TPO antibodies are the markers for being diagnosed with Hashimoto's. Once you get the TPO antibodies within normal range, the autoimmune attack is stopped. After much testing on my own, I found that it was dairy that drove up my antibodies. It went down when I stopped. I am figuring by the end of this year that my TPO antibodies will be within normal range. After that, I am going to wean myself off thyroid pills. It will make my TSH go up to stimulate the thyroid which is a good thing. It will help wake it up. I had to figure this out on my own.
Where are eggs on that list, just out of curiosity? I have found them to be inflammatory and cause me gallbladder problems--even though I absolutely love the taste of eggs and making omelettes and frittatas. Before anyone mentions JUST egg, it is made from the legumes on his no-no list and also contains transglutaminase, which I just recently found out can be bad for celiacs--which I am. Something about it interacting with intestinal villi in a similar way to gluten and increasing gut permeability. 😢 I am thinking of experimenting with making something from konjac starch. We'll see ✌️

Hello Dr. Sung..... fantastic conversation here. Question.... did I miss any mention on ferments.... ? I realize through a beginning phase,8 weeks, it would be sensible to eliminate ferments and later reintroduce perhaps rotationally to better identify tolerances and add back beneficial effects and nutritional uptake along with additional benefit for he gut health. If not previously spoken of would much appreciate including these points of input as well. Many thanks.... over 10 years down the road from a graves diagnosis here.
Fermented foods is typically encourage on AIP diets. With that being said there are some people who have poor gut function and can't tolerate large amounts of fermented foods. With these people they can try bone broth or what we call vegetable mash in small amounts to help with gut diversity.

I only eat meat and drink water, to include raw liver and beef heart, etc. No doubt, it’s very strict way of life, but what else can you do? I would rather live life not in pain and misery, than eat food. So I just eat meat and I actually enjoy it because I feel well, I also take cytomel because I need it.

The AIP diet is meant to be used for the initial phases for about 6-8 weeks then you should add some foods. Try increasing quality fats such as cold pressed olive oil, egg yolk, avocados, almonds, grassfed beef etc. Add one food item a time to make sure you don't have a reaction. Honestly, gluten foods like bread pasta are part of my culture and identity, and of course I am ready to give them up for my health... but going out with friends, eating my grandma pasta are also things that are important. Do any of you guys do this diet with once in a while eating gluten without bad consequences?
I would say yes if you have any autoimmune condition sadly. Avoid gluten grains for life. I don't know where you live but if you can tolerate buckwheat (a seed) you could ask Grandma to try making pasta with that?. It wouldn't work for certain pasta types..but..Worth a try. Soba noodles are 80% buckwheat. Also sainsburys (uk) sells..pea fusilli, buckwheat penne, lentil and chickpea pastas but this would only be OK to try after the elimination phase diet. Otherwise I would stick with sweet potatoes and other starchy (non nightshade) veg. Hope some of that maybe helpful.

Thanks for the video. Is it possible to heal from this disease and stop medication if we keep the strict AIP diet and change lifestyle? They just diagnosed Hashimoto at me and my symptoms are feeling tired all the time and no libido at all. :/
Many patients will feel better on a strict AIP diet but it's important to add other foods at the 2-3 month period, not to lose oral tolerance for foods. Food diversity, especially vegetable diversity, is important to heal. With regards to medications speak to your doctor. I find that it's difficult to get off thyroid medications if a patient has been on them for years.

The glucose (not carbs as such but specifically sugar) that your brain needs will be produced by your own liver in a process known as gluconeogenesis. If you go very low or zero carb, your brain will also start using the ketones produced by your body to fuel it's functioning.

AIP eliminates nightshades. With that being said, the 2 biggest culprits are gluten and dairy. Usually we start patients on an AIP diet but will add foods, in the lectin and nightshade family and observe to see any adverse reactions. The key is to add only 1 food at a time for 3-5 days and look for any adverse reactions. The other way to determine food sensitivities is through testing. I use CyrexLabs and/or KMBO. Best.

Just one question though - could i eat Brazil nuts? was told that Brazil nuts are rich in selenium and thus good for Hashimoto's patients. Yet, in your video, nuts are to be eliminated. Thank you once again and looking forward to your clarification. Blessings
My body became allergic to soy, dairy, corn, legumes, and certain grains. I had new allergy testing, additional new allergies tomatoes and eggs.
I am a Blood type O-. I have found that quite a few BTO people have many thyroid conditions. They have to avoid the foods you have listed.
Dr. Sung, thank you for the video! You are very handsome!
This diet cured my acne problem. Whenever I stray from it the acne comes back.
Seeds and nuts are inflammatory? Are you kidding me?
Just got diagnosed and my only remaining simptom is tachycardia im 25 and have them since i was 18 , i eliminated gluten and dairy i will try the rest for a month as you said hopefully gets better :)
Delayed immune reactions to food can last up to 3 months so keep at for at least 3 months. Also, look up AIP dietary menus. I like thepaleomom.com for recipes. Tachycardia can be a variety issues so I always recommend getting checked out by a cardiologist.

I’ve got AA and I’ve heard that a AIP diet could help me but honestly idk what to even eat…
Dr. forgot to mention: Seafood & Brazilian nut -The best food for thyroid
I don’t eat seeds or shellfish and crawfish
Eggs (chicken, duck, quail, etc) are NOT included on the AIP.
This was so helpful. Thank you so much.
how do you survive without grains and dairy
impossible
There are hundreds of other foods to consume. That's how.
Thank you Doctor this information was very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
It's insane! I don't eat neither sugar nor salt. The only thing that prevents my life from complete misery is an oatmeal with milk for breakfast and some rice for lunch and now you’re saying I can't eat this either? What should I eat in winter since there's no fruit and vegetables? Hope after a month nothing will chage
Salt is not as bad for you as doctors thought. You need salt for electrolytes.
You need to take sea salt . If you stop salt you can get a disorder called hyponatremia and that is a serious situation. I know because it happened to me.
I know I feel better on a plant-based diet and I don’t want to eat animals. I agree GF is important and am not sure how to live without non-meat proteins. Ideas for those of us who do not eat meat for whatever reason?

Do you suffer from hypo-thyroid/hashimoto’s though? Coz I heard IF is largely contra-indicated if you do, so I’d like to check before I try this. TIA
@@jgfreer8322I tried it and even though some symptoms did reduce, I was still feeling tired and out of energy. For some people it is sustainable but for me it is not because just eating meat and no other food groups aka the carnivore diet / Keto was not really doable. But I would rather be on a low-carb diet but not exactly Keto. I also learned to read ingredients and not eating stuff with too much sugar. Basically meats and vegetables with occasional fruits and also limit grains.

Amazing! Well done you!
Any updates since u eliminated diary?
Great information, thank you!
Sir please tell can we eat quinoa, brownriceand buckwheat in diet as i an vegetarian
Paleo saved my life. 😊
We'll see ✌️
Eggs should be avoided on AIP diet.
So if you don't eat meat tuff or wtf? I am SO annoyed with "all the experts" that ALL contradict each other and nobody has an effing solution fml 😣☠️🔫
What am I supposed to eat:/ ???? Most of the avoid foods are basically incorporated in many dishes i like😃 i can eat meats/oils/vegetables/fruits but um thats not really enough since i grew eating the avoid foods..
I've read mixed opinions about cruciferous, like night shades. Can you tell me the research behind the night shade (bell peppers) so I can read that too? Is the research changing?
A lot of confusing information. I’ve read fruits and high glycemic foods should be avoided.
Lower glycemic fruits like berries and stone fruits are better.
Fruits are natural how do you avoid fruits ???
@@copcartel7779 So are many poisons: natural. Fruits are basically sugar and water with very small amounts of vitamins. They do not contain either of the two macronutrients necessary for the proper functioning of your body: protein and fat.
Even natural sugars (from fruits) can be too much. We don't need all the endless supplies of fruits available to us year round. Eat just a few fruits in season. Dark berries are good, avocados, lemons & lime juice added to your mineral water, etc.
Hi Dr... If possible, can you make a video on hyperthyroidism & Graves’ disease, please? (Diet, supplements etc)
Are you bloody kidding me???!!
What the blazes am I supposed to eat then???!!
Hello Dr. Sung..... fantastic conversation here.
Thank you Dr. This sounds like good advice for all autoimmune issues. While mine (M.E) has improved since IF for 3 years and avoiding the main inflammatory foods (grains, sugar, seed oils, A1 dairy, alcohol) still not fully healed. I will try this extreme protocol for a while and slowly reintroduce each food to see which causes a reaction. What is your view on eggs? Also..I though tapioca was a root..not a seed? Maybe I am wrong there...anyway..thank you for freely sharing your knowledge as most GP's here (UK) are nowhere near understanding this.

Same here. Seems we can only eat some fruits and veggies. I was eating rice and nuts. Seems harsh to cut those out also. I will give it a try and look into the book.
What about soaked and sprouted seeds nuts and legumes?
I had to sustain my diet with flaxseeds (omega 3 and protein) plus sesame seeds (in tahini). Eating kale chips from Trader Joe’s has quite a bit of protein. You might be able to get by with some foods from the avoid list. For me, dairy, eggs and soy are out of the question.
Vegetarian is just not healthy. Recipe for cancer. I don't see how you can get away from inflammation with it.

I have the same problem. I was on gluten free, low sugar diet for 11 months and lost so much weight. I went to lower side of BMI. I ate 4 meals a day. My antibodies almost went to normal range. Now my antibodies are worse then ever, not sure how to continue honestly
Does dairy include butter? What about eggs?
You did not mention no sugars
For me, carnivore works and I figured this out years ago before the “carnivore” community became a thing.
Hi Dr. Jin. I was diagnosed with Hashis and with nodule. Eliminated dairy, gluten and soy even refined sugars. My problem now is i lost a lot of weight that i think doesnt look good anymore on me. Any tips? And still feeling a bit heaviness on my throat. What could be the cause Dr? Thank you.
Weight loss can be due overmedication(T4), malabsorption, low calorie intake etc. You need to someone to help guide you if you continue to lose weight. Recheck your thyroid with an ultrasound. I suggest working with a qualified practitioner to help you. Best, Dr. Jin

Hi! Does anyone knows if we have to cut gluten forever?

Is kinley soda allowed?
Tapioca is Aip friendly in the guides. Not sure why that is not allowed here. I do eat tapioca in aip diet. Would you kindly clarify this doctor. 🙏🙏🙏
Look at Array 4 on the cyrex labs website. Tapioca is a cross reactive food to gluten. That is why we eliminate all grains on this diet initially. Now tapioca can be reintroduced after an elimination period to see if you have any reactions. www.cyrexlabs.com/CyrexTestsArrays/tabid/136/Default.aspx

Also no caffeine right?

So helpful. My doctor suspects I have Hashimoto’s and is doing my bloodwork in 1 week. Would starting the diet now, before my blood tests, be okay?? I didn’t know if it would have an impact on that!

Pepper inflammatory? Black pepper is known for its excellent ANTIinflammatory effects.
@@DrJinSung thank you, even if you don't have inflammatory responses to some of these foods could they still be causing an attack on thyroid?

Hey doc, great presentation, so pretty much no carbs for Hashimotos?
Carbs in the forms of low glycemic fruits and vegetables are allowed.
I had a really hard time with getting in carbs when I started AIP. It made me feel terrible. I did decide to incorporate gluten free bread into the diet. It really helped. My dietician also agrees with it as carbs are important for brain function. However, if you have found a successful way to get in enough carbs on fruits and veggies alone, let me know!
@@robin5062-f8p That is why it's so important to do blood work. In my office we do comprehensive testing based on the patient's history and examination. When someone has a hard time getting off "CARBS" it could be food withdrawal symptoms, hypoglycemia, insulin issues etc. depending on their symptoms. Get a proper workup to determine what's right for you. Best. Dr. Sung
@@robin5062-f8p Your dietitian is wrong: it's not her fault as she has been taught to push carbs on people. In reality, carbs are the one NON-essential macronutrient.
The glucose (not carbs as such but specifically sugar) that your brain needs will be produced by your own liver in a process known as gluconeogenesis. If you go very low or zero carb, your brain will also start using the ketones produced by your body to fuel it's functioning.
This is not correct. Carbs are a macronutrient our bodyies need to survive. The true question is How much do we need? And that varies from person to person.

Hello, What about eating nightshade vegetables that are steamed? Thank you great info
Best.
