I see a number of people saying they don't like MV because of the art style of the default graphics. That's like saying you don't like a car because of the air freshener in it. Just replace it and move on. There is a huge community providing all kinds and styles of graphics and sprites to suit any need you have, and you can always just make your own. The company that makes the program even has a $10 package sold for it that gives you HD versions of the graphics from RPG Maker 2000.

    2k/3 - Old but gold.
XP - Black sheep, but impressive for its time.
VX - BWA HA HA HA HA!... no.
VX Ace - Talk about taking nothing and making it something. Best one, IMO. It can't do everything MV can, but is a lot more snappier with inputs.
MV - Still great, but the move to Javascript was two steps forward and one step back. The engine is literally a web browser, which can cause a lot of delays when displaying resources and lags on weaker hardware.

    • @SeraphCircle
      @SeraphCircle 5 лет назад +11

That lag gave me a frothing hatred for years of MV. Archeia told me it's because my video card is old(it's an on-board video card from 2012), which it indeed is very, despite the rest of my pc being relatively potent. So I'll be getting a new (weak) video card and giving it a shot. Hoping it works :)

At some point my MV wouldn't let me play test games, I'd get a ".html" error upon opening trying to test it, I could and, did open it in chrome and, stuff and, it worked but, is an unnecessary step... then, it broke completely, haha.

2K3 - beautiful and nostalgic graphical style, powerful eventing system. A lot of the classic RPG Maker games were made with as well and many still swear by it, I’ve never used it extensively myself but I feel like it must’ve done something really right to garner such dedication. It’s kinda like the Smash Bros Melee of the RM community lol.
XP - was great to use as a kid, the simplicity of it made it very useful for learning. Mapping system was great, and the tall sprites are easily the best looking of the series. Also has my favorite RPGM game (Master of the Wind)
VX Ace - my favorite and the one I still use. It combines great visuals with technical power to give the full package. Massive amount of resources and scripts available to suit your every need.
MV - in many ways feels like a modernized Ace, but I think it looks ugly and it runs a lot worse than the others (I have a gaming PC so I don’t really feel it, but I definitely noticed when I tested it on my laptop, and I figure a lot of people playing RPGM games don’t have great systems, so it’s a concern). Despite that I’d say it’s by far the most beginner friendly, especially with the added ease of plugins over scripts, so I’d recommend it to newbies.
MZ - basically MV 1.5 HD Remix. Better (and far more complex) animations, integrated ATB system, and map layers brought back. That’s pretty much it. Not worth the price tag in my opinion, but at least most of your MV assets will carry forward.

they need to make an rpg maker than allows somewhat 3d environments like in pokemon for 3ds. i know its not all REALLY 3d, but if it allowed for 3d-ish assets, that'd be great! oh and 8 directional movement as an option without a script and options for other rpg types. action rpg mode needs to be available as an option by default for example, but in reality you have to implement a load of scripts and changes to the fundamentals of the engine before you can get it working like that. would save a TON of time if they just did that for us. id even pay extra for them.

I try to make games here and there using MV and Ara Fell is such an inspiration, mainly because it was made in RPG Maker 2003 (which is undoubtedly harder to work with because it doesn't have the "crutches" that MV does, to my knowledge.) 2K3 has the wonderful animated battle sprites, it makes me want to use it. It also has types of items taken out of XP, such as skill scrolls. It also can show avatars in text boxes, which was also taken out of XP. Those are the three advantages, but mostly it's the battle system. 2K3 has many disadvantages, one of which it's hard to use. Other disadvantages is not being able to change color of characters, and no weather or colored lighting either.

@@SylkaChan I've used both MV and VX. I only prefer MV because of two things:
      1.) It's JavaScript.
2.) The damage formulas are more customizable, and I can put in more "complicated" equations that I could in VX
Aside from that, I can't really fight my claim any further other than that MV has a built in Side View Battler.

As someone who mucked about with the first RPG maker in High School (a looooong time ago) I decided out of nostalgia sake to research if RPG Mucker is still around. I was extremely excited to see the MV version. Especially since I've become a Javascript developer since then. (The Ruby coding had scared me as a kid.) I want to thank you so much for this video which is helping me decide which one to get. Now, I'm NOT a designer and it always sucked using RTP graphics - I felt like I was just copying everything else that existed out there, and I think that's what prevented me from finishing my games (the largest I had put over two hundred hours into). But MV seems so customizable that I could achieve a unique-feel using their RTP set. I just might have to pick this up and finally create the game of my dreams :-) Thanks for the video, it was awesome.

I REALLY wish they didn't keep increasing the tile size though. When I use VX Ace, I can't just plop down a 16x16 tile wholecloth. I have to bring it's three sibling tiles along with it, or in the case of MV, it's three siblings, mom and dad, grandma and grandpa, and the creepy uncle. The average person wouldn't think twice about this, but whenever I see a tile in my tilesheet being used two or more times I can't help but think "I sure wish I could just use the first tile and have the empty space be used for something else instead."

There are many common RPG game elements or core features not available yet unless you know javascript or use 3rd party plugins, such as a quest log system, manual upgrade options, more unique gear and character abilities (set bonuses, passives, gaining stacks ect), assist in specifying damage formulas, a fully customizable UI and menu navigation with clickable/tappable elements, a built in map feature if you dont wanna use an overworld style of traveling, an achievment system and others.

Switching to Java Script is actually limiting the potential of the overall software. Would have been better to go with C# or C++.
Plus, in truth the RPG Maker series has never been a TRUE RPG game development tool. The RPG genre contains three basic types: turn based (every RM to date), Tactics, & Action. Now yes you can script such stuff in RMXP and up, but that goes against the basic concept "make Any RPG". Furthermore, the RPG Maker series is always out dated by BASIC features found in many RPG games (and not just modern RPGs, but basic stuff from the NES & SNES era).

I just bought MV. I figured well it's the newest so, it must be the best. I'm a total noob so i'm watching tons of tutorials now and right away I realize something. I don't like any of the included resources. Just don't like the look of any of it. So, I've learned that what I want is the same look as the good ol' super nes days. Looks like I'll need to search for and download all those types of resources now...

RPG Maker 2k3 by default limits graphics to 16-bit (likely due to how old it is), and its eventing system is pretty powerful but might be confusing to get used to properly. If you want to go for the SNES look, RPG maker 2003 would be the easiest way --BUT-- MV would be the best way since its far more developed and much less limited

The thing that I don't like about MV is that it uses JavaScript... This means that the games you create with it are very much like web browsers, which I'm not a fan of. I do realize that this method is what makes the games multiplatform (Win, Mac, Linux), but I would still much rather have my game be a native application instead. I also think that native support makes the games easier to run on older systems, which I do value with these sort of retro-style games.
I think VX Ace will probably be my next RPG Maker if the price ever comes down a notch. There's also a project called MKXP which makes it possible to run RPG Maker XP - VX Ace games on Linux and Mac.
Until then I'm working with good old RPG Maker 2003. The event-scripting in RPG Maker 2003 is pretty wonky, but it gets the job done until I can get my hands on Ruby in VX Ace.

  • @michaelgoodman8849

2003 - I didn't used it very much, I was too late for that, but for sure, the best horror games to this day were made in 2003, also great amout of well done games, you know, with passion and not "make another game because."
XP is most nostalgic, I had ton of fun with it, 3-layer system was great and easy. You could easily made basic rpg games with it.
VX and Ace - Eh... For me it's like waste of money, I did nothing in them, I could not manage to finish any project, everytime because of something
MV - I'm using it for month now, so I still can say anything for sure, but my god, plugins are amazing, you can do so much with your game that you never could. There are many things, that they could easily change for better, unnecessary limitations, bad designs... But you can overcome 99% of that with plugins. So for now it's the best RPG Maker for me.

      I know how you feel.
I have the same problem as you.
Unfortunately, there aren't that many tutorials for the Xp.
Because so many of course use MV. To be honest, I'm tempted to get it.
But I prefer the graphics from Xp.
I know very well that you put the graphics from Xp in MV.
But I think that is not welcomed.
And if I were ever that good at pixel art, they would be very similar to this graphic anyway.
      (sigh)
I am completely ready to learn, no problem.
I love to learn new things.
And then some could come and say that I stole them.
Therefore, if I ever get a game ready, only my friends or I are allowed to play it, and it will not be sold or published.
Unless I jump into the deep end and try it anyway.
I'm just glad that I understand English well and not only rely on tutorials in German.
I just can't write properly in English.
But as I didn't know anything about RPG Maker, the German RUclipsr DonF204 helped me very well and I still like to stop by him.
But I'm still looking for those who do good tutorials whether German or English doesn't matter.
So for me it's just a hobby and I would be happy if I could create a complex and beautiful game.
      Sorry I hope I didn't write too much :)
      Greetings from Germany :)

@@sarahangel3481 My sentiments exactly. In short, the real issue is that XP tutorials, videos, and guides are either outdated or replaced by those made in MV.
Although I've dabbled in fun little projects, I really wanna try and make something special in an RPG Maker engine. I'm tempted to buy MV, but with my reluctance to spend money during tight times, I fear I wouldn't get the most out of my purchase, at least not for a while :/

I get made fun of for using VX (regular, not Ace) in 2024. And yes, i get it, the newer engines are technically more powerful. But as I've said before and I'll say again, the limitations of an engine are not the limitations of a developer. You can pretty much make any kind of game work with pretty much any engine, it's just about how much work you're willing to do.

Hello! Please tell me, is it possible to convert a project from RPG Maker 2000 to the new makers MV or MZ? I read on the Internet that the graphics will need to be scaled, but what about the scripts and all the events? Thank you.

    • @TeamUnpro
      @TeamUnpro  7 месяцев назад +1

It'd require a very complicated tool, unless we have an AI do all of the conversion, a complete transfer isn't quite possible, but you can get very close.
The events are stored in the map file which uses a format called LcfMapUnit
In theory, I could write a tool for this kind of thing but it'd take a substantial amount of time and I'm p sure I'd get burnt out lol
Though... the patterns for matching various forms of event calls is relatively simple~
The show text command for example:
      0x27, 0x51, 0x4A, 0x01, 0x01, 0x01, 0x06, 0x45, 0x56, 0x30, 0x30, 0x30,
      0x31, 0x02, 0x01, 0x02, 0x03, 0x01, 0x05, 0x05, 0x37, 0x01, 0x01, 0x02,
      0x07, 0x01, 0x01, 0x00, 0x07, 0x01, 0x01, 0x00, 0x17, 0x01, 0x02, 0x19,
      0x01, 0x00, 0x1F, 0x01, 0x00, 0x21, 0x01, 0x00, 0x22, 0x01, 0x00, 0x23,
      0x01, 0x00, 0x24, 0x01, 0x00, 0x29, 0x03, 0x0C, 0x00, 0x00, 0x33, 0x01,
      0x0C, 0x34, 0x0C, 0xCE, 0x7E, 0x00, 0x03, 0x59, 0x65, 0x73, 0x00, 0x00,
      0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x5A, 0x01, 0x04, 0x00
Using this, one could use a node.js script and some regex to grab the data here and do all the converty stuff.

My first rpg maker engine was VX Ace, after that I decided to try out XP, finally the latest version of rpg maker I have now is MV. My favorite would have to be VX Ace because it was my first one, I only bought XP for the extra tilesets and assets to my game. Rpg maker MV was the biggest improvement for me, even though I think the character graphics still suck, I like the hidden third layer but sometimes you can’t tell and accidentally over clips something on accident.
