    My honest opinion: if you are a user of the RPG Maker software; yes you should buy it. The crisp organized clarity of MZ verses older versions is like a breath of fresh air. It doesn't come with as many doodads in the RTP, but as someone who always imported tile sets and other materials that doesn't bother me much. Well worth it to me.

      I love the layers and the map maker separation. The quest systems work well and you can do so much with it. Also you can just make and insert your own character designs as long as you stay within the pixel borders easily.
      The base designs of the world are boring, but finding better ones online is easy enough - plus mv stuff works, too.

    I have both the MV and the MZ. There is almost no difference between the two. But MV has a more extensive plugin library. And you can almost find creators that offer free full licenses. You can find two or three plugins for what you're looking for. (I'm talking for those who don't want to pay a lot of money) The most important thing I felt missing when working in MV is MZ's interface.

    There's actually a perfectly good reason for the touch screen accessible interface, there's actually a 3rd party app for Android called Joiplay and that lets you play about 70% of RPG maker games according to their patreon page.
    (Could be more than that now as they didn't update the description to include MV or MZ despite them both being compatible)
    My personal theory is that the devs found out about it and rather than shutting it down which would've most likely cause a ton of controversy they instead decided to make the games easier to play on mobile.

But I put WAY to many hours into RPG Maker as it s. all the quality of life features added to MZ are amazing. So heres how I see it, If your on the fence, don't do it. Because if you do buy it, those features will make MV hard to use after you've used MZ. Even the fact that you can go to plugin command and change parameters through drop boxes. Would definitely be hard to go back from. Imo of course. Don't take what I say as a reason to get , just me.

    Both being on sale at this moment with MV at $11.99 & MZ at $41.83 has really made me question what would be better in the long run. While MZ has some objectively better quality of life stuff, forgoing some of that for a more comfortable price MV is providing is honestly way more tempting. The $30ish dollar difference just to get some nicer changes just isn't too appealing.

    If they totally revamped it they would upset large portions of their customer base. Or worse yet, confuse them. It's better for them to make small incremental changes so that nobody gets lost version to version, and putting out more versions isn't terrible. These people have been selling the same product for 20 years and they should make money it's a fun product. Take it from someone who writes code in more conventional methods. Big fast changes sometimes happen in programming platforms. I feel RPGMaker users should appreciate their refusal to make it complicated. And look at that! I'm the 100th comment! Yeah!

    • @ValentinoNicko
      @ValentinoNicko 4 года назад +1

      @RyuBlade yep. Mine is third world countries, so its common practice in steam to give lower price (because our currency is very weak compared to USD). After I recalculate, it's lower than that actually
      MV is around $31-$32
      MZ is around $22-$23
      it's common to have lower price but rarely as big as MZ does in it's release day (it goes lower than MV base price)
      MZ actually really solid, because most "Not Recommended" review in steam is about price to performance ratio, not the whole apps instead

      Really all of the RPGMaker engines are still viable, but yes picking up MZ if you have nothing else would be a fine choice. It's getting a lot of support right now and is overall a stronger engine than MV. A lot of it comes down to personal preference though. MZ can run a lot more on the screen without crashing and has QOL improvements, but if you're doing a small, easy project, don't like the MZ RTP, or simply want to save on money, I'd go with another version.

    Years later they're both still $80. I'm pleased enough with MZ at the $65 I paid for my copy without any of the bundles. I play with RPG Maker more as a hobby, and have never actually finished anything with any of the 7 RPG Makers I own (I collect them, mostly because of nostalgia for the Don Miguel days). I've made a decision to make a small game in MZ, using as close to 0 plugins as possible, just using what the base engine can do, and make something simple (though I'm cheating a bit and using a front view battle for some of those sweet MV assets I got back in the day). I must say though that there are some really neat singular parts of the RTP like the new wolfman and humanoid kitsune monsters. And I know I'm probably just tone deaf but some of the RTP songs are pretty nice, i really like the new "Battle 3" for instance.
    Is it worth 80? I'm with you there, I don't think it is, but 20% off was a decent discount and I'm ok with having paid that for MZ.

    Honestly, I've always wanted to make a game from rpg maker. I went with starting with the Lite version about 7 years ago to try. However, after seeing the ones out there already and how a lot of people see more flaws than I can just makes me paranoid to make anything and I end up just not pursuing that 'goal'/interest. That along with how easily overwhelmed I get just feels extra unmotivating, so I gave it up. Looking at my first demo/experiment project is very difficult and I feel sick to my stomach knowing how embarrassing it'd be if I shared it and people months and years later played and reacted to it. I was so proud of it too, since I've never done anything like it, and I've went as to edit some sprites and make some character assets. Overall I’d definitely recommend this engine over MV if you don’t already have MV. That said, a lot of it comes down to preference. I’m pretty sure MV goes on heavier sales, and I personally think the art it comes packaged with looks nicer. MZ itself is a stronger engine, but the other aspects are still something to consider.

    • @Toastyfunnyguy
      @Toastyfunnyguy  3 года назад

      You shouldn't need the engine to play any games made in it, although I'm not sure how it works for the console versions and for some games you may need to install the RTP of the engine the game was made on (which is free).

      @@lrackirkwood7598 Most of the ones sold on Steam, or on any big distribution site work without the RTP. If you go to the RPG Maker forums or itch.io you might find some that do require RTP, but they will usually tell you. All the popular RPG Maker games (To The Moon, Ao Oni, The Witches House, Ib, Oneshot, Omori, etc) are pretty self explanatory to install, just search around the web for a bit.

The next RPG maker will be an evolution then, while the next version after that will be just some DLC add-ons to the original while charging full price for the software? Yeah, it seems they are following what other companies are doing with games. XD

    Thank you.

    • @Toastyfunnyguy
      @Toastyfunnyguy  4 года назад

      In the deployment tab I actually don’t see the option to deploy to ios/Android like there is in MV, which is strange. I’m certain I saw somewhere that they said you could export to APK and they’ve also made a ton of optimization for touchscreens so there’s got to be a way to deploy to mobile 🤔 I unfortunately have never deployed to mobile so I can’t answer any further than this, but I’d recommend you download the free trial of mz and see if you can get it to work.

    Degika/ Kadokawa keep fooling their customers. The only rpg maker worth buying is the one that easily deploys games into android/ios as advertised on MV back in the day. Until then, rpg maker is all about developing pc only games to be played for developer/players instead of players only.

    • @Toastyfunnyguy

      And MZ can run things a lot better. For example, if you wanna run 800 trillion parallel events and animations all in the same screen, MZ can handle it at 60fps where MV crashes if u do too too much. That’s basically the biggest selling point for MZ, the performance changes. But, for the causal dev who’s not making a crazy graphically intensive game, it’s not a necessary upgrade IMO, especially if u already have MV.

      It really comes down to what you're wanting to do with the engine. MV still has a lot more plugins and can do a lot (see my video on the game published by the developers of rpgmaker made using MV) but MZ is capable of running more on screen at once without crashing, it's a generally stronger engine. It's mostly preference, like if you prefer the MV or MZ rtp, if you really need a stronger engine, or if the QOL improvements matter that much to you. I'd check out SRDudes "Every change made to RPGMaker MZ" and decide from there how much it matters to you.
