Unironically this is a valid criticism of the game though. Kills don't give a lot especially early-mid game, while farm gives so much. It makes it feel a lot more like a PvE game than PvP at times.
@@akitake_ is it really valid criticism? i feel like its an opinion people can have, but its not like thats an objective downside. in essence its still a moba. what is a big part of dying early on is having to use ur zipboost early or losing out on a lot of souls. by killing the enemy the soul gap is larger because you can crash in the wave and the enemy misses them. PLUS you dont need to zipboost back to lane depending on wavestate and pressuring ur enemy and denying waves still is very active in this game imo, which makes it interesting and not "boring" or makes it feel liek a pve game at all
It's so easy to get carried away with the shooter mechanics and think I can just outplay and kill everyone, I gotta constantly remind myself that I'm playing Dota
late game against a good team will remind you pretty fast, games become some 3d DotA with all the jank, target ccs, spam, effects flying left and right
@@fieryfirefly5769 The good thing is that if you're better than the enemy team at dota fundamentals (farming, positioning, map pressure, rotations, etc.) you won't need to outplay them with shooter mechanics, you'll just be outright too strong for them to do anything against you even if you play like a blind goat was given control of your character.
Split pushing is so useful, I can't describe how many times I've been able to destroy an enemy Shrine while the entire enemy team was preoccupied with trying to fight just half my team.
@@MultiFluffyMuffin back when I played dota I went on a 20+ game win streak with Lycan and that pretty much sums up the coms experience "Why aren't you fighting with us?" They say as I am taking raks
Same im the only one pushing the lanes or defending.... meanwhile my Team dies... but cuz of me soaking all souls all the time instead of fighting stupid fights,i have a 10-16k lead and def 1v5 most of the time. Or just Stall so my Team can grief again....
The problem is when your team is so hell bent on doing that, that your split pushing is all for nothing. Taking objectives is useful but only as much as the lead it can give you. It's funny how people talk that kills aren't valuable enough, meanwhile I feel like it's impossible to outfarm your teams deaths.
Many players need to hear this. A lot don't understand any of what's explained in this video and focus on fighting way too much with VERY LITTLE map awareness, and end up being outnumbered in enemy territory, dying, and giving the advantage back to them instead of shoving lanes (which will slowly eat away towers on its own if undefended AND make the enemy miss last hits) and clearing the jungle COMPLETELY. If you don't clear out the jungle you're leaving souls on the table that could be used for items. An efficient jungle is one that's respawning as often as possible.
tell me you a solo player without telling me you are a solo player the comment 😂 I feel you bro Im currently doubting every yamato I see cause they come from genji or yasuo 😂
@@ByDav1Zz Which is wild when Yamato has quite good jungle clearing, with both her 1 and 3, she can easily aoe down camps and her left click has great dps up close.
@@ByDav1Zz Yeah, but in the start you usually would prefer to stay in lane anyways to deny the enemy their farm. Ideally you'd only start clearing camps once you've destroyed the enemy guardian, and you can give yourself much more time by shoving all the way into their walker. Once Yamato gets to that point, she has plenty of damage for at least small and medium camps.
This is awesome when the team uses their brain and fights in an advantageous position. More often than not you'll have one or two people in voice comms begging to teamfight whatever the cost, jumping on the first person they see with very little map awareness. And they end up losing fight after fight and blaming the rest of the team for it.
This is strategy fundamentals for any MOBA, and sometimes even league of legends pros fall into the must-teamfight-trap mindset. All of what you've said, basically is what LS(former starcraft pro, league coach, streamer) has been harping on for years and years and still being ostracized for his opinions. He was a Terran player on starcraft, and his main strategy is slowly suffocate the enemy and leave them no room to breathe until they make a huge blunder and capitalize on it. Essentially, when playing from behind, it's the same thing. Try to avoid team fights as much as possible and try to reach item breakpoints before re-engaging on huge objectives. Great video!
For those who don’t know, the player at 3:00 is Metro. He is an Overwatch player and is one of the most disliked people in the community. It is no surprise that he came to Deadlock and immediately became a meme
As a person who also swapped to deadlock from OW,Metro will be a great content source for memes. He is known as a feeder so you will see him rundown main and feed from time to time. Bro got good aim but he's never been a fan of cooldown based characters (Tanks in OW in this case). I look forward to more memes from Metro's outburst.
To add to that, back in the days he used to stream Dead By Daylight and had an actually decent personality. I recently recognized him streaming Deadlock and was happy to watch for a while, but it was mentally crucifying how toxic he was towards one of his teammates. He was behaving like a childish POS on-stream.
@@XenoFilesCharge So just like any other DBD player lol. Most toxic community I've ever played in despite being known as a heavy LGBTQ+ community. Which at this point I think is untrue at how often I got called the f slur over there.
I have never played a moba before but immediately fell in love with this game your guides are helping me get over the steep learning curve so smoothly. I can't thank you enough for all the videos.
i have never heard anyone talk about this, but something very different about this moba is that there is no passive currency generation at all. you only get souls from doing things which are killing minions, wisps, neutral camps, opening boxes, delivering the urn, or securing kills or objectives. a lot of players spend way too much time trying to damage other players to secure a kill, and since you only get the souls when you actually secure one, it is often a huge risk to try to go for them constantly because it likely means you are missing out at getting an advantage from getting more souls elsewhere.
Yeah, as a league player one of the things I keep being tricked by is the fact I don't have passive income, so I might rotate around the map, not farm much and be surprised I don't have enough currency still.
@@MenwithHill honestly i recommend buying monster rounds early as well if you're going even in lane or ahead. it will let you sneak away to pick up a camp quickly, and it will let you get the bigger camps earlier. something else to know, the small camps with 3 enemies in a triangle shape can be hit with a melee attack all at once if you stand right in the middle of the monster on the long edge of the triangle and aim between the other two
I actually often end up winning my lane because the enemy spend the majority of the time trying to harass me and shave away my health while I ignore them and kill their minions, using the cover to damage them and just playing it smart and safe, eventually I chip down their gaurdian and they fall apart as they realise while they where wasting time harassing me but not securing kills I was farming up and becoming much more powerful than them, which is when I usually start killing them and pushing them even further back, if they just farmed the minions they'd probably beat me because I am not good at fighting other players.
A lot of players come to this game from over shooters. So MOBA basics are not common for them, like: push lanes, get objects, back, farm jungle camps and secure profit or just play for defence and not go far from base.
And then there's moba players who think that their years of experience playing those games mean they can instantly just f****** do whatever they want in this game and not get punished.
@@zapcat6029mid boss gives your entire team a 3 minute buff which includes: 50% one time respawn reduction (lost on death), 50% increased minion health, and increased fire rate. You only get this if you break the rejuvenator with a heavy melee, so it could potentially be stolen.
@@zapcat6029 I don't think the role of the beginners tutorial is to explain everything. People would get bored and leave. It teaches enough of the basics to get people somewhat into the game, but as it is a MOBA, a lot of the more complicated strategy and features are left to be explained by yourself or the community. Maybe by the time of the full release they elaborate on the specifics in-game.
This is a big thing that I've been playing with the mindset of that I've taken from playing league previous and that is Making the enemy back off is EQUALLY as valuable as actually getting the kill on them. Especially in this game as there isn't a very fast way to get back to base so honestly, you could have MORE pressure on the lane or more time to roam and get others kills if you force the enemy to back off instead of getting that kill in particular.
Yup. 10+ years of league and a lot of players still don't get this there either. Getting your enemy so low they have to back off and leave you to free-farm is almost just as valuable as getting the kill. A lot of the time it's better to leave them low HP and back than to dive a tower to get the kill (but give them your life in return) It feels wrong but it's the right thing to do.
@@akitake_ It's more valuable. Farm has always been more valuable. More farm means more econ means faster access to better items means more kills and objectives taken means win.
Compared to other MOBAs I've played, the times that people "run away" with the game seem to be very few and far between. I've been part of MANY Deadlock matches where our start was horrendous - yet we manage to retreat & group up at base at the right moments to give the opposing team a bad time. Maybe this will change once the community gets better at the game as a whole, but as of right now, games can incredibly easily swing in one direction or the other and it makes every moment of a match exciting ! Sometimes even 20-30minutes in, the winner still cannot easily be determined - unlike my other experiences with MOBAs, where a match can last 30-45min, and you know its been lost since the 15minute mark.
Eh, League is just like that. Lost/won several games where 50 minutes long one team was in the lead but one bad team fight and long respawn timers meant flipping the whole game.
Great video, I’ve honestly won many games where we were getting destroyed just by getting the team to work together on defense for almost 5 minutes, and then capitalize on it and turn the game around quickly
I've had a bunch of rough matches in the past couple days and I can say for sure that all of them were lost because my team was disinterested in farming into mid/late game. Even when I play poorly I still end up with the most souls on the team 😭
A strategy theory when it comes to games is that if you have an advantage you should be playing to maintain that advantage which means playing safe and not giving the enemy team an opportunity to come back. The opposite is true if you are lossing, if you are badly lossing you and at a disadvantage (in an ideal sense and people aren't throwing away leads etc) this is when you you should try unconventional means and risky tactics to try and gain back an advantage. All of that assuming there isn't some swing factor and people are playing perfectly that sort of thing. This video is honestly one of the few places i have seen that verbalized pretty well or at least close to that idea. Is it kind of boring? It can be yeah but the way to win when you have an advantage is to play to maintain it and hunting for fights and stuff is hunting for chances to give the enemy an out of disadvantage
This is why my knowledge with dota has helped me sooo much with my onboarding for this game. And as guides for characters become more robust and fine tuned, so will your confidence in character "online" timings become. Which is to say the time your character should be active and looking to equalize or set up ganks and pushes for lanes. Like I got my timings for when infernus typically is ready to dominate the mid game and it's around 7-9 mins depending on nature of my game and how ahead and behind my team is.
In BF my squad and I would always be top of the board because we always followed the motto “play the objective”. Kills are not the objective. Destroying the enemy base is the objective. Kills are a means to that end but should never be an end in themselves. As a Shiv main that helped me to reconnect that in my mind. Since really the only way I get rolled on Shiv is if I am locked down or just can’t get close enough, if I can play my position and timing better by split pushing more and picking my fights I think I can win even more games. Thanks for helping me realize I should focus on even more split pushing and the jungle. I am feel my CoD instincts fading away and now I’m leaning back to BF. Kills are fun but not the point. I rather win with 10 kills than lose with 25.
If you could do a keybind guide I would really appreciate it. There are so many buttons to lock over and the standard doesn't seem ergonomic. The content is looking very good, keep it up man.
Def def definitely my favorite deadlock creator. I started dota in 2012, and I wish there was someone back then who was able to make such succinct, effective guides as yours.
Split pushing is so powerful. I've had teammates be mad at me split pushing with the most souls as Haze. Then I solo kill the patron and they say GG WP.
Yeah Soul Power Gin or even Gunner Gin can easily solo both shrines in 1 ult/1 mag respective of build. SP Gins ult lasts almost as long as the CD with only about 7 seconds down time. Have been carrying games HARD solo with her
I'm completely new to MOBAs and haven't really played any PVP game much at all. But I'm trying this game out with a couple of friends and I'm just soaking up all the information out there because I love it so much. I've come to a point where I more often than not win my lanes, but then I don't really know what to do, so I just go looking for fights. Now I know what I should do! Thank you!
Thank you for this video. Deadlock is my first time ever playing a MOBA and I needed to hear this as a shooter player. I keep thinking this is Team Fortress 2 where I can carry my team with my aim. It has certainly been quite a learning experience! Very humbling as well. Thank you again!
If you play for kills you should play vindicta. You get extra souls for finishing blows on the sniper, I got a 20k lead after losing my lane but helping to kill literally everyone else
Please Jungle/roaming guide next?? I have absolutely zero clue about the jungle camps or buffs and things like that. When to get jungle camps? When to roam? What is the middle monster? Urns? Help! Thanks, your videos are great.
You roam when you have shoved your lane under enemy tower and you don't have any way to kill your enemy laner that is free of risk. Ideally you'd push the minions under the enemy walker, but even just shoving into their guardian is enough if you play a character that can clear jungle camps fast enough. As of when in the game you do this? That depeonds on the character and which items you have. Some characters clear better than others, and can therefore afford jungle camps earlier in the game. If your opposing laner is being passive, yet also staying healthy and keeping their towers from taking too much damage, it might be worth investing into items that help you clear camps more efficiently, so you can capitalize on camps more, and getting a soul lead that way instead of through towers and kills.
So many players who don’t have a MOBA background need this video, I‘ll see teammates just run it down trying to pick a fight any chance they can. They’re so used to that fast paced action they don’t have the patience to farm lane.
I don't think it's a lack of patience I think they don't understand how important securing a soul advantage is, and more than that don't understand that getting kills is not the best way to secure a soul advantage.
Dude, this is EXACTLY what I've been missing in my 12 games I had in Deadlock so far... Even if we had an early lead, we would waste it somewhere by the late game. Thanks for explaining what was going on!
What ive learned about deadlock as an ex gm ow player who never played a moba: kills dont matter too much, dont worry too much about getting picks, what matters most is that you get your money up before you get your funny up, and the grind never stops
The thing i love most about deadlock is the tug of war aspect, the fact that everything you do matters and even a game that seems like an easy win or a crushing defeat can be turned around if the losing team starts putting in work and pulling things back to their advantage
I think a perfect video playlist one could watch to get an idea on the advantages of playing defensive in mobas, is Alois "League fundamentals" Since he talks more about the logic behind laning with minions and using shoves and crashes to buy time and items. While always being safe to farm since the enemy minions are approaching your tower, and not vice versa.
I really appreciate this video as a shooter player coming into Deadlock as opposed to a moba player coming into Deadlock there are a lot of intricacies to playing a moba that need to be explained to me and something like this is extremely valuable in helping my mindset change when playing this game.
thank you for this video. So many people that never touched a moba in their life are making the most basic mistakes that might be not that obvious to people new to the genre, and they might see your video and perhaps get better at the game :)
Really appreciate the Video. This is my first time playing a Moba and you really helped me understand the basics. At first I was playing this game like a typical shooter and i got destroyed everytime wondering why i do so little damage and the opponent always is a bulletsponge. I might not have gotten better but atleast I know now why I suck xD
Nice one ! Another big issue i see is people not converting good fights into objectives.. when ahead and if your tean gets 3/4 kills that can eadily mean a walker push or urn before they respawn. After they respawn then we can split up and shove lanes/ take jungles / put pressure
At the end of the day, this is still a Moba and these are fundamentals in this genre of games. When to push , knowing which fights you can take, how to make space (allowing for a sneaky split push). Great job highlighting these points and to the uninformed, again, welcome to MOBAs!
As a new moba player that has tons to learn.. thank you for the validation of playing defense and focusing objectives and farming instead of pushing a team fight every life.. my team had 2 base guardians left while they still had 2 walkers up.. two of our players were 15-20k souls behind.. but i kept getting blamed for farming and pushing objectives instead of constantly fighting team fights. I finished 15 7 and 10 with two walker(both 3/4 plus dmg done) and guardian takedowns.. we lost but i was blamed for not being at every team fight.. even at minute 4 when i killed my guardian and player and was currently getting enemy jungle.. not an ego post at all.. i was questioning if i truly was playing it wrong since two of my teammates (who werent the low souls) were constantly crying..
Good video, agree with your comments, to many people want to play full aggro and get picked off, this has been so common in every MOBA I've played. Main Character syndrome as it's ingrained into us from decades of gaming that kills are everything. Also, sorry to hear of your lack of friends.
I've recently started to just farm farm farm as much as possible. Every game since looking to hit every creep wave and all the camps I can and avoiding fights and I've had much more success
I really think AP lead is a bigger deal than soul lead, Abilities on higher levels have more power than some items and can change the whole dynamic of a team fight
11:40 idk if it's a coincidence, or planned, but if you actually know the literal range of the walker's slam range and managed to just tip toe around it, that's insane 💀
The solution I've found with this is trying to farm closer to my teammate(s) who I predict will feed, so I can potentially contribute some damage or abilities to the fight. I won't do anything risky, I'll only fight from a safe range with an escape plan, and without compromising my farm or lane pushing.
I always like to probe from a safe distance. It lets me gauge how much damage they're doing, waste their abilities, and maintain better ground. Then, dive in and block their exits, and hopefully take the kill if not simply scaring them off for a while.
One thing that confused me a bit is the way the game decides to put you in a lane. Is there support, adc, etc that the game chooses to lane you against. Or is it just random
10:41, theoretically blue lanes souls aren't wasted, even if you kill the minions, at one point you will have to retreat. It's either get the 400 now or later, difference being if you get them at the enemies side, where you can get ganked, or your side. I have learned that, if you aren't pushing, it's best to push till mid and just farm on your side, that way you don't get surrounded. The souls are wasted if towers get involved, because then the soul loss doesn't equalize between the minions. Same applies if you have an bigger minion army, then it pushes through more waves than an equal amount would do, making you loose souls too
I think a lot of the player mentality that runs counter to this and explains why so many people don't coordinate like this is assumptions based off of their previous experience with other games like TF2 or Overwatch, where having a player advantage in a teamfight can be way more impactful than it is in deadlock, and pushing objectives is the main thing you do outside of the teamfights. most players don't immediately extrapolate the soul mechanics into prioritizing earning more from things like the jungle or occupying every lane for a power advantage, especially because in so many other games that players are going to be coming from that same kind of advantage is primarily or only earned through a higher K/D than your opponent. I hope that the advanced tutorial they eventually cook up covers more than the finer mechanical details, and helps people extrapolate the consequences of the mechanics and how that should impact their priorities in the game.
In league there is a principle that when you are ahead, play passive. your opponent will be the one losing since he already is behind if you just play passively. the one behind is forced to take risks. the only exception to that is when your team isn’t ahead. then you might take some risks to even the gap
As a league player for numerous years and high elo in OW. So many people have zero map awareness and lack the understanding of big picture. They truly forget about lane pressure. Lane pressure allows you freedom to do so much.
From my experience playing the game (with no experience of MOBAs in the past), it seems to me that souls are far more important than getting kills, because you can power up faster and become more deadly (and if you die, your opponent will outpace you). As such I poke at players while I wait for the minions health to get low, or hit them hard when they overextend, but I never go out of my way to put them down, even if their health is low (as I would have to overextend). With that being said, it is character specific, because some classes can heal themselves without having to retreat to their base. As such it becomes something of a learning curve to know when to move in for a kill or when to let them back off and keep farming souls. And this is why I like the game so much, you are constantly having to make judgements as to which is the best course of action. I've overextended many times and died trying to get the kill, and made the lane harder for myself, and other times I've forced the enemy player back to their base to heal, and got a nice soul advantage on them. I had a match the other day as Wraith vs McGinnis, and he would not leave me alone, he was ignoring the souls and the minions and solely focusing on me. Whereas I was out-farming him, he kept forcing me to retreat because my health was getting hazardous, and he kept pushing to kill me. It was getting on my nerves, but ultimately I won out in the end, because I started to overpower him once I upgraded my abilities, got my ult, improved my shop items etc. I've even got to the point where I only shoot the Guardians/Walkers when there is nothing else to shoot. If there are minions, I farm them instead of hitting the big target, and if there are players, I force them back and keep farming. Guess I just love getting the better upgrades before my opponents, which is nice. I love this game.
I feel like a key factor to remember is that there is so shame in running something I like to do is baiting a fight aka shooting being pushy then just leave so the entire hostile team decides chasing me is a free kill (I am already back at base or at the guardian) so no shame in running
Reassuring me with my playstyle lately. I've taken the attitude that more farming is almost always better than harassing and taking a fight. The real fights will just come like you said.
Part of me wonders if there's an efficiency curve to simply dying in lane for a full heal and returning to play super aggressive with the health in the first couple minutes of the game If you're ahead, farming out the enemy jungle is the way to go as it denies their safest farm and the respawn time is massive
the main point is the value system. the more kills you have (including kill streak) the more you are worth when you die. I had a bebop bully me early game. 8 deaths and only killed him once. but after he took my tower he never came back to lane. so i farmed all the creep spawns. the two behind me, the one net to me, the large one in the middle, his medium one, and his two behind his walker. by the time i joined the fray for teamfights, i was 5k ahead of bebop and would shut him down every fight. in the end I was 12-10-20 (k/d/a) and we won. a lot of people will bully early game trying to get early souls so they can go around ganking players. but forget there is more to this game than just killing heroes. as killing the enemy team doesn't net you a win, its not counter strike where wiping the team = win. in order to win you have to take their two base things, the patron, and then finally patron stage 2. if you can't do that, you lose. period. ive seen people with 30-40 kills and still lose. also rejuvenator doesn't matter either. I let them have it. i have legit won games where the enemy team got rejuv like 3-4 times and we still ended up destroying them. rejuv is more about the stronger creep waves. mainly for split pushing to gain ground. the enemy team would get rejuv but then still only do teamfights and not push towers/walkers. like derp. and those extra large creep waves gave us more money. so easy comeback money/souls wise.
I think your closing statement is a testament to why this game is so well designed. You can never turtle to victory with late game heroes. You must eventually push for the flex spots you need to get late game power spikes. Kudos to valve.
every time i try splitpushing while theres activity on the opposite end of the map i somehow immediately magnetically attract my teammates to my location so they can "help" me push & fight. i need to send them this video
another thing is, you can force advantagus fights. Push out the lanes and go mid boss. Enemies don't come? free mid boss! Enemies come, well now you can play a 6v6 fight with the team thats ahead having the advantage. And you don't even have to fight. Just back of and prevent them from taking mid boss, they will lose all the pushed up minions from their buildings and fall even further behind, while you kept farming. Also, try to abuse how splitpushing works. If 4 of your players push down 4 lanes, the enemies can't really just stack up and kill one, because they would lose way more than that kill brings. and if they try to engage in a 2v1, again now you are on the defending side, and the enemy doesn't know the position of 2 players, so the already behind enemies engage you can suprise 3v2 them. of course this takes coordination, but that stuff comes with the game getting older.
another thing to mention is getting kills while ahead has diminishing returns because of comeback mechanics, once when i was playing shiv i was on a 10 kill streak and was the highest net worth in the game, but every kill i got was worth 400-800 souls and when the enemies finally killed i was worth 3-4k souls because of my massive streak, so 1 kill on me was worth the same amount as me killing 3 or 4 enemies
Many non-moba players are treating this game like a raw shooter and its so annoying watching them hard feed then ask why everyone is "Wasting time farming" ITS A MOBA??? FARM?????
As someone who came from tf2, I was SUPER confused on why I kept dying in my first couple matching and getting no kills, not realizing my over-aggressive ass was handing the enemy team all the buffs needed to insta-kill me.
@@2pizza847 I mean, I find the gameplay loop of managing the resources of the camps and minions while also denying and fighting the enemy players pretty fun. It's a choice you have to make, do you lose some hp and time that could be used fighting the player, or keep your focus on them and lose the resources for the moment?
@@2pizza847 I'm guessing you've never played deadlock because farming is anything BUT braindead, the point is to get last hits in on enemy minions, so you have to time your shots carefully to make use of your own minion damage to get the most souls (the currency) out of em. If you do final hit a minion, half of the souls float up and if you're too slow the enemy player can steal that half, and you can do the same to them. The fun (and skill) comes from both damaging players and killing minions so you can destroy their guardians and grant yourself more souls to get stronger. If you're better than the enemy at the denial and collecting, you can offset a skill difference so newer players can still win if they play their cards right. Personally I very much enjoy this push and pull between pvp and pve, but you don't have to, just try something before deciding it's boring.

You can push the number of the ability while holding alt to upgrade it. I saw you use your mouse to select an ability to upgrade it at one point so I thought I'd mention it.
I feel the a big part of this issue is map clarity and team communication. Often I’ll have fights where both teams are fully grouped and poking at eachother. I’ll then see an opportunity to engage and dive in, (usually) calling it out on comms too. Even though the opener goes well and we get some picks, we inexplicably lose the fight. Of course then while waiting to respawn I realize half my team silently left to go farm, leaving us to die.
i think it's less of map clarity and more of players lack of map awareness and reading maps. As for team comms, yeah the system rn isn't really good at conveying comms to other teams member, your chat is delegated to the top and voice comms can be muted.
having some map control is also important not everyone can farm corner jungle all the time. being ready to help teammates or defend objectives without taking 20s to get there is important.
Keep in mind, many people you match up with have hardly played the game or it could even be their first match. I hardly ever have a challenge winning games because of this. So when I get bad teammates, and I'm actually versing a good team I don't get mad at them because the game is in early access and everyone is still learning. I got access to the game relatively early and have about 30 hours of gameplay which is probably much higher than the average player at the moment. Don't give your bad teammates a hard time. I usually try teaching them something they didn't know before the game ends.
This is very much in line with some matches i had, our team was behind in kills, by alot, im talking like, no one had a positive K/D, but eventually we still won because the lane control was there, and after 2 successful teamfights, despite lack of power, it quickly became a win. This happens quite alot too
You forget to mention that killing players creates a farm/lane pressure gap - if you kill a player and lose nothing, you get time to farm more minions and pressure lanes, while they lose farm and lane pressure and must spend their time out of respawn pushing waves out of towers/guardians. Kills in midgame mean you can go for enemy jungle camps and create an even larger farm gap. I do agree that you shouldn't take unfavorable fights but I do think that kills are one of the biggest ways you can snowball a small gap in farm and lane pressure into a bigger one. --- Finally, another counterpoint I want to mention is that if both teams stop fighting and just autopilot farm for 10 minutes, the team that is in the lead is losing their lead with every second. The more farmed both teams get, the smaller the soul gap becomes. A 10k soul gap when both teams average 12k worth of items is much, much bigger than a 15k soul gap when both teams average 40k worth of items. If your team is in the lead, they need to leverage that lead for picks and pushes and objectives. Letting the enemy team farm equally or near equally to yours is reducing your snowball, not increasing it.
Yeah, I feel that my teams usually suck at backing off, they just stand there and wait for a fight, and then they die Just go away, go farm, and then a team fight will happen, and now we can all go in at the same time Do not let the enemy pick when to engage, cause you will almost always be at a disadvantage You are not full health, your abilities and items are on cooldown, they get in the first cc and snowball the fight from there
While focusing on farm is always really good. But I would say it will make the game stall in higher MMR because of the lack of action and turn the whole match into a farming battle. I would say they need to add a first-blood reward in the future, so it forces a team to take risks to gain a souls advantage early on.
i like shoot gun at enemy player not minion
Unironically this is a valid criticism of the game though.
Kills don't give a lot especially early-mid game, while farm gives so much. It makes it feel a lot more like a PvE game than PvP at times.
@@akitake_ welcome to mobas
@@akitake_ is it really valid criticism? i feel like its an opinion people can have, but its not like thats an objective downside. in essence its still a moba.
what is a big part of dying early on is having to use ur zipboost early or losing out on a lot of souls.
by killing the enemy the soul gap is larger because you can crash in the wave and the enemy misses them.
PLUS you dont need to zipboost back to lane depending on wavestate
and pressuring ur enemy and denying waves still is very active in this game imo, which makes it interesting and not "boring" or makes it feel liek a pve game at all
@@ZeeSnippy I completely understand that, I still have the opinion that the Kill to Farm balance is a bit too skewed towards farming.
@@akitake_ That's just how mobas work, they're more skewed towards strategy than tactics.
It's so easy to get carried away with the shooter mechanics and think I can just outplay and kill everyone, I gotta constantly remind myself that I'm playing Dota
If only the shooting wasn't so much fun.

@@cerulean5032 not that good clearing cause has low damage at the start when you need it most
@@ByDav1Zz Yeah, but in the start you usually would prefer to stay in lane anyways to deny the enemy their farm. Ideally you'd only start clearing camps once you've destroyed the enemy guardian, and you can give yourself much more time by shoving all the way into their walker.
Once Yamato gets to that point, she has plenty of damage for at least small and medium camps.
@@cerulean5032 so now we have a different theme. Ty pal dont need you to tell me how to lane.
I actually like how easily the matches can turn around. Your team could be 20k behind, win one big fight and the gap is reduced to a couple thousands.
This is awesome when the team uses their brain and fights in an advantageous position.
More often than not you'll have one or two people in voice comms begging to teamfight whatever the cost, jumping on the first person they see with very little map awareness.
And they end up losing fight after fight and blaming the rest of the team for it.
That's valve balancing. That's why Dota games are so entertaining to watch, that's why TI has so many iconic moments.
its basically like dota
I have never seen this. My team is usually 20k+ behind and can end the game 50k behind.

OMG the Abrams clip into the Wraith's stream after was so funny
It's even better from the side of the Overwatch community because Metro is the guy who sucks at games but is carried by his aim lol.
@@nick-0579spot on
Enemy Abrams teaches you how parrying works, or he teaches you that you are bad at parrying and need to develop spatial awareness.
either works...

I felt bad for playing passively not engaging into 3v4 fights just farming etc
I LOVE seeing non moba players love this game. I hope this game thrives! Good luck out there. Glad you are enjoying your time
@@burndlymy friend does that a lot and it's always the optimal strategy in the end. Engaging in a fight where you won't help is just a bad decision
i have never heard anyone talk about this, but something very different about this moba is that there is no passive currency generation at all. you only get souls from doing things which are killing minions, wisps, neutral camps, opening boxes, delivering the urn, or securing kills or objectives. a lot of players spend way too much time trying to damage other players to secure a kill, and since you only get the souls when you actually secure one, it is often a huge risk to try to go for them constantly because it likely means you are missing out at getting an advantage from getting more souls elsewhere.
Yeah, as a league player one of the things I keep being tricked by is the fact I don't have passive income, so I might rotate around the map, not farm much and be surprised I don't have enough currency still.
@@MenwithHill learning the camp timers and their locations will help a lot
@@potofblack I really should do that, especially cause it seems nobody farms them at my MMR until like 40min.
The tutorial is severely lacking, I don't even know what jungles or camps even are and I still don't know what the midboss does.
As an FPS player, I've never played a MOBA in my life, so I agree with this 😅
@@zapcat6029mid boss gives your entire team a 3 minute buff which includes: 50% one time respawn reduction (lost on death), 50% increased minion health, and increased fire rate.
No way Metro went from being farmed in OW to being farmed in Deadlock 😆

@@Toxic-yt8pe No, we all knew.
I never thought Id see the guy again after moving on from playing and watching Overwatch but damn is it funny seeing him pop up in this vid
This is a big thing that I've been playing with the mindset of that I've taken from playing league previous and that is
Making the enemy back off is EQUALLY as valuable as actually getting the kill on them.
A lot of the time it's better to leave them low HP and back than to dive a tower to get the kill (but give them your life in return)
It feels wrong but it's the right thing to do.
@@akitake_ It's more valuable. Farm has always been more valuable. More farm means more econ means faster access to better items means more kills and objectives taken means win.
2:52 Metro never changes😭
Lost/won several games where 50 minutes long one team was in the lead but one bad team fight and long respawn timers meant flipping the whole game.
that push as 6 is how i lose 90% of my games I SWEAR.
that wraith player 😭😭😭
That is metro for you
You have really helped to improve my skills with your previous videos, and it shows - this video is going to up my game even more! Thank you!
That Metro clip caught me off guard so bad 😭
That map zoom-in at 10:41 is the perfect encapsulation of how it feels sometimes playing Deadlock and likely any MOBA.
That Infernus single-handedly inspired this video 😂. Great info of course. Keep em coming.

Abrams guide soon, got no friends, neither has my goon.

I have been watching your vids since The division 1, glad to see you have fun in other games, Love your channel!
That's every MOBA. It's a team game. EGOS lose games, no matter if Deadlock, Dota 2 or League.
@3:47 shit like this hurts my soul when watching people just leave golden statues up , people always sleep on such easy advantages
I think a perfect video playlist one could watch to get an idea on the advantages of playing defensive in mobas, is Alois "League fundamentals"
Since he talks more about the logic behind laning with minions and using shoves and crashes to buy time and items.

Well explained, thank you. I felt like I had payed more attention to the hero shooter part of the game rather than the moba part
Really appreciate the Video. This is my first time playing a Moba and you really helped me understand the basics. At first I was playing this game like a typical shooter and i got destroyed everytime wondering why i do so little damage and the opponent always is a bulletsponge. I might not have gotten better but atleast I know now why I suck xD
fantastic video, and there aren't many people making tips guides like this instead of just talking over vods
Nice one ! Another big issue i see is people not converting good fights into objectives.. when ahead and if your tean gets 3/4 kills that can eadily mean a walker push or urn before they respawn. After they respawn then we can split up and shove lanes/ take jungles / put pressure
As a long time overwatch player, I was thoroughly delighted to see a salty Metro clip

God I hate Metro. shitting up overwatch 2 comp wasn't enough for this guy
At the end of the day, this is still a Moba and these are fundamentals in this genre of games.
When to push , knowing which fights you can take, how to make space (allowing for a sneaky split push).
Great job highlighting these points and to the uninformed, again, welcome to MOBAs!
Many players who need to see this unfortunately won't watch this video but even so you're doing a service to the community good job.
Recently had my first 60k soul game as Lady geised
damn actually banger video learned more here than in any other one of the vids i watched so far
Very good guide. These are foundational principles of MOBA strategy that newcomers need to hear.
I also notice everyone over-stays after a good push. Giving back souls after an ace and a good push.
I really think AP lead is a bigger deal than soul lead,
Abilities on higher levels have more power than some items and can change the whole dynamic of a team fight
Could really use a video that is opposite of this, IE, what to do when you lose all your lanes and have to play with a disadvantage
11:40 idk if it's a coincidence, or planned, but if you actually know the literal range of the walker's slam range and managed to just tip toe around it, that's insane 💀
Knowing the slam distance is pretty important. You'll definitely have that mastered after 500 hours, it isn't that crazy.
The solution I've found with this is trying to farm closer to my teammate(s) who I predict will feed, so I can potentially contribute some damage or abilities to the fight. I won't do anything risky, I'll only fight from a safe range with an escape plan, and without compromising my farm or lane pushing.
Mmm, I love the upload schedule
I always like to probe from a safe distance. It lets me gauge how much damage they're doing, waste their abilities, and maintain better ground. Then, dive in and block their exits, and hopefully take the kill if not simply scaring them off for a while.
One thing that confused me a bit is the way the game decides to put you in a lane. Is there support, adc, etc that the game chooses to lane you against. Or is it just random
no roles in deadlock
10:41, theoretically blue lanes souls aren't wasted, even if you kill the minions, at one point you will have to retreat. It's either get the 400 now or later, difference being if you get them at the enemies side, where you can get ganked, or your side. I have learned that, if you aren't pushing, it's best to push till mid and just farm on your side, that way you don't get surrounded. The souls are wasted if towers get involved, because then the soul loss doesn't equalize between the minions. Same applies if you have an bigger minion army, then it pushes through more waves than an equal amount would do, making you loose souls too
Did you just parry a guardian at 2:33? I didn't even know that was possible
As a FPS player your videos are helping me a lot as an introduction to MOBAs so thanks
Part of me wonders if there's an efficiency curve to simply dying in lane for a full heal and returning to play super aggressive with the health in the first couple minutes of the game
If you're ahead, farming out the enemy jungle is the way to go as it denies their safest farm and the respawn time is massive
the main point is the value system. the more kills you have (including kill streak) the more you are worth when you die.
Great advice. Good to expose people to this different mindset
Metro not being able to deal with Abram’s parry mind games is so funny.
I think your closing statement is a testament to why this game is so well designed. You can never turtle to victory with late game heroes. You must eventually push for the flex spots you need to get late game power spikes. Kudos to valve.
It's like you're reading out of Art of War. Very good video :)
every time i try splitpushing while theres activity on the opposite end of the map i somehow immediately magnetically attract my teammates to my location so they can "help" me push & fight. i need to send them this video

Didn’t expect that cameo
another thing is, you can force advantagus fights.
As an Abrams enjoyer
you should unbind your parry key now
Many non-moba players are treating this game like a raw shooter and its so annoying watching them hard feed then ask why everyone is "Wasting time farming"
ITS A MOBA??? FARM?????
As someone who came from tf2, I was SUPER confused on why I kept dying in my first couple matching and getting no kills, not realizing my over-aggressive ass was handing the enemy team all the buffs needed to insta-kill me.
Moba players when they hear abouth the idea of the fact that videogames are meant to HAVE FUN:
Farming isn't fun. Especially in sloplock.
@@thunderspark1536 choice between fun and boring and unengaging braindead farm
Are there any other creators with similar high quality videos that I should watch alongside yours?
I've watched all of your videos today and I'm loving them
I haven't played yet (am away from home) but the excitement is continually building.
Looking forward to more, and more advanced, content in the future.
There's been some natural overlap of content but some small or new content creators that are worth checking out if you are looking to improve are:
www.youtube.com/@Schizug
www.youtube.com/@Deathy
www.youtube.com/@VegasDL
None of them I think have as much experience editing videos but all of them provide reliable and accurate info and tips when it comes to high level play and they are worth checking out for sure.
As for team comms, yeah the system rn isn't really good at conveying comms to other teams member, your chat is delegated to the top and voice comms can be muted.
start to the video was absolutely diabolical tysm for the great video tho
having some map control is also important not everyone can farm corner jungle all the time. being ready to help teammates or defend objectives without taking 20s to get there is important.

Finally, another counterpoint I want to mention is that if both teams stop fighting and just autopilot farm for 10 minutes, the team that is in the lead is losing their lead with every second.
Yeah, I feel that my teams usually suck at backing off, they just stand there and wait for a fight, and then they die
Just go away, go farm, and then a team fight will happen, and now we can all go in at the same time
Do not let the enemy pick when to engage, cause you will almost always be at a disadvantage
You are not full health, your abilities and items are on cooldown, they get in the first cc and snowball the fight from there
While focusing on farm is always really good. But I would say it will make the game stall in higher MMR because of the lack of action and turn the whole match into a farming battle. I would say they need to add a first-blood reward in the future, so it forces a team to take risks to gain a souls advantage early on.
I go for these kinds of plays too often, but I just say I'm limit testing and it's all good
0:14 WTF is this, I've never seen a game with 9 players having over 40k souls 😅
People who know what is going on rather than the overwatch goons trying to fight nonstop
