5:20 A tip I got from Mike’s, St Chas, Mo - the right size plastic dry wall inserts work great as snap caps for .22 rim fire. Safe for dry fire practice

I've owned one of these for years and bought it just before having hand surgery because I knew I wouldn't be able to handle any larger caliber during recovery. I don't recall the price being quite as high as you mentioned but times change so it is certainly possible. But the double action trigger pull is HORRENDOUS and something I don't care for at all but Single Action is very nice and helps with accuracy. On that point, this is NOT a long range gun you'd use for competition at all. Unless you want the other shooters to snicker at you. This is a gun that truly defines the concept of a "Belly Gun" and while it WILL reach out, effectivity in the cartridge is best reserved for 7 yards or less if possible. But still, even at longer ranges it'll put a hurt on a Bad Guy and (hopefully) convince them to move along and change their ways. I like that I can stick this in a front pocket and all but forget it is there if I cannot carry a larger caliber gun. And as Sootch mentioned, it is better than a sharp stick for Self Defense. Never underestimate the power of a .22 mag, rifle or pistol, it's all about shot placement. I hunt hogs with a .22 mag rifle, an 1 shot ,1 kill, but I always go for a head shot with 40 grain FMJ. An it works period.
Just bought one. Only $20 less than MSRP sadly, but for the panic-buying wave of 2020, I’m just glad I found one.. If you’re thinking about one, I’d say new, $650 is a good price in this market (Oct. 2020).
I've got the 431PD in .32 H&R Magnum. It's called an Airweight but otherwise, the same gun. They only made them for two years but they're ballistics rated like a .38 special, but with 6 rounds!
Had one. It was a lot of fun. Eventually sold it and ended up getting a 22/45 Pac Lite setup. The 351 PD was a good pocket gun in summer shorts sitting out in the yard. Very fine little snubbie. So light you can forget it's in your pocket.
I am a big fan of S&W, to include their entire production lineup. That model 351 has some nice features, and love the wood grips. Revolvers are just cool, always takes me back to my childhood. Appreciate you making this high quality video ~ as always! Have a safe and blessed weekend brother!
I love my S&W351PD. I have found it to be 100% reliable, despite the rimfire priming. The red fiber optic front sight is great; you can actually aim it. The rosewood grips did nothing for ME whatsoever. They didn’t fit my hand at all. So,I bought a DeSantis Clip Grip. You can carry IWB without a holster, but can still use an Uncle Mike’s pocket holster. 10-round speed strips are available (Tuff Products), and they work very well.
That is my dream gun. I have higher calibers but that has been my dream from childhood. .22 mag revolver. I have just never found one since I've been an adult.
I really like the scandium revolvers. I have 3 in 357 magnum. Almost bought this one too. A little expensive for me. Now if I find a used one at a good price...
🚨 NOW THAT IS THE BEST RIMFIRE HAND GUN TO HAVE FOR SELF-DEFENSE if you are going to carry a rimfire pistol, because of the power of the .22 MAGNUM caliber the lightweight and it being a revolver you can just pull the trigger again if you have a fail to fire .22 rimfire round !
I have carried a NAA Black Widow in 22 Magnum as a backup and I always liked using either the TNT or the Gold Dot short barrel rounds works well and really opens up good for such a small barrel.
Thanks so much for reviewing this I have the Smith and Wesson 351C I bought it used at a gun shop and I never see no reviews on these can’t get over how light it is good pocket gun
my favorite carry gun,so comfortable, the trigger pull gives me confidence with the rim fire cartridge. Only con my wife wants my gun over her purple ec9 Ruger , and I dont want to trade ?
Thanks for the review. Don’t see many on the 351PD. Bought one a few months ago and I really like it. Have put quite a few rounds through it with no issues. I can keep a pretty good group at 10 yards. Carry it with Hornady Critical Defense 45 gr.
Out of a 2 inch barrel, the velocity is about 1100 feet per second with a 40 grain bullet if you're lucky, making the 22 mag as powerful as 22LR fired out of a rifle barrel. The 1900 feet per second velocity is only attained where firing out of a rifle lengthened barrel.
I'm buying one on layaway as of today. Did some research first. S&W forum had a fellow - valkyriekl (I think) - who had data on different S&W models which indicated that the 351pd (personal defense) had an aluminum alloy (don't know the type) frame with a Scandium (aluminum alloy) cylinder. Bbl is, of course, stainless steel. Good info. Scandium in small amounts (under 1%) alters the nature of the aluminum alloy, making it stronger, more resilient, and more durable. Excellent metallurgy by S&W equals the entire reason for my purchase. Also, the twist rate for this firearm is 1:18 3/4. Reportedly there are fewer (if any) keyholing rounds from this short barrel compared to some. The b/c gap is minute, Lucky Gunner says the .22wmr is better than one might expect, ballistically, so I am confident that this purchase is wise and a good choice for one, who, like myself, used to enjoy .45 Colt but now has arthritis in thumb and wrist.
@Aniquin : shot placement is more important then caliber. If you look at the FBI shoot out in Florida in 1985, the agents shot the suspects many times with 38's, 9mm an 12 gauge shotgun rounds. The suspects still killed two agents with a mini 14.
Also, I experienced my pistol shooting to the right. Also, if you squeeze with your finger slightly harder with your offhand, it will keep it from shooting to the right this coming from a left-handed shooter.
@@jakedomshoots I hit a carjacker twice with a 38 with regular lead bullets. He backed off about 8 feet and he was actually thinking of coming at me again. I had 3 rounds left in my snub nose and would have finished him if he had. I was too cheap to buy hollow points. Now I carry 357 magnum with hollow points.
Over 12" of penetration that's what she said...but that is more than adequate for a self defense round...i have several 9mm for carry from a p938,p365,cz75 compact...and some full size revolvers in 537mag...but I do not have a compact revolver...I'm definatly going to have to pick one of these up,its beautiful
I was looking at that too. At 10:35 you get a good look at the barrel. It is sleeved with a modified crown which flairs out to look like a larger caliber at first glance.
@@morotetsuke i carried my primary a backup and a little north american arms 22 in my pocket. If it comes down to needing that who gives a crap if approved or not.
That trigger pull is an easy fix. The main spring on the 351 PD that I looked at had to be at LEAST a 20 pounder. I understand that it takes a stout spring to light off a rim fire but that's ridiculous. Luckily, you can get a huge range of spring weights, both main and rebound for a J Frame. It's and easy swap and just going down to a 15 lb main spring would make a world of difference. You can keep going down in weight until you start getting light strikes and then go back up a little.
The gun is Scandium, not aluminum, hence its near-$800 price tag. Addendum: There is NO ' 22LR version' of this handgun. S&W's 317 Air-Lite' is a dedicated . 22LR.
I had 2 friends who had these and both got rid of them. One went back to Smith twice.....finally both got rid of them. One borrowed my Ruger LCR and bought one. I have never had an issue with my Ruger.....wouldn’t touch this one!!!!
I have the .22lr version, it is well made. Controls are very heavy, shooting single action is unpleasant due to the small and sharp hammer profile. But, very light and easy to carry.
I had that exact model and traded it I got a little boot out of the deal I got the double action only model it’s slick for front pocket carry in a DeSantis don’t want the hammer getting caught on anything I like the dot sight on the double as well,,,also you can lock these up from shooting them too fast too often because of the material they are made out of some kind of aluminum alloy scandium or something I really like mine I only carry Hornady critical defense made for a short barrel revolver I like the spear gold dot variant of that however in my area it’s hard to find,,,another issue I have with mine is occasional keyholing that’s not uncommon for a short barrel 22 Magnum I also have a couple different North American arms mini revolver‘s that do the same thing,,, this isn’t my first choice for concealed carry however sometimes a small gun is just exactly what you need
I held one of these at my local gun store and it was so light weight I couldn’t believe it. It’s about the same weight as my iPhone or possible less. It feels like plastic but it seems to be metal.
nice gun..you do a great job on all of your tests and such very entertaining and informative...this is as close to this gun as i will ever see as these new short barrels are not allowed into canada any more..thanks so much
Nice little gun. I wish S&W would produce these J frame .22s and .22 Mags with a 4" barrel so I could buy one and retire my Model 34 Kit Gun. Better to have a .22 mag in your pocket than a .439 Glockenspiel Super Duper Magnum in your drawer at home because it was "too...(adjective of choice)" If we remember that a CC defense gun is meant to "change behavior" and that most assailants prefer unarmed victims, the utility of these is better understood. If someone attacks you, and you shoot them with a .22/.22 mag and they RUN AWAY, to look for a victim that calls 911 when they need a gun....YOU WIN! It is a successful self defense.
@@samtrujillo1932 I have. Not interested. I would prefer a modern made duplicate of the Model 34. All steel, 6 shot, 4" barrel. That's just me. I already have a Model 34. I like it. It works fine, but it is old and is starting to gain in collector value, so I would like to retire it and get a newly made duplicate. I know, not likely
From what ive seen as mag does have an advantage compared to the Lr, 25 and 32 acp. the magnum is actually going fast enough in a short barrel to create expansion and acceptable penetration with pistol powder rounds and the right bullet. Gold dot if I remember correctly.
I saw a comment about “PD” stands for “Premium Dollars”...., lol 😂. I believe PD means “Personal Defence” ....have not a clue on the reason for 351...Fine vid Sootch!
I own this revolver. Bought it for my grandson to use at the range. Try the speed beeze loader. It is now my favorite shooter and both easy to carry as well as accurate and reliable. You can't beat S&W.
Lots of comments about the muzzle looking like 38 cal.. my first notice as well. One quick look revealed that it is recessed. A longer look down the muzzle end needed. If a 22 short is lethal I'm sure this.
beretta989 I thought so too! It looks like it’s chambered for .44, not .22 when viewed from the muzzle end? In some views, it looks like perhaps the muzzle is just enlarged to make it look like it’s a bigger caliber. Maybe to intimidate your attacker?
My EDC. Remember in the majority of cases your not trying to severely harm anyone just need to scare them if they want to do you harm and if you can shoot you k ow where to place the rounds to have the effect you need 👍
Joe May the LCR has a 6 round cylinder and is a double-action only. It’s still a very good revolver. My wife enjoys shooting hers, she has some hand issues and is fairly recoil sensitive.
I have the 351c version with hidden hammer and polymer grip. My favorite carry gun because it is so light and compact. Less than half the weight of my hellcat rdp, and same for the recoil.

That is a nice pistol. I love my S&W 317 Airlite 22lr. Totally fun pistol too.
I've got the 431PD in .32 H&R Magnum. It's called an Airweight but otherwise, the same gun. They only made them for two years but they're ballistics rated like a .38 special, but with 6 rounds!
They offer some pretty nasty rounds for 22mag. I believe it will do the job just fine in a critical situation.
Thats right, I use 50 grain Federal hollows, love this gun.
Taurus 942 in 2in or 3in, steel or ultra light models (24oz & 17.5oz respectively), 8 rounds, gives this revolver some competition..
God bless everyone. Stay vigilant. We have something special here worth protecting🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸✊
Thanks Brother! We sure do!
@Lauryn Jobs You're kidding, right?
Lauryn Jobs About needing a light recoiling 22 ammo.
Dude..its just a revolver.😉
@Lauryn Jobs lol
Original Precision makes a lock-delete plug in the metal to match the hole. I have used a titanium version in my 329PD 44 magnum/44 Special.
I pack one of these every day when me and my wife go for our walk great little gun
I have this handgun for two years I love it, the only con is the heavy trigger
my favorite carry gun,so comfortable, the trigger pull gives me confidence with the rim fire cartridge.
Looking down the barrel as we watch from the video, it has the look of a 357 bore or larger , kinda a intimidating look.
I have the same , only the 351C. Double action only. This is so easy to carry in my pocket in pocket holster.
Beautiful little piece.....I love ,22 for everyday carry.
You really think a 22 is not deadly, especially magnium , got a lot to learn !!
@Aniquin : shot placement is more important then caliber. If you look at the FBI shoot out in Florida in 1985, the agents shot the suspects many times with 38's, 9mm an 12 gauge shotgun rounds. The suspects still killed two agents with a mini 14.
Yeah, that is definitely a dumb statement. You seem to be the one that has a lot to learn Mr 22.
@Aniquin BWA HA HA!
Gimme an OUCH and an AMEN!!
Also, I experienced my pistol shooting to the right. Also, if you squeeze with your finger slightly harder with your offhand, it will keep it from shooting to the right this coming from a left-handed shooter.
Can’t help but believe that the PD stands for “Personal Defense”.
Wanna get hit with a 22 mag??
Why does the barrel looks so big for the caliber??
Yea that really bothers me
I was looking at that too. At 10:35 you get a good look at the barrel. It is sleeved with a modified crown which flairs out to look like a larger caliber at first glance.
If you mean the muzzle, yes it looks like a .38 cal. Strange
Intimidation, you don't want that big hole in you
recessed crown, for some reason
The 351PD as all other Smith & Wessons, does not have a transfer bar. It has a hammer block and rebounding hammer.
I actually knew an officer who carried this as a back up. I was rather surprised by that given his main arm is a .40.
Cult Of Malgus dont know how he got it approved by a dept....so.....pics or it didnt happen
@@morotetsuke as long as he qualifies with it I wouldn't see a problem. Especially in some of the smaller departments.
My old man carried a small S&W .22 auto issued to him as a backup or deep concealment gun as a detective.
@@morotetsuke i'm gonna ask a cop to send me pics of that? lol
@@morotetsuke i carried my primary a backup and a little north american arms 22 in my pocket. If it comes down to needing that who gives a crap if approved or not.
22 Mag packs quite a punch. I sure wouldn't want one shooting at me!
No way I would pay 786.00 dollars for damn 22 pistol.I would pay that for a 357 or 44 magnum but never a 22 man please.
351 PD,..would the PD stand for personal defense?
Nice looking revolver but oh man, the MSRP is 'rough'!
22LR.
Jim Hovater , I think the Scandium/Aluminum alloy is used on the 357 and 44 revolvers.
The 'PD' versions indicate a difference in construction materials
I've always been a big fan of 22 mag. That is a fine looking firearm. I may be falling in love.
Would like one but I can't get past the price. Hope you do a review on the new Taurus 942 8 shot 22mag when they become available.
Taurus 942 8 shot, 2 or 3in barrel!!
@Ali S I believe just 2 or 3 inch. 3 inch would be cool though.
@@BangBangBo can't wait
Can’t find them anywhere
@@jamoe4802 I still haven't seen one
I had 2 friends who had these and both got rid of them. One went back to Smith twice.....finally both got rid of them. One borrowed my Ruger LCR and bought one. I have never had an issue with my Ruger.....wouldn’t touch this one!!!!
I like those wood grips nice little revolver thank you for the video thumbs UP. :) Also thank you to Thad for bringing it to you for the video.
I have the .22lr version, it is well made. Controls are very heavy, shooting single action is unpleasant due to the small and sharp hammer profile. But, very light and easy to carry.
That's a revolver that screams buy me! Looks like fun man
I had that exact model and traded it I got a little boot out of the deal I got the double action only model it’s slick for front pocket carry in a DeSantis don’t want the hammer getting caught on anything I like the dot sight on the double as well,,,also you can lock these up from shooting them too fast too often because of the material they are made out of some kind of aluminum alloy scandium or something I really like mine I only carry Hornady critical defense made for a short barrel revolver I like the spear gold dot variant of that however in my area it’s hard to find,,,another issue I have with mine is occasional keyholing that’s not uncommon for a short barrel 22 Magnum I also have a couple different North American arms mini revolver‘s that do the same thing,,, this isn’t my first choice for concealed carry however sometimes a small gun is just exactly what you need
Thank you so much for this review. I’m considering buying this revolver.
I held one of these at my local gun store and it was so light weight I couldn’t believe it. It’s about the same weight as my iPhone or possible less. It feels like plastic but it seems to be metal.
This just might be my next acquisition 👍🏼
That 1900fps on the box is through a rifle. Out of a snubby its more like 1100-1200fps
nice gun..you do a great job on all of your tests and such very entertaining and informative...this is as close to this gun as i will ever see as these new short barrels are not allowed into canada any more..thanks so much
I'm a senior and carry my 351PD in a belly band=very comfortable and ez to get at.
Have you looked into the S&W model 317?
All aluminum 3", with adjustable sights in .22lr.
My wife loves hers.
She has wrist issues and its not a bad kick back for her.
Powerful Personal Defense for sure
How pleasant. Appreciate the uploads!
Thanks for watching Luis!
From what ive seen as mag does have an advantage compared to the Lr, 25 and 32 acp. the magnum is actually going fast enough in a short barrel to create expansion and acceptable penetration with pistol powder rounds and the right bullet. Gold dot if I remember correctly.
PD must stand for Premium Dollars !!
@@callawayken650 nope premium dollars!!!
Or Personal Defense?
Just sayin'.
I hope the flared muzzle isn't only cosmetic. In such a short barrel I would expect it to appreciably reduce velocity.
Awesome revolver, nice to have one always in your edc bag
I prefer the 351c no external hammer no key lock/ Hillary hole. big dot front sight along with Speer Gold Dot 40 grain short barrel formula ammo
You can't beat S&W.
how accurate?
PD="purty deadly"....lol. Great lookin' air weight revolver!!
Lots of comments about the muzzle looking like 38 cal.. my first notice as well.
One quick look revealed that it is recessed. A longer look down the muzzle end needed.
If a 22 short is lethal I'm sure this.
The barrel looks huge for a 22mag.
beretta989 I thought so too! It looks like it’s chambered for .44, not .22 when viewed from the muzzle end? In some views, it looks like perhaps the muzzle is just enlarged to make it look like it’s a bigger caliber. Maybe to intimidate your attacker?
@Mr. Sandoval no, the muzzle is absolutely larger than .22
@Mr. Sandoval oh really? maybe you should watch at 3:16 and tell me you don't see the obvious flaring of the muzzle.
@Mr. Sandoval cool story bro. It does not change the fact that you are absolutely wrong. He didn't mention it because he didn't feel it was relevant.
My EDC. Remember in the majority of cases your not trying to severely harm anyone just need to scare them if they want to do you harm and if you can shoot you k ow where to place the rounds to have the effect you need 👍
Would like to see a comparison between this and Ruger LCR 22 mag.
I just can’t get over that price tag.
ATI makes a scorpion AR grip that makes it feel like an automatic handgun grip. I have it on my Taurus 85 38 special.
