I have a old squarebody truck that was passed on from my grandpa that I'm going to paint soon. I've been a sub since about 1k I believe, and your videos make me feel confident in painting it myself. My grandpa owned a paint shop in his youth so I feel it's only right to paint it myself. Thanks to you! Keep up the good work!
I think there's many people that would say they didn't learn anything from this video. When you first started the video I saw unbelievable gloss for single stage paint! regardless of orange peel or not it still looks good and you proved that you can play decent coat down with a $20 paint sprayer. When people start complaining, they need to realize how low budget you went for all of us to have this video!
Justin Murphy They didn’t learn anything? Your comment is the only one i am seeing that is saying this but you could see the different between the before and after. It’s not perfect but it is better than before and I’m not finished at all and it was cheap for sure but no risk no reward for sure
I meant people were probably going to say that because they thought the video wasn't that good. Bro, you know I'm a supporter 100%! I'm trying to explain that people should learn from this video. That others are always trying to find something negative and saying they're not learning anything new which is a lie!
Love that you actually give out steps on what you did. A lot of videos I found years ago would be all useless and wouldn’t share what they actually did or doing. That paint job is really nice
James, your videos are the most honest videos out there. I like the fact you show everything. The good and the bad. It’s a DIY channel and Believe it or not we learn a lot from it. Most people out there only show the beginning and the results. You should be proud of yourself. Thanks
You're awesome man I requested it and you show it. this is the stuff that I care about the most because I don't know what you're supposed to do. I would probably get scared and not sure how much or too little to do. This gives me an idea of how its supposed to look when its wet sanded and dried. Haze but smooth then polish transforms it back.
I am impressed with the new electric sprayer. I am almost certain the orange peel is due to it not been used at that desired temperature which I refer to as the sweet spot. I am certain you will figure out all these quirks to make this ride look awesome once again. Keep up the good work and look forward to Future content on this vehicle.
Des420 Thanks it was a cheap cheap job I had the buffer, compound, electric spray gun, tape and sand paper. Only thing I paid for was the paint and reducer/hardener so it’s a $60 paint job. Still needs work but it’s easy to fix up
I've never seen this done and needed a tutorial. I like the "good enough" and "you could do it better by" comments. Thank you for this, and the paint video. Both "good enough" for what I need to do.
Great coverage! using an electric gun is like a handicap as far as flowing your paint! Getting even finishes in the heat of the day with enamel paint is tough especially in the drive way... You did good! I've had to work with what i have all my life... This is a prime example of a person not letting anything stand in their way when it comes to getting the job done... Advice, id start from top to bottom, less likely to get the air hose or clothing in your paint while reaching over to spray top panels... Ive used high gloss Anchor safety guard II with synthetic reducer about 1-1 mix and shot it successfully, but to wet sand it you'd need to add a polyurethane converter J1100 basically hardener....
John Fox Yup it’s getting wet sanded down adding another coat all around then pearl 2k clear over it since I have the pearl and 2k but that will be out of the HVLP.
U can get runs out using putty.spread it over the run let it dry then get a piece of a paint paddle wrapped with 1000 and sand the run till u start sanding into the putty around the run . It keeps u from sanding through and ensures that the run is cut all the way out.hope this helps
Yea if i had more funds i could go buy some more sand paper and get back to work but the sand paper i was using is all worn out -_-.It is what it is though. It will be nice when im finished just stuck in a tough spot right now.
@@JamesDguy I definitely was glad to see you try with that gun. I have the exact one at home and wondered how it would turn out for something like that.
I did a rustoleum paint job few weeks ago on my channel. I got a lot of orange peel from the HVLP purple gun and I’ll tell yah wetsanding and buffing is a LOT of work!
You did a good job with what you had. Preparation is key and you did a better job of stripping parts than a lot of panel beaters who mainly just mask everything.
Dude, for how much you spent in total (paint gun included), that’s pretty damn good. If you can’t afford anything and have shitty paint, this isn’t a terrible option. Cool videos. 🤙🏽
For buffing . If the pad is sticking or jumping around like that . Or for working in hotter climates like you are outside. It is probably good to keep a spray bottle with distilled water to help you keep buffing until polish is completely broken down. That said , I think it’s looking pretty good.
Order yourself some icing or other high quality finishing filler and apply it around the run. Let it cure then sand down. The filler will protect the rest of the paint until the run has been sanded down to the same level.
@@JamesDguy You remember I guessed you were going to use the electric gun. When I get back to America next year, I will paint my Jeep this way. When I do, I will link it to you.
Big jump from 600 to 2000 but if you can’t see sanding marks I guess , who cares. I like to sand one direction with one grit, and then cross at a hard angle to take down the peaks. This also lets you know when previous sanding marks are gone as you will no longer see marks in one direction.

Now I'm not afraid to do my own paint job. I would put a thick layer of paint to sand it down more, quite insurance if you got too deep, then excess polish. Clear can follow but cannot be done on open area.
After the sanding it honestly looks pretty good. I think mostly the paint just needs a bit more cure time first and you'll be able to get even better results. Really just my guess though.
If u use DA sander with a interface foam pad in between the sand paper and sander pad. could bang it out fast. Just be careful around the edges and high spots

Just a trick I learned today about removing runs use a piece of masking or painter's tape over it an not to hard smooth over it an it will remove the run. Hope this helps in later video's.

Wow, just came across your channel and I can say. I love your work. So many people rattle can or do a DYI paint job but never get rid of the orange peel then they are like - It looks like crap. Removing the orange peel and imperfections after a good spray is the key to a great looking DYI paint job. After you are done spraying you are not done if you want it to look good. Even with the best spray job you are going to have some orange peel. Good job, I subd/liked.
U should do a another automatic turbo but this time tune n everything n see how long it well last...but besides that nice job on paint the car it came out really nice I'm thinking of trying it out
Seems to be the big negative on the electric sprayers. Even when used for cabinets and stuff, the orange peal is excessive. People have experimented with thinning the paint for some slight improvement. The rattle cans have much less orange peal. Of course, then you can't add hardener.
Look ok to me better then riding around with just primer on your car . Like I did for years on my mighty max truck . If I would of seen this I would of painted my truck myself . Love it brother ! Nice color it reminded me of my primer gray I was rocking for years lol 🚚💥💥💨💨💨💨💨💨💨
Do you plan on removing the dents before you spray it a second time? There is an old body shop trick to remove a run. You cover it glazing putty and you sand until the run and putty are gone. There is nothing worst than sanding a run out and breaking through, especially when you’ve told the customer their car would be ready for pickup the same day.
Can’t believe you painted that outside.... what’s the temp in Texas? I’m in uk and have done some spraying outside ... it makes things 10 times more difficult... do you have a friend with a garage?
Good video! I wish the whole orange peel wasnt such a big issue in the car painting world. I had about a normal factory orange peel in my paint job and to tell you the truth i kind of liked the whole orange peel look. Not sure if i am the only one but... Having said that because of it being a thing i ended up doing all the sanding and buffing and got the orange peel out. Looks good but as far as my own tastes i could have been as happy with the orange peel... Oh well... It is what it is...
Good try :) i did it under a party tent with extra sail and a good paint mask ^^..and my roof looks amazing i used a compressor and a decent spraygun from finixa and after some bit of wet sanding with 1500 to 2000 and buffing my roof looks like new xD. now i sprayed parts of a mercedes 240 (1984 )with single stage rattlecan and it has some peel so i wil have to sand it ^^ . I am always looking on you tube to see how to improve things from stuff i dont do often. Good to see you try to tell ppl what they can do to improve things :) i should make videos to .xD. keep it up!
That really looks friggin amazing!, you made a Maaco paint job look like factory!..Question, is there any swirl marks from the buffer after polishing? and, what does that tat on your arm say?

ric baker Good to know! My grandpa/dad and uncle are the pros but I’m stubborn and don’t wanna ask lol 😂
Saab Tech Yea I’m still not 100% given up on it but I am breaking my spray gun out soon for extra coats.
Looks nice man, good enough for me too. Thanks for sharing your methods and how they worked. Cheers!
you should use meguairs M105 and M205 cutting and finishing polish on it
Still looks good man. 👍👍
Looks Awesome! Keep up the good work!! You should put out a ad in your area for car paint jobs! Make more $, and maybe more video content?
LuckyRosco Ima do the dents with PDR I don’t like messing with putty for dents but for the runs it’s ok for me to use.
Thanks dude, this is exactly what I needed to see.. looks great hope mine comes out as good
lookin good. great job!!
Can’t believe you painted that outside.... what’s the temp in Texas? I’m in uk and have done some spraying outside ... it makes things 10 times more difficult... do you have a friend with a garage?
Simon Anderson Professional Guitar Tuition Friend I have has his own project in there otherwise I would use it. It was 100 degrees when I painted this
Good to see you try to tell ppl what they can do to improve things :) i should make videos to .xD. keep it up!
I was screaming inside watching you sand and cut the edges like that
It looks really good bro.
Marco Jackson Thanks it still need work but nothing I can’t handle
U did great I bought the avanti from harbor freight ima paint my s10 blazer with it
I don't think it looks all to bad. Cheap gun. Cheaper paint. The car is old... Looks really good for what it is.
dude looks awesome if you can show the ratio again and explain it again thanks
That really looks friggin amazing!, you made a Maaco paint job look like factory!..Question, is there any swirl marks from the buffer after polishing? and, what does that tat on your arm say?
