word. And lots more.
Love this song so much.
Jeopardy has the dopest groove to date.
Great song and a big hit for them, try Jeopardy as well, another hit from the 80s. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Weird Al did a popular cover of his song called, (Our Love's in) Jeopardy. It's called (I lost on) Jeopardy.
Nope, they don't write 'em like that anymore for sure, love the live version as well, thanks for the rewind to an awesome song from our awesome youth
Lex, it's not about cars. He sings "They don't Write 'em like that anymore." (Thank you Judy Lee for being the only other commenter who noticed the mis-heard lyrics.)
I was about to say, the guy just dumped his girl for good. He’s staring at a dance floor full of new prospects and that song comes on that speaks to him and he says, “They just don’t write ‘em like that anymore!”
One of my all-time favorite guitar riffs.
I have always loved this song. Thank you
This was a catchy song back in the day that's for sure. Now I'm feeling even older than I am. Thnx you two 🤣🤣😂😂😭😭🤣🤣 lol
I know what you mean ,Mike .Maybe it's just me, but hearing it right now makes me feel that this song hasn't aged that well. It was cool when we were younger but a little monotonous and predictably repetitive .
@@markdraine3571 hell I've probably not heard that song in at least 30 yrs my early 20's but soon as it started all those memories & wishes that I could go back to that time just crept up on me & when it started it's like BAM 5 across the eye 👁️ I still like it & I've been a hard rock/heavy metal guy for 42-43 yrs
@@miketheheartbreakkidvitale1783Gotcha .Me, too .I didn't mean to be harsh about the Greg Kihn song..I like it still ..Maybe we heard it so much back in the day,. I didn't feel quite the same punch like you do
@@markdraine3571 It's funny you say that, because I was just thinking that the guitar parts are better than I remember. lol
@@miketheheartbreakkidvitale1783 you haven't heard this song in 30 years?
Wow... there's 4 radio stations in my area of Kansas, that still plays this song at least once a week.😁
Loved this back in the day and still
do. 🙂👍
He was right "they just don't write them like that anymore"
This is such a sing along song and now that I have added to my practice songs on the drums, now start to sing the lyrics out while keeping the constant drum beat which is straight forward but it's going take some time to focus on both at the same time without slowing down time when singing its tought but will work it out.
Always thought this song had a sort of Blue Oyster Cult vibe.
Just not as "heavy". LOL
Now that you mention it. 👍😂
The guitar work. A little. Yeah.
Similar chord progression, and I think they're both in Am...
@@mikelundquist4596 - "Don't fear the reaper. Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah."
Playing GTA5 and having Los Santos Rock Radio on with this music was amazing. Still gives me goosebumps.
lol, Lex is awesome. No doubt an absolute ton of hot rods have been worked on with this song playing!
Lex"s enthusiasm for that hot rod shop makes me want one too!
My wife and I saw them in Houston in the 80s. It was a radio event and they were the primary band there. I do recall having a great time.
Love the Thin Lizzy shirt. Check out their tune “Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed”
These guys opened for either Queen in 1980, Journey in 1983 or Billy Squier in 1982 when I saw them.
40 years is a long time ago.
Me
I bet it was for Journey
Now that I think about it, it was for them and Billy Squier opened for them in 1982. Brian Adams opened for Journey in 1984.
@@vernhoke7730 Yeah I just looked it up, they toured with Journey on Escape in 1982
One of my all time favorites. My grade school teacher in Soc Studies used to play this on his guitar!
Catchy. Awesome old 80s classic. I miss the music and the spirit of the 80s.
Love this song !!
seen greg kihn over 25 times he is great in concert,
New Wave. A deep cut, and really happy to watch you react to this awesome band.
Sounds like Lex just came up with a good idea for a car commercial. Lol 👍🏼
This song takes me right back to my freshman year of high school. It made my 30 minute bus ride bearable.
A hot rod shop tune heck yeah ,, always the coolest wished for Brad & Lex
Memories…Grad Nite 1983…these guys were playing…. I can’t believe it’s been this long ago
The best part of the song is the ah ah ah ah ah. If you sang that on the way to your High School locker, in between your classes, your friends knew it was this song.
I saw Gerg at the Agora in Dallas in the 80s. Great show. He's also a great songwriter.
Song Is Catchy. It Caught Me back Then and I'm still hooked 😊
Greg Kihn Band another under Appreciated Band that didn't get the credit they deserved, Great Songs!
long cool woman (in a black dress) by the Hollies is a vibe for the road or the beach- imo
Don't know who's album cover that is, but the song is GREAT!
Great band I seen them open for tom petty one night best concert ever
Here's where I date myself. My uncle had a collection of 45s that I used to listen to when I visited. This song and I Wanna Hold Your Hand by The Beatles were the two I played the most. But The Breakup Song was by far my favorite. I was too young to understand the subject by didn't care because it had such a fun energetic sound.
"They don't WRITE 'em like that anymore..." ...Songs! It's called, "The Breakup song" ...doesn't matter. You two are awesomd. More Alice Cooper!
I agree with Lex about the mechanic working on a car thing while playing this song! It all sounds good until I miss the nut, skin my knuckles throw the wrench and walk away shouting ''I would pay attention to what I was doing if that song wasn't so dang catchy'' Lol
one of my favorite songs of all time
I remembered being on their Discord a long time ago and someone suggesting this song and I waited the whole night to see if they would play it. Now it's nearly a year, maybe longer, and it's finally here.I never heard the extended version before. I'm not too into it but it's new. I was just waiting for the finale but then the song just looped. Weird.
The Greg Kihn Band - "Jeopardy" is an awesome song !
Love this song :)
Damn, this song was on ALL the time in 83. It's probably one of the most "lost" songs in that respect. That and "Owner Of A Loney Heart" by Yes. Two songs that were on all the time in the day and you don't hear em even on classic rock stations.
Lex rockin the Thin Lizzy t-shirt!!! I love that... These reaction videos from people exposing themselves to music they wouldn't normally gravitate towards and end up being fans of some stuff I think is one of the more positive things to ever happen with this digital age of instant information some good some bad. This age has changed society so much in the past 20 years and not for the better but here's an example that has been for the better and I think it's one of the coolest things on RUclips and I love checking out reactions to music I dig and music I grew up exposed to.
Really surprised you discovered Greg Kihn. I was a fan. Saw him twice in small clubs. He never made it big enough to play the arenas. Had some good songs. Remember, China Town, Fallen Idol, Happy Man.
I saw him play in a 12,000 seat area as a co headliner with Jefferson Starship in 1981!
The Song on the Jukebox, They don't Write them like that anymore.....to listen to and dance to
Also Check out - Sniff and the Tears - Drivers Seat
Gets your feet tapping...good song!
Lex that was a good analogy of this song about working in a mechanic shop playing this music I thought that was pretty cool
Rockin the Thin Lizzy shirt Lex... great band!
Song is on fire, played many many times in my harley shop
"Driver Seat" by Sniff and the Tears is to me similar to this but imo much better.
I saw an interview with him where he said this one song put his kids through college.
Great reaction, had this LP and loved it. I think he has a Steve Miller vibe in a good way. Jeopardy is a good follow-up.
Lex commenting about being an auto mechanic is unbelievably cute. She just lets herself have fun and go with the flow.
So great.. loved growing up in the 80’s😎
Speaking of one hit wonders, you guys should check out On The Dark Side. It’s from the 1983 movie Eddie and the Cruisers. They were a band in the movie and “sang” the song, but not really. The real band was John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band.
Edit: ok, never mind. I see you’ve already done that one 🧐 I’m about to go watch your reaction to it 👀
Great song
1. I was 12 or 13 when this song came out.
2. Obviously I still love it.
3..whoever this girl in this video is is completely smokimg hot.
Bravo.
Ok the song makes more sense. When you realize the word is not RIDE in the course. It's WRITE The are talking about breaking up with the times more or less. Right around this time. More of the music being written was done so with a video in mind. The concern was more about a good video then an actual good song.
It’s a very Rockabilly song. Good stuff for working on your Hot Rod in the shop. Lex has a good ear.
Remember this from my first AF base. Sitting watching the planes on the stoop of our condemned barracks.
I always liked the retro-ish sound of this one.
i have loved this song i was kid
i grew up with this song in the early 80's
