I’m not going to let Vivendi Universal off the hook for making a game called Crash Nitro Kart 2, which is completely different from Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 2, because it’s is actually a sequel to Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D, which by the way actually has more in common with Crash Tag Team Racing. This video may have made me lose my mind, but at least I learned that Crash Nitro Kart N-Gage was shockingly NOT a GBA clone. And how Yaya Panda Crash Bandicoot ios made it over to Nitro-Fueled. But sadly these mobile games are almost all Delisted! All these iPhone and Nokia games, just gone! Cell phone games deserve love too, even the bad java ones! It's hard enough to even find Crash Bandicoot gameplay for the ios kart racer games.

Hey I’m Derek Derek! So did you know Vivendi Universal made a game called Crash Nitro Kart 2, which is completely different from Crash BANDICOOT Nitro Kart 2, which is a sequel to Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D, which btw has more in common with Crash Tag Team Racing. Crash Nitro Kart already had a cell phone port on the N-Gage that was shockingly good despite being the N-Gage, but it sold waaaay less than any of the potato Java Crash Bandicoot games. Also did you know that the Zeebo exists?
Thanks for watching! Sorry for the lack of uploads this year. I'm going to have a Game Tour up in a couple of weeks and then some DOOM.

Hey, just wanted to say that I've been watching your videos on and off since your days as HVGN back when you were loosely affiliated with the guys at Retroware.
I really enjoy all of your uploads and have wound up playing a lot of great games that I would have never otherwise know existed. Your positive attitude and light hearted humor is a big contrast to most video game content creators back then and even still today, and I really appreciate that about your videos. It's a big part of why I still watch them after all this time lol.
I know you call yourself Uncle Derek a lot as a joke, but watching you just reminds me of talking to my brother about games and the jokes we would make together. We're definitely too close in age for you to ever be my Uncle Derek, but whenever you make an upload, it puts a smile on my face, like that relative you love but never having time to visit popping by unexpectedly.
I hope you continue to have success and hope you never change the general positivity that oozes from your videos.
Hope you have a good day, sorry for the rambling lol.

Another good contender for Delisted is Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. It was the full game for iPhone and iPod touch, and it featured pretty good controls for touch screen. It's also the only version of the game that lets you throw your secondary weapon during balancing sections. If I can locate my old iPod, I'll see if it still works, and if it does, I can send it for a video (but make no promises that I can find the iPod in the first place).

There is a tongue and cheek attitude about all of these things but the truth is, these things really will be lost to the annals of history. Video games are a super important part of our culture and their are huge swabs of it that are just getting deleted. I mean these games sold MILLIONS of copies and you can’t get them anywhere. And unlike console systems, emulation for cell phone systems has a long way to go.

One reason I moved away from Apple was the compatability and delisting issues. Not just games but could be any app, so imagine an important app for your workflow being incompatible, the money just poofs.
Android faces delistings all the time too but it's at least possible and easier to load up any APK to see if it'll work on newer versions. Sad thing is companies obviously prefer this and don't have to care if their apps become outdated. Microsofts been trying to do this with Windows since 8, hence Linux with Windows emulation will continue to grow. Companies shouldn't have this much control over our software libraries but best thing we can do is get the software running our way any way we can if possible.

Thank you for digging out all these versions and showing them to us! You're one of the very few channels who give any regard to pre-iPhone mobile gaming (the only portable gaming in my broke teen years), and your coverages were great so far! I really appreciate that!
    I have some objections though.
    1. At 16:29, you're telling that the first Crash Bandicoot Java kart game is what the mobile games were at the time. That tells me that you weren't much into mobile games at the time :) Just google up the gameplay of Asphalt: Urban GT 2, the 2D Java version specifically. The speed, the challenge, and the stupid fun of crashing your opponents against the wall in lots of game modes and locations are just pure joy and awesomeness! Even a simplistic, but popular Atomic Underground was much more smooth and dynamic than these Java Crash kart games.
    2. At 19:34, you compare the last Java game with a Symbian one and point at the technological progress as a cause of the latter game looking much better. This is not much due to better technology, but due to Java 2 ME's virtual machine being a slow limited crap. This is why the performances of J2ME games were bad, and audio was so poor - nothing could be done about that. But, unlike Java, Symbian apps run natively and have full access to the phone's hardware, just like iOS apps or any computer/console programs do. There were also hacks for some older phones (Siemenses, Sony Ericssons and certain Motorolas) that enabled the possibility to run native apps, and the results were often astonishing. For example there was SieDoom, a version of Doom that ran completely fine on a Siemens phone from 2004.
    3. You said a couple of times about the "pre-smartphone era" and that the Crash iPhone games were in the beginnings of that era... That's not true, as _popular_ smartphones date way back to Nokia 7650, which was way before iPhone. What defines a smartphone isn't the presence of a touchscreen and social apps, but the ability to run native apps, with multitasking, filesystem access, background operation and other things that any full-featured OS should have. Aside from smartphones (which usually had no touchscreen actually), there were also larger devices, with a resistive touchscreen and a stylus, often running Windows Mobile - those were called PDAs or portable PCs, and those that also had cellular capabilities were called communicators. There were also regular "dumb" phones, that evolved into feature phones, which had multimedia capabilites and Internet access. The first iPhone wasn't even a smartphone, because the iPhone OS 1.0 lacked even the very basic features, like third-party app support and multitasking, and gained a (very limited) filesystem access only in iOS 11. A Nokia N95 was much more "smart" than those first iPhones :)

its hilarious that most of these ports ended up selling well. i remember getting the ios nitro kart port and thinking "of all IPs, why crash? why hasnt nintendo put mario kart on ios?"
guess it shows that a big part of successfully selling a game is being in the right place at the right time.

I LOVED this game on my Nokia smartphone running Symbian back in the day. A lot of people (especially in the US where feature phones were the market leaders) criminally underestimate the contributions of Symbian, especially on Nokia devices, to the notion of what a smartphone should be. Apple perfected the formula with the capacitive touch screen rectangle form factor. I might be mixing it up with the ios version buy if my memory is not failing me I think there was an option for motion controls but on Nokia's late 2000s two-way slider phones the "music contol / gaming" buttons which are revealed when sliding the phone open in the opposite direction of the numpad in landscape mode offered a much more traditional gaming layout. Think GBA advance but with the d pad on the right and the face buttons on the left.

I cannot believe I'm 3 days late to this video. And I also cannot believe you haven't stumbled onto the wild world of legacy iOS jailbreaking yet. There are big communities separately exploring and preserving the tools, tweaks and mods that made iPhones really neat and fascinating in the early 2010s, and preserving apps and games for the 32-bit era of iOS. One of my all-time favorite mobile games, geoDefense, and its sequel, geoDefense Swarm, was part of the app delisting of 2017. The app preservation community has that and several thousands more iOS games backed up and ready to go. Really now, more work needs to go into emulating iOS to make this software actually practically playable. But if you've got an old iPhone or iPod lying around, and hopefully didn't update it to iOS 8 (remember, that was the beginning of the end!) then you've got a device ready for a big jailbreak and lots of games to get into.
My iPhone also doubles as an iPod loaded with vaporwave goodness, but that's just me :)

Back in the day these mobile phone games used to put 3D at the end for the higher end 3D Symbian games so you knew which game you were getting because on these phone’s storefronts you couldn’t see screenshots. So the 2008 mobile phone games titled Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart and Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D are just a way to delineate that specific release’s different versions for different strength mobile devices.
