In this episode of #thedailydoug, I'm making it a Masterpiece Maiden Friday by completing my exploration of their classic 1988 album Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Over the course of the channel, I've listened to four of the eight songs from the album, and now it's time to listen to the rest. In this video, I'll hear Moonchild, Can I Play With Madness, The Evil That Men Do, and Only the Good Die Young. And, I'll weave together the album's concept and narrative as we go. Come along for the ride! Up the Irons!

I wish I could hear Moonchild again for the first time.
And then, I wish I could see every single person hearing it for the first time. I've always loved this song, and hurts me how relatively underrated it is
Same as you, this song kicked my ass when I first heard it as a teenager
Especially the solo part and the bridge
Bruce's vocal's were supposedly done in one take. Amazing.
Discovering Maiden for the first time is something that will stay with me forever.
"Moonchild": What a strong song to start an album, and what a tempo! A strong statement of Nicko to keep the pace. Incredible.
This album, together with its predecessor "Somewhere in time" are where Maiden peaked - for me at least. I know "Powerslave" is often regarded as their masterpiece, but as a fan of Prog, you can't deny that the two albums I meantioned have more complex songwriting, more intricate soundscapes. When Adrian Smith left the band after this, an inevitable decline happened, imho.
Same for me, I'm more on those 2 albums, yet I also like quite a lot of songs from Piece of Mind as well.
Powerslave is in itself probably the album I have listened the least, but I have listened to those major songs on live albums.
They got back to this level of prog/creativity on The Final Frontier, IMO, but yes, this was the pinnacle of their classic period.
Agree!
Big fan of Somewhere in Time, but Seventh Son is a little too pompous and dry by comparison to SIT for my liking, and I also think the lyrics took a step down, although I don't think any 80's Iron Maiden album has particularly good lyrics with the possible exception of Piece of Mind.
Very mega! agree
Pure magic this album. Every song, every lyric, the vocals, the artwork, the riffs, the soloing, the harmonies, the sound… my all time Maiden favourite. Great reaction! I love Bruces evil laugh at the end after “seven paths to hell” instead of the “and your trip begins” at the beginning of the album.
Agreed but Madness is the weak point of the album for me.
I mean Can I play with Madness and Only the Good Die Young are not on the level of the others. Infinite Dreams, The Prophecy and The Clairvoyant better than the rest. The others are middling (which is 9 out of 10 on this great album).
Indeed one of their best albums and it also got sins. I like the older albums but also Bruce Dickinson’s comeback album Brave New world.
Definitely
That "Evil that men do" chorus will stay stuck in your head all day.
This album represents Maiden at their most progressive, where progressive doesn't mean songs being longer than they need to be.
Exactly. No fluff
AMOLAD 🤔
I know these days they get accused of “overindulging”, but it should also be considered that they have 3 very talented lead guitarists who are coming up with some of their best ideas, they have 4 very good songwriters (Steve, Bruce, Adrian and Janick) who have so much to contribute, sometimes it comes across as overindulgence, but I don’t think it’s deliberate, it’s more “that’s too good to leave out”…. There are a small handful of occasions where they probably should’ve shortened parts, or at least varied it a little so that its not too repetitive, like The Angel And The Gambler and its 500 runs of the chorus 😂, and as much as I love Hell On Earth, that opening 2 and half minutes probably could’ve been half that, same as the outro, and I would’ve preferred a second run of the chorus instead.
I think a lot of the time when they are in the 10+ minutes range, it’s just right, sometimes it’s a little bit too much but I don’t think they were being intentionally overindulgent, and a handful of times it was totally unnecessary… but they are where they are because they’ve always done it their way.
Plus a lot of prog just throws stuff in to throw it in and it takes away from the overall vibe of the song. They keep it all coherent.
@@CoffeeMatt10 I'd argue that Dave Murray is a much better songwriter than Jannick. There are times I wish he'd be kicked out of the band. He acts like a fool on stage, not like the rest of the band.
Only the good die young. Such an underrated song, a true gem, one of my favorites
Me too! and never play live!!
Would be awesome for maiden to close the show with this song but I think the ferosious ending I think would kill Nicko lol
Sooo true
My favourite Maiden song of all time.
Absolute killer.
I’d give my left bollock to see them play it live
I was 10 when this came out, I can still remember my brother bringing it home and listening to it the first time. I fell in love with Maiden that day and I'm still in love 35yrs later. Up the Irons.
Just want to emphasize that from 28:33 - 28:44 is Steve Harris playing at what I can only describe as a BLISTERING speed. He's a huge inspiration to me as a Bass player and a genuinely unique talent. All of the boys in Maiden are genius talents but the way Steve composes and ties everything in is just remarkable.
Up the Irons.
Not to detract from Steve, but the way he sounds is made easier by A LOT of compression, so that he just has to brush the strings with the pulp of his fingers.
I'm not disagreeing with you but that's only 11 seconds
Bruce's most ferocious vocals on this in my opinion. Nicko's best drumming, and the best peak of composing in particular. A top 3 Maiden album for me. Thank you Doug!
I think he went harder on Fear of the Dark overall, but he was definitely getting pretty aggressive by this point.
@@alphaenemyplus8376 I know what your saying, but the songwriting didn't really highlight it like it did on this record. They've always gone 110% live though, when it comes to energy they are definitely one of the greatest of all time overall. IMO
@@JackMcLeodJr I agree with all of that. 7th Son ended their best era, and though they still put out quality songs now and again, it'd be foolish to expect them to top anything from then.
I would say his vocals on Somewhere in Time are even more ferocious, with Seventh Son a close second. For example, on songs like "Caught Somewhere in Time", "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner", "Deja-Vu" and "Alexander the Great". Yet at the same time he evolved even more on Seventh Son when it came to singing in different voices and the way he told the story through his different vocal styles. How exciting it must have been to be a Maiden fan back in the day who experienced the band's evoution from the Di'Anno days to Seventh Son. I can hear the seeds of their album Brave New World on Seventh Son but that's another story from awesome Maiden history. Up the irons.
@@665don667 Me too! Specially Ghost of the navigator! Could easily have been on this album.
My absolute favourite Maiden album ever. Bought this in 1989 when I was 14 and when Moonchild kicked in, man I was hooked.
Still my go to album now.
This is my favourite album of all time. Powerslave to Seventh Son is where Maiden hit their zenith, but Seventh is my favourite because I'm a sucker for a concept album. I love the proggier synthy sound, every band member is absolutely on point, and the song writing is impeccable. This is a truly truly special album in my opinion.
Both synth albums are my all time favs from them. So underrated
Adrian Smith's guitar solo in Only The Good Die Young is 🔥🎸💯
The best sound, the sound of the drums, the voice of Bruce, the songs, the artwork, all in this álbum is perfect. Greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
Yeah, this album sounds the best of them all.
El mejor disco de maiden ctm lml
What a masterpiece of an album
This album did not disappoint. In an era when most albums had two or three good tracks, this album was full of great songs. Not a crappy one on here.
Can I play with madness, I don't like it. But seventh son is the best Iron Maiden album after somewhere in time, in my list of Iron Maiden albums
@@jobbus22 i agree. Never liked that one either. Too "happy" and pop for this album.
I actually think they challenged themselves- in the pop crazy 80s- to write a “pop” song. It’s much slicker than most of their catalogue, but it’s still recognisably Maiden. And is a good, hook laden pop suit, to boot. It was a big hit in the UK (number 3, I think), and presumably had some success elsewhere
Two or three good tracks? Surely you're not talking about Iron Maiden album (not involving Blaze). If so, put down the bong and go outside for a very long time.
@@headhunter8106 Matter of opinnion. Brave New World was the last Maiden album i bought and even then i regretted ever even bought the reckord. After that haden´t done the same mistake. For earlier reckords i rememberet every single song from the albums (well not those two crappy with Bailey) and i know every note from the songs. I hear instantly if something is played differently as in album.
Those "new" albums after Bruce came back are mostly like radio play shit. Goes in from one ear and comes out from another.
Steve Harris must go down as one of the best lyricists of all times. The grey matter that guy has is mind blowing.
Great album. great storytelling... from a band at the top of their game. What I love about Maiden is their self-belief in their own music - if you like it; great... if you don't; fine. They don't care. Who needs airplay or mainstream acceptance... absolute art.
The first 7 MAIDEN albums pretty much represent the Holy Grail of Heavy Metal. During that era they were by far the be-all and end-all in this area and SEVENTH SON is their last great masterpiece.
As for 80's metal, I would put Metallica and Queensryche ahead of Maiden but, to each his own.
@@ryanjacobson2508 When those bands released their debuts, MAIDEN already had a number of albums out. Plus none other band had a 7(!) album run of that influencial quality standard at that time, so no, i kindly disagree. Having 1 or 2 great albums out during a decade doesn't even remotely compare you to MAIDEN, it's not even in the same ball park.
@@mikevillain666 Correct. 7th masterpiece in a row. Queensryche's 7th was Q2K. Metallica's 7th was Reload. That's the difference.
@@abbieandus Plus the fact how many legions of bands after them sound like they sound just because of KILLERS alone.
I'd argue their reunion output (and The X Factor) are all up there with the first seven albums. Maiden never peaked. They're still peaking.
Die-hard fan since '85. This is still my favorite. Pair it with Somewhere in Time, and you have my personal high school soundtrack.
Phenomenal concept album. Peak Maiden.
In my opinion, one of their best 3 albums they ever made , if not the best . Superb from the start with Moonchild , the epic SSOASS, and to end with Only the good die young- goosebumps
Remember watching this live in Stockholm, absolutely epic gig. Helloween as supporting act was also great.
This was the first metal cassette I owned. I was 14ish and instantly fell in love with the band. I've been lucky enough to set them several times over the years. They are such an amazing band in all of their line ups and insanely good live.
My experience exactly :)
One of the things I've love about your reaction is that it makes me want to go back and listen to these albums I love with new ears.
Thanks for finishing up this amazing album. When it came out in '88, I was 17 and my mom had passed away the previous year. Iron Maiden let me escape reality for a bit and get through some tough times. Still one of my top five favorite albums. Cheers, and Up the Irons!
I felt that comment. Iron Maiden helped me get over a lot in the eighties.
Still my favourite Maiden album after 35 years, can’t wait to see them in again in July. Up the Irons🤘
Up the Irons, and my favourite too.
My favorite Maiden album easily, and top 3 metal albums of all-time for sure.
The best of the beast without a doubt, a masterful balance on each track, in each riff, with rock hymns that still ring today. Absolute credit to the engineering work of the great Martin Birch R.I.P, Long live the Iron Maiden. keep enjoying doug
The sound quality is amazing
This album was what introduced me to Iron Maiden way back in 1988 and to this day, it is still my favourite album, by anyone, of all time. Love your work!
Maiden have so many terrific albums but this one, after all these years, remains my favorite.
This is an album that is a must to listen it from beginning to end. And by the way, the end of “The Prophecy” ends with acoustic guitar 😉
This is my favorite album of all time. Also, one of the best *sounding* (from a production standpoint) metal albums ever. The mix is so good that you can pinpoint every single instrument and pick out all the little nuances.
Somewhere In Time, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and Brave New World are my top albums. They're equally top 1 for me. So many incredible tracks on each album. I love how they change the sound for each album. Makes all the albums stand out more and gets more memorable, which makes Iron Maiden very unique. Thanks Doug for digging more and more into Maiden! Much love! ❤
The only thing better than hearing TSSOASS on vinyl is hearing and seeing these tracks LIVE! I've only seen Maiden live 6 times but they are the greatest concerts I've ever been to!🤘🤘
A Matter Of Life And Death is another great album. Very underrated.
To me that's the only complete album since 7th Son, every song fits, no filler, just great proggy Maiden.
true
Very boring album.
Right there with you, their last truly great album ,imo
My first touch with Maiden and still their only album without a „skip track“ for me - it is a masterpiece and the end of their golden era 82-88. Still a big fan but IMHO nothing later came close…
What song do you skip in SIT?
Or Iron Maiden or killers? Lol. To each his/ her own
I used to skip Sea Of Madness and Alexander The Great but learned to appreciate those songs more now. Deja Vu is probably my favorite or Stranger In A Strange Land.
@@topfloorstudio2684 I can't believe anyone would skip Sea of Madness 😭
Alexander the Great is such an underrated classic!
Funny thing about this album...The one song that ended up being the most popular, and even had radio play (Can I Play With Madness), is my least favorite song on the record.🤔 At first, my fav was 'Infinite Dreams', then it was 'The Clairvoyant', then 'SSoaSS', then 'The Prophecy'.. This album was actually my introduction to Iron Maiden about 25 years ago. Damn thing blew me away, and I knew I had to check out more of them. All these years later and they are still one of my favorite bands.👍😎🤘
I love that all these years later in Maiden fandom we all (including Bruce) sing "Can I Play with Agnes?" live. Listen to a few of the live shows of this track and you can catch him being the jokester he is.
Oh, and don't forget the ever-popular "Fear of the Duck."
I always heard magnets lol
Up to that moment, every album... absolute perfection by Maiden. Cheers
Saw Iron Maiden play on a Friday the 13th in Toronto back in 2012. Their opener was Moonchild. Just chills. So amazing.
Seriously, these are my 4 favourite songs on this album. I love this album. Top ten of all time. Somewhere is also great.
The moment you stopped hating Iron Maiden's musical structure, you started enjoying it. The magic is the voice of Bruce Dickinson, the lyrics, the synergy that occurs in the mix of everything... It's like a storyteller with a good soundtrack.
I was at college (17 years old), when this was released - Still one of my favourite albums of all time, every track is fantastic.
The first ever time I listened to Iron Maiden was this album. Still the best for me.
The best, by far
Bought this CD in 88 upon release, it never gets old. I still listen to it in its entirety. The bookend intro/outro emphasize the masterpiece.
Clairvoyant and The Prophecy are underrated tracks and necessary for the concept.
A “desert island” album for Me.
Great reaction Doug. You asked about Only The Good Die Young and I always assumed it was the opposite to your interpretation. Not that he would live on and give in to evil, but it was him saying he was going to die, either he had a premonition or was going to commit suicide. I get that from these lines in the song:
"Time it waits for no man
My future it is revealed
Time it waits for no man
My fate is sealed"
then: "If I cancel tomorrow the undead will thank me today"
then: "The moon is red and bleeding
The sun is burned and black
The book of life is silent
No turning back"
then: "So I think I'll leave you
With your bishops and your guilt
So until the next time
Have a good sin"
They all point to him deciding to die in my interpretation. But I can see what you mean also - just never struck me that way!
I forgot how good this album is as you named each song I could hear each of them in my head what a masterpiece
22 people disliking him doing this album, ridiculous, so good and I learned just watching him listen to it. Keep it up, this is awesome
It's really cool to see a man of your intelligence and expertise enjoying and having fun with the songs of this band that we love so much!!!
Even more so when you play the piano and play along with their music learning their songs!!! So much fun!!! 🙃
This album is so unique. There were at their most creative and ambitious.
The best album from Maiden to date.
I would argue that Senjetsu is of the same calibre!!
I discovered Maiden in 1988 via “The Evil That Men Do” music video. Maiden is still my favorite band and “The Evil That Men Do” is also still my favorite Maiden song.
Watching Doug sing a bit of Evil That Men Do was such a good feeling moment! ❤ Watching from 2020 Covid days and to see him now knowing band members names, dynamic and more is so entertaining. Up The Irons!
Pure maiden magic
I first heard this this when I was 10-11. I'm 40 now. I was into some light rock at the time but had never heard anything like this - it was an older cousin who had the shirts, posters etc. And being impressionable I thought I'd copy him and ended up buying this as I thought the artwork looked incredible. I was into fantasy and wargames at the time which had a lot of high quality art and visuals so I guess like a lot of young people the artwork is what drew them in.
It's one of the albums I grew up with and still has a fond place in my heart today. Recall a lot of my younger times when I listen to it.
Such a fantastic album from start to finish. I was hard into Maiden when this came out, and their supporting tour was my 2nd of 10 times seeing them live! This was the soundtrack to my Junior year at the University.
First time I got to see Maiden live, they opened with this one, (edited to add, I was referring to “Moonchild.) and the synth part was played on guitar instead. It was absolutely breathtaking! #UpTheIrons
Definitely in TOP 3 of Maiden albums
My all time favourite album. I still listen to it now. Seeing your reaction was just brilliant. Sending you Maiden power from Newmarket in England. I really enjoy all your vids. Well done.
I got this album when I was 9 years, old. I am 42 now, and still listening to it. It truly is one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time.
One of the best concepts albums ever. From start to finish. Great T-shirts and posters came out of this album.
Need to listen to entire somewhere in time album
This is my favourite Maiden album. I was 10 years when It came out and it was my brother's birthday present.
I love this album. Up the Irons and
Greetings from Seville, Spain.
Hi Doug, listening live from Wales UK. My favourite album and my favourite RUclipsr. Thanks Doug, awesome programme. Matt 😊👍👍
Swansea here myself 🏴 👍🏻 great taste mate!
Another in Swansea, love this album. Would love Doug to do the whole album in one go.
Haha! Live from Kenfig Hill. Small world. The Welsh got good taste see😄👌
I’m here in Pontypool. I’ve been into Maiden since ‘86. This was the first CD i ever bought and I’ve listened to it so many times over the years. Up the Irons.
Loved that Doug, thanks very much. I got into your channel when you first did Maiden's Fear Of The Dark and have loved it ever since/ Keep up the good work. Cheers
Imagine being in the crowd with Moonchild as the opening number. It'd be pandemonium. Bit like Aces High as the opener. I was in an Aussie crowd when they opened with Aces High, the whole place was nuts! Was great
Start to finish, this album is absolute PEAK Iron Maiden. This whole album is all killer no filler. One of the best metal albums ever recorded... Bruce's performance on this album is second to none! Complete masterclass!
To me SSOSS is Maidens pinnacle.
Hello Doug! (: Youre Maiden reactions are just gorgeous! I love Maiden! You have to listen to A Matter of Life and Death -> The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg and For the Greater Good of God. Greatings from Germany
Mr. Helvering if you haven't you must attend one of their concerts. It is life changing, I saw them last Oct. and they were just as good as now as they were in the 80's.
I saw them 6,times.
Yes
Saw them in October as well. Worc. MA great show!
Nope. Even as a lifelong fan. They are great live, yet there's a shitload of bands that are better on stage.
@@ralfkohler3671 I agree there are, laugh if you want, a couple of the best shows I've been to Alice Cooper, and Weird Am Yankovic.
Such a great album, definitely their climax creatively. They've done tons of great stuff since then but the magic of the 80s certainly stayed in the 80s.
Three words. Brave New World.
@@KeimpeJ i'd say their best 3 albums post bruce/adrian return were brave new world , dance of death and final frontier
The album from the year I was born. Probably the best album overall of the best band overall. They completely devastated my music taste in the best possible way.
I'll be forever grateful to the guy at school that told me "You should try this".
This was also a great concert to attend. Iron maiden had a run of five albums that none could touch. My favorite is Powerslave which was the first they started using synths in. Infinite Dreams is my favorite song from 7th Son.
My favorite also. Song is just amazing
Synths on Powerslave? Where? I thought Somewhere in Time is the first time they used synths (Adrian Smith played a guitar synth on that album).
@@mournblade1066 By George you are correct!!! I was thinking parts of Rime of the Ancient Mariner. But you are right, it was Somehwere in Time...also a superb album. Thanks for pointing that out.
@@jimmygrant3151 You can't go wrong with their first seven albums--a streak of great albums that no other band has equaled.
Well thats what I call a great idea! Looking forward to seeing your analysis of the rest of the album
I just found your stuff love it I've felt this way for years. Thanks ❤
Wow, thanks man. This album is the album that made me step over the threshold, into the metal world. I basically wore out the cassette tape back in 1988. It is definitely one of the best albums of all time and it's value is going up with every passing year.
Cheers for this timeless masterpiece and an excellent analysis!
It was my first Maiden album, it’s my favorite Maiden album. So many listens and analysis of what everything means, the musicianship, the craft of it all. I think it’s the band’s opus but somehow still underrated at times. Glad you took the time to hear all of it and break it down!
Maiden's song "Book of Souls" Live at Donington is FULL ON Maiden!!!
This, to me, is the very pinnacle of Iron Maiden. Maybe it's because it was my first album, I bought this when I was 13. I still love it to this day. The mysticism, the esoteric, and the sometimes sinister lyrics coupled with superb musicianship make this a true masterpiece or magnum opus IMHO. Great video - was fun hanging out on this!
You have an approach on music wich opens known music to me on a new level. Thanx Doug!
Perfect, love it Doug, one of my favorites. I once listened to the hole album as i was driving 200 miles in the night on a road through the woods. That was a great experience.
This is a masterpiece. Thanks! In my mind you can go on to song 2 and repeat and keep the story consistent, forever.
Yes Doug. Right from the start you got Maiden. Loving the drumming, vocals and all of it. This is a fantastic album. So glad you do the research. Some other reactors don't even bother to understand the music. Greetings from Durban South Africa.
I don't know if Moonchild is my _favourite_ Iron Maiden song? (It's a near thing, for sure.) But it's hard to think of a better leading track on *any* album. The progression of the various parts, the lyrics, the vocals, the musicianship, the foothold it establishes for the rest of the album... it's really incredible.
Another awsome reaction to aesome music, thank you for doing this. It's interesting to hear that you are learning by those reactions, because I'm learning alot about the music from your videos that I didn't knewed before, as a long time fan of Iron maiden.
Thank you for bringing this to your fantastic channel. I’ve been a big Maiden fan since 1980 and my opinion is they got better with each album right through the 80s so by the time seven sons was released I was in heaven, but what makes this album stand out more than their predecessors is every song is strong enough to stand alone by themselves or in its order on the album ( what I’m meaning is by playing the album in its order and following the story in your mind / thoughts is brilliant ) .
There isn’t a weak song on this album in my honest opinion and sadly it took till brave new world that they got another album without a weak song .
Keep up the great work :)
From Scotland with appreciation

Hey Doug! I'm really enjoying these reaction videos. I discovered Iron Maiden as 10-year old in '88 and was blown away by the Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son album. A masterpiece, in my opinion, and their absolute peak.
Hey Doug, thanks for this episode! It bring back memories! When I was a teen, at the early 2000, I saved every penny to buy music and, when I got this album, man... I've listened to it so many times! What a wonderful age! Even now, listen to "moonchild", man... it was great to relive that!
Wow, what a way to start your Saturday! SSotSS is still probably my favorite Maiden album. And we've truly made Doug a Maidenhead, glad you enjoyed it! Good explanation of the story too, there were some things I hadn't picked up, so thanks!
The beginning chords of Only The Good Die Young sounds almost identical to the beginning of Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. I think that’s what you meant Doug, I love the idea where they mirrored something from earlier in the album. It’s like chord progression poetry.
I love hearing "seven deadly sins..." lets me know the cd is repeating itself in my car ...what a great record. You mentioned Nightmares in regards to Infinite Dreams...I'd love to see you review Still Life from Piece of Mind.
One more time, Doug :THANK YOU for doing these and making some of the most entertaining videos I've EVER seen In ALL of youtube land! This is amazing seeing the joy of music (I've been into Maiden since I was little) but you break it down from the story to the musical aspect and it makes for a very re-watchable movie, just like the music you are reviewing. I've heard these tracks COUNTLESS times and I find myself coming back to your videos time and time again. MUCH THANKS MAN GREAT JOB
I think Doug should have at least liked your commentary
So glad you are on the Iron Maiden journey. I mostly listen to hard rock/metal but am hoping your channel will help broaden my musical worldview.
When you kick back and enjoy the album in its entirety, don't forget to appreciate all the artwork that went into every nook and cranny of the vinyl album.
This was such a treat. Thank you!
I’m glad you reacted to the rest of this album! Just a great one. The Evil That Men Do is one of my top Maiden songs 🤘🏼 Also, I feel like Only The Good Die Young is one of the most underrated songs on this album.
My favourite Maiden album along with Power slave !!! Sooooo happy you're doing the whole thing ! Thank you !!!!!!!!.... I wish you had listened to the whole thing in one sitting. Infinite dreams, Seventh son of a seventh son, The prophecy and the clairvoyant are a big part of the experience. Not complaining though. But if you do OK Computer (Radiohead) Please don't skip any songs !🤣🤣🤣
Doug, you are the best! I just shared your video on my FB page.
