In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to The Longest Day by Iron Maiden. On this Memorial Day, I'm lifting up the spirit of Memorial Day by including one of IM's classic songs about war...in this case, a depiction of D-Day. As Usual IM doesn't disappoint!

I remember when it was new people kept complaining it's not classic Maiden and now it's considered a classic by most. I like that they grow musically and try new things, it makes their new work worth listening to. If people don't like it they can listen to the old albums. I feel the same about their recent album. Some may not like it but I think a few years down the line people won't care what year this was and if it's "real Iron Maiden".

Nice. I don't think that Maiden's intent was to glorify war, especially not with lines like "puking, shaking fear", and "to take a bullet for those who sent them here". The song has a gritty realism, and is an homage to the dead that necessarily involves giving vivid descriptions of the horrors that they endured. There are also definitive anti-war songs on the A Matter Of Life And Death album.
The A Matter Of Life And Death album is one of my favorite Maiden albums. It's very cohesive from beginning to end, and contains absolutely zero filler. It's criminally underrated.

I can see Maiden fans enjoying it, but not seeing it make any new fans with its stand-out complexity because there is none. The only thing I found interesting is the double-kick action and I didn't think Nicko McBrain was into much of that, which is unfortunate. Guys like Nicko and Vinnie Appice have no idea what they are missing in utilizing the double-kick.

Sadly, Iron Maiden's last truly wonderful album was 1988's Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Sure, they've had moments of brilliance on most of their post-Seventh Son albums, but over all they lack the memorable melodies and tight production that Martin Birch had given them. Also, Bruce's vocals aren't nearly as good as they once were. Finally, the songs are overly long and, well, flat out boring. (This is also known as the "Progressive Rock Almost Always Sucks" rule.)

    • @brianthomas5260

@@mournblade1066 I thought the same thing about Seventh Son being their last great album. I hated their next two albums and I never even listened to the two without Bruce. And never heard another song until about five years ago I heard those kids do some covers of songs I never heard. This being one of them. And it got me to listen to the whole album of “A Matter of Life and Death” I loved it. Then I heard their cover of “Ghost if a Navigator” from you Brave New World” and was amazed. So if you’ve never given BNW a listen to, you should. I think it’s better than 7th Son.

Brave New World is probably the best post-Seventh Son album (well, Fear of the Dark probably is), but even then it pails compared to their earlier stuff. The production of Brave New World onward is awful--they're all recorded live in the studio, instead of individually multitracked.

Greetings from Germany, Doug - I'd like to throw the song The Nomad from Iron Maiden into the ring - it is wonderful just how they put oriental music flair into this one. I instantly was sent back emotionally to the university days where I had the luck to belong to a expedition party making a Trans-Sahara drive with Bedouins (The Nomads!) and Jeeps to later find out that this route has been cancelled from the Paris-Dakar Rallye due to its difficulty grade. The song brought me back to this travel, to the people of the sand, the wind, the motion, the desert. Iron Maiden understands it artistically and beautifully to pay tribute to them - especially noteworthy is the magnific and awesome instrument part in the middle of the song. You might try it out - it is something more unusual for Maiden - at least in my layman ears. And again congratulations for your vlog - I really enjoy it - especially the part that you came to like Iron Maiden at last - I couldn't be wrong to turn to to Bruce once upon a time - i.e for over 33 years (being 49yo)- Cheers and stay safe, Chris

Yes! Glad we are back to Maiden Mondays! Understand there is a version of this song edited with the start of the movie Saving Private Ryan, very dramatic and matching The Longest Day tune. Respect for your military even though I am not from the US. Can´t wait to see To tame a land reaction, another superb song. Keep going Doug!

It’s taken me a very long time, but Nomad is starting to grow on me, kind of like how the more I listen to Blaze Era songs the more they grow on me. It’s a song I used to skip over a lot whenever I listened to Brave New World.

Great to see Maiden Mondays are back! You should do 'Journeyman', the only acoustic track Iron Maiden has recorded (so far).
Also, of all the war songs they've done, 'Afraid to Shoot Strangers' is really something special. I'd love to see a reaction to that as well!

Dimmu Borgir - The Serpentine Offering. Probably too soon to hear this kind of metal but the symphonic arrangements that Dimmu does is what makes the band special in my opinion.

Now that is a perfect Monday.
Thanks Doug for all your time invested in your channel, and letting us discover great music all around.
But hey ;-) I mostly comment on Iron Maiden songs... when you are a die hard fan, it's the only way of life (100% joking here, there are music I love and some I dislike. Music, like all other arts, has this greatness of providing enjoyement to everyone, with such a variety of styles and sounds)
And truely, those days I listen most of my Iron Maiden on Mondays (guess where...), and all the 6 other days are for other bands.

@Doug Helvering That's great ! You're becoming a fan of Dave Murray's guitar, haha, the instrument's timbre and phrasing are unmistakable, we fans know when the solo is Dave's or Adrian's or Janick's. Up the Irons! On this song the first solo was by Adrian Smith, the Second by Dave.
