Where Are The Asian Borders? (Part 2: Europe)
Asia is the largest and most populous continent in the world. From the physical extremes to the cultural, it's a continent that has shown tremendous diversity from one end to the other. But what exactly counts as Asia? Where are the Asian borders?
This video is part two of a three part series.
In part one, we covered the specific Asian borders following the coastal regions from the Tumen River between North Korea & Russia to the Suez Canal in Egypt. In between, we went over Japan's Bonin (Ogasawara) Islands, the Malay Archipelago, Indonesia's border with Papua New Guinea, the Wallace Line, the Weber Line, Asian continental shelf, the Middle East, Yemen's Socotra Archipelago, Afro-Eurasia and Egypt's border.
In part two, we cover the most controversial Asian border section of Europe starting from Egypt, through Lebanon, Syria, Cyprus, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia. We end on the eastern side of Russia (Siberia) bordering North America, which is where part three will commence.
Many feel Asian and Europe shouldn't have been separate continents to start with, as there isn't a clear physical geographical divide between the two. In fact, a few countries teach the continent of Eurasia as a result. This made this video particularly challenging as nothing is definitive and is all open to interpretation.

Turkey isn't European or Asian, it's continental status is super disputed.
If you ask to a European, they will say it is Asia. But if you ask to an African or an Asian, they will most likely tell that it is in Europe. There are good reasons. Despite Turkey being pretty westernized compared to its Asian counterparts, it still falls behind Western Europe. I am Turkish myself and I asked a Greek, a Macedonian and a Kosovar (or Albanian, ethnicities...) this question, and they ALL said it is European. The answer is: Depends on how you see Turkey. Do you see just a European country that fell behind, or a westernized Asian country that is just not accepted by Western Europe.

Me too!

İstanbul çok seviyorum abi
Let me summarize the Russian-Asian or European thing.
Russia is considered European. Since the language is Slavic. 'Europe' Russia is more populated and habitable than Siberia/Asia Russia.
Sure 77% of Russia is in Asia. But only about 27% of the population of Russia are in Siberia. (including Immigrants) So yeah. Russian people are considered to be European.
so native Siberians, are they Russian or Asian?
Thtmats dump u know ni yhung abiut russia
Talking about Russia in Europe is thought to be part of Asia. No matter what the Russians look like. Ethnicity does not matter. (no one calls Americans Europeans). Culturally, mentally and politically it is a completely different country. The same goes for turkey (although I don't know why anyone would call them Europeans since even geographically they are almost completely outside of Europe.
Russia, politically and culturally, is most similar to Eastern Europe. People don’t call Americans Europeans because there’s too many ethnicities and races here to collectively call them as European. Turkey is different though. Its culture is closer to the Middle East in my opinion.
It’s hard though, since Asia is so big and so diverse. The Kazakhstan-region of people also sometimes look "European," but i’d consider them an Asian country. I guess that was the argument you were trying to make.
I love this series, it fits my obsessions with geography and Asia, but you should post part 3.
Great video as always!Cant wait for part 3!In my opinion, the Asian borders in Turkey are in Bosphorus thus making Turkey a transcontinental country (which makes more sense to me than Greece).Turkey , as you go deeper into the country (meaning going eastern) you can see that a lot of people have more west Asian feautures than European, though in Instanbul and in Western Turkey you can see Turkish people with European feautures... For me i think the most debatable borders are ones involving Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia...:) Anyway, sorry for the long comment!Much love from Greece!Keep the videos coming Kento!
Zeta Kseplati do you love Turkey as a country?
No, the Bosphorus is not a continental divide. It has never been. It is just a baseless and useless mental creation that has no meaning, the Bosphorus is just a strait, the narrowest strait in the world and does not separate anything. Countries like Lebanon and Israel are in Europe.

Thanks a lot for the interesting topic again. I benefited a lot of information. :D
Kento Bento the labels "Europe" and "Asia" are not in Orenburg, they're in Atyrau, I'm from there and those are clearly the pictures of Atyrau.
FINALLY
Kento Bento, to your previous video: Africa is the mother of humanity. Around 500,000 years ago a group of people left Africa to Eurasia, who scientists now call Neanderthals. The ones in Europe developed light skin, light hair and light eyes due to climate. In Asia people developed a bit differently, because of its climate, this should explain how ASIAN people got the "squinty" eyes, as you call it, they had a gene for it, since there are people in Africa with these eyes to this day. Then 30,000 years ago second wave of people from Africa went to Europe, called Cro-Magnons, they bred within Eurasia to Neanderthals, which caused their extinction. This is why 1-2% Neanderthal gene within Eurasians. To go further, in actuality, now days Africans have pure Homo sapiens blood, while people with light skin are mixed. (BUT, how mixed are we? If Neanderthals too were black once and are rovers from Africa.) Basically we are all one people ;)
6:55 the Eurovision also says that Australia is european so that doesn't count

78% of Russians live in European part, but many of them do not consider themselves Europeans.
But they don't consider themselves 'Asian' either I guess? Ethnically they are closer to Europeans and the language is a lot like many Eastern European languages.
They are more culturally related to eastern European countries like the Balkans and the Slavs.

As a Kazakhstan citizen I know, that we strictly separate Asia from Europe at the Kazakhstan border, where Kazakhstan will be Asia, and Russia is a part of Europe.
In my French school we learn that Turkey and Cyprus are in Europe..
In Slovenia we learn they're part of Asia(exept European part of Turkey)

Ural river bridge is not in Russia (Orenburg), it is in Kazakhstan (Atyrau).
i guess there are many bridges over the ural that use this name. like in oral, kazakhstan ( 51° 7' 31.62" N 51° 21' 50.87" E) or actually also in orenburg like he said (51.753273, 55.107241). the small picture he uses (at 7:36) is from orenburg, the photos following, i have to ask are they from atyrau? i know for a fact that orenburg also has a huge monument with europe written on one side and asia on the other, been there 15 years ago.

Now I'm a proud European, but I think it would be better for everyone involved if we accepted that Europe is, in fact, a peninsula rather than a continent.
Alternatively we might define Europe to be wherever the locals love Cheese, in which case Turkey is welcome to join the Eu on account of their delicious brined goat cheese rolls.
no thanks. we are located %97 in asia.
@Primotef theres only north and south america because americans consider themselves better than undeveloped countries. America is one continent
Also countries like Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Israel and Russia and members of UEFA (European football body) and not AFC (Asian football body)
Denmark is a transcontinental country as it owns Greenland 🇬🇱 and it is in North America
Excuse me, Croatia had been an EU member for four years by 2017, the time of publishing this video.
Asia and Europe are obviously one continent geographical continent but they're divided because of ethnicity (Caucasian and 'the rest'. For this reason, to be consistent it should be either one or 6 continents (Europe, Middle east, Central Asia, Subcontinent, east Asia and south east Asia). There's no reason to cut by the Ural mountains but not the Himalayas. Continents are arbitrary division anyway.
Nathaniel Bradford I always wondered why Americans keep using such terms as Caucasian. It sounds awful, and is far from truth.
And dont get m started with whole "Hispanic race". You guys call people mostly descended from native Americans (obviously mixed with other people), by the term Hispanic. Spanish. As if Spanish language had anything to do with American race. :P
fair point but I'm Australian
Nathaniel Bradford Yeah, sorry about that. I shouldn't assume anything. Still, this concept is mainly present in the Anglosphere. Just out of curiosity, do you use the same terms as Americans in Australia? I thought that due to Australian connection with Britain, you would have more "European" terms for race and such.
If we divided countries by race, then Asian would be three continents. There's the australoid people down south in the Malay countries. The Caucasians in the west (Middle East). The mongoloids in east Asia. This all won't make sense so we should just consider Europe and Asian one continent
Its a very diverse place!
awesome video, but two thing triggered me a lot, first of all Cyprus is in europe, and second, Georgia is too, historically and culturally Georgia was always closer to europe, demographically and religionwise Georgia is european, plus Georgia is EU membership candidate, and will join EU eventually some time in future.

Caucasus has another natural border too, which is the Aras river.
He said he would be sticking to the main 3 divisions of the caucasus (particularly the third). He even mentioned the existence of more divisions than those 3.
Europe shouldn't be a separate continent. It is neither big in area nor in population nor in diversity. Europe should be another part of Asia like middle east, south asia, east asia and south east asia
Europe, the middle east, south Asia, east Asia, Southeast Asia, and Central Asia are all diverse and could be their own continents this is why I think using culture alone is bad but it should still be used a bit also if you think Europe is too small then all of Oceania must be in Asia
@@dorotatapukoko7021 they are separated by a water body from Asia and that is the definition of a continent. Continent is a geographical term, not a cultural one

Turkey is Asian because it's capital (Ankara) is in Asia, also why Russia European.
At 7:40 there are snapshots of gazebos or pavilions indicating Asian and European sides of the River Ural. These are in Atyrau, Kazakhstan on our Ural River Bridge, not Orenburg! I'm an American who has lived in Atyrau for four years and those are our gazebos!
I have an idea for the Europe/Asia border.
How about it goes along the Northern foothills of the Lesser Caucasus, then through the lowest points in between, then it hooks onto the Southern foothills of the Greater Caucasus mountains.
Then, it hooks onto the Sumqait river, along the Caspian Sea, and then up the Ural.
It seems to make more sense, because it considers cultural and geopolitical lines, while maintaining an unchanged physical boundary.
What do you think?
I hardly consider the caucasus to be european, only politically. Culturally the nation's have always been middle eastern/Asian. And state borders change over time. Modern day armenia is 10 percent of historic armenia, which would extend to modern day northern Iraq. Azerbaijan used to include northwestern iran. If this were the case now, would you still draw the borders with the countries?

Huh, I never knew that they tried to separate Asia and Europe by a mountain range. That... Makes a lot of sense actually. If the mountains are strenuous enough, they DO provide a natural border that separates regions pretty effectively.
But what about the Himalayas tho? Why don't we split South Asia too? Europe cultural border also makes no sense because obviously Asia is not even culturally connected to each other relatively. Then why is the Middle East part of Asia? Why is South Asia part of Asia? And most importantly why should we make Europe special???
@@hrstwn That's a good point.
It was probably Europeans who made the distinction and declared that all of Asia was one continent.
But it should also be mentioned that the terms "Europe" and "Asia" have been around for a long time, longer than our language I believe, and certainly longer than any knowledge of geography was both complete and common enough to declare that India should be a separate continent. And "Middle East" is definitely a newer term compared to the others.
