Personal theory: It stems back to Nicko and his current limitations with certain songs, due to the 70% comeback post-stroke. CSIT is a classic gallop like The Trooper. Just like with The Trooper, Nicko is no longer doing the fills..... so you're not getting that solid chugging along bottom-end engine presence we once did. I think they dropped the rhythm part to flow with the newer adaptation to Nicko. Otherwise, the guitars would have outpaced the bottom-end, giving a somewhat auditory imbalance to us seasoned listeners [nerds] of this gem. I was at the Newark show, and I hadn't been to a show since Book of Souls 2017, due to health issues. I immediately heard the difference in that "engine", overall, and throughout the show.... But I understand and have empathy-- The show was GREAT, and I was grateful just to be there and still have Nicko with us, doing the best he can. But I think the other guys are making adjustments to the arrangements to "blend in" his shortcomings, so they're less obvious. Less gallop in the guitars, less our ears are looking for it in the drum pacing.
As much as much he was a beast back in the day, Nicko is unfortunately brining Iron Maiden down and that was prior to suffering a stroke. I remember listening to Aces High four or five years ago on a live YT video and it was unlistenable (way too slow). I don't want to crap on him, but I think it would be better if he retires and Maiden gets a younger drummer.
@@Snake78609 I understand that your feelings are hurt, but those are facts. As I said, he was in top form when I was into Maiden (I have been listening to them since 1980), but it is not disrespect when you noticed issues.
Great video know I understand why it sounds better. Hearing this live just changed me 4ever best intro song for a concert I have ever heard topping Aces High! The moment they max the volume is exactly when they play this improved harmonics
This video is a good example of why I think Iron Maiden has one of the best guitar-trios if not the best, where they can do things like this with their live performances. They can do stuff like most bands can only do in the studio, for example , Dave and Adrian can play their usual, famous, twin attack guitar harmonies, while Janick is playing a great rhythm guitar in the back-round along with Steve's bass-line. This elevates the harmonized guitars even more, this is not as easy with only two guitarists live for example. Or they can do these better alternative live versions of great classics, like this song in the video where they can harmonize even wider, I just love it. I think 3 guitarists is the way to go with music like this live. And who better than Dave, Adrian and Janick , what a perfect combination and I am so grateful that Harris, perhaps along with others chose to keep Janick and bring Adrian back, for us to get this amazing guitar trio =)

The little details makes the big difference. And you know that because i watch youre guitar playing especially in maiden songs nobody plays their songs with so detail like yours
I love when Maiden (or any band) reworks a song a little. Another great thing about live music. With three guitars you always have to be careful about 3 leads at once…if they each have different vibrato it could sound out of tune. But I think Maiden doesn’t suffer from that. Great video and I can’t wait to see them in November!!!
@@GG5150 Certain things just work better in a studio recording than live. And even live, what works well in a small venue might not work so well in a large arena. Playing it like the album is the easiest approach, so they didn't go through the trouble of redoing the arrangement, without a good reason. This is the same kind of harmony as what you find in The Trooper or Infinite Dreams, where the lower melody is a sixth below the higher one. This wider interval harmony sounds fuller and broader than a tight harmony in thirds especially in the higher register. That's why the harmony on Master of Puppets never sounds right live.

it needs the Gallien Krueger 250ML amps they used to make the album... That has effectively been the only way to capture that tone (which I think is the best they ever had)
@@SirRobbins Agree 100%. The G&K amps they used during the SIT and SSOASS era, both in the studio and on tour, are easily the best guitar tones I have ever heard.

that would imply a different mix in guitars volume, because the higher harmony would always sound louder. another thing, they are always used the the lacking of a rhythm guitar in the harmonies leads, and an extra guitar live is just too much for the viewers attention. TBH i think live less is always more, because you pay more attention to the musicians than to the whole music... just an opinion though, from someone who's been playing live for 30 years :D
@@pedrolourenco2707 I mean, they've already done the thing with harmonies over a rhythm guitar with some of their songs. Revelations, Book of Souls, the Longest Day and The Legacy are some examples. In other examples they don't, so sometimes it works and sometimes it's better not to have the rhythm guitar.
@@torkelsvenson6411what Pedro is saying makes a lot of sense. You are correct in saying they have done it sometimes, the thing is it depends on the melody, register of the harmony, and the speed of the part - especially the rhythm. It's very easy for things to sound messy in a large arena with the sound bouncing all over the place. 😬
Interesting arrangement for sure. Can't help but feel curious how it would work if Janick played the rhythm parts while Dave and Adrian play the original harmonies, or an octave lower as Adrian does now.
I never understood why they recorded 3 guitars and don't play it live like it was recorded now that they have 3 guitar players on stage. It would be so cool.
This was a great breakdown of relatively small yet significant changes that they made. It got me thinking what other things they have changed over the years and how other songs have evolved while being played live. Now that I come to think about it ... that would make a great multi-part episode of Licks of the Beast, wouldn't it? 😉
Nico, I really want a breakdown of the song "Brave New World". Especially the intro that Dave is playing which I think is so awesome. But I have, as we speak, seen like 15 different ways to play it in different tabs and so on, and none of them sounds "right". Can you please do a breakdown of how to play this song the right way, I have seen you do some of the solos if not all from this song, but none of the tabs I have seen for that Dave intro is sounding right. Some of them show that you are supposed to play with a lot of open notes on some of the strings and so on , I can not really figure it out. Such a nice melody in that song though =)
they are changing it likely because of how bad it sounded in 86. We ran into Rod Smallwood in a bar after the 2nd show of Maiden England in Atlanta in 2012 and asked him about the set and other songs including CSIT. He said it sounded like shit live and we were likely to never hear it again. He was likely referring to those melodies before the verses. Also, it's hard to get any SIT song to sound good without those GK250ML amps they used to record it. Phenomenal little amps they are. Cheers.
@@gulanhem9495 I would disagree with that a bit. Rock in Rio, IMO is the best live album they've done. I know classics fans go to Live After Death but RIR is the one for me. I have seen them almost every tour starting with Brave New World and they do a solid job live with their newer tracks. Book of Souls tour was awesome and Powerslave tracks do work very well live. Somewhere in Time had the same issues Def Leppard's Hysteria did. Overproduced in the studio where the live arena could never capture that sound. Ironically, both bands used the same amps on those albums.
As a long time fan, i'm really disapointed about the lack of those harmonized parts in Maiden new albums since No Prayer... I understand the evolution of the band but let's face it, those duets were the soul of the band's greatest albums and songs... Good job on your videos and guitar skills, i'm subbing to your chan with pleasure :)
you still have plenty of harmonized parts in the albums after No Prayer: Rainmaker, Beave New World, Different Workd, they all have duet guitar harmonies
A great analysis Nico. I thought something sounded different at the gig last year, but just put it down to being three guitarists nowadays. Great video and great playing as usual.
I really like it when bands change up their songs to keep things fresh and interesting. For the band as well as the fans. And especially when the band is able to take that song up a level doing it different from the album. Thinking of a way "to improve" the song, and hopefully not screw it up by going too crazy out into left field with the new arrangement. In fact, when you have the original song at home you've lstened to hundreds of times, it feels like you get your money's worth when a band expands their music live for something different.
Considering Nicko isn't playing the drum parts like he did on the recording and that Bruce allows himself to move a lot of his notes as well, I guess the harmonies on the guitar can move a little as well.
@@mksundstrom I explained it briefly at around 3:55 of this video... But to expand on that just a bit: Having a third guitar doubling the bass with a fast gallop with power chords underneath the other two playing a harmonized line in the higher register could sound a bit messy and thin in an arena setting. Some things work on an album thanks in part to the way the track is mixed and mastered, and that doesn't always translate live. Same reason why on the Powerslave tour, they dropped the harmonized melody in Revelations and opted to have both Dave and Adrian playing the rhythm part only. I see so many comments about this, and it seems that people tend to forget that these guys are professionals who have been playing giant world tours their entire lives. Tours of that size require rigorous preparations and rehearsals and nothing is half-assed or left to chance. They're very well aware that the album version is an option and it's probably the default arrangement they tried during rehearsals. If they're not playing it that way, there is always a good reason. 🙂
I think I would have preferred it if Adrian and Dave played their melodies like they did on Somewhere in Time and just have Janick play the rhythm guitar part. The new arrangement they're playing live doesn't sound bad necessarily but like another person said down in the comments, it does sound a bit sluggish and less energetic compared to the album version. Good video this though, I knew something was different about the way they've been playing this track live but I couldn't put my finger on why until now! 😂
@@jimknight9206 Yeah I was gonna mention that but I thought it would be a trifle unfair because you can't really help either of those things. Although I agree both of those things certainly don't help!
It's a pretty cool arrangement. I would love to hear it with a clean reverb/echo tone. I have a hunch that this intro would sound a lot like something The Shadows would play.
Just saw them 2 days ago and I have to say all the small changes they've made to the songs to accommodate 3 guitars + Nicko's health issues have really made their songs sound heavier than they've ever sounded. I was pleasantly surprised.
Saw them at Dickies Arena at Fort Worth and yes there were some slowdowns and a few harder drum parts missing but who cares, I'd 100% rather have Nicko with a few difficult fills missing, than some random guy playing the record version exactly. Nicko did great. The whole band sounded pretty damn good honestly, a few mistakes and it took a couple songs for Bruce to get warmed up but then it was awesome. I'm glad also it was the '84 and up "original" group of guys + Janik, it was awesome to see the guys that wrote and recorded my favorite albums through Jr High and High School. Was a great experience.

I love how they're able to be so alchemical with their guitar parts, so much so that they can alter it for the live experience.
Another absolutely excellent vid, mate.
I'll enjoy it anyhow they arrange/voice it! 🤘🤘
I second this! Is it an open D or 5 on the A as the first note 🤔
I'm actually going to be explaining riffs like that on my Patreon. 😊
@@LicksOfTheBeast also: Rainmaker? Feel like that’s an incredibly underrated song, riff and solo by Dave!
I’m just stoked to be able to see my favorite album live and my 2 fav maiden songs caught somewhere in time and stranger in a strangeland❤
A 2 guitar harmony is plenty enough. I would love to hear the rhythm guitar too. Can be done with 3 guitarist in the band now..
The album version is untouchable
That galloping rythm guitar is the shiz that's Maiden
Any Maiden is great Maiden! 😁
I saw them last week and I did notice something was different in a good way. Thanks for pinning it down!
they are changing it likely because of how bad it sounded in 86. Cheers.
Yep, I have always hated the way Wasted Years sounds live. It loses its magic without those. Especially that opening alternate-picking riff.
@@Maidenrules29
Honestly, Maiden were never very good live.
@@Maidenrules29 Adrian also plays it somewhat slower on the intro for some reason.
Great vid as always my friend! I'd be curious to compare this to how they played it live in 1986-87.
@@jasondesjardins7371 I actually just posted a comparison on my newly launched Patreon - forgive the shameless plug 🙏😂
I like the three part harmony with Steve carrying the rhythm on his own.
Very nice.
can i play the guitar? no, but do I love watching this? yes lol
A great analysis Nico.
I thought something sounded different at the gig last year, but just put it down to being three guitarists nowadays.
Great video and great playing as usual.
Man, even if they play it backwards, WE the fans will love. up the irons!!!
I could listen to the original iconic harmony forever, over and over, still fresh, never gets old... my favorite of all time...
You really get to hear the Harris gallop more. Not gonna say I prefer one over the other, because they both are KILLER.
I see what you did there
I really like it when bands change up their songs to keep things fresh and interesting. For the band as well as the fans. And especially when the band is able to take that song up a level doing it different from the album. Thinking of a way "to improve" the song, and hopefully not screw it up by going too crazy out into left field with the new arrangement. In fact, when you have the original song at home you've lstened to hundreds of times, it feels like you get your money's worth when a band expands their music live for something different.
sounds good to me
anything that brings fresh light to an already cool song is fine by me... that whole album is underrated, btw
Considering Nicko isn't playing the drum parts like he did on the recording and that Bruce allows himself to move a lot of his notes as well, I guess the harmonies on the guitar can move a little as well.
That tone 😭
Having 3 guitarists now, it means they could actually play it like on the album: 2 leads, 1 rhythm. So why don't they?
@@mksundstrom I explained it briefly at around 3:55 of this video... But to expand on that just a bit:
Having a third guitar doubling the bass with a fast gallop with power chords underneath the other two playing a harmonized line in the higher register could sound a bit messy and thin in an arena setting.
@@LicksOfTheBeastthanks for clarifying. You managed to break it down more in this comment than in that moment of the video. Much appreciated.❤
I agree, but isn't it crazy that since this "now" 25 years have passed?
while it does sound fuller i still prefer the original
I do miss the rhythm part but I've seen it live and you're absolutely right. Sounds fuller. 🤘
Love Adrian’s solo in that song.
I dont mind how they do it live, but the one on the record sounds the best
Agree 100 percent. Mind was blown in Tacoma Oct 16th!
@brianbriggs9939 I wish I could go again!
@@OsirisJenkins Me too, I keep thinking about it every day.
Thanks for that- I am going to see them on Oct 4th in San Diego- can't wait!
i'll be at the same show, cheers!
The new arrangement sounds absolutely amazing and way better than Paris 86. The boys know what they are doing and I love it! Great video and playing Nico! UP THE IRONS 🤘
I honestly think it sounds beautiful.
That's a great underrated album and song.
Hardly underrated as many older Maiden fans consider Somewhere In Time their best album..
I like the original better, but what they are doing nowadays is good.
Janick plays his guitar? Interesting.
It’s not unusual for bands to play their music different live. Iron Maiden is still playing well and sounding great.
Dang. I wish I would have seen this before the concert. 😀
