Great commentary, as usual. From what I have read. It was pretty much what Paul Stanley had said, in the video. He wanted Bill Aucoin to concentrate on KISS. Of course, later. The same thing happened with Gene Simmons. He wanted to pursue his acting career. So, Paul Stanley was taking on most of the band duties.

Are you crazy , did you ever watch the sopranos? Hesh said a hit is a hit . George Martin forgot more than the Beatles knew !!! He said many times as a group they weren’t very good , but he saw potential, so he gave them a chance , Paul even said when they started they didn’t know any thing , they learned and had to work at it .and George Martin wasn’t the fifth Beatle , he was first ,second , and third , up until 65/66 . The Beatles and stones where both limited , Beatles better song writers, stones s bit better at playing , but they where both a notch above a garage band, except for Paul maybe , the stones where a corporation since the mid 70s . Time to move on kiddies , Led Zeppelin, that took talent , and they didn’t need a producer to tell them which instruments fit where . Cheers

I liked Black Oak Arkansaw due to Tommy their drummer. And they had a couple of hits. Every time I saw Van Halen with David...I always saw Jim Dandy in David ways...especially with his banter between songs. I saw BOA 3 times and VH 4 times. I will say I still think it was more than people will ever admit. BY the way as a drummer I was drawn to both Tommy and Alex playing.

That's really nice to hear some good things from Mick about Led Zeppelin. I've watched an interview on RUclips with Pete Townsend, and he has said he disliked them because they became so much bigger than The Who. So, that's clearly a jealousy element! I do think that Eric Clapton and Keith Richards' dislike stems from them being completely blues and rock n roll purists [as we're Zeppelin], but they were definitely the 'odd man out' in those circles, ie, The Who, The Stones, Cream, Floyd. I've always been slightly saddened by that outlook!

Lee Sklar , James Jameson, Paul McCartney , Marcus Miller have played on more hit records and songs ! Which is the main function of great bassists! Solo electric bass is a new thing ? When you contribute to great songs….you will live forever! If you can make people cry or dance …you are great ! Jeff Berlin wouldn’t fit that category? He had a piece of a YES gig ? And that’s it ? Bill Bruford didn’t make the top 40 list for any songs? Sting has a better track record…I like Jeff but I like Ralph Armstrong better !

Jimmy page is saying what most musicians said about hendrix upon seeing Jimi first time. The bottom line is Jimi's style (Double stops) style of rhythm n blues chops. Jimi listened to many artist and guitarist Muddy waters style in particular played (double stops) Jimi took muddy waters style and added more skill, taking it up another notch. EXTREME. Intricate chord inversions. Similar to the way POLYPHIA tim henson plays (double stops) except most guitarist CANNOT play polyphia because Tim henson adapted unlimited techniques (right hand' strumming hand) techniques 'thump' (flamenco skills) require more practice.. The extreme terrifying guitarist are the ones who know Hendrix like 'Shawn lane' guthrie govan' uli jon roth, steve vai' and joe satriani. All mention Jimi' Hendrix more so during the eighties Jimi Hendrix was favorite. (You have NO idea Jimi exploded again with guitar underground. Every guitarist said number one guitar record was (electric land lady) Also 70s shredders of course, guitarist NO one mentions anymore. Like 'mahogany rush' uli jon roth, pat traverse, neal schon ALL came from HENDRIX. They know the importance of hendrix. Jimis 2nd album axis bold as love. To the average listener wouldn't understand' because axis bold as love recording sucks. Hendrix LOST the original master recording at party. The experience' Noel, Mitch and Jimi had to re-record most of the songs in ONE day. Years ago during 80s interview mitch mitchel said they went studio re- recorded songs 'but feeling was gone'. Jimi wouldn't of released if it was Jimi decision. Axis bold as love album is BIBLE (rhythm n blues guitar (double stops) I always liked hendrix but (I am guilty) NOT unferstanding hendrix back during 1980s. It wasnt until LATE 80s (at music store) it happened. Someone was actually playing 'castles made of sand' on guitar NOBODY played like that... I had never seen that style played before. Most guys played Hendrix songs 'purple haze' or 'voodoo child'. At that time hendrixs music was already over 20 years. At that time everyone was into van halen whitesnake or yng-yang malmsteen. Trying to play anyways. I was already listing to jason becker Micheal angelo. I seen Micheal angelo in 1987 in San Pedro waters club. (Micheal angelo blew every guitarist i ever seen away at that time back then). But i was always ahead on guitarist. But seeing Jimi hendrixs style was breath of fresh air. I had to see it, Then learn it myself before I understood jimi hendrix. I didnt hear it on record. I could say a more on people who THINK of jimi overrated. They are as WRONG about Jimi Hendrix as they were about Buckethead. Jimi was more known of course

However that was not your fault. From the business point of view the album was not a great success, but what is that compared to the music you created? I play electric guitar. I've heard a good deal of live bootleg material from LZ, and I was once bedazzled by the image of JP, and this included the music, yet was not confined to the music. However, any art must stand on its own, and without the artist (or his fans) there to defend the art. We're here to talk about the art, specifically, the performative aspect of JP's art...not the hype of JP; not the mystique of JP; not the image of JP; not who I become in the eyes of my friends for being a JP fan--none of that. To JP's credit, some of the earlier live performances I've heard by way of bootlegs impressed me as being white-hot: Exciting to listen to--thrilling, even--and cleanly done. Also in these performances will be found variations, or re-interpretations of certain songs, and these are surprising and weighted with merit: Such reimaginings often expanded a particular song's scope, and they add artistic value to the particular art objects themselves (i.e., the the studio versions of the songs which got modified to good effect in live performances). Through, say, 1977, there were some standout live performances of JP with the band, but I found myself regularly disappointed with his playing when listening to live bootlegs unearthed here and there. For this reason, my verdict is that he is indeed a sloppy live player: Some of it is absolute trash. "Shitty with a capital S," would be another way of putting it. Wimpy, incomplete bends; poorly fretted notes; a reliance upon a handful of run-down; all-purpose lead licks; and a marked tendency to insist upon playing ahead of the beat are some of the things that he must answer for when it comes to his art. Others guitarists and artists must do so, and Time is no respecter of persons. Art that stands the test of time is art finely done. JP's greatest achievement is in his role as Executive Producer of LZ's albums: What you're hearing on every track of every album is the mind of JP. Eddie Van Halen asked why it was that JP didn't honor his own music more by giving better live performances with LZ, and Eddie Van Halen was right to raise that question. Honestly, I feel sometimes that he approached playing live with an attitude of, "Here's my band (but I'm the show), and I'm going to piss all over the music just because it's mine, and because I can. You've paid me for the record; you've paid me for the show; and, in short, you'll pay me what's demanded...and I'll give you whatever I feel you may deserve. If I'm gacked out on heroin two nights out of every three that we're scheduled to play on a given tour, and you happen to attend on one of those nights, then you'll take what's given you. Besides, you should be thanking me for being me, and don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.

I don't completely agree that Mick was "framing" his praise for LZ in terms of Jimmy Page. He's a compulsive story teller (in the best sense) so, to talk about LZ, he tells a story - from inside the music business. I feel that if his story had started with how he first met Plant or Bonham, then he would have been as happy to take it from there. Loved the story, and loved hearing his genuine praise for LZ.

Early Beatles' lead guitars may sound "thin", but then the sessions around the Revolver album came and we hear more distorted and heavy guitar sounds. George leaving the Gretsch and Ric 360/12 and going to the Gibson SG led that sound. Not many heavy guitar sounds were in records back in '65. Maybe Jimi Hendrix or The Who around that time, but mostly bands like Cream, Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, and others lost to time picked up the idea and used the deeper, heavier and distortion in their guitar sounds soon after Revolver. Then Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Blue Oyster Cult, and others followed. Technology and innovation took over, but The Beatles were among the forefront of it.

There are various types of styles in playing in the world of 'rock music'. Hendrix, Clapton, Angus Young, Jimmy Page, Leslie West, Tommy Iommi, John Fogerty, etc. were "minor pentatonic scale' (aka: blues scale) players all inspired by the Chuck Berry and Bo Didley playing in the mid-1950's, perhaps guitarists like Lonnie Mack and well as electrifying and doing old "blues licks" from the Black, blues-folk style artists and pioneers of the depression era. Other more styles were pursued by players like Jeff Beck (trailblazing creativity later in his career), James Burton, Alvin Lee, Dick Dale (with Surf Music craze in the early 60's), Carlos Santana (Hispanic influenced rock 1969), Terry Kath (1970 with the early years of Chicago), Joe Satriani and Steve Vai (jazz-rock fushion in the 80's). There were also Steve Lukather and Prince (who could play anything), Neil Geraldo, Brian May, David Gilmore, and Neal Schon in the 70's. Eddie Van Halen and his 32nd note tapping started a whole new rock genre which too many others to name followed (i.e.: copied) that style.

I agree , boating on the guitar on one string is super boring and robotic. If you look at a typical bass players fretboard , the lower notes have wear and gunk while the higher register frets on their basses are super clean . That alone tells you a lot about a bass player , they don't explore or play on their whole fretboard . I'm a bass player myself and I tend to use every single note on my bass .

Jimi Hendrix was the FOUNTAINHEAD. Period. Hendrix work that would all be posthumous left so much to enjoy and so much to learn. straight Ahead, Night bird Flying, etc. Uli Jon Roth and earlier than him Frank Marino plugged into Hendrix playing. Marino was mocked for it. Check out his earlier stuff, meaning his Hendrix covers. Don Krschner's Rock Concert SSB for example. Uli took it all further with the releases of Earthquake and Firewind LP's. But Jimi Hendrix was the Fountainhead as the Blues and to a lesser extent country were for Rock + Roll. Neoclassical etc. is up to interpretation but Hendrix blew the doors open for creativity with the roots clearly, deeply planted. I.E. Royal albert Hall's Bleeding Heart
