It can cause massive arguments to rate guitarists. That being said, I believe Gary was just in a completely different universe from absolutely anyone else. He could instantly play any genre and convince you it was the only genre he played, and had played it his whole life. If anyone truly went to the crossroad to 'make a deal', it was Gary. If anyone else went there for a deal, they got a bum deal. He got the full package. His phrasing, and again, from any genre you'd like, is just pure music from his soul. He didn't 'play' a guitar. What he did with it is actually quite indescribable. You don't observe what he does, you feel it. Gilmour would be a close second, but yet, Gary was better, if that even makes sense. As you pointed out, being able to make the listener 'feel' the chords under the melody, as well as possible percussive 'beats' is truly the food reserved for a master. He was never 'flashy' to call attention to himself. He used flashy parts to surprise your ear and break up any possible monotony. The amount of times he adjusts his volume and switches between pickups is something you can watch over and over again and always be surprised by some tiny nuance that you missed before. To me, blues can become tedious and the same old phrases roll out over and over. But every time Gary invokes his blues, I listen and absorb every note. It's always fresh. Truly timeless.

I always liked Thin Lizzy for some reason. I was about 15 at that time. I remember the Cowboy song. I play Drums so I kind of like it all. I never realized at the time how Great Gary Moore was at playing the guitar. I just liked the entire band. But i gained some music theory just by reading your comment. Thanks

IMHO, Gary Moore was a guitar player's Guitarist.
Such feel and ability to drop in the pocket and move around at will, very much the same groove as Hendrix.
    Thanks for this content 👍

The video with guitar magazine is still on RUclips where you see Gary interviewed and you see him demonstrating the different guitars and techniques and different styles, his jazz guitar demo showed just how good he was plus command of the instrument and music and that he wasn’t just limited to rock pentatonics and tricks. There was also a RUclips video where he was at an English pub and a band was playing and obviously the band’s guitarist was replaced by Gary that evening to have a top professional play. A good friendly bloke actually.
He did play for Lizzy but really was a studio man for George Harrison and he was hired and played for the reformed Cream with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce. If you see the footage he recreates all Eric Claptons solos perfectly.

Watch him trade B.B. King licks with The Man Himself.
He could've whipped out anything. Shred, jazz, simply opened up into blues rock...but all that simply lies in the background, implicit, while he trades licks in a legend's style, and like a good pit bull, couldn't be shook.

Moore was excellent, but B.B. would’ve been very easy to outplay, especially after the 60’s, when he stopped playing rhythm at all.

    Love this series.
Moore was an excellent player, who I wish had found another band, when he was at a certain age, because I just don’t think he was a great songwriter.
I think you should revisit Hendrix, and try to use the acoustic Hear My Train a Coming and the live take of just Jimi, playing Electric Ladyland.
It shows what he could do, far beyond that version of Hound Dog, that was recorded on his little tape recorder, during a filmed interview or it was the movie crew, that were filming for the Rainbow Bridge movie.
I’m pretty sure that’s where the footage and audio is from.

I don’t pretend to understand the blues at all. All I know is that I love it….and Gary is a monster!
