How Hong Kong Became a Giant Refrigerator
Here’s a statement-'Over the last 50 years, Hong Kong has become a giant refrigerator'. Despite its hot, humid, subtropical climate, the city remains an icicle all year round. But what do I mean by this?
Well, Hong Kong has a bizarre problem. It has developed an obsession with air-conditioners so extreme it no longer makes any sense-winter coats are needed during the sweltering summer, and ACs are blasted in the midst of winter.
Now, there are many countries around the world that use and abuse their air conditioners-Singapore, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the US, to name a few-but Hong Kong (the city I grew up in), takes all this to a whole new level. So this raises questions-why are there so many ACs? Why is the temperature set so low? And-strangest of all-why can‘t they just turn it off?
With Hong Kong, the answer is never simple...

The last point about going back to constructing buildings better at cooling is so underrated.
When I was living on-campus in NUS in Singapore, my room was in a 26-storey industrial-themed skyscraper. The entire design was meant to be used with AC, yet for cost reasons they had rooms on lower floors without AC installed.
It was an absolute nightmare as the whole apartment design was designed for no natural convection/ventilation, with the architects assuming that it would only be sensible to AC the whole massive skyscraper but the administration then preventing AC from being there.
From previous experience, living without AC can be acceptable even in the tropics; in contrast, designing living spaces that make living without AC unviable is the true big culprit.
I grew up in Thailand and this is very true here. Even in schools you would find classrooms that were so cool you would see students wearing several layers of jackets inside 😂😅

I love AC. It really boosts productivity. I can't think straight in summer without it.
It just basically makes you want to spend summer indoors. I can understand ACs in offices but in private setting its not a necessity. People have been living for thousands of years without it and many still do nowadays.
@Mixz1890 babe do you realize how hot it gets in the summer time in many parts of the world? Going without ac is not an option you literally feel like dying its the worst
@Mixz1890 You’ve never had to live in a subtropical country have you…people literally die from heatstroke without it because the climate has changed so much in recent times
@@mu3191The same people who criticise people for abusing the AC are also the same people who either crank their heaters to max aka 2000W+ during winter or have their fire place shoved full of wood pumping out a trail of black smoke from the chimney.
They’d say that people who can’t tolerate heat are whimpy yet are the first to wear a puffy coat when it gets below 18 degrees C.
It’s all the same, it’s just that some people are more tolerate to heat and some to could. I could personally sit in a air conditioned room with AC cranked to the lowest 16 degrees while in shorts, walk into cool room (4 degrees C) and adapt to it, but sweat buckets at 22+ degrees.
As someone from Sweden, calling 15°C "extremely cold" is laughable. If I walked into a mall and the room temperature was 15°C I would be very comfortable.
It's fascinating how different things are south of the equator.
To be fair 15c inside is very different to outside temp. 15c inside even in Sweden would ok the cold side of what room temp should be & you’d probably notice it at some point

you don't need to turn off the ac. issue here in SEA is the humidity. set the ac to higher temps or use the dehumidifier mode works great for comfort while reducing power consumption.
i do that in the argentinian summer. set the ac to a few degrees below the ambient temp. thats enough to be confortable considering the dryer air and 2/5°c lower is cool enough. btw, i only use it to sleep comfy.
@@g-low6365 right!
The dehumidifier uses almost as much power as an aircon, with only a fraction of the main thing people want.
Yes when its 28c and 85% humidity, having it become 50% humidity is nice, but most people would rather pay the extra 20% in power to get the temp down to 22c

I live in Calgary, Canada, and we don't use an air conditioner in my home. It can get hot too in the summer, even if it's not as hot as Hong Kong. However, many other houses use air conditioners.

A good AC can make a lot of difference in summer. But you need to mind the thermal shock making it more likely for you to get sick. At least they make me stay away from their shops. There is no way I would go and stay in their buildings below 20°C.

4:47 - Those recommended temperatures are pure insanity. Winter temperatures should never _exceed_ 20°C (heating beyond that is just wasteful), and that _entire_ summer range is just misery (especially if it's humid).

. I've personally never heard that AC=healthy as a person living in Hong Kong, but rather air circulation=healthy. That means country parks with air circulation also means healthy, which people flooded to during the pandemic cuz they have no where to go to spend their free time. It feels better in a place with air circulation than a place with fully enclosed windows and dead air flow. It doesn't matter whether the circulation comes from the AC or not, opening windows and turning on fans also means air circulation, not just specific to air conditioner.
but the problem is everyone turns on AC, so if you open window hot air will come into your apartment (or as a result of horrible building designs and urban planning that make air circulation really bad in the city), and lets just say fans don't cool you in any way when they blow warm and humid air into your face.

i say this from experience
As an air conditioning service technician in Indonesia, I declare an absolute win.
As someone who’s lived in HK for a certain amount of time, I’ve never actually heard any Hong Kong residents saying that AC is healthy. In fact, most people I know speak the exact opposite, they say that AC is bad for health because it stops people from sweating, thereby preventing the body from naturally removing toxins. To my knowledge, they don’t really like the AC either, but since HK is so damn hot and humid during spring, summer and autumn (in autumn it’s just hot, not humid), turning on the AC seems to be the only way to stay sane. I might also add that the consensus, at least from what’s I’ve gathered amongst people I know, is that the energy efficient AC models are “not cold at all”. Perhaps they just came across some that are poorly made. I don’t know.
These videos are all the same! The internet never tells the reality! Hong-Kong is way too hot especially in summer so owning an AC is a must otherwise you'll die from overheating unless you stay in a pool all day long and that's also unhealthy for your gut!
@@johnclayton4946 okay then what did the people of hong kong dio before the invention of AC? lmao
@@beseburany9110 I hope you realize that it wasn’t as hot as it is now as it was in the past because of climate change + other factors…
@@lessons5370 Correct I live in a nation that used to be cold and in the summer it becomes like a tropical beach today!
Why can't we keep AC at 25-26C indoors? I have to own a sweater which I keep and wear only at the office because I can't regulate AC. What a waste of energy. I let my apartment heat up to 30C and only enable AC above that - in practice only a few hottest days of the year. Seriously, I feel perfectly comfortable in 27C and I can survive little bit more.
As a hongkonger, feels helpless, and i want to point out something else as well
1. high humidity, sweat can't evaporate easily
2. crowded skyscraper blocking wind, even residential area
3. Sub-divided flats everywhere, most householders will buy the cheapest AC but not the most efficient one, as renter pay the electricity bill
As a Gweilo living in Hong Kong, I would like to add a few points:
1. No need for AC in Winter. Winters are less humid in Hong Kong than in Paris, and temperatures hardly ever exceed 15 degrees centigrade. Every year in December I have an argument with my colleagues to switch off the AC for the remainder of the Winter so we don't have to wear jackets and coats... in the office.
2. Hong Kong, as a city, is horrendously badly designed, trapping the heat inside the city
3. Hong Kongers are cheap; they buy the cheapest, lowest quality crap, which consumes more electricity. They will never buy expensive energy-efficient AC units.
4. Cheap electricity. Nobody cares about keeping the AC on all day long, as electricity is dirt cheap.
5. And for fuck's sake, fix your AC units that constantly drip on the sidewalk, dammit! It's supposed to be forbidden by law, but law enforcement in this city is non-existent. Luckily Hong Kongers are placid.
@@johnjohnson6090 one time we had the a/c broke down in winter at the office, however most offices are designed that windows can't be opened. You will start smelling like sweat after an hour or so even in winter time. (And of course we didnt have fans... But i guess with fans it is workable, but most bosses wanted to keep things tidy in the office)
@@mabokman Yes, Yes, I am aware of this argument.
How come this is only an issue in Hong Kong? I never encountered such issue in Canada, America, the UK or in France? How come?
Besides, we've got windows that can be opened at my office, but still my colleagues switch on the AC instead of opening the window...
And, btw, take off your coats inside the office, and you won't sweat.
One more point
If all your neighbours turn on their ac and you open the window, all the heat air from those ac would come in your home since the apartments are so close together in HK, you feel even hotter you have no choice but to turn on your ac too.
@@johnjohnson6090 how are you supposed to stop them leaking? It's in the nature of the ac unit. Humidity gathers on the evaporator. If it's too humid out, it has nowhere to go except the ground. Your car has a special duct to get the water on the road, rather than the floor inside.
You missed data centres all over the world which need massive cooling for the heat generating servers and which have big appetite of electricity.

In HK, there was AC in every single classroom in my primary school while over here in Singapore, only fans are installed in even the elite primary and secondary school classrooms.

Me: Fuck that, I'm out.
As a person in the UK, The temperature has taken such a sudden rise that I’d genuinely recommend covering yourself in cold water and switching on an AC/Fan.
Another vicious cycle is the diminishing ability to acclimatize to the heat.
1) Turn on AC
2) Body gets used to being in a cool environment
3) When outside, the same temperature feels a lot hotter (reduced tolerance to heat)
4) Avoid the heat as much as possible (go indoors with AC)
5) Repeat step 1 to 4
I wonder if they could all collectively start raising the temps on their ACs slowly over time and get used to the heat again. It would take most of Hong Kong working together to do that though, because if just a few people did it, it would get wicked hot in their buildings due to the rest of the ACs still producing so much heat.

Most of the energy used is from the multiple motors involved in the refrigeration cycle that draw major Amps on start up, as tech improves and we are able to throttle the comfort according to the the load without stopping a system they will become much more efficient. Takes more energy to start an AC than it does to keep it running at variable speeds for days. It’s the starting and stopping of these motors and systems that stresses our grid so much.
No lie when i visited hongkong n when ever i walk by a building and door opens the amount of cold air that comes out it is freaking insane
When he said "places with no air conditioning seemed more primitive", as a Hong Konger that hit me.
That's straight to the core
I hate AC abusers(they emit useless CO2 emissions). Why people don't try dehumidifiers or adapt their body with heat? People should use AC only when needed. Indian Government put limit on AC manufacturers that they can't sell ACs capable of lowering temperature below 25C(ideal room temperature is 25C).
I live in Ahmedabad, India which is situated at Tropic of Cancer and I have absolutely no problem with dry heat(low moisture) even at 40-42C(104-108F). Only humidity along with heat is issue for me after rainy season.
I can live in dry heat at home studying(and other non physical activities) without fan/AC after removing my t-shirt. After coming home doing a physical activity, I need fan and take a bath. People regularly bath 2-3 times a day in my city.
Houses can be made more cooler by using modern construction techniques and using some cheap hacks like covering windows during hottest parts of days(usually noon-afternoon).

I keep my A/C set at 50f, in the warm months. In the winter I just keep my windows open. People who like it hot, I suspect, are just practicing for where they're going in the afterlife 😉🤣

9:35 the heavy users do use more power however they never turn off that power consumption and that makes it easier on the power companies as the greatest challenge is keeping the electrical output and voltage management incredibly difficult when people all do what ever they want when ever they want. Now you need expensive power sources designed to deliver power with seconds notice just to stop power from changing so much that every electrical circuit fries itself on a whim. It is the masses creating the problem.

Building so many skyrise buildings which are made of concrete which stores heat, causes the city to be sweltering.
When you click on a video, expecting it to be a simple video about air conditioners, but got a free lesson in Environmental Science to go along with it.

"This video was made in partnership with Bill Gates." A'ight imma head out.
As a fellow Hong Konger. Yes I have 4 A/C unit in my family’s flat but we replaced them with more energy/smart efficient A/C. And we don’t use them in the winter at all and in summer times we only use them at night when it’s really hot and if it’s raining then we don’t use the A/C as the rain cools down temperature and we just use a fan. For day time in summer we just turn everything off as my family has to either go to work or to university. We hope that other Hong Kongers follow the suit in using less A/C as much as they can :) we can break out of the cycle 💪
Non HKER: How on earth did the medical professionals of hong kong not tell puplic infections spreading infections more and not cleaning air? That seems like having modern technology with medieval superstition.
@@likira111 HKER: Ask the medical professionals lmao, but my thought is they’ve actually told us, but we didn’t want to believe it?
I tried dehumidifier and its like using an ac with 27 degrees celcius, its quite cooling and low cost energy compare to ac.

Laying in my apartment which has 31°C in it 😆 Humidity is also high so it feels way hotter. I'm from Northern country so it is really challenging for me to survive. I turn on my portable AC but I can't stand the sound it makes so I never leave it all day and all night.
