My father was one of those brave men who landed on the Normandy beaches and was one of the lucky ones who survived. He was always very reluctant to talk about his experiences, but after sitting through the first 10 min or so of Saving Private Ryan, he had to leave the room. Later he said was too realistic and the memories it brought back were just too much, so he couldn't continue watching.
Anyway what a great song from Iron Maiden. An excellent tribute to all those who fought for our freedom during the Normandy invasion. I will always remember them with the greatest of pride and gratitude.

And here in Europe, people are more and more forgetting their own histories. Forgetting the sacrifices of those great men to ensure freedom for the peoples of Europe. I somewhat fear that history indeed is doomed to repeat itself, seeing how populist far-right parties and their entourages are on the rise yet again.

Indeed the second costliest beach in terms of allied deaths, about 1000 casualties including over 300 KIA's. The Canadians infantry units in the first wave were virtually wiped out but follow up units were able to push inland further than any other allied army. It certainly is a miracle that the invasion was a success.

I am a German man (50 yrs). I just saw the opening scene of "Saving Private Ryan", and I realized again that I can live a life in freedom only because the allied soldiers of WW2 gave their precious lives. I actually know no words to express my gratitude, but THANK YOU. I am absolutely ashamed of the developments that lead to the Third Reich and of the politics and culture of the Nazis. I know that neither I nor my generation are responsible for that, but me and my generation have a solemn responsibility that those developments never happen again. My whole generation is responsible to create a peaceful future, and especially we Germans, for our grandparents started the evil Nazi era. We have to tell those stories over and over again. They shall never be forgotten, so that they hopefully never occur again.

It isn't easy to watch, even after almost 20 years, but it is an important thing to remember because too many people don't really understand the reality of war. If we don't know the horror of war, we will be more likely to enter another one that could potentially be avoided. Great video!

Thanks again for covering this song and the subject of PTSD. In case you didn't know Bruce Dickenson is a PHD in music and a BS in history. The whole band is amazing individually. As you know I'm a veteran and when someone thanks me for my service, I say. Don't thank me. Im just a poor shlub that got hurt and sent home. If you really want to thank someone, Thank my brothers and sisters who will never come home. They paid the real price.

That's funny, I actually did my own cut of the film to that song 2 years ago today in honor of the battle at D-Day. Thought it was mine for a sec lol. It was the third on that list.

Fantastic comments Kel. I appreciate your heart. Uncomfortable is right, and the world is full of horrors. I also never forget that the country we are so proud of, so quick to say is the center of defending freedom, is built upon a land that 90% of the inhabitants lost their lives in genocide so that it can exist as it is today. I always start there when I look at the dirt under my feet.

Hi guys, this was my 1st time hearing this Maiden track and as usuall it was epic maiden.watching the vid of PR with your reaction was really emotional for me too.
Bruce's vocals touch us deeply inside, and the music surrounds his vocals with masterly control.
Stevs H is a great songsmith he touches me with his talent.
Seeing as we are on the theme of past wars my request this time is from Magnum.
    #magnum #soilderoftheline #england
This track has some great timing changes and has a catchy chorus i hope you have a listen to it even in private if you cant do a reaction vid at the moment.
    All the best.🎧🎧🎧

America saved the world on that day leading it to ultimate victory over evil. The souls are in a special place. My son served in Iraq & the aftermath of his experience is traumatic still 10 years later. Christopher Santos currently of Austin TX we love you for dedicating your life to the country following 9/11 .... still runs deep.

The allieds were not only American but consisted of Americans, Canadians, British and free French airborne troops. I think the Russians had something to do with the German defeat as well :-)

Kel - you have an awesome heart! If you guys decide to watch the movie, skip the beach landing scene at the beginning. That's the most graphic but truest depiction I've seen of what that must have been like. There are other graphic scenes throughout the movie, but nothing compared to that. Thanks for sharing that with us! BIG shout out to my brothers and sisters that served - past, present and future!

My father landed on Gold beach, to the left of Omaha. 6:30am June 6th 1944, first wave. He was the 3rd man off the LSI, but the first to get to the beach. Man 1 was shot, man 2 had a radio with a set of spare batteries - he stepped off the ramp straight into the water and didn't come up. The defenders were German and mostly OK (just regulars) but the SS were full of Nazi arrogance. My dad took one SS back on a jeep for interrogation. The guy acted as if he was in a B movie; he lolled in the back of the GP, all relaxed, with a smoke. Which he blew in my father's face and told him (in perfect English) 'You know, you're... going to loose this war.' With a lazy smile. My father's reaction: he chambered a round in his sten and held it pointed at the guy.
8 months without a bath, or sleeping in a bed. "Jerry on 2 sides!" On 3 sides! On 4 sides! 101 small incidents, bodies, the horses and cows in the fields dead, or lowing in discomfort as they had not been milked. The lines of thousands of unhomed people struggling ... somewhere, anywhere else. Sitting with a distraught 18 yo kid who had to drive a munitions truck along a road taking mortars; he was terrified by thoughts of the bright light from behind. Things out of place (like when house clearing: kicking a kitchen door in to find an old Italian woman (in Germany?) in black facing him, sitting in front of a table with a heap of odd paper money on it. In the same room, a big walk-in wooden wardrobe. The woman looked at him. He sensed - there was someone in the wardrobe! Swung gun to it, then realised. The woman was negotiating with him (with some foreign solder, with whom she could not speak) with all the money she could find. To buy the life inside the wardrobe.... my father just backed out, leaving it all; who was in the wardrobe he never knew).
Looking over a town from a hill, seeing that no one structure was left standing; clubbed to rubble by bombs and shells. The next city - just the same. The way the ground bounced when there was a big shoot (my father was a signalman, working phones for an artillery unit) and threw up the dust from the ground. Becoming able to sleep with all those big guns firing. Arresting a German soldier taking a dump with his pants down, my father armed with only a pair of pliers (he was doing lines maintenance). My father came up behind the fellow as he squatted and touched the skin at the base of the guy's back with the tip of the pliers. A good laxative, apparently.
You could smell the extermination camps 5 miles away.
So, in the 1990's, I went to see Saving Private Ryan. It was very personal, intense and loud on the big screen; I gripped the seat in shock at the landing thinking "my dad did this... my dad did this...". I told him about it when I got home. He was old and like to rest across the sofa. He listened to the story. I ended, saying "You should have gone to see the film!"
He lay there, fingers steepled, eyes closed. "I don't have to".
In the later years he started an association of old soldier doing school visits. The message: Don't believe the films. There is no glory in war

My parents did not partake in the war because they where to young, but they were alive during it.
And even though they were not directly in it they still remember having to close blinds at night not to give out to much light that could be used by bombers and use special army flashlights that gave just a small targeted amount of light.
And hearing Hitler on the radio, a reason why my mother has a hard time with the German language to this day.

I hope people remember 23-26 October 1944. The largest naval battle in history including the land battle 17 October - 26 December 1944. Leyte. As important to the Pacific people as D-Day was for Europe. My father was there. "Pacific" - what an ironic name.

Had those men not made the ultimate sacrifice this world would look a lot different. 80+% of the men in the first two waves died. Too many people have a sanitized view of what combat is really like.
My biggest concern is that 75% of the eligible young men today don’t meet the minimum requirements. Weight, education, etc.
