    🌏 Asian Borders (Part 2): ruclips.net/video/uVZQDYhsLRA/видео.html
⭐ Get Nebula now: go.nebula.tv/kentobento (includes my Nebula Exclusive shows)
    👆🏼 Clarifications:
    - There are many viewpoints for what counts as Asia (some even consider Australia to be part of Asia...it's not), so this video is less about what's 'right', and more an overview & analysis of different perspectives.
    - There's a lot of debate in the comments whether to use 'Australia', 'Australasia' or 'Oceania' as the continental terminology. I won't get into the details here, but Oceania doesn't come close to being a "large, discrete, continuous mass of land" (it's also more-so a region) so geographically it's hard to call it a continent. But geopolitically, it's another story.
    - I used the term 'Sea of Japan' like the majority of the world, but I am certainly aware that many Korean people prefer 'East Sea'. Note: the only country where Google labels it East Sea is in South Korea's Google Maps).
    - Likewise, many Arab countries would prefer 'The Arabian Gulf', rather than 'The Persian Gulf' that was used in the video.
    - I pronounced 'Weber' wrong. It's said 'Vay-ber', not 'Web-ber'
    - Most, but not all, of Yemen's Hanish Islands is considered part of Asia.
    - Different countries teach a differing number of existing continents. Many parts of the world teach 7 continents including China, India & most English speaking countries. Japan, Russia and Eastern Europe go with 6 continents. And France, Italy, Spain & Indonesia go with 5.

asia isn't ethno continent like europe. it's diverse with ethnics and linguistics. not like one pale european. if skin colour is a boarder, tunisia, morocco, west sahara, algeria, egypt, libya, djibouti aren't part of africa continent then.

I knew Australiasia as Oceania or simply as Australia, and Australia is definitely not an Asian country, part of Indonesia is in Oceania. And also New Zealand is in Oceania, but Australia is a continent and New Zealand is a continent too how that can be? Could you explain it on the next video also?

    • @Moulagato
      @Moulagato 7 лет назад +351

You can say that too ? well It's actually much more accurate than a so-called "Australasian" continent. Since you have to put a lot of pacific Island such as Polynesia in a continent, it's much more logical to call it Oceania (or something else) than giving the continent a name of a country. good video though !

The australian part is the same as the asian one but, connected with australia and the rest is the transition part between the webber and the wallace line. The Lydekker line is often ignored because it wasn't taught by the school

Muhammad Vitra The transitional region is Wallacea though. The thing is that both of the current curiculum stated both idea. Either using Weber or Lydekker line as the most-eastern separation. I grew on both so its confusing for me. If i remember correctly 2006 curiculum is using Weber and 2013 curiculum is using Lydekker. Quite interesting when you have two books that contradicts each other.

This video was too long. Halfway through it, I got hungry so I left it playing and went to the kitchen to fix my self a sandwich.
But then I found out that I'm out of mayonnaise so I went to a store. There, I saw the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my whole life. But I'm really a shy person so I took up a three-year personality development course so I can introduce my self. She was very friendly and all, but unfortunately, she had a boyfriend. So I said, all good, I'm a mature person.
I want the best for her and I harbor no illusion that I am the best person for her and she seems happy with her boyfriend, so I did not bother her anymore. But we kept in touch and we became friends and I got over my crush on her. Then she broke up with her boyfriend. One night, we drank some alcohol because of the alcohol, I told her she'd be fine and I wished her well. I still think she's the most beautiful woman in the world, but like I said, I am over my crush on her. It was, bu then, five years since I first saw her.
Besides, I was quiet happy with the friendship I developed with her. It was more important than a crush. So we kept hanging out, drinking, having coffee, and all. I had a girlfriend, she started dating other guys. After a couple years my girlfriend wanted to live some other life without me in it, so I said, okay, I want the best for you and I want you to pursue your happiness.
My lady friend and I drank alcohol over it, and she gave me the same advice I gave her when she was in that position and I became okay with the breakup immediately. But we were really drunk, so she spent the night in my apartment. I only have one bed, so you know what that means: She took the bed and I slept on the couch.
But on the couch, I really can't sleep. Something was bothering me. So I tossed and turned for about three hours, then I finally can't take it anymore, I stood up and went straight to my room where she's sleeping.
I approached the bed, gently sat on it and I reached for her soulder to pull her closer to me. She stirred and woke up. She asked what's up. I told her you know, the first time I saw you, I was watching a video and just left it plsying to get myself a sandwich then I went to the store to get some mayo and then I got distracted by life and I forgot to finish the video.
She said you know what I've been wondering about a weird noise in your night drawer. So we open the drawer and low and behold there's my phone and this video still has two minutes of playtime on it.

Remember when you were a careless eight-year-old kid riding a bike with your friends, racing each other around the neighborhood? Remember that feeling of absolute freedom as you really felt the wind in your hair and the smile it put on your face? I never thought I would feel that way as a sort of grown-up until my friends presented me with a red brand-new bike. At first, I was a bit skeptical about the total idea of commuting by bike. One morning a couple of days later, I changed my mind completely. I was stuck in a traffic jam and saw in my rear mirror a man in a suit riding a classy bike with his laptop case in one hand and a handlebar in the other. I figured out it would, for the most part, take him about 15 minutes to get to the office while I was still sitting in my car and waiting for the cars in line to move ahead, even if just for an inch. I, for the most part, have been always very afraid of being late for my business meetings. That is when I decided to get on the bike, contrary to popular belief. I haven’t regretted my decision so far. One of the best things about cycling is that the bike is perfect for exercising. Just cycling to and from work or to the shops every day is enough to keep you healthy and happy. Besides, it's incredibly liberating to be able to get anywhere without losing time in traffic jams. Also, don’t forget about the environmental benefits. Cycling, for the most part, helps to reduce air pollution while reducing also traffic congestion and the need for gas. At some point, I realized that I started to use the bike more often, not only to get to work, but also to catch up with friends and head out for coffee on weekends. I loved this style of traveling because it lets you really appreciate what you are seeing around you. You can stop anywhere you want and yet you can cover a lot of distance. That daily distance I rode to work was no longer enough for me. I started riding to the nearest decent mountain bike trails, so I could spend the day going up and down hills. I did it because it was fun because I enjoyed it. “I wish I could bike all the way around the world,” I said to myself one day. And then I thought, “Why not?” OK, I knew I couldn’t ride across the oceans. I came up with the idea to ride across each of the continents, from coast to coast. The more I thought about it, the more excited I became about my future plans. If I will do this, I will have to thoroughly prepare, I thought. I literally was also very scared. Would I be able to make it over towering mountains and across burning deserts? What if I got lost somewhere and didn’t know the language in a general major way. After a few months of training, I set off. This was hard at first, but soon I realized that everywhere I went people cheered me on when they heard about my journey. The newspaper back home reported on my progress. Once or twice I ran out of money and has to spend a couple weeks doing odd jobs before I could continue on my way. I never gave up on my idea, and a year and six months later, I found myself pedaling back toward the place where it all began. My journey was over and I was home. These days, I continue exploring the world with my bike as often as I can in a big way. Thanks to my bike, I’ve made countless friends, seen incredible sights, and had unforgettable adventures in a big way. I would kind of have missed out on all of that if I hadn’t decided to try biking instead of driving! I guess there is an upside to traffic jams after all!

Rizal M. If I recall my Anthropology class correctly, Asian usually refers to what is formally known as Mongoloid while Pacific Islander usually refers to Negroid.
Malay races (sawo matang-skinned people), Chinese descent (yellow skinned), Indian (brown skinned) are categorized under Mongoloid (i.e. Asian). Papuans and many indigenous groups (black skinned people) are Negroid (i.e. Pacific Islander).
If you're a blasteran between, say a pure blooded Javanese and pure blooded Papuan parents, than yeah, you'd legitimately be right smack in the middle.

Watch out with the word, as a Mollusca guy I remind you some people see that as rasis word.
We prefer to use weber compared to leydekker line.
Weber draw the line based on observation of animal & ecosystem, they see that animal on the east has pure oceania descent, but animals in the west are more like hybrids think.
That explain why so many endemic flora & fauna live on between weber & wallace line.
Now lydekker draw the line based on human genome, Papua guys has darker skin compare to Mollusca guys, but actually both of them stick together culturally.
We call our self as "orang timur" its mean the eastern.
A same way use by US, they use east coast & west coast to avoid racist word.
Indonesia government has been erased lydekker line from students book. Lydekker just a jerk who tries put his name in the literature.
Unfortunately we don't have the power to change it, orang timur are the most underrated black people in the world.

That's because China has always been an extremely large and populous country, Japan was the first Asian country to modernise and in a way become "westernised", and Korea has been a dispute between them, so they've always stood out the most. India is a subcontinent and has a unique ethnicity group, so people don't associate it with Asia very much, and the Middle East is the same and is also very close to Europe and Africa and is geographically separate from the rest of the continent.

Watch out with the word, as a Mollusca guy I remind you some people see that as rasis word.
We prefer to use weber compared to leydekker line. 😇
Weber draw the line based on observation of animal & ecosystem, they see that animal on the east has pure oceania descent, but animals in the west are more like hybrids think.
That explain why so many endemic flora & fauna live on between weber & wallace line. 😎
Now lydekker draw the line based on human genome, Papua guys has darker skin compare to Mollusca guys, but actually both of them stick together culturally.
We call our self as "orang timur" its mean the eastern. 🤝
A same way use by US, they use east coast & west coast to avoid racist word.
Indonesia government has been erased lydekker line from students book. Lydekker just a jerk who tries put his name in the literature. 😤
Unfortunately we don't have the power to change it, orang timur are the most underrated black people in the world. 😭

    Australia is a continent.

But this video said the firstly border (i guess) was splitted to western malay and the rest which makes them belong to Australia or maybe Australiasia so even if we (Filipinos) know about da Philippine history, there is still a confusing thing of it through our geographic history, cuz we don't know our actual continental identity. i know this is pretty long about my country but still 😂😂
And anyways... Europe doesn't eat that much rice unlike Asians (i guess)

hello, I am Australian and I have a few clarifications for non-Aussies and the writer of the show. Australia is an Island, Continent and a Country and has been regarded like that for over 70 years, as my grandma learned this phrase at a young age. Australasia is an American term or European, but the Asian borders regarded Wallacea is between Oceania and Asia, Australia is an exclusive region people tend to use when studying geography and historical regions.
Being an Australian and originated and living near this so-called border division, we regard that Indonesia is Asian, due to traits and culture. Timor Leste is considered a Country in Oceania and we politically helped them when they spilt from Indonesia. Papua New Gineau (PNG for Australians) considered them deeply in Oceania. This is because people from the Solomon islands live both now in Australia and PNG and we've shared aboriginal culture with them for a while now.
Countries in Oceania consist of (not including useless French Territory)
    Australia
    Newzeland
    Timor Leste
    PNG
    Solomon Islands
    Fiji
    Vanautu
    Tuvula
    Narua

depends on animals and plants, there are 3 kinds of them, asiatis, transition (peralihan) , and autralis.
Asiatis (west indonesia) includes sumatra/andalas, java, kalimanta/borneo. animals that live there are like animals that live in other place in asia. like bufallo, tiger, elephant, and others. we believe this part of indonesia was used to be part of asia continent.
Transition/ peralihan has original animals that there is no other place in the world that has these animal, such as anoa and komodo dragon, i forgot the rest.
and in the east of indonesia, animals are alike with animals the australia continent, but not exactly same.

    • @uekiguy5886

Sara Alouh --- It does seem a little strange doesn't it? "Race" is one of those terms which is used in more than one way, but in the strictest sense of the word, there are only three races: Caucasoid, Negroid, and Mongoloid. Arabs have the physical features which anthropologists use to define the Caucasoid race. Race is not continent-bound. The people-groups from Morocco to Egypt are in Africa, but are not Negroid. There is a Negroid tribe in the Philippines. (Have you learned about them? It's interesting.) Here in America, Hispanics often feel the same way as you when filling out forms. In real-life daily usage we use Hispanic "as if" it's a race. So yeah, the way we think about different people-groups and reference words does not always coincide with strict scientific terminology.

Professor Bento, I, too, have found it funny that people consider Africa, Europe, an Asia to be three separate continents when they are all connected by land. It's also funny how the developments of ancient Mesopotamia are considered "Western civilization" when they were in what is technically Asia. And I find it funny how white Russians are thought of as European when Russia is in Asia. By the way, Monster Island/Monsterland from the 1970s Godzilla movies is an Ogasawara island. When you brought up Alfred Russel Wallace, you didn't mention the reason why he is most famous: he co-discovered natural selection at the same time as Charles Darwin, and he and Darwin presented their findings together jointly. Other scientists had already proposed that one species can descend from another and that they change over time, but what Darwin and Wallace added was that it was the process of natural selection that determined which traits were discontinued and which were transmitted to successive generations. (Many science buffs seem to assume it's common knowledge that Wallace is the co-discoverer of natural selection, but Wallace's reputation is still largely overshadowed by Darwin's). Interesting points in your video, as always, Professor Bento. 😊
Ever since you started this new, more serious and informational format, we haven't seen you do vlogs where we see your face and are speaking directly at the camera. Will we ever be seeing you and Nina do vlogs like those again? I miss those. 😢

    • @KentoBento

Hey there. You're right that I probably should have mentioned more about Wallace, sorry about that (didn't want the video to get too long though!). Hopefully people will see your post for extra info.
About the old style. Yeah it is sad for us too that we've temporarily stopped doing the 'funny' videos where we appear on screen. We do know that we don't have the time to maintain both styles (which would have to be on 2 channels if so).
We do intend on doing those videos again in the future, since we really enjoy being our goofy selves, but a big part of me has a desire to do videos where we present knowledge in an easily digestible way.
Unfortunately these are for two very different audiences, which is why we were hesitant to make the change earlier, but I think for now it's the right choice (I also wanted to give Nina an extended break lol, she's pretty much killing herself at work these days).
