I'm still confused why they wouldn't keep some production of clones tho. Since you can't get more loyal than the clone chips and even without them they already come brainwashed ready from whatever else the kaminoans put in their heads. And then you have an actual part of the army that can fight and win battles rather than be a 5 year old trying to hit a pinata at the party and missing everytime.
I dunno, having both battalions of just recruits and just clones seems like that would work better than one over the other. Then maybe a few experimental mixed battalions to see if integration could affect overall efficiency. Have the natborns do the standing and guarding that established the empires presence and the clones do more actual fighting in areas that gave the empire trouble.

@homer 2137 it isn't. Birth programming brainwashes the people into believing their sole purpose is to serve the Republic. There's nothing else in life but the Republic you fight for
Propaganda can only brainwash you to a certain extent. If you experience vile acts that come down from your organization, you start to feel guilty and sympathize with the victims of those atrocities. What if they were your family, your friends? Then you might become rebellious and actively disobey orders, or just defect.
Take the example of Iden Versio, a die hard imperial who learned what the Empire was really like and defected, compared to crosshair, who was only breed for combat by the Republic and didn't have any outside experience or any sympathy for civilians. If the empire tells him to kill everyone, he wouldn't discriminate.

      Interesting....
An idea I've been playing with is, what if inhibitor chips didn't exactly take over a clone, but rather pushed them to obey despite their desire to disobey. It would heighten the arguments that would justify war crimes, ease their cognitive dissonance, and suppress any rebellious tendencies.
It inhibits them from thinking clearly and freely!
I like it since it kinda blends the broader legends with TCW & modern canon, allowing room for both kinds of moral questions the two continuities posed.
Then comes Wrecker, more or less wrecking that theory.... ah well.

It's also a method of exerting control, and knowing the Empire that was the underlying purpose. It creates obedience in a population, which is far more valuable than loyalty is to an oppressive regime.

    1. It’s pretty disgraceful to see humans wearing the armor of brave heroic soldiers who fought and died fighting for the Republic. They don’t see serve to wear the armor. Heck, if I got the armor I’d feel ashamed to wear it since I didn’t earn the right to wear the armor of brave heroic soldiers.
    2. Clones are way superior to regular humans. So it’s pretty egregious and insulting that the mighty Empire will not use better qualified soldiers soldiers.
    3. Stormtroopers can’t aim and they are pretty incompetent.
It really makes me wonder if the Rebel Alliance would have lost if the Empire continued to use Clone Troopers. Clones were truly the best of the best.

@@xavierterrelong9385 relatively speaking, yes. The films do indicate a level of proficiency above that of a typical modern soldier. However, they are also demonstrated to lack the resolve of clone troops, being more prone to defection and disloyalty than the Clones. Many of the Rebellion's best soldiers defected from the Imperial Military. Biggs Darklighter from the Imperial Navy Starfighter Corps, Jan Dodonna of the Imperial Navy, Crix Madine from Imperial Special Forces, Han Solo from the Imperial Army, Alexsander Kallus from the Imperial Security Bureau, and others. These were the most high profile accounts and we know of many others. Far more than were known to have defected from the Clone Army.

@@ibrahimmekonnen8259 The thing is that the Kaminoans likely produced a substantial number of clone troops. Canon numbers claim approximately 1.2 million available at the start of the Clone War with millions more in various stages of development, as well as 5 million more ordered during the war. We also know that military campaigns shown the Clone Wars TV show make very little sense if taken at face value, since they suggest entire planets of hundreds of millions to billions of people can be conquered and occupied by about a dozen divisions, something that is demonstrably false if we examine the real world. A study by the Rand Corporation as well as an examination of occupation forces throughout recent history shows that there needs to be approximately 1 soldier for every 50 inhabitants to secure a relatively peaceful occupied region. When an active insurgency is likely, such as can be seen on separatist worlds, the necessary number of troops can be much higher. Since we know that the Clone Army was supposed to be the main Republic fighting force and that it was supposed to be able to fight the droid army to a relative stalemate, we can infer that it was likely several hundred million troopers strong.
It should be noted that the canon numbers come from interpreting Lama Su's statement to Obi-wan in Attack of the Clones, where he says, "200,000 units are ready, with a million more well on the way." The term "Unit" is vague because it can mean many things. It could mean a single Clone, it could mean a Unit in the military sense, putting its size somewhere between 80 and 3,000 men (unit in military parlance is any independent command with a specific type function, applied to Companies, Battalions, and Regiments. Smaller groupings are subunits, which can also apply to non-independent companies, and larger groupings are formations), or it could mean something else. Based on what we see in the shows, films, and books, which is that clones die or are severely wounded at a rapid rate, we can safely assume that unit cannot mean a single clone, since an army of 1.2 million at the start of the Clone Wars would be rendered combat ineffective by the end of the first year. That first year saw several major battles and campaigns, which saw heavy losses to Republic forces and would almost certainly have whittled the force down to almost nothing.
As such, it can be safely assumed that a unit is something larger than one clone. The interpretation I personally prefer is that a unit is equal to a battalion. We see in Attack of the Clones that the clone troops board the transport ships in blocks of about 624 troops. This fits with canonical unit scaling, since a Clone Battalion is canonically 576 effectives (riflemen who actually kill things), putting the Battalion Headquarters at 48 men. This would put the clone army at the start of the war closer to 748.8 million, with the 200,000 units available at the start of the war totaling some 124.8 million men. This is much more believable as an army intented for a galaxy spanning conflict and is justifiable since Tipoca City isn't the only city on Kamino. It's just the capital of a world with 1 billion inhabitants.
So, with 748.8 million troopers either ready or nearly ready at the start of the war, it is also stated that the GAR was a total of 3.2 million units (as stated in Star Wars: Complete Locations), which brings the total up to 1.9968 billion men. The Senate then orders 5 million more units (TCW Pursuite of Peace, TCW Senate Murders), which translates to 3.12 billion troopers. This order isn't placed until 21 BBY, however, meaning those troopers would not be ready until 11 BBY. As such, the force available for the war is whatever troops were already grown or almost ready on Kamino, which is just short of 2 billion clones.
As such, we can see that the Clone Army has a substantial force of troops. If we assume a casualty rate of 30% over the course of the war, approximately 599,040,000 clones would be killed or wounded during the war. This amounts to 542,608 per day during the 1,104 day long conflict (using the Galactic Standard Calendar year length of 368 days). According to Legends content, the First Battle of Geonosis occured on the 21st day of the 5th Month of the year 22 BBY (at the time 13 After ReSynch). It ended on the 23rd day of the 5th month of the year 19 BBY, 3 years and 2 days later. This reduces the total casualty rate per day to 541,627.
This means that, after the Jedi Purge and the Declaration of the New Order, there were approximately 1,397,760,000 clone troopers fit for duty, roughly 2.2 million battalions, assuming none of the wounded clones returned to duty. Combined with the potential addition of 3.12 billion additional troopers by 11 BBY and the possibility of more troopers being already in the training process during the war allowing for a possible increase in strength each year, we have solid core of dependable soldiers, absolutely loyal to the Empire. They would also be able to provide sufficient forces to man all stormtrooper legions assigned to Imperial Star Destroyers (25,000 in canon and legends) 5.76 times over. As such, I find it very plausible that the Clone Army at the end of the Clone Wars could be large enough to serve as the Stormtrooper Corps while supplemented by volunteers and conscripts serving in the Imperial Army and Imperial Navy. To increase genetic diversity, particularly promising recruits and possibly some non-clone veterans of the Clone Wars could be used as new genetic donors for a new generation of clone troops. This could allow the Empire to garrison important sites, such as Scarif, Jedda, Endor, and the Death Stars, with more politically reliable clone troops rather than relying on the fickle loyalties of natural born recruits.

    • @wow-oq6jc

Nicholas Walsh That would’ve meant the clones cost around over 1 trillion credits, which is around 19 years before the Galactic Empire had the finances for the Death Star. Yes, it is indeed true that the clones seem so small in numbers, because it’s a galaxy filled with planets that have billions of people. Usually however, the clones garrisoned in large cities of a planet, so that’s why taking planets like Felucia rested the entire clone war duration because it was so a planet that there was nothing for there to garrison. There also were insurgents, but not so much against the Republic. The clones would’ve only been needed to divide on high priority planets to maintain order. It is one of the reasons separatists were able to hold planets for a long time because they had so much droids to occupy and control

I always felt that while the Empire could have recruited huge numbers of storm troopers as well as regular soldiers for the various military branches. They REALLY should have maintained a large number of clone troopers. First have clone commando as a sort of special forces unit, with clone commandos and commanders also training non-clone troops, and finally a large formation lead by clone commanders, with a significant percentage of the rank and file consisting of clone troopers, but using battle droids, such as droidikas, various spider droids, etc…, as their heavy weapons and fire support units. They could even include close air support units, equipped with droid gunships. Integrated with the units themselves, and even tri-fighter droids, vulture and Hyena droids to provide anti-air defense and heavier bombing units for hitting targets behind the line.
Using modern equivalents, the clone commandos would be the specialty smaller unit special forces, such as the SEALs, Green Berets, Delta force, with the larger units with clone commanders, troopers and droid units being like US Ranger Battalions, for when larger units are needed than say the SEALs, but they also required units better trained and equipped than standard infantry units.
This would give the Empire not only great flexibility, but give them a range of options for dealing with any potential threats, while making their advanced ground forces far more effective then what they ended up with.

That way they get a few super elite units useful for putting down well armed rebels like during the Galactic Civil War, and they save costs on keeping reg recruits for most things like security.

There’s another benefit to having conscript soldiers as opposed to clones. Clones assigned to a planet could be seen as an occupying force, outsiders that the population could rally against. But if you pull your soldiers from the population then they’re no longer outsiders. Stormtroopers could be your friend, brother, or someone you knew before they joined the core. It’d be harder to convince a larger population to rally against them and would be easier to comply. After all, if someone you’re in good favor with is a part of this, then surely it can’t be all bad.

One of the things about the Empire that I find... Disappointing, is the highly competitive and hostile nature of it's military.
Heck if the Training that Ezra went through whilst undercover is anything to go by, Stormtroopers were taught that leaving injured soldiers behind for the sake of the mission is acceptable.
Rebels visualized this by the recruits being ordered to climb out of a pit, handed a blaster and were told to win at any cost, only those who came out first would be rewarded this was done by the cadets firing upon each other. This does NOT make for a strong military, instead it makes a loosely connected yet well organized and well equipped collection of independent soldiers who only care about the mission (and glory).
I think this was best visualized at the battle of Atollon where Admiral Constantine (whilst in command of an interdictor cruiser and serving under the command Grand Admiral Thrawn) broke formation to engage the Rebel flagship, after Thrawn personally contacted his ship to tell to get back in formation, Constantine not only insulted (or at least he tried to insult) his superior but he also disobeyed direct orders, his disobedience soon got him killed and threw Thrawn's battle plan into disarray, allowing the Rebels to get help and forcing Thrawn to force them to ground, instead keeping them in space where he had the advantage.
It's arrogant officers like Constantine and careless foot soldiers who litterally watch their mates get shot but still advance forward without checking their wounds that made it easy for the Rebels to evade the Empire, they were fighting themselves almost as much as they were fighting the Rebels.
Thank you for the taking the time to read this rant.

The Empire should've maintained a diverse but segregated military of human types. Human recruits would be the first line of defense on occupational roles or units on Imperial worlds. However, this won't be their exclusive role since they're far more flexible. First assault waves during campaigns would be comprised of Spaarti Clone units with human recruits bolstering or reinforcing Spaarti units during a secondary assault wave or as a reactionary force to Spaarti units. The final strategic line of defense or plan of attack would consist of Fett Clones bringing up the rear as a reserve unit, tertiary assault wave and as a relief or replacement unit for exhausted troops in the first and second waves. This state of readiness would bring strategic effectiveness to ground or naval structures. When compared to irl these levels of encounter are comparable to their real world examples or counterparts. Such as escalation of force or ROEs (rules of engagement).

Same for the Navy: Thrawn was advocating for larger numbers of smaller ships to be everywhere, while Tarkin did the opposite: fewer, beefier ships so that when you show up, you can easily crush any opposition. And said opposition knows that. Of course he went overboard with Death Starts and Superstardestroyers.

In Legends and possibly even in new Canon, the Inhibitor Chips/brainwashing would only work for so long, in Legends there were a fair few Clones who did not go along with Order 66 and actively either let their Jedi Commanders escape or helped them do it. Also, with how we see Clones later on in like Rebels and so on there is plenty of evidence to show that the effects of the chips would eventually wear off. In Legends, Emperor Palpatine never fully trusted the Clones, partly because they had been originally trained and brought up to be Defenders of a Republic that was no longer there and the other part because far more Clones than even he thought rebelled against Order 66. I believe the Empire only has 1 Clone Regiment in Legends and possibly Canon as well and that is the 501st, mostly because Vader demanded it stating he felt more capable with the Clones.......

The clones were pretty much the best soldiers throughout the 6 factions (Clones, Droids, Empire, Rebels, Alliance, First Order) because they were genetically modified to be so. That's pretty much where it ends though, they would always BE soldiers (at least the bulk of them if you exclude special cases). Since fighting is all they know and all they were born and bred to do, it goes to say that their mental lack of flexibility to empathize with non-soldier would always be their downfall. They were a direct threat to the populace at large as there basically was no war, just small 'rebel cells' or 'insurgents', so their inability to empathize would also be a huge detriment to people who were still reeling over the change from the Republic to the Empire.
