Paschendale is such an underrated track, a great song-telling of such a horrific battle those young lads endured, so sad and upsetting, but as usual Maiden put it on a pedestal where it belongs, Lest We Forget!
I watched lots of Maiden reactions lately and most of the time Adrian's solos stunned the reactors. No wonder because his Solos are musically more interresting and more melodic. Dave's smooth legato shredding is great but Adrian has just more feeling.

So next time should be Steveth son of the seventh son song or Infinite Dreams from this album oooor Powerslave song written by Bruce with some Egyptian vibe and scale.
In my opinion, one of their top 10 songs and one of the most underrated. Whenever I sit back and close my eyes and listen to this song, the intro feels kind of young and perhaps innocent- it takes me to Macedonia, watching a young ATG tame horses with Phillip. Then the military beat kicks in and you start feeling like he is getting older, his training is nearing completion and he's readying the phalanxes for battle and conquest. You can feel the despair in India as his men mutiny. I wish they could have came up with some lyrics around his golden burial. Truly an epic jam
About the lyrics and the "rap" part, Bruce said that this verse "Hellenism he spread far and wide The Macedonian learned mind Their culture was a western way of life He paved the way for Christianity Marching on, marching on" is one of hardest one's he has ever sung.
There's still a long road ahead but here are my suggestions: - Paschendale - Seventh son of a seventh son - Dance of Death - When the wild wind blows - The talisman - Sign of the cross - To tame a land Greetings ✌️🇲🇽
Burning Ambition, Twilight Zone, Purgatory, Killers, Remember Tomorrow, Prowler, Another Life, Murder In The Rue Morgue, Running Free, Phantom Of The Opera - their best stuff ;)
Check out “Prodigal Son” from the album Killers. Stands out as unique among Maiden songs due to its mostly clean/acoustic guitar and use of 9th chords.
This is definitely the best review I have seen. There is demonstrated real time theory and emotional response in it. Excellent job man. For next review, I suggest To Tame a Land. It’s based on the story of Dune and has AMAZING chops. Lots of middle eastern phrasing and scales.
This solo was made for the solos. Adrian Smith (solo 1) and Dave Murray (solo 2) are so different yet complement each other so well. Both are melodic and take the listener on a journey. It's hard to determine which is best and it always seems to be the one you're listening to at that moment in time. Ultimately, I side with Murray and his fiery finish that starts at 10:00
No lo sé pero cierro los ojos y lloro y disfruto tanto escuchar los instrumentos de Harris, Murray, Smith y MC Brain. Gracias MAIDEN por este Himno Del Metal ❤
you are sucha great pianist, I have good musical "hearing" cuz my family they're all musicians but my mom tried to teach me "solfeo" and I always found it boring xDDD, I can play a little piano, guitar and acordeon just from hearing this is a great reaction to the maidens and here you have my like 👍👍
I think next could be 'Sign of the Cross' (Live in Rio). Another interesting Maiden songs are ''The Thin Line between Love & Hate' and 'Brighter than a Thousand Suns' (Live in Abbey Road).
the 7/8 time in the middle is lifted directly off the Bulgarian folk music...I know...I am Bulgarian and was in a Bulgarian folk dance troupe back in the day...Ръченица it's called...
In my opinion, many older Iron Maiden albums have quite interesting compositions. They were somewhat self-taught, so they did not even know they were "breaking the rules", they just did what sounded good. Natural musicians.
I'd like to hear you react to Phantom of the Opera from their first album. It features their original singer Paul Di'Anno and while most of the other songs on the album are "short rockers", this one is longer and hinted of what was to come.
My favourite Iron Maiden album. Not a weak song on the album, every song offers something different and loads of energy even in the slower tempo songs. I also like the heavier guitar sound, for example the chugging riff in Stranger In A Strange Land. '86 was a great year for metal. Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth and Iron Maiden all released (in my opinion) their best albums that year. I love guitar solos and get frustrated when I hear a metal song without one so to hear him compliment the solos in that way is (if you'll pardon the pun) music to my ears.
You should do Iron Maidens Paschendale. It tells the story of a ww1 battle, the song's got the tempo changes, progressive elements, crispy clear sound on the studio version, and you can find good live versions as well.
It really is amazing to see the difference between someone who understands how music is composed, versus me who simply appreciates music, digest these songs. I have been listening to Maiden for 40 years and am always blown away by them, but this gives me a new appreciation of their talent. To see non metalheads see the quality and beauty of their music and the effort that went into it is really gratifying for me.
Your reactions are not only a "simple" reaction, they are a musical classes. Thank you! From the 80's again, in my opinion, you should react to the song called "To Tame a Land" (Piece of Mind album). Based on the science fiction novel Dune. Author Frank Herbert refused to allow the band to call this song "Dune." The band originally sent a letter to Herbert's agent for permission. The response read as follows: "No. Because Frank Herbert doesn't like rock bands, particularly heavy rock bands, and especially rock bands like Iron Maiden." Songwriter Steve Harris tried to convince Herbert that the song would be a good promo for the book, but he still refused.
@@Benazgul Do you know the story between the song "Reckless" (Judas Priest) and the movie "Top Gun"? It was the other way around with Judas Priest. As the story tells us, Priest were approached in early 1986 for a possibility to offer a theme song for the movie as the soundtrack was due out via Columbia Records. Thus the band played them “Reckless,” which seemed like a perfect fit because of its content and style. Producers of the film liked the song and were ready to attach it over the closing credits, however what sank the deal was their demand that the rights of the track would exclusively go to films soundtrack. It meant Priest could not include it on their forthcoming album and that was just a price too high to pay at the time. Of course no one also knew how successful the film would become.
You're the only reviewer that I recall who has called the 7/8 time immediately. Have a cookie :) Subbed on that alone - notwithstanding that it's Maiden. I've always said that every epic they do is a history lesson. Kids would have more / better grades if they took up listening to them. Apart from the other recommendations below (or above), seriously consider To Tame A Land (based on Herbert's 'Dune) to listen to. It's from the 1983 album Piece Of Mind. This album was 87 or 88 if I recall.
0,56 "I' m working with the studio recording", there is no other possibility, millions of fans are waiting for that song to be played live! Great reaction video as always!
@@corepuncher The live at the rainbow version is excellent but I prefer the 2015 Remaster since the progressions and solos in the song is clearly audible in that one.
This only confirms how interesting this music is also for classical musicians. So complex and at the same time so catchy. All these Iron Maiden songs that are 15 and more minutes long are a symphony in themselves. So many rhythm changes, so many solos...
Holy crap dude, you blow me away with how you're able to just play along. I just started playing piano during Covid and I aspire to be as talented as you are so i can have a blast playing along with my favourite Maiden tunes!!! You are an inspiration!
If you would be down for it, i and many more would love a whole album listening of "Seventh son of a seventh son" by Iron Maiden. But you have to keep an eye on the lyrics, too.
I appreciate just how quickly he identifies meter changes accurately. I disagree a little with his basic analysis a little, but he is apparently just doing it on the fly never hearing it before nor preparing. This song features a lot arrangements functioning as acts as in a play, there is excitement the differing styles, interesting sing-able melodies (again evident Live shows as proof in the pudding) solos ( distinct voices/styles - a success for any musician who knows anything about being a player). yes the song is in )), E Phyrgian primarily... but certainly not all power chords, and what makes any piece of music interesting is intervals - that is the progressions and the melodies. Crazy chords over simple ii V I might be boring as all get out.... endless modal interchange will outside chords can lose even the player's player if losing the essences of being musical! This has lots of arrangements, I thought Doug would have appreciated that more. Very hard to do in a genre where breaks in tempo or meter isn't welcomed especially since this isn't prog metal... but Smith/ Murray write a little prog-like etude/ vamp all in B mixolydian, which explains the mystery-chord and the technique of B power chord to open A, bluesy sound used in House of Bullets, Joe Satriani. This Aminor interlude progression finishes using Phrygian chords, but since they are more turn-around chords, you wouldn't technically say the passage is in A Phrygian -but that is why it flows well. Interestingly, it hasn't been until LITERALLY as I type, that this song is being performed by Iron Maiden on tour now and I have enjoyed learning the song and taking notes on performance/style/fingerings etc. Bruce after throat cancer, lucky to be alive let alone singing, is doing quite well and Nicko at 71, a convert Christian 🙏is not banging the shit out of his kit like 10 years ago, but playing well albeit softer touch. The composer - Doug, might want to start checking out these performance in Dublin, Glasgow and observing how these arrangements affect the audience's energy and generating excitement. Doug was quite correct in identifying Bruce singing a type of aggressive-RAP like a war-chant instead of sounding hip hop-ish... Why this song and Rime of the Ancient Mariner are my favorites is precisely due to arrangements - lots of interesting complete subsets, balance among soaring vocals, percussion/meter changes, melodic etudes and interludes/harmonies as well as tasteful seasoned guitar solos.
Blind Guardian - And Then There Was Silence. A 14 minute metal song with a lot of orchestral parts. I would do more Maiden suggestions but they are already being rained down :)
"To Tame A Land" off of the "Piece of Mind" album released in 1983 is one of their best tracks. Also, "Powerslave" from the album of the same name, released in 1984.

Chalk up another vote for Powerslave. Lots of changes, great rhythmic ideas, great melodies.
You Sir, you are awesome!
I absolutely love the solo and the fact it hangs back
One of my favourite videos on the internet, period. Great work!
About the lyrics and the "rap" part, Bruce said that this verse
"Hellenism he spread far and wide
The Macedonian learned mind
Their culture was a western way of life
He paved the way for Christianity
Marching on, marching on"
is one of hardest one's he has ever sung.
I remember one Year Ago. This video made me subscribe the Channel. The BEST daily Doug ever made!
There's still a long road ahead but here are my suggestions:
- Paschendale
- Seventh son of a seventh son
- Dance of Death
- When the wild wind blows
- The talisman
- Sign of the cross
- To tame a land
Greetings ✌️🇲🇽
Burning Ambition, Twilight Zone, Purgatory, Killers, Remember Tomorrow, Prowler, Another Life, Murder In The Rue Morgue, Running Free, Phantom Of The Opera - their best stuff ;)
Nah...he still gotta learn beast and powerslave :)
lmao yeah how is there nothing from powerslave on here
Check out “Prodigal Son” from the album Killers.
What a masterpiece!
This solo was made for the solos. Adrian Smith (solo 1) and Dave Murray (solo 2) are so different yet complement each other so well. Both are melodic and take the listener on a journey. It's hard to determine which is best and it always seems to be the one you're listening to at that moment in time. Ultimately, I side with Murray and his fiery finish that starts at 10:00
I just discovered that channel and I am now addicted. Those reactions are amazing!
Brighter than a Thousand Suns also a good suggestion.
the 7/8 time in the middle is lifted directly off the Bulgarian folk music...I know...I am Bulgarian and was in a Bulgarian folk dance troupe back in the day...Ръченица it's called...
In my opinion, many older Iron Maiden albums have quite interesting compositions. They were somewhat self-taught, so they did not even know they were "breaking the rules", they just did what sounded good. Natural musicians.
Considering their background, yes they knew the rules, yes they did it on purpose !
@@thedstrings It certainly seems unlikely they would do this without theoretical knowledge.
Children of the Damned. vocals are amazing.!
Got to admit by now that Steve Harris' is quite a musical genius along with the rest of the band
He's the man behind alot of their songs, he's got it all going on in his head.
The reason this sounds so good is Martin "Starfish" Birch. Kevin Shirley can't hold a flame to him!
I'd like to hear you react to Phantom of the Opera from their first album. It features their original singer Paul Di'Anno and while most of the other songs on the album are "short rockers", this one is longer and hinted of what was to come.
First two albums are brilliant, but also basically a different sounding band entirety- very bluesy in places
I’d be interested in seeing you do something really early like Phantom of the Opera, with their original singer.
Suggestion: Bruce's solo career Darkside of Aquarius, The Tower, Jerusalem, Tyranny of Souls. Hugs from Brazil!
The Alchemist!!!
"Chemical Wedding" 😉
Great solo albums!
It's one of their buried treasures, rarely played but genius....love that song!!
A piano version would be incredible!!
Epic song, one of my favorite my number one is Powerslave. Thanks :-)
The Great song ...UP THE IRON🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼!!!
The guitar fills during the verse make the song.
Because Frank Herbert doesn't like rock bands, particularly heavy rock bands, and especially rock bands like Iron Maiden."
Songwriter Steve Harris tried to convince Herbert that the song would be a good promo for the book, but he still refused.
Nowday To tame a land is better known than Dune 😂 He took it all up the ass I think
What an ass he was.
@@lukeflow3159 I agree with you!
Well, the song is still clearly about Dune. It just doesn't bear that title. But it's undeniably about the book.
If it wasn"t for Iron Maiden,we would never had have, the greatest genre of Metal in the whole .usic history: Atmospheric Black Metal.
Phantom of the Opera - Iron Maiden next please!
Yes, it would be great to hear a reaction to pre-Bruce era Iron Maiden. Especially this song.
Nice reaction video! I would suggest "Phantom of the Opera" as your next Iron Maiden reaction vid!
If you would be down for it, i and many more would love a whole album listening of "Seventh son of a seventh son" by Iron Maiden. But you have to keep an eye on the lyrics, too.
I would be completely down for that!
That album is packed with great songs...
Ageed. Lyrically, it's an absolute masterpiece.
Bro when you played piano over the solo i got chills.... that was insane and your ability to quickly learn a song and improvise over it is awesome!!!!
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is WONDERFULL
This whole album was perfection !!!
Great reaction, Doug. Playing with them on the fly, Very cool. Next: To Tame a Land. Epic!!!
Blind Guardian - And Then There Was Silence. A 14 minute metal song with a lot of orchestral parts. I would do more Maiden suggestions but they are already being rained down :)
The bass on this album and the Powerslave are phenomenal !
Its a great song. From a fairly underrated album. It was one the songs that turned me into a fan back in middle school.
"To Tame A Land" off of the "Piece of Mind" album released in 1983 is one of their best tracks.
Also, "Powerslave" from the album of the same name, released in 1984.
Would like to see you do Iron Maiden's Revelations
Live in Sydney version.
