In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to Infinite Dreams by Iron Maiden. This is the third tune off of Seventh Son that I've reviewed and reacted to. Great album!
Reference Video: • Iron Maiden - Infinite... - Видеоклипы
That whole Seventh Son album is a masterpiece.
IN.DEED.
Absolutely!
My favourite.
Best album of all time!
Piece Of Mind is great too.
The ending doesn't resolve, just like the question of the song is never answered. Makes sense to me.
yeah, fits the song so well.
Exactly. The resolution of this song is deliberately unconvincing in order to leave the mood hanging in mid air, but then Can I Play With Madness kicks in with a major key and it takes care of the problem. This is the issue when you listen to the tracks from a very progressive album in isolation from each other.
@@pentagrammaton6793 So TRUE. It's just 1 piece of the overall puzzle. This is why you need to listen to some albums from start to finish, so you can hear how they flow from one song, into the next. A perfect example of this is: SYMPHONY-X "V".
I think that's debatable. From the perspective of the Gm tonality, no, Em is not even a chord in this tonality, but in perspective of the main tonality of the song (Em) it is a resolution. But since we were last in Gm it definitely doesn't sound or even feel like a resolution. Which of course makes it very interesting.
Since it's a concept album, the relation to the next song is also important. This ends in an Em chord, Can I play with madness starts in G, which is the relative major from Em. If Infinite Dreams would end in Gm, the transition would definitely sound different.
Yeah, I don't think that was an accident. It was left open ended for a reason, exactly like you said the chords and words remain unresolved, it drives the point.
When's the Maiden piano cover album coming out
Yes, please!
How about a harp?

This song is amazing, can’t wait to see this weeks uploads. Powerslave next for maiden Monday
I'll second that
and the Long Beach Arena version and not the terrible Flight 666 version.
@@fkops2773 The Live after Death version is sublime.
@@fkops2773 both are great, the book of soul tour one is great too
@@fkops2773 Yes the long beach version of Power Slave
The thing is that there is no real resolution to the song. It leaves open the fact that we might be coming back to do it all over again and again again...
Exactly! This song is a part of a tale, it isn't supposed to make sense by itself.
...and agaaaaaaaaaaainnnnnnnnn!
I think you should listen to the studio version. This song has many details you would like fοr sure
Edit: right after the video i listened to the studio version and got even more convinced you should listen to it to understand the full composition and it will surprise you i'm sure
We're doing the whole Seventh Son, huh? 'The Evil That Man Do' is my favourite from this album
Love that one too.
Can I play with madness
Always liked the opening lyric on that one.
Clairvoyant!!!☝🏻😁😁😁
My favorite Maiden song
Interviewer: How many of your songs are in E minor?
Iron Maiden: Yes
That's not really a fair comment. How many of your songs are minor would be more accurate. Once analysed, many are D minor, A minor and others. Maiden have never been a detune band so, once they want to go as heavy as possible in standard tuning, E minor is the go to key...however when Adrian Smith rejoined the tracks in D minor and A minor had a lower bottom end guitar to give depth between bass and guitars. So his guitar has often been drop D with Dave and Janick above and Steve below. The nature of the genre demands these keys, to use anything else modulating at will brings your into something else...shite! It's heavy metal. Choose thine weapon!

I would‘ve preferred the studio recording for more subtle details and that recording especially makes much more sense to me than a live version (studio - getting to know the song, live - enjoying them having fun on stage and playing the songs faster). However - the chord progressions stay the same and here it‘s about those anyway.
I agree, and also, Bruce sounds tired throughout the 80's... so anything from the golden years sound better in studio or live versions from 1999 on
@@lucasgandelini9834 I think he sounds tired from 1999 on actually.
Yeah I wanted to comment the exact same comment. The Studio album is the best version with clean vocals, nice guitar sound and synths. Don’t think That the live version has synths and the Sound of the live version wasn’t that good and Bruce Has sang better (later in his Career his Voice got better, from the 2000’s he sang really good).
@@Hy-jg8ow Take a second listen my friend! From the late 90's on Bruce sang better than ever! Less touring and more studying took him to a whole new level of singing
The studio version is way better.
I wish you had chosen the studio version, it's much better from a musical point of view
Disagree, the live version has so much more energy, it’s a better performance of the content
@@jacksonbarker7594 first listens should always be studio versions, in my opinion
The studio version is one of Bruce’s best.
"When the wild wind blows" by Iron Maiden is a masterclass in story telling and evoking emotion trough melodies. Would love it if you checked it out :)
Yes please.
its one of the worst iron maiden song imo...absolutely hate it
@@Therionsylar Why ?
nope. not very interesting harmonically
@@Therionsylar I don't like that song much either. The man who would be king is a much better song imo.
My recommendation is to listen to the entire of the whole Seventh Son of a Seventh Son album. You will appreciate this song even more on the actual album. I love this live version but the mix of the studio version with the synth and everything is sven more mystical. I love this song I’m so glad you reacted to it. It’s very unique song in my opinion a lot happens in a short period of time. It’s my favorite of their songs even though it’s not one of their epics. But the first time I heard this song is in the context of the album. I think the thing with the ending chords reflects the lyrics. It doesn’t resolve like the way we don’t resolve the meaning of life and death. This concept of life and death and good v evil is very present with Iron Maiden which is why they’re one of my favorite bands.
Exactly my thoughts. Seventh son is a concept album, so the story, and musical themes you might imagine, run through the whole track listing.
It's the one maiden album where they never do the songs justice when they play them live, they lose the nuances as the songs are sped up. Definitely need to listen to the album as a whole to appreciate it fully.
@@Baldrick99 My thoughts exactly this versions speeds up and looses the "mystical groove"
Also shows the direction of the weak resolution at the end. It's intentional.
The 'resolution' of this song, also slides perfectly into Can I Play With Madness (to go with your, listen to the whole album thought😊)
How many of us were waiting for the "CAN I PLAY WITH MADNESS?" at the end there? (it's the next song on the album and always for me came in a little earlier than expected). Like I mentioned in another comment section of yours Doug, I was 16 at the time this album was released. The song Infinite Dreams, I didn't like at first listen. It was so vastly different than anything they had released before. But after several listens (hell, I wonder how many in total? A thousand??) , it's one of my favorites.
I agree with the overall sentiment that the live version is not as good as the studio version, probably a bit faster as they usually are. 7th Son album probably one of their best studio mixes.
CAN I PLAY WITH MAD NESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!
This is a song that you really start to appreciate the more and more you listen to it. Over time it has become my favorite track on the record.
God i want this guy to do a complete piano cover of all these Maiden songs he reacts to/breaks down. 5:08 "so we get".. Piano epicness
Like Sean Townsend doing piano covers of killswitch engage and As I lay dying
Sean townsends piano covers is called chillswitch engage
He probably knows some ludvicio einaldi songs too
I'm 45. I've loved Maiden for 30 years or more and I've finally concluded that Infinite Dreams is my favorite Maiden song. Musically and lyrically it's got it all. Just wish it was a part of their current live set. Thanks for this reaction! I loved your analysis.
45 here, and this is also my favourite Maiden song.
on bass guitar the song is definitely amazing to play , the speed is what makes it hard but the melody is top notch
Possibly the lack of resolution musically is suggestive of reincarnation which is a lack of resolution
S. Harris slapping that thing like no tomorrow ...Up The Irons !
Best bassist in my opinion.
@@lw3918 Steve Harris is a very good Bass Player, but Billy Sheehan, John Myung, Tony Levin and Mike LePond are much better.

@@lw3918 Yeah, like Paul Glbert. Really impressive technically wise, but their songs don't do anything for me.

I think some of the finer details in this song come through much better in the studio version vs live including Bruce’s voice. Thank you Doug for doing this. Both very educational and entertaining! How about some tracks off the Book of Souls (like the title track) or the Greater Good of God? Greetings from Hungary
Wish you'd listened to the studio version off camera afterwards, and then gave us your conclusion. So much better. Great analogy though.
Doug, the Studio version is much better than this one.
Wondering what you would think of "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner". It's a deep cut, but an interesting one.
Glad to see some love for this one. Definitely an underrated track.
The guitar leads are just *chef's kiss* on that one. It's a shame they only ever played it live once.
Adrians solo is sick on that song
Powerslave live flight 666!!!
Dear Doug: Let me use a few lines to express my deepest gratitude about what you do for us, your followers. I truly believe that music is the engine of life. As example (sorry to make it personal, but is to highlight my appreciation), I'm a physician-scientist lucky enough to have made few contributions to science, and I truly believe whatever I have done right wouldn't be possible without Beatles, Pink Floyd and Maiden. I arrive home after strenuous journeys of work here in west Texas, and find HUGE JOY in watching at your videos. As an amateur musician on my own, having the privilege of having a band (disbanded by now - wish you could have time to listen to our stuff - I know you can't), I TREMENDOUSLY APPRECIATE YOUR TEACHING!!! That makes you unique in what you do in internet. I have just a minimal understanding of theory, and the way you analyze the songs of my favorite bands (such as Maiden and Floyd) makes me understand them better... BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, you rise me the bar in terms of music theory just enough that I can (at least try to) grasp it. It's TRULY meaningful what you do... As you said in one of your earliest posts: YOU'RE A TEACHER... You do not make a trivial reaction, nor you take the theory to impossible-to-grasp levels for us... You provide us fun while teaching, as well as challenging to look for more knowledge (I think, the utopic triad in teaching!)... REALLY!!! HATS OFF FROM A DIDACTIC, PEDAGOGIC AND TEACHING PERSPECTIVE... Sorry for the lengthy words, BUT I TRULY LOVE YOUR WORK (last but not least, you're a great communicator, greatly charismatic!!!). God (whichever you believe in) bless you.
Do you have any recorded songs of your own band and if yes what's the name please
Watching Steve Harris play the bass makes me want to learn how to play the bass
Please do "The Legacy" or "The Thin Line Between Love And Hate", both by Iron Maiden
"Infinite Dreams"
Infinite dreams, I can't deny them
Infinity is hard to comprehend
I couldn't hear those screams
Even in my wildest dreams
Suffocation waking in a sweat
Scared to fall asleep again
In case the dream begins again
Someone chasing, I cannot move
Standing rigid, a nightmare's statue
What a dream, when will it end and will I transcend?
Restless sleep, the mind's in turmoil
One nightmare ends, another fertile
It's getting to me so scared to sleep
But scared to wake now, in too deep
Even though it's reached new heights
I'd rather like the restless nights
It makes me wonder, makes me think
There's more to this, I'm on the brink
It's not the fear of what's beyond
It's just that I might not respond
I have an interest, almost craving
But would I like to get too far in?
Can't be all coincidence
Too many things are evident
You tell me you're an unbeliever
Spiritualist?
Well me, I'm neither
Wouldn't you like to know the truth
Of what's out there to have the proof?
And find out just which side you're on
Where would you end?
In Heaven or in Hell?
Help me
Help me to find my true self without seeing the future
Save me
Save me from torturing myself even within my dreams
There's got to be just more to it than this
Or tell me why do we exist
I'd like to think that when I die
I'd get a chance, another time
And to return and live again
Reincarnate, play the game
Again and again and again and again
The weird resolution at the end kinda matches the lyrics, doesn't it?
It's funny, because I know that song since I was fifteen, so I don't find that weird, but it is rather different than the usual. It sounds rather like falling instead of landing. But it does sound oneiric, I think it's fitting. The lyrics say of falling asleep, being in too deep, new heigths, being on the brink and the melody ends with a portamento down on that same cadence, the chord falling face first into place.
I assume you listened to the full album in your first go? The transition to Can I play with Madness is quite fitting and it makes any weirdness go away easily.
"The Thin Line Between Love & Hate" would be another great choice!
Nope

As a singer, Bruce's diction has always been one of the most impressive aspects of his toolkit to me.
The way he can race through some of the patters and have no slurring, everything is understandable and clearly defined even when changing pitch multiple times through phrases.
Could you please do something from Bruce's solo career? Tears of the dragon, Chemical wedding and etc.? :)
Savatage "Chance" (or "Gutter Ballet") + Queensryche "Silent lucidity" (or "Eyes of a stranger")
COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🎶
thumbs up for Chance !! such an epic song
Yes!! Savatage is one of my favorites - “Chance” indeed!!💖
If he's doing Queensryche, it needs to be "Roads To Madness." Queensryche has much better songs than the "hits" off of their 2 most popular albums.
Strongly recommending some Maiden off the beaten path:
The Nomad
Lord Of Light
The Legacy
Starblind
Isle Of Avalon
When The River Runs Deep
Shadows Of The Valley
Or check out some of Bruce's fantastic solo work, some of it is featuring Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden as one of two guitar players:
Accident Of Birth

Dark Side Of Aquarius (Live - Scream For Me Brazil)
The Book Of Thel (Live - Scream For Me Brazil)
The Chemical Wedding
Trumpets Of Jericho
Tears Of The Dragon (Live - Scream For Me Brazil)
Abduction
Tyranny Of Souls
Silver Wings
Wasted Years or Caught Somewhere In Time for your next Maiden Monday!!!
Though you can defo hear the damage from over touring in this period in Bruce’s voice in this live performance the sheer power his voice had in the eighties was insane.

I can suggest The Talisman, a Great Song :D
"Isle of Avalon' from the 2010's "The Final Frontier' has all sorts of unusual timings and progressions, something a little different from the Maiden boys. I think you'd enjoy it!
The whole The Final Frontier is a goddamn work of art with many oddities. The first song itself is strange and amazing. Isle of avalon is also amazing. I also have a soft spot for Starblind. One of my favorite iron maiden songs. "Walk away from freedoms offered
By the jailors in their cage", great line.
@@NightZ2_ I agree! The Final Frontier is a fantastic album and it does not get the recognition that it deserves.

Since we're doing the whole Seventh Son (it looks like), The Clairvoyant is my suggestion
Is it me or is it shadows that are dancing on the wall?
I second this!! Besides the Prophecy - Clairvoyant is my absolute favorite:)
“ The Sesame street RIFF”!!! That’s just got the WOW!!! signal from me! GREAT ANALYSIS!
I've seen a lot of comments about it already but I want to say it too: you should have done the studio version on this. Still a great reaction though keep the songs from this album coming!
Great song, though the studio track is better. The bass part kills. I love your analysis but there's one aspect that I think is often overlooked -- feel, groove and vibe. I understand that is something that isn't usually addressed in classical training because it's less tangible and subjective. It's a folk art. But a high art nevertheless. And Iron Maiden have it. (Well, they did up until 7th Son. After that, it was never quite the same).
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is a concept album where all of the songs flow together & work as a whole. The feeling of this one being unresolved helps the next song begin. =)
Can't wait for Wasted Years to come up on Maiden Monday... one of my favorites. \m/
Thanks so much!!!!!!!!
Next one: AFRAID TO SHOOT STRANGERS
For future Maiden Mondays, try Powerslave next. Nice exotic scales, awesome instrumental section break with a great solo and it's not on E minor. You'll enjoy it Doug.
Hi Doug! @5:10 reminds me of Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You” ! 😂 😜 Keep up the good work, greets from the Netherlands! 👍🏻
Can you sth from Megadeth to complete this metal journey? Holy Wars... The Punishment Due would make a great start
I have a few comments that are not necessarily related to each other
1) I like how you play the piano to highlight the chord modulations. If you were ever interested I bet you could do some piano adaptations of some Maiden classics. Hell, I'd buy a copy. You have string quartet versions of Metallica so why not a piano version of some Maiden hits?
2) How can you listen to this live version of Infinite Dreams or any other Maiden song and NOT comment on Steve Harris' amazing percussive attack on bass? Maybe I'm biased because I'm a bass player but Harris is probably number 3 or 4 on my list of all time greats (Geddy Lee and Victor Wooten beating him out and depending on which mood I'm in, Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath)
3) Also, how can you not notice the amazing set? Iron Maiden always had great set designs especially in their heyday. When I saw them last back on the BOok of Souls tour, there set did not disappoint. IT wasn't Powerslave by any means, but impressive nonetheless.
4) I know your focus is the music and I really take a great interest in how you dissect these songs. I know you weren't impressed with how they just resolve back to Em suddenly without trying and I get that. But sometimes, it just works.
5) Also, one of the things I hoped you noticed is that whenever Iron Maiden performs, they are always having a good time on stage. Bruce and Niko playing peek-a-boo with the camera behind the drums is great. And the fans, too, are always having a great time.
Should have been the studio version for this one.
Have to agree, definitely the better version

This is my favorite song of all time. It’s the song that changed me from passive maiden listener to super fan. I’d do powerslave or afraid to shoot strangers next
Bruce is by far my favorite Maiden singer, but one of my favorite Maiden songs comes from the time before Bruce. Iron Maiden - Strange World. It's such a different sound, and yet at the same time distinctly Maiden.

Keen to get your thoughts on this song for something a little different as it was recorded with a different singer Blaze Bayley on vocals when Bruce left the band in the mid-90s! Another longer epic which has made its way into the Maiden setlist in recent years, that should tell you that Bruce has given it a tick of approval!
IMO the version from Bayley's post-Maiden band is better than any of Maiden's versions.

Sign of the Cross is a great track from the Blaze Bayley era of Iron Maiden. I would say listen to either the studio version or Rock in Rio in 2001. Most people would say Rock in Rio due to the vocalist.
Doug: do not listen to Sign of the Cross. It's a great live song but not particularly complicated or interesting musically.
@@garymitchell5899 lmfao fair point i guess
Awesome choice Doug. Love your videos. I hear music differently thanks to you!
I love when you pick up notes and chords at the piano. A note: Bruce have had a flu before its concert
First of all, I think you do your best work at the piano. It really adds a dimension. Second, at 5:00 you have B go to Bb, E to D and B stay the same. That should be G. Just so you know someone is listening to your bits of theory :).
Yeah, I agree that Doug is at his finest when he can react, illustrate his examples, and improvise his own accompaniments from the piano bench. I hope he's able to build that into a more constant feature of his videos.
I was thinking this... oh wait, I have no idea. It's just good music. But mad respect to you theory guys from us instrument hacks.
Loving this channel more and more with each Maiden or Metallica song lol. Got yourself a new subscriber. DEFINITELY do When The Wild Wind Blows or Can I Play With Madness next
That's the point. There's no resolution, no final answer, just an ongoing feeling of uncertainty: "what's next? can I try again?" and I think that really suits the album and the character.
Please, react to Opeth - Ghost of perdition Live in Red Rocks
Maiden had and has their own style, They dont use the most complicated scales that exist, but use only those which they like in the most unique way there is just only for what works best for the song just to rock the fuck out it,Thats what makes them maybe the best heavy metal band ever

The songs on the album flow into each other… it might make more sense hearing it in order with the next one.
I'd never heard the live version before, and sadly I don't think I was missing anything. The studio version is way better. The live version sounds a bit rushed, sloppy, missing nuance, and Bruce just doesn't seem to care.

OK, so after watching you do a couple of Iron Maiden reaction/breakdown vids, I am really intrigued by the possibility of you doing a Celtic Frost reaction/analysis, but one of their avant-garde numbers from their album "Into the Pandemonium"... I would like to see you hear for the first time the symphonic explorations of the two songs "Rex Irae (Requiem)" and "Oriental Masquerade", because these two are back to back in the album and should always be played together, just like "Heartbreaker/Livin' Lovin' Maid", or "Eruption/You Really Got Me".
I hope he does Starblind next. That song seems like a good fit.
Yup, very similar chorus but resolves on Gm
thats one of Janick's masrterpieces and is not in e minor by the way, Maiden sound so differente but yet cool when they play in differents key like A for example.
I always love seeing Doug at the piano for these. ❤
...and still suggest "Powerslave" for the next reaction! 🤘
You should react to the studio version as well. I'm not sure why so many people say metal is better live, I find studio versions to almost exclusively be better than the live versions. It's fun to see live for yourself, but for listening, the studio versions are preferred.
6:46 I've always thought that scream meant he wakes up from another dream. In other words, he reincarnates and starts a new life. And, he's aware of all his previous lives and can't bare the loop anymore. Lives ( dreams ) turn into nightmares.
Personally, I wish you reacted to the original recording. There's more detail to enjoy.
I think the studio version would have been better. There is a ton of nuance in the recording that doesn't come across in this version. Bruce also really struggled at this concert.
They wouldn't of released the entire concert if Bruce struggled...
@@philipwaller9477 have you listened to the concert? He's struggling. I've seen most of their live releases and this is a rough one for him.
I also think the album version would have been better. I hear so much bass slapping from Harris, it's really annoying. Dunno what they did with the recording.
Yeah he was slapping live during this period. Who the F knows why because it didn't sound like a bass at all. Album version is far superior.
The talisman or when the wild wind blows should be next. The album that they’re off of is incredibly underrated
