- In New York, fare evaders have cost the city hundreds of millions of dollars. Every day, people jump over or duck under the subway turnstiles to avoid paying the fare. Sometimes they slip through the open emergency exit or crowd in behind a paying customer. In 2018, the city lost $215 million to fare beaters. Inside Edition's Chief Investigative Correspondent Lisa Guerrero and her team decided to pay a visit to local subway stations to see what they could find. #InsideEdition

Honestly, this is a rational reaction to a city that refuses to maintain its subway system. Why pay for dangerous, overcrowded, late trains in a city that's already bleeding you dry for rent?
And keep in mind we already pay for the subway via our taxes

If high rent and other living costs made it a burden to pay for bus and subway transit, I'd move to a less expensive city. But New Yorkers won't make that calculation, because they feel entitled to live in the first or second most expensive city in the US.

To be honest, as someone who lives in NYC (yes I have paid for my rides in the past), they need to lower the fee because normal people use public transit to get to school/work, if you would like more people to travel via public transit, then it is a good strategy to lower the cost.
Fares could be lower if more people paid. That missing $125mil has to come out of someone's pockets, which usually means the people who actually pay the fares.
Increase income taxes on rich people and make it free at the point of service, problem solved.

It’s 4 years later and this video still makes me mad ! Not the New York people, but the woman who “catches them” not only does she probably make bank but also talks about how much money was lost from as what some people would call “The little guy” not paying the toll. It’s truly disgusting how they handled this situation, they should have NOT taken this route and instead asked people what the subway system should improve on to make people want to pay it. Yes this probably would have just had a bunch of “just lower the payment” answers, but it still would have been better then having some lady who was treating people like they just killed someone! That’s the thing though, it’s NOT supposed to be something profitable. It’s literally a subway network that exists solely for the service of people who use it daily to get from point A to point B in a huge city. At least, that’s what it should be.
