- In this episode we finish up the f150 repair by color sanding and buffing the bedside. I'll share with you step by step how I remove any imperfections or texture in the clear. If your doing a repair at home and your paint is not perfect, don't stress cause alot can be corrected in the polishing process. so you can have that glass like finish!

Tips: use soapy water so the paper glides across the panel.
stay away from edges and body lines. it makes it a pain to buff and also is easy to break through the paint.
get a squeegee. if you have “trash” in your paint, it will show up like little dots. what i like to do is bury them in the clear coat and then wetsand the spots down with 1k till they are gone and then the whole panel with 2-5k.
use a cotton buffing pad. these are difficult to use, because they easily burn through the paint, but if you keep your step one compound on it and make sure the panel doesn’t get too hot, you will be fine.
DO NOT TILT THE DA. if you are new to polishing use a soft block to keep it flat. if you tilt the da, you will get da marks which show through when you have a shine on the car.
use 3 step polish. this includes a cutting compound, a polish and a finishing polish. step one is to get it smooth and shine. it will leave swirls but step 2-3 take care of them.
get a color correction light. harbor freight sells one for 50 bucks or so and it helps so much. if you are in a paint booth, you can’t really see what it will look like in natural light. the light will imitate the suns light, but be sure not to shine it in your eyes.
be careful while wiping your panel off after buffing. you can leave scratches in the paint that are a pain to get out by rubbing too hard. i recommend using a soft microfiber making sure to remove the tag from it, fold it into 4s and use light pressure in little circles.
protect your shine with a wax. this goes without saying but i use turtle wax and it works wonders.
the darker the color, the more imperfections will show. ie black paint will show more swirls then white paint.
take ur time. this is about attention to detail.
research the tools and materials you are using. know how much to use, how fast to run the polisher etc.

hey man love all your stuff. I wet sanded my hood by hand with a 1200 used a da with 1500 2000 and 3000 and after buffing i realized i could see all the micro scratches. Did i go to low with the 1200?

I have a fender that I was painting ( first time doing this) and I was using can spray and it started to sputter
So I need to sand the paint right? Get it even before the clear

If it's in the base and you putting on more paint then I would use 600 put a couple more coats of paint than clear. 2000 grit will work if it's mior otherwise it may take a while tosand it smooth and you will still need another coat or two of base.

Depends on the clear but wait overnight and you'll be fine some clears you cut and buff sooner. Check the technical data sheet for the clear your using. Appreciate the support!

Chris, I was able to paint the roof and the 4 doors on my tundra. managed to get 2 minor runs one on the roof and one on one of the 4 doors. Is this good sandpaper to sand and buff my truck.
The dura gold would be good for the first step but I would use the 3m 3000 then 5000 to finish

Great video, many thanks. Gave me the confidence to get many imperfections out of my clear coat and get it nice and shining! One moan though. I don't want to buy a polisher just to do one small panel, so followed right up until you got the electric polisher. Is there another grit paper or compound that I could finish the whole job by hand?? Many thanks from the UK..
You could go 8000 after the 5000 and you could get a polishing pad for you orbital sander if you have one.

Hi Chris, After you cut and buffed did you do a final polish? Also, do you have any experience with those ceramic coatings?
I haven't used or had a run in with ceramic coating yet but from my understanding it can create problems painting. I don't usually do a specific final polsh only on black and I just switch to a orbital polisher with the csi compound.
My freshly painted black base/clearcoat panel now got some white needle size spots here and there after wet sanding and polishing. Sanding both primer and first coat of base I find it hard to believe I could have burned through,,, A few fisheyes in my clear there were. I gave good recommended flash time for all degasing. What else can I have messed up ? Dust nibs between base layers ? Can 2K clear make white looking gas pockets ...or someting thereabout ? They seem like they are underneath the surface of my now else glass smooth clear, Cant be felt, just seen.
It could be small fisheyes that the wet sanding residue exposed. Things like that in clear is generally from contaminants in your compressed air. Make sure you have clean dry air.
hi mate, thanks for making this detailed vid! However I am punching the air right now because I have done this process I feel in a similar way, wet sanding only, from 800, to 1000, to 2k and 3k. I then cut with a foam pad (meguairs medium cut), followed by a final polish on a soft pad. Low and behold there are still swirls and deep looking scratches in the finish. Do you think it’s possible that these scratches im seeing are from the epoxy under the clear coat (which was sanded with 120 before i applied clear), and it’s just printing through? Apologies for the paragraph.
It's hard for me to say, one question is, is the clear cured? How long has it been since it was painted? Sometimes if the clear is not fully cured it's difficult to get those fine scratches out. I don't think you could mistake body work scratches for clear coat scratches so it's probly in clear.
Hello again! So I started the process of trying to cut and buff and my sandpaper started gumming up immediately on my orbital sander. Does this mean it hasn’t cured yet? It’s been three days since I laid down the clear. I’m gonna give it a week and then try again. Hopefully there enough clear left.
Yes it should be cured by now. I suspect you don't have enough activator in your clear. Get it in the sun and pray it cures.
Random question what air hose do you recommend my last job the hose kept wanting to knot up super stiff plastic like hose no hood

Color won't matter as long as it has clear coat. Darker color do take a bit more time as they show scatches much more.
What material for rotary buffing - foam, lambs wool pad? Some are more harsh than others
I prefer a foam pads, white first, then black for final polish.
Does sanding take off more clearcoat than just starting with claybar and going right to buffing?
Wet sanding does remove clear. If you can buff the imperfections out without wet sanding that's the best option.
What buffet is that
Every time I wet sand with a orbital I get pigtails that are deep even when I use a 2000 grit from start to finish. I am even using a soft interface pad. Does using a 3000 grit help this? could the dirt nibs be breaking off and causing this?
No, not really. A sander with a short stroke, a finish sander will help. I got sick of pigtails so I mostly start sanding by hand and the switch to orbital for 3000 and 5000. I get better results that way. Appreciate your comment and support!

Yes, just using water and the compound is finishing cut. You don't need a real aggressive compound with this process so a med to light cut compound will work well. Appreciate the support!

Does a wool pad work effectively ?
Yes wool pads work great some guy prefer them to foam. I like foam, this may sound strange but I can't stand all the wool fiber in the air and all over.
I don't have a machine buffer, what type of polish would you recommend for best results by hand
It will be alot of work by hand and difficult to get good results. I use csi compound
I’m planning on painting a car in a portable garage/canopy. I realize this isn’t ideal. If I get done with the base coat and notice that there is dust or bugs in the paint, do I stop there, wait for the paint to cure, then try to buff it to clean it up? Or, do I continue on to the clear coat?

Same for solid color single stage only. Can't wet sand metallic colors in single stage. It will distort color

May I ask how long does the polish last? Will the paint haze return (just like after wetsanding) or its permament?
It permanently polished shine will last life of the clear.

Thanks buddy. yes, it's the same process. It is removing a small amount of clear as long as you applied two coats your good.

@@ANDY-we7mr I would only use 1500 if it's got heavy orange peel like in the video. You don't need to use 3000 but it will be easier to buff.

I'm lost. My 2015 Jetta had scratches. I used 1500, 2000 then 3000. The whole hood was evenly dull but no scratches. I've tried Mothers, Chemical guys polish but I can't get any shine what so ever back. Do you think I sanded off my clear coat?
Hard to say, you woulve had to sand alot to remove all the clear.
It's been 6 months so you probably don't have this problem anymore. But next time, use a microfibrr and medium cut compound and then a buffing foam light pad with a fine polish
Any tips for to make sure you dont leave any scratches even after polishing the clear coat? For some reason it does get more clear but in some angles with light, you can see some of the scratches in the clear! I usually sand by hand with the sponge block as well! Any feedback will help!
When I get down to those fine scratches I will use a lighter polish. In wizard's it's called fine cut.

I also use a softer pad the gray pads are typically finishing pads. This is important cause a heavier cutting pad could be putting fine scratches in your clear . Also If your clear is still curing it may be a litte to soft to refine those fine scratches . About 3 days after clear you should be able to get those fine scratches polished out. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
It's simple get most of the major sand scratches out with the compound then take your time with the polish to get rid of the fine scratches I usually use 3m but the main objective is not to rush the job and sand and buff one panel at a time

My friend used the euro clear 2:1 from valspar 3 coats, after 10 days drying the 2000 grit sand paper will leave piggy tails and marks , any ideas why? I used finish 1 and that thing can be buffed like 24 has later
That is sometimes a problem with using a orbital sander and 2000. It's not usually the clear you use although that may effect it. The pig tails have more to do with the sand paper collecting clear on the sand paper and causing the pigtails. I've had this problem and its frustrating. If you want to use the 2000 on the orbital check the paper often to make sure its clean. I've mainly had this happen with 1500 so bad that I won't use it on an orbital any more. I've stopped using the orbital for the first step and just use it for 3000 and 5000.

When you start polishing with compound on a foam buffing wheel/pad do you moisten the foam pad or do you leave it dry, when you put the pea-sized drops of the compound on it and start the buffing process? This issue is never addressed in these DIY videos. Thank you.
I think it's recommended to moisten the pad lightly. I don't do that but it won't hurt anything.

How soon can you buff a vehicle after paint?
All clears are a little different. I like to let it cure over night no heat in normal temps. It could still be a little soft so be mindful of that.

I haven't polished and painted cars in over 6 years and definitely found this video helpful. I had a friend paint my car this time around instead of myself and it looks great, but either dirt nibs or solvent pop but can't really tell yet as I haven't wet sanded it down yet. There are a bunch and wanted to do this right so any advice there would be appreciated.
Also, wondering for more tips on trim pieces that aren't on the car yet such as sideskirts, front lip, and smaller pieces like that. The material surface is different and I'm working with polyurethane and fiberglass for those. I'm thinking to just wet sand by hand, but the polishing seems like it'll take me an eternity doing it by hand. I do have a cordless powered buff tool and also a corded random orbital wondering your opinion on what to do here without going thru the 2 coats of clear on the car.
2000 , 3000 and 5000 it will buff easy . As long as your not sanding to deep with 2000 your good.
How long do you wait after shooting the clear before. Sanding?
I like to wait a least 24 hrs this way it's cured but easy to cut and buff.

any idea why when i wet sand a fresh painted panel and then use rubbing compound it looks hazy? i recently painted a fender and door, i waited 48 hours and then wet sanded with 1500, 2000, 3000 and 4000 grit . then i used the orange 6 inch pad from Harbour Freight with 3M rubbing compound , after i cleaned it with microfiber towel. it looks hazy! i switched to Meguiars Ultimate compound and same thing happens . what did i do wrong??
The orange pad is a heavy cutting pad. You need a finishing pad black or grey looking pad. Might be the issue. Let me know if it helps

How’s that mystic stuff, compare to 3M? O tried many other compounds and polish’s, idk why but i still tend to go back to 3M. Lol
I've only been using it a few weeks but I do like it. Is it better than 3m that's hard to say. It's worth a try tho.

Just discovered your channel and have been watching many of your fine videos. I hear you caved to the criticism of adding music tracks to fill the dead air. As most novices (I'm a former pro) the volume is way too high in the mix. But credit where due, you took the time to pick fade in and out spots that resolve nicely rather than just cut out when the voice comes back in. Also, thanks for not using the '80's drum tracks that been totally overused like many, many other channels. Personally, I prefer dead air. If I want to listen to music I will go to music channels. But if if you insist on having a backing track, please bury it 30-40dB down in the mix where it is just perceptable, but not distracting. I came to listen to YOU. And because I value what you have to say I'd rather not be distracted by background muzak.
Appreciate the feedback, I've went back and forth about music and one video I had music way to low. I will keep that in mind for future video's. 3000 and 5000 is overkill. If you laid down the paint smooth ,2000 is all you need imo
Maybe, but I'll tell you it's so much easier to polish 5000 scratches over 2000. Yeah you can buff 2000. I actually want to take it a step further with 8000 which basically buffs it.

I always cut through the clear. Clearly my clear isn’t thick enough. There must be a guide that tells you approximately how much paint is used for a square foot or a panel. Something to help out us amateurs.
Two good coats should be plenty. What are you sand clear with?

You can use more than you think. For beginners do 3 but once you’re borderline running it, without running it; 2 coats is plenty just wait the recommended amount of time in between coats and if you do have a sag, it can be easier to fix than being dry, for this reason exactly.
😂 What dufuq did this guy mean when he said repeatedly sand in one direction?
Wetting the panel using a orbital sander isn't really necessary and you really should be using a 3/8 inch interface pad
3-5000 grit is worthless. anything more than 2000 you are wasting time and energy. I have been a professional painter for over 30 years and get fantastic results with 2000 being the absolute finest paper that i use. Custom jobs get started with 600 grit on a hard wood block to get all the peel out and then step it up from there 800,1000,1200,1500 and then 2000 if need be. You cannot cut out orange peel with fine paper on a soft pad, but whatever you think looks great is all that matters.
I use to finish with 2000 for many years.
Taking it to 3000 than 5000 makes it so quick to buff it's a huge difference!
The physics of reflection says that when you create small enough scratches near the wavelength of light, you’re at the limit and finer abrasive won’t improve the reflectivity. Visible light corresponds to 2000-5000 grit, and wax reduces the depth of these scratches.
Not true I use a 3k foam backed on a da every job I do and it cuts your buff time allmost in half
Is that your final grit? Luckily i am out of the collision/production BS so saving time is not an issue. I charge by the hour and make it as nice as the customer wants. I did that hurry hurry crap for a long time always being pushed for more jobs by the managers and owners and always hated it.@@garrettvandenhout7676
