    Here in America... here is where some of us turn when (I write this in the dreadful year 2020, and the less said of it the better or all concerned) when we need remind ourselves that there is more to life than fear, ugly politics, and self-pity Bach outlasts us all, and I would love to convince people that nobody ever outgrows Bach. 2020 will pass, and Bach will still be here.
    Did I forget to praise this lively performance and the musicians who make it all possible?

    For a long time, this has been the most difficult of the Bach Suites for me to digest, but this performance changed that, forcing me to entirely re-evaluate any recording or performance I'd heard before.

    How Bach would love these musicians...I'm sure the bassoonist would be personally invited home to share in a Bachian supper...repeatedly. I'm also sure that he'd then have further delights written specifically for him...ponder that, if'n you dare. Full of joy, grandeur, and "perfect conversation" for sure, but Bach always gives insights into life's pains and anguish, also...he knew every emotion, and could speak to each eloquently, and purely. No other composer does that so well...every time...without fail. Mozart, Beethoven, and all that followed him knew this...their praises were not idle chat, written and spoken lightly...they were as dumbfounded as we. // NBS, never cease, please.

      Why would you presume to speak for someone with 100x your musical talent, who you know nothing about, and have no specific insight into his personality of who he liked? It's foolish, no one knows whether Bach would like how this is played, you can only comment on how you feel. And, you are not Bach.

    Bach was grumpy and serious, above all that he was extraordinary genius.
    He used his music in both church and the kings courts evenly and mixed them up, he did not care about what they say or criticise.
    He composed his gifted music , which is from ABOVE.
    RIP forever Herr Bach.

Grazie, Grazie, Grazie! 🙏

I think J.S. would be proud to know that musicians from all over the globe love, respect and perform his music 250 , almost 300 years later. It never gets boring. I only wish I had been born in Bach's time and had the privilege of singing in his choir at Thomaskirche in Leipzig.

    How is the conductor not missing notes? I cannot wrap my mind around the combination of directing such a piece and playing at the same time. But what a great performance overall. I think it sounds slimmer and much more refined in this reduced setting. They say you always like the first good rendition of a piece best, but I like this so much. I enjoyed this a lot but I can't get around missing the trumpets and timpani in the beginning of the Ouverture. This D-major just is even more powerfull with them and if you expect them and they do not play it doesn't come close to the majestic entry with them 😢
    And there are parts from the mid 18th century of different scribes that include timpani and trumpets, so I think it is not a farfetched thing.
    But that is my personal view. I respect the decision and performance and it was an interesting insight!

    • @sevenelephants1666
      @sevenelephants1666 3 года назад

      Have you listened to the interview with Mortensen about this piece? That surely makes it clear that the way it is played here is very much HIS way. Which is not at all to deny Shunske Sato's brilliance, both as soloist and as the Society's musical director and principal conductor - though in fact one of the many incidental charms of this performance is the way in which in the most civilized way he is content to be 'just the first violin'. (And in the rehearsal clips seemed as entertained as everyone else by Mortensen's 'intelligent and illuminating antics'. )
