@@TANTRUMGASM I understand what you're saying and for the most part it's true. I guess he needs to word that differently. I'm sure he's a good Santa to his kids.
As an aspiring artist, this Is one of my biggest fears. Of " making it" and not reaping the benefits. But as an artist, I learned to do art for myself and to be humble about my expectations. Really good interview!
Well said. I’ve always been wildly ambitious about my art, believing that every next thing will be a ‘hit’... Repeated disappointment has taught me to be modest and create for myself. Still, I think a part of me will always be like that... I don’t think success will ever take me by surprise.
“Creating a life that reflects your values and satisfies your soul is a rare achievement. In a culture that relentlessly promotes avarice and excess as the good life, a person happy doing his own work is usually considered an eccentric, if not a subversive. Ambition is only understood if it’s to rise to the top of some imaginary ladder of success. Someone who takes an undemanding job because it affords him the time to pursue other interests and activities is considered a flake. A person who abandons a career in order to stay home and raise children is considered not to be living up to his potential - as if a job title and salary are the sole measure of human worth. You’ll be told in a hundred ways, some subtle and some not, to keep climbing, and never be satisfied with where you are, who you are, and what you’re doing. There are a million ways to sell yourself out, and I guarantee you’ll hear about them. To invent your own life’s meaning is not easy, but it’s still allowed, and I think you’ll be happier for the trouble.” - Bill Watterson
Sometimes, the more successful an artist becomes, the more insecure they become. For example, if my latest project doesn’t turn out as well as my previous project, does that mean that I’ve regressed in ability? Worse still, what if I never really had any talent to start with? A lot of writers have these fears. Personally, I do receive an emotional high from being praised, even though I know it isn’t healthy. When I receive criticism, my emotions become drained and distorted. Artists often get too emotionally attached to their creations, treating them like children. Of course, I mainly create for myself, but there’s still a drive, an almost irresistible yearning, to share my creations with the world. Whether this is a good or bad thing, I cannot say.
I had not heard of "California Christmas" until this vid today. Just watched the trailer. I can see why it did well. Looks like a decent, sappy love story: perfect for the Hallmark crowd without being overdone.
Such a hard-to-swallow pill, huh? I kinda relate with the idea of not being in the clouds regarding your expectations ( ofc, it does help that I´ve no succeded as a director nor such so far) while at the same time, as an artist, the "hopes and dreams" for a better... or at least a more interesting life is what ignites my creativity. Necessity is the mother of invention or so they say. I DO want better stuff in my life, therefore, I keep pushing myself forward. Thanks for the video.
@Joseph Rockford @Gari Hs Tell this to my bank account, folks. This is the great illusion. So much "success" is more "on paper" than in the tangible way most of us hope and dream of.
@@BradRushing Granted, the achievements won´t pay the bills. Who wouldn´t want a great hit with endless royalties? On the other hand, you must have at least some great anecdotes/memories out of your whole journey as a director. That´s a life worth living for imo. Maybe the real success was the friends we made along the way. Btw, thanks for sharing some of those stories with us on this channel. Much appreciated.
I think at this point in my life I would settle for anyone to give any of my scripts a shot for nothing. I would just hand it off and say, just make it happen, man... I just wanna see it on the screen. That's it. No money, pat on the back, fame, don't even need to give me credit -- nothing but for my story to be seen. I'd settle for that in a heartbeat.
Hey, email me at darksydespencer@gmail.com. I would love to take a look at some of your best scripts, the ones you spent time on. I mostly work with horror projects, but dramas are stretching legs for me if you will. I would love to try and adapt one of your scripts in a short film! We can email details any further!
i hope to be an artist that has work that makes people either think or happy and somehow launches me to rockstar status. not saying if that doesn't happen and i just "do well" that i wouldnt be happy. but that is what i think ultimately will push me. rockstar status is not what it is ALL about though. Foo Fighters would tell you they write music because they have to, its who they are. it has to be who you are (whatever it is) to have a chance of getting you to "the top"
Expectations. You work your first film and it’s exciting, you work your twentieth film with a huge name, people see it and know it, and it turns out pretty good, but it’s never enough. Those expectations just can’t be met and it’ll almost break your heart.

He’d be a lot happier if he could reap the fruits he grew and get what he deserves financially. There’s so much greed in the industry and everybody is feeding off the writers! Netflix’s contracts are pure rip offs
He doesn’t seem to know what the hell he wants….like most of us…lol…we want to be seen until we are seen without knowing our worth. Sheesh, parts of this was hard to watch.

Well said mate!
I can relate so much. I'm afraid of failure but also of success.

This is what an artist's life is all about ... Unexpected Joy ❤️

Very relatable. Getting a compliment can make me feel anxious, but I still want to share things.

This is beautifully said as an artist I relate word by word

We appreciate the support Jon! Hope you are still out there creating your own work.
