what is a big part of dying early on is having to use ur zipboost early or losing out on a lot of souls.
by killing the enemy the soul gap is larger because you can crash in the wave and the enemy misses them.
PLUS you dont need to zipboost back to lane depending on wavestate
and pressuring ur enemy and denying waves still is very active in this game imo, which makes it interesting and not "boring" or makes it feel liek a pve game at all

Many players need to hear this. A lot don't understand any of what's explained in this video and focus on fighting way too much with VERY LITTLE map awareness, and end up being outnumbered in enemy territory, dying, and giving the advantage back to them instead of shoving lanes (which will slowly eat away towers on its own if undefended AND make the enemy miss last hits) and clearing the jungle COMPLETELY. If you don't clear out the jungle you're leaving souls on the table that could be used for items. An efficient jungle is one that's respawning as often as possible.

This is strategy fundamentals for any MOBA, and sometimes even league of legends pros fall into the must-teamfight-trap mindset. All of what you've said, basically is what LS(former starcraft pro, league coach, streamer) has been harping on for years and years and still being ostracized for his opinions. He was a Terran player on starcraft, and his main strategy is slowly suffocate the enemy and leave them no room to breathe until they make a huge blunder and capitalize on it.
Essentially, when playing from behind, it's the same thing. Try to avoid team fights as much as possible and try to reach item breakpoints before re-engaging on huge objectives.

i have never heard anyone talk about this, but something very different about this moba is that there is no passive currency generation at all. you only get souls from doing things which are killing minions, wisps, neutral camps, opening boxes, delivering the urn, or securing kills or objectives. a lot of players spend way too much time trying to damage other players to secure a kill, and since you only get the souls when you actually secure one, it is often a huge risk to try to go for them constantly because it likely means you are missing out at getting an advantage from getting more souls elsewhere.

Making the enemy back off is EQUALLY as valuable as actually getting the kill on them.
Especially in this game as there isn't a very fast way to get back to base so honestly, you could have MORE pressure on the lane or more time to roam and get others kills if you force the enemy to back off instead of getting that kill in particular.

    • @akitake_

Yup. 10+ years of league and a lot of players still don't get this there either. Getting your enemy so low they have to back off and leave you to free-farm is almost just as valuable as getting the kill.

I've been part of MANY Deadlock matches where our start was horrendous - yet we manage to retreat & group up at base at the right moments to give the opposing team a bad time.
Maybe this will change once the community gets better at the game as a whole, but as of right now, games can incredibly easily swing in one direction or the other and it makes every moment of a match exciting !
Sometimes even 20-30minutes in, the winner still cannot easily be determined - unlike my other experiences with MOBAs, where a match can last 30-45min, and you know its been lost since the 15minute mark.

A strategy theory when it comes to games is that if you have an advantage you should be playing to maintain that advantage which means playing safe and not giving the enemy team an opportunity to come back.
The opposite is true if you are lossing, if you are badly lossing you and at a disadvantage (in an ideal sense and people aren't throwing away leads etc) this is when you you should try unconventional means and risky tactics to try and gain back an advantage. All of that assuming there isn't some swing factor and people are playing perfectly that sort of thing.
This video is honestly one of the few places i have seen that verbalized pretty well or at least close to that idea.
Is it kind of boring? It can be yeah but the way to win when you have an advantage is to play to maintain it and hunting for fights and stuff is hunting for chances to give the enemy an out of disadvantage

And as guides for characters become more robust and fine tuned, so will your confidence in character "online" timings become. Which is to say the time your character should be active and looking to equalize or set up ganks and pushes for lanes. As a Shiv main that helped me to reconnect that in my mind. Since really the only way I get rolled on Shiv is if I am locked down or just can’t get close enough, if I can play my position and timing better by split pushing more and picking my fights I think I can win even more games.
Thanks for helping me realize I should focus on even more split pushing and the jungle. I am feel my CoD instincts fading away and now I’m leaning back to BF. Kills are fun but not the point. I rather win with 10 kills than lose with 25.

You roam when you have shoved your lane under enemy tower and you don't have any way to kill your enemy laner that is free of risk. Ideally you'd push the minions under the enemy walker, but even just shoving into their guardian is enough if you play a character that can clear jungle camps fast enough. As of when in the game you do this? That depeonds on the character and which items you have. Some characters clear better than others, and can therefore afford jungle camps earlier in the game.
If your opposing laner is being passive, yet also staying healthy and keeping their towers from taking too much damage, it might be worth investing into items that help you clear camps more efficiently, so you can capitalize on camps more, and getting a soul lead that way instead of through towers and kills.

The thing i love most about deadlock is the tug of war aspect, the fact that everything you do matters and even a game that seems like an easy win or a crushing defeat can be turned around if the losing team starts putting in work and pulling things back to their advantage

I think a perfect video playlist one could watch to get an idea on the advantages of playing defensive in mobas, is Alois "League fundamentals"
Since he talks more about the logic behind laning with minions and using shoves and crashes to buy time and items. While always being safe to farm since the enemy minions are approaching your tower, and not vice versa.

I finished 15 7 and 10 with two walker(both 3/4 plus dmg done) and guardian takedowns.. we lost but i was blamed for not being at every team fight.. even at minute 4 when i killed my guardian and player and was currently getting enemy jungle.. not an ego post at all.. i was questioning if i truly was playing it wrong since two of my teammates (who werent the low souls) were constantly crying..

The solution I've found with this is trying to farm closer to my teammate(s) who I predict will feed, so I can potentially contribute some damage or abilities to the fight. I won't do anything risky, I'll only fight from a safe range with an escape plan, and without compromising my farm or lane pushing.

10:41, theoretically blue lanes souls aren't wasted, even if you kill the minions, at one point you will have to retreat. It's either get the 400 now or later, difference being if you get them at the enemies side, where you can get ganked, or your side. I have learned that, if you aren't pushing, it's best to push till mid and just farm on your side, that way you don't get surrounded. The souls are wasted if towers get involved, because then the soul loss doesn't equalize between the minions. Same applies if you have an bigger minion army, then it pushes through more waves than an equal amount would do, making you loose souls too

I think a lot of the player mentality that runs counter to this and explains why so many people don't coordinate like this is assumptions based off of their previous experience with other games like TF2 or Overwatch, where having a player advantage in a teamfight can be way more impactful than it is in deadlock, and pushing objectives is the main thing you do outside of the teamfights. most players don't immediately extrapolate the soul mechanics into prioritizing earning more from things like the jungle or occupying every lane for a power advantage, especially because in so many other games that players are going to be coming from that same kind of advantage is primarily or only earned through a higher K/D than your opponent. I hope that the advanced tutorial they eventually cook up covers more than the finer mechanical details, and helps people extrapolate the consequences of the mechanics and how that should impact their priorities in the game.

In league there is a principle that when you are ahead, play passive.
your opponent will be the one losing since he already is behind if you just play passively.
the one behind is forced to take risks.
the only exception to that is when your team isn’t ahead.

  • @zalamael

From my experience playing the game (with no experience of MOBAs in the past), it seems to me that souls are far more important than getting kills, because you can power up faster and become more deadly (and if you die, your opponent will outpace you). As such I poke at players while I wait for the minions health to get low, or hit them hard when they overextend, but I never go out of my way to put them down, even if their health is low (as I would have to overextend).
With that being said, it is character specific, because some classes can heal themselves without having to retreat to their base. As such it becomes something of a learning curve to know when to move in for a kill or when to let them back off and keep farming souls. And this is why I like the game so much, you are constantly having to make judgements as to which is the best course of action. I've overextended many times and died trying to get the kill, and made the lane harder for myself, and other times I've forced the enemy player back to their base to heal, and got a nice soul advantage on them.
I had a match the other day as Wraith vs McGinnis, and he would not leave me alone, he was ignoring the souls and the minions and solely focusing on me. Whereas I was out-farming him, he kept forcing me to retreat because my health was getting hazardous, and he kept pushing to kill me. It was getting on my nerves, but ultimately I won out in the end, because I started to overpower him once I upgraded my abilities, got my ult, improved my shop items etc.
I've even got to the point where I only shoot the Guardians/Walkers when there is nothing else to shoot. If there are minions, I farm them instead of hitting the big target, and if there are players, I force them back and keep farming. Guess I just love getting the better upgrades before my opponents, which is nice. I love this game.

Part of me wonders if there's an efficiency curve to simply dying in lane for a full heal and returning to play super aggressive with the health in the first couple minutes of the game
If you're ahead, farming out the enemy jungle is the way to go as it denies their safest farm and the respawn time is massive

  • @goblinphreak2132
    @goblinphreak2132 Месяц назад

the main point is the value system. the more kills you have (including kill streak) the more you are worth when you die. I had a bebop bully me early game. 8 deaths and only killed him once. but after he took my tower he never came back to lane. so i farmed all the creep spawns. the two behind me, the one net to me, the large one in the middle, his medium one, and his two behind his walker. by the time i joined the fray for teamfights, i was 5k ahead of bebop and would shut him down every fight. in the end I was 12-10-20 (k/d/a) and we won. a lot of people will bully early game trying to get early souls so they can go around ganking players. but forget there is more to this game than just killing heroes. as killing the enemy team doesn't net you a win, its not counter strike where wiping the team = win. in order to win you have to take their two base things, the patron, and then finally patron stage 2. if you can't do that, you lose. period. ive seen people with 30-40 kills and still lose. also rejuvenator doesn't matter either. I let them have it. i have legit won games where the enemy team got rejuv like 3-4 times and we still ended up destroying them. rejuv is more about the stronger creep waves. mainly for split pushing to gain ground. the enemy team would get rejuv but then still only do teamfights and not push towers/walkers. like derp. and those extra large creep waves gave us more money. so easy comeback money/souls wise.

another thing is, you can force advantagus fights. Push out the lanes and go mid boss. Enemies don't come? free mid boss! Enemies come, well now you can play a 6v6 fight with the team thats ahead having the advantage. And you don't even have to fight. Just back of and prevent them from taking mid boss, they will lose all the pushed up minions from their buildings and fall even further behind, while you kept farming. Also, try to abuse how splitpushing works. If 4 of your players push down 4 lanes, the enemies can't really just stack up and kill one, because they would lose way more than that kill brings. and if they try to engage in a 2v1, again now you are on the defending side, and the enemy doesn't know the position of 2 players, so the already behind enemies engage you can suprise 3v2 them. of course this takes coordination, but that stuff comes with the game getting older.

  • @johnsmith-th9jj

another thing to mention is getting kills while ahead has diminishing returns because of comeback mechanics, once when i was playing shiv i was on a 10 kill streak and was the highest net worth in the game, but every kill i got was worth 400-800 souls and when the enemies finally killed i was worth 3-4k souls because of my massive streak, so 1 kill on me was worth the same amount as me killing 3 or 4 enemies

@@2pizza847 I'm guessing you've never played deadlock because farming is anything BUT braindead, the point is to get last hits in on enemy minions, so you have to time your shots carefully to make use of your own minion damage to get the most souls (the currency) out of em.
If you do final hit a minion, half of the souls float up and if you're too slow the enemy player can steal that half, and you can do the same to them.
The fun (and skill) comes from both damaging players and killing minions so you can destroy their guardians and grant yourself more souls to get stronger.
If you're better than the enemy at the denial and collecting, you can offset a skill difference so newer players can still win if they play their cards right.
Personally I very much enjoy this push and pull between pvp and pve, but you don't have to, just try something before deciding it's boring.

I feel the a big part of this issue is map clarity and team communication.
Often I’ll have fights where both teams are fully grouped and poking at eachother. I’ll then see an opportunity to engage and dive in, (usually) calling it out on comms too. Even though the opener goes well and we get some picks, we inexplicably lose the fight. Of course then while waiting to respawn I realize half my team silently left to go farm, leaving us to die.

Keep in mind, many people you match up with have hardly played the game or it could even be their first match. I hardly ever have a challenge winning games because of this. So when I get bad teammates, and I'm actually versing a good team I don't get mad at them because the game is in early access and everyone is still learning. I got access to the game relatively early and have about 30 hours of gameplay which is probably much higher than the average player at the moment. Don't give your bad teammates a hard time. I usually try teaching them something they didn't know before the game ends.

This is very much in line with some matches i had, our team was behind in kills, by alot, im talking like, no one had a positive K/D, but eventually we still won because the lane control was there, and after 2 successful teamfights, despite lack of power, it quickly became a win. This happens quite alot too

  • @VortexMagus
    @VortexMagus 2 месяца назад

You forget to mention that killing players creates a farm/lane pressure gap - if you kill a player and lose nothing, you get time to farm more minions and pressure lanes, while they lose farm and lane pressure and must spend their time out of respawn pushing waves out of towers/guardians.
Kills in midgame mean you can go for enemy jungle camps and create an even larger farm gap.
I do agree that you shouldn't take unfavorable fights but I do think that kills are one of the biggest ways you can snowball a small gap in farm and lane pressure into a bigger one.
    ---
Finally, another counterpoint I want to mention is that if both teams stop fighting and just autopilot farm for 10 minutes, the team that is in the lead is losing their lead with every second. The more farmed both teams get, the smaller the soul gap becomes.
A 10k soul gap when both teams average 12k worth of items is much, much bigger than a 15k soul gap when both teams average 40k worth of items.
If your team is in the lead, they need to leverage that lead for picks and pushes and objectives. Letting the enemy team farm equally or near equally to yours is reducing your snowball, not increasing it.

Yeah, I feel that my teams usually suck at backing off, they just stand there and wait for a fight, and then they die
Just go away, go farm, and then a team fight will happen, and now we can all go in at the same time
Do not let the enemy pick when to engage, cause you will almost always be at a disadvantage
You are not full health, your abilities and items are on cooldown, they get in the first cc and snowball the fight from there

While focusing on farm is always really good. But I would say it will make the game stall in higher MMR because of the lack of action and turn the whole match into a farming battle. I would say they need to add a first-blood reward in the future, so it forces a team to take risks to gain a souls advantage early on.
