"I just want dumb stuff, and, that's what's important to me."
- The Man Himself Uncle Derek
😁
I go to the one local retro game convention once a year and that's where I get most of my collection. I'm well aware that the prices are ripoffs 99% of the time which is why I keep away from collecting the rest of the year, but the experience of being able to walk around a giant showroom floor full of nothing but cool stuff like that and randomly stumbling across something that catches my eye is well worth it to me.
I got a chuckle out of Derek saying he collects Just Dance. I work at Value Village where my job is to sort/price books and media. I get so many copies of Just Dance I need to make a drinking game out of it.
Game RUclipsrs are keeping IKEA in business with all those Billy shelves 😜
That and also IKEA furniture is cheap. Most of my furniture in my apartment is IKEA because it's what I can afford and it looks somewhat decent.
And vinyl collectors keep the Kallax in infinite production. Cheap and just right size!
@@johnmickey5017 I store mine in a Billy interestingly.
I LOVE Ikea for my collection. The bang for the buck with their bookcases is amazing. I pickup a new Billy Bookcase (the one you can close with glass doors that keep the dust out) about once per year for my game collection. You can still get them for only around $200 each, but they look like $500+ bookcases. They can easily fit a few hundred games on them and are very easy to put together.
@@ashkitt7719 They are very cheap, but they also don't have a cheap look about them at all. I've had people look at my collection and they thought my $200'ish Billy Bookcases were $500+ bookcases. Also very sturdy. You can pack a surprising amount of weight on their shelves with no problem.
No better way to start the weekend than with a new SSFF vídeo! ✨
No better way to start my night shift than with a new SSFF video! Oh, and by doing my job and stuff I guess...
Such a fun video. I love how you don’t just collect to collect but you collect whatever you want
I can’t express how much of the I LOVE DUMB STUFF sentiment connects with me and I’m sure many others in a way I could never verbalize till I found your lovely channel.
Man i dont know what it is, but watching your guys' videos really just brighten my day. It really is awesome to see what you guys do what you do and your MTV Cribz really sated my curiosity of how you guys do all of it in your living space.
Are you kidding? I remember listening to starship amazing in high school a decade ago, and this is how I found out that Derek is also this Derek. What the hell.

Cool setup.
I'm a HVAC technician and if you're worried about the humidity I would strongly suggest an active dehumidifier.
I live at the west coast of Norway and I can pull about a liter of moisture from the air every day.
In Norway they cost about 200-300$ so I'm expecting it to be somewhat cheaper in the US.
Most models let you set your preferred humidity level (around 30-40% is recommended).
Some models even auto drains the water if you have a drainhole nearby.
Here in the US you can get one for under $150 easily. There are models with pumps that can push the water up several feet to drain into a sink, like in Derek’s unused bathroom.
The way you got your Reggie signature is the exact same way I got a photo with Jack Black at a Tenacious D show in 2001. Only it was with a film camera and when I got it developed he was flipping me off.
I'd love to hear you and Scott Wozniac compare and contrast your collecting priorities and gripes. Perhaps a future podcast?
A couple of years ago my town got a small thrift store and they have a set price for dvds and video games, they're all 1 dollar doesn't matter what the thing is. although they don't often get games the first time i went there they had paper mario: the thousand-year door and to this day it's still the best purchase i made.
I've actually paused your videos so many times during camera shots just to see your collection! Thank you for the insightful video ♥
I just finished re organizing all my game shelves with the double stacking trick you explained in this video. Genius move, i have so much more space now for my collection to grow. Thanks for the tip👍
I am so happy that you still have the burger glasses. I doubt you'll remember, but I was actually the one who sent those to you all those years ago and it genuinely makes me smile that they're still around in the background after all these years!
The thrill of the hunt and finding weird things is what I loved most about collecting, but as you said sadly a lot of the deals and finds have dried up in recent years.
I now try to mostly only ever get games at conventions.
What a Guy 😎Your attitude and youtube persona are so damn refreshing in this shitstorm of a modern world. Keep it up HVGN!
This is great stuff as always D! I hope to do a room tour video someday when I have my collection set up. I mean, man, I just got so much Waterworld (1995) merch, it needs to be seen!
I simply was just watching your Konami beat-em up delisted video (SHEER MINUTES AGO), thinking "I wonder what their game room looks like." Then finding this and it being two hours old.
What delightful (and fateful) circumstances!
Back in 2018, I got myself a cheap media shelf, and although it wasn’t the best it was quite helpful in growing my slowly expanding game collection, I’m glad I got it out of the storage and got my mom’s cousin to help me fix it, cause with how my gaming collection is now, it would be hard to just keep in place that Isn’t a nice shelf .
Man this really makes me wish i still had all my old games. All my Saturn, Mega Drive and Dreamcast stuff, i had SOOOO many Dreamcast games (SKies of Arcadia, Power Stone 1+2, CvS 2) But about a decade ago i was on really hard times and just had to sell almost all my old stuff. Now that i'm in a much better place i really wanna get back on my Dreamcast collection!
Start collecting again. I had rough times, but never had to sell. Now it's going so well I buy stuff I could never dream of buying
How I collect games in 2022: I stopped, and started sailing the seas of emulation. After 2020, normal people wanting to pay $10 for a 20 year old game got pushed out by investors
Steam Deck has absolutely replaced the way I collect/play retro games. Emulating on the Deck is fantastic, plus I've saved so much space in my physical collection.
Yeah, I can’t do physical games any more since switching to digital for new stuff/emulation for old stuff. I realized a bit ago that collecting stuff is fun, but also really stresses me out. I’d rather play games than worry too much about owning games in good condition, having complete sets of stuff, etc, but it’s still cool to see the collections of other people!
mister for ps1/saturn and below. wii for gamecube wii and n64 plus a modded ps2. Covers most everything i need
Same, I had a really large collection, most of it's gone now but I still have all the machines, struggling to part with them for some reason....and there's a lot. But I realized that I had all these games and barely played them, it was effectively just pointless shit on a shelf, it was a bit of a relief to start selling it off
All of these “hidden gems” scalpers on eBay ruined retro gaming collection.
I like your relationship advice. It shows you guys care a lot about each other.
After considering various media shelves, I ended up just building my own custom bookcases with adjustable shelves. It took a while, but it was a fun DIY project, and I was able to make it the exact depth I needed. Though when it came to the TV stand I just went and bought one from Big Lots. LOL
I love this because it reminds me of why I got back into collecting, and started selling off a bunch of things I kept hanging on to because of no other reason but collector value. I'm starting my N-gage collection now, and the fact that it's such a weird system makes it more special to me even if its worthless by conventional collector standards. Its just refreshing to see people collect stuff to play and not just to horde.
Also I have that Doom cover art too. I have no idea where I got it.
The fact that Uncle Derek didn't take the stud finder and point it at himself while making a beeping sound kind of saddened me.
I love how you double stacked those book shelves. I've been looking at my shelves trying to figure out if I need to do something or put something in storage but you just solved my issue! I'm taking empty tissue containers and putting cardboard on top to build my risers but it's the same concept and it's costing me nothing because I'm using stuff I already have on hand. Just gotta blow my nose a lot more to generate all the boxes I'm going to need!
I NEED to see Derek’s hardcore/emo collection
me too
Love to see casual Derek and The Deuce just talking about their apartment.
This video made me happy and gave me ideas for my own space.
I go with common convention, moving beginning articles to the end following a comma.
Awesome! Though the video cuts off abruptly at the end. Thanks for all that you do!
I back Producer Grace 100%
“The” is part of the title, full stop.
Thanks for sharing! It is great to see a great collection with so many stories. It's like how I like to build my collection. I find this way more interesting vs just showing big walls of tons of games for no reason other than to have them. Those collections are cool in their own way but your stories make it special.
the visit from the puppy was the best part of this video.
TWO DOGS!!!!
“The” of my games and movies go in the “T” section as it’s just the easiest for me lol.
I was amused by the Just Dance collection for it being out of left field. I have a subcollection like that building currently of PS2 2000s pop culture games. So far it has Mary Kate & Ashley's Sweet 16, MTV Pimp My Ride Street Racing, Crazy Frog Racer, and Pop Idol. They're all god awful but remind me of a simpler time.
3:46 The Xbox Live Arcade disc for the OG Xbox did go online. The disc was a storefront that connected to its Xbox Live game server to sell you games on the disc. People forget that the OG Xbox dashboard did not contain a store app, so games and DLC had to be sold via the stores that came with the games.
I got a copy of Kuon back in 2015 at a used games store complete in box with manual for $70 when it was going for $600 online at the time and is now like, $900 at the lowest.
Been waiting for this for years!
My dude!! That Jumping Flash music!! Around 10 minutes in. I never see any content about that beautiful series anymore
That bit about unique things in greatist hits versions of games sounds like a neat video idea.
Taken me much too long to become a patron
12:38 "you couldn't walk in my shoes you couldn't handle this" 🤣🤣
Always enjoy the more casual videos, love seein' all them GAMES
I love Derek's Lollipop Chainsaw shirt there, I'm kinda jealous. Hehe.
17:20: A lesson to James Rolfe (AVGN) to know how to use proper drilling tools to drill through tough 80s wood. Along with him tying a tripod to the ceiling and not using visual effects when tying himself with an onion.
Having the heater be behind the doom games is perfect theming
Ikea really is amazing for storing game collections. They make shelves/bookcases for seemingly every style and room, which are very affordable, look great, are sturdy, and easy to put together. For my collection, I typically add an enclosed Billy Bookcase about once a year. They look great, have glass doors that keep a lot of the dust out, can hold a few hundred games each, and can be found for only around $200 on sale.
This is why we love this channel. You're so fun to watch. I love the fact yall used Kinect Adventure music in this video.
I have the *exact same* shelf setup. I use wood joining blocks on the top of the units to keep them together. Each block has a number of different holes in various orientations. I put one block on the front and one on the back, and a screw through each block into each unit.
I've also got some sets of the shelves backing on to each other, so you can walk around them and get to it from either side.
As someone living in a very humid climate, for your closet, please get a cheap humidity meter and if it's high (over 60% is high IMO), and get an electric one. It may be expensive (few hundreds for a big xiaomi one) but it would be much worse if your games, cameras, etc. caught any fungus or corrosion.
I have the same sort of shelves for my stuff, what I did was drill through the peg holes, slide a bolt through one side, and slap a nut on it.
Keeps everything together nice and tight, and is small enough not to be obtrusive.
This was so much fun!!! Loved the tour!!
It all looks so cool!
lol, This all looks so great!
The little gap in-between the book cases bugged me when I had them too. Lowes sells "Ornamental Moulding" which some have really cool textures and are probably light enough to be mounted between the bookcases using mounting tape over those little areas where the bookcases sit against each other, you can probably paint them some cool neon colors and stuff too, or just paint them white. They're pretty cheap and they're usually sold in 8ft increments so they'll cover floor to ceiling pretty easily, if not they can be easily cut with a hand saw. Just something I did back in the day, sorry for the long comment lol.
I totally get being able to clock out and leave when you work from home. But I've spent so many hours in there for work, I don't want to do any fun stuff in my home office. And i spent so much time designing and building my desk, refinishing the original oak floor, and planning all my wall art and display cabinets. Now i can't stand being in there off hours. It just raises my blood pressure being in there.
T counts
Now the real alphabetizer's dilemma
Jak And Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
Jak II
Jak 3
how are those three alphabetized?
Tick-tock, uncle Derek
The game room looks good. Always nice to have a Grace sighting in your videos!
I'm glad you liked it enough to keep it all these years. :)
*noticing Playdate in the background* I'm stoked to hear SSFF's take on that some day, whether in a video or not
Finally a tour video 💯
Great video, always a pleasure to hang with Uncle Derek & producer Grace
this man is passionate about his tools! Great fun video
"Don't let anything ever come between you and your partner... except your video game collection."
Spoken like a true gamer. I can't tell you how many stories I've heard of people selling parts of or entire collections due to a relationship and then regretting it later. If they're not down with the collection, it's a sign to move on and find someone that is.
I usually think gameroom tours are cheap content...like the clip shows of gaming youtube...but...this was thoroughly amazing.
Sorting The Legend of Zelda? 🇿 for Zelda ofc! Who's with me?
Seeee? I thought about the same thing!
Very good behind the scenes content. Keep it coming 👍
speaking of signed stuff, i saw Derek at Portland Retro Gaming Expo doing 16 player Faceball 2000 and really wanted to say hi and thanks for getting me onto Illbleed with your HVGN video, but it looked so busy and i didn’t want to interrupt. the thing i was gonna try to get a signature on was Big Daddy starring Adam Sandler for UMD VIDEO on PSP btw. hopefully next year if ur there!
Never underestimate the power of Half Price Books. Managed to find MGS4 for around 10 dollars once.
I got a complete mgs4 limited edition at a thrift store for ten bucks as well
I got Tetris Attack CIB for the loose price of $16.99 at Half Price Books
really loved this video! also i recognize that bookstore! :D
Love how proud Derek is of his drill and hole saw bit 😊
Lithium batteries tend to only last around 30 years, so most people who grew up with cartridge games will have them die around the last 10 years. However, having a desiccant where PCBs or electronics are stored is a great idea anyway, as it will stave off corrosion and such. It's also not a bad idea to help prevent the warping of loosely stored paper items, which you might also have near a game collection.
dunno if the video is just glitching out for me, but it ends abruptly in the middle of the credits sequence
Uploads from Projared's "Now in the 90's" and SSFF on how he collects games on the same day is a good day.
Weird story Derek, I guess I subbed during your HVGN days but fell off and restumbled on your videos the past year and love the stop skeletons from fighting content. When you pulled out the Ruby Dagger album I had to take a second glance. I used to blast that album in college and loved it. I don't think I realized that was you. Awesome stuff!
"I put the heater behind the doom collection"
Guess you gotta keep hell hot
Derek, if you need further material to discuss for Donkey Konga, may I suggest: a video on 'weird rhythm game music picks'? Donkey Konga already has a lot of those offerings of course, Losing My Religion is a VERY weird song to have Donkey Kong play bongos to, but the Japan-only Donkey Konga 3 has a bunch of anime music. This means that of all Nintendo franchises, Donkey Kong is the one that crossed over with Gundam. It also has music from the Japanese dub of the Donkey Kong CGI cartoon, because it turns out that show was really popular there!
"doom was never a crime"
what a legend.
thats so nice of Metal Jesus to give you a copy of Doom II: Screen Saver
Hey Derek. If you use a flathead machine screw and a nutsert on the other end, you could clamp those shelves together with removable and reuse-able hardware if you ever need to move them around again. Not as damaging as a wood screw and not as janky as a clamp or adhesive.
Very awesome collection!
Great video, you guys rock!
I am overwhelmed by this fantastic video but I just want to give a special shout out to not only Splatterhouse on the turbo Graphics 16 but also Legendary Axe, that game is awesome
Looks great, sir!
I like how the set up looks. Very professional and adult like.
LETS GOOOO SKELETONS
Y'all will get a milly for sure, keep up the good work gang
I'm glad you managed to get Lunar complete in the box, finally. Been bugging you to review it over my various RUclips channels since the HVGN days, Derek! Lunar 2 is indeed rarer and more expensive, but it's not as good as the first one. Both are very underrated RPGs, though, well worth playing.
Showing appreciation for the humor of the play date placement
This is beyond rad, thank you Derek (my Uncle Derek)!!!
I have the exact IKEA shelves, i NEVER thought to build a platform for more games in the back 🤯🤯 definitely trying this out. Loved the video as always Uncle Derek
Not the usual content, but I loved it. Love you guys. #SSFFForever
Always love a new video from Uncle Derek and Producer Grace(The Duce!) !
This was a nice video, a little different than the others. Always been a collector since the 90's, and all I really have is an extensive movie collection these days, so it's relatable.
Hard to keep it all going with moves and dumb architectural room layouts. I'd love custom shelves, but for years I've been using some relatively cheap, lightweight wire frame shelves off Amazon. They're not ideal and I still don't have them quite where I'd like them, but they're fully adjustable shelf spacing, stable enough, can't flop or break, are blu-ray case depth, DVD / special case height, and hold my 1000+ with room to grow etc.
Where were you and your hole saw when Bimmy was chipping through that tough 80s wood desk with a screwdriver?! HVGN goated
I leave collecting to popular youtubers, more than happy with my neatly sorted rom folders.
The deals are not really out there anymore sometimes new stuff gets cheep but regular working gamers cant compete with the career flippers
Regarding the humidity, I had my SNES collection in a sub tropical environment and last I checked, most of them still worked.
But also last I checked is approaching 10 years now :'D
