Oh my gosh, I was laughing so hard at myself watching your video! I’m thinking “NOOO I can’t get rid of that!” Then, my next thought was, I would love your donation box😂. Could be why my sewing area looks the way it does -I might need professional help😂. Thanks for making me laugh ❤
Hahaha! Me too! I was thinking ....'Wait I like that ruler, sell it to me.....I can use those black scraps in my crumb quilt box.....What am I thinking....I have 6 quilt tops waiting for me to quilt them.". 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I have to agree..I need mental help..throwing things out is the hardest thing for me. I have a beloved friend who has no problem pitching things out..sewing stuff gets tossed my way always..but her other things I just can't breath when she does it..we laugh about it always. 60 years of friendship of doing it time and again...lol
😂😂😂 Hi Michelle Thanks for the giggles today. That it the mystery as to why we keep so much. “REDUCE YOUR INVENTORY “. This has become my personal motto the past 2 years for my entire home. I can’t even think of how many donate boxes I’ve had. To date I have not missed ANYTHING that I let go. For my sewing room, I have what I call a quarantine box. If after 6 months I don’t pull anything out it goes to a charity. Have a great weekend, appreciate your videos 😊
Just yesterday I filled half a grocery back with foam type stamps. A friend of mine said her Sunday school could use old craft items. These were very cute and never used but I now have plenty of rubber stamps on wood backs.
😲 😱 I'm having palpations! My solution for a crowded sewing room is to take over another room in my house! I'm certainly not going to throw out my Block magazines or panels. I absolutely WILL use those special rulers one day and what if tge piece of fabric I throw/ away is exactly the piece I need for my next project?!😮😯😲
Oh no! Perhaps you just aren’t ready for this yet. I simply have to try to keep my space decluttered because I don’t have any other rooms to take over! I have a friend who is also in your shoes! Lol! I get heart palpitations when I have too much of a mess! I can’t seem to focus! Definitely do what makes you happy!
What a great video! I have several empty spray bottles rolling around (no sprayer attached), so I had to laugh when you brought it up. I plan on decluttering and organizing today. My goal this year is to only buy for the project I am actually working on. I'm also only keeping scraps that I can cut into 10", 5" and 2.5" precuts. It's amazing how much room this saves. I always think I'm a scrap quilter, but in reality, not so much.
Jennifer, You have a great plan in place!!! It is very liberating when we get rid of all the junk cluttering up our quilt room and home! Less inventory also results in less work to maintain it all!
You are immensely likable and you've given me courage to get rid of more of my clutter. I also save paper rolls, magazines, too many scraps. My husband says don't eat the old before the new--I'm going to quit sewing the old before the new!
Correction that Lang calendars-so nice it’s the only one I don’t just pitch. I’m in the process of completing projects so that I can clear by selling things at a craft show. But problem-Joanns has had remnants on sale for 75% off! So inside of outgoing I now have more fabric!
Thank you so much for the inspiration! I have been walking into my quilting room and walking out again, just overwhelmed with all of the stuff and scrapes etc. I've purged my magazines but now I have the umph to dig into the bigger picture! Thanks again!! I now have a plan!!
I am finishing UFOs and donating the to my local EMS as comfort quilts at accident scene! So going out is good! And i am giving fabric and rulers etc to a new quilter all she has is a sewing machine ! also sending her some thread !
I like many of your suggestions for decluttering your quilt space. I would like to suggest that you consider finding a school teacher, usually a K-3 grade or special needs teacher, who can use your outdated calendars and fabric scraps and old threads! They use them for helping make collages on texture projects! And scissors that aren’t pointed. For a future thought, use the denim to make a floor pad for a teacher’s classroom! Or make the floor pad top an ‘i spy’ floor mat and back it with denim! Teachers appreciate all sorts of crafting supplies! If you don’t have little kiddos, call the elementary school closest to you and ask that a teacher call you back and ask what supplies they need that you might be wanting to get rid of (declutter)! Happy Quilting!!!😊
Thank you for such a helpful video!! I could relate to several things, and I just did a de-clutter challenge! Pins..quilt books I've never looked at, unopened specialty rulers - need to do another purge. I took two bags of donations (from other parts of our house) to our local Goodwill yesterday, and it's such a good feeing. Thanks so much - you gave me a lot more to think about!
Thank you so much!! You inspired me to “reduce inventory “ in my sewing/quilting space. Actually gave me permission to purge/donate. Already had a plan to donate fabric to people that will use it. Thanks again!💕💕💕
Declutter = Organization = More Fun Sewing Time = No Stress Zone! This is something I’m working on! It’s a huge project, but I know the rewards will be enormous. Thank you for your tips & encouragement. I know I’ll be so grateful!🤗💝
You will! It is an ongoing process though! Once it is organized you have to work to keep it that way!! It is much easier though in a decluttered space!
@@thesimplequilter7499 I agree wholeheartedly! I'm an extremely organized person - OCD! Life just got a bit out of control - me too! But I am definitely taking back the organization I so desperately need. Thank you for your encouragement! You are helping me a great deal💝
Enjoyed this very much. I just took a boatload of scraps to Goodwill. Also took a few finished projects - table runners, etc., that I’ve grown tired of. I’m a gadget freak for sure and a sucker for blogger recommendations 😂, so I find myself with a lot of gadgets that I end up donating because I find I don’t really need/use them. I struggle with feeling guilty for all the $ wasted - donating to others who will appreciate the products makes me feel better.
Gadgets can be hard to pass up! I think we are all guilty of that! You should have more room in your space for creating! I have a feeling you will not miss one thing you donated!
I'm also having no new purchases this year...I've started two new 'block of the month' projects using my current stash. It's a pleasure to bring out the pristine fabrics that have been eagerly awaiting their turns to shine.
So many good ideas. I have a lot of stuff that I need to get rid of. Batting scraps. I got rid of small pieces, but I still have too much left. I just got rid of a ton of scraps. Feels good to have some rooom to put things.
Thank you; numerous notions that are never used can be donated; I have many from my mother, also, I seem to hold onto dull seam rippers, they need to be trashed.
I give those wrapping paper tubes and my excess batting to friends that do Crosstitch or needlepoint. They like to cut the size they want and wrap batting around it to hold their works in progress or completed works until they can get them framed.
Of course I found this late. But yes! I have to get stuck into my space, once my family move out, and I’ve got space to sort out stuff. I got rid of umpteen magazines and books a while back. I must have so many pairs of scissors and templates etc. I’m a sucker for notions😰 Only blessing is I can’t afford to buy fabric anymore! Otherwise that would be total overload. Why why I accumulated all this stuff is a mystery. But you’re inspiring me to get myself into gear and cull, cull, cull. ❤️🇦🇺
I love all of your ideas, and I need to implement most of them. I do have some panels that I've been holding on to thinking that I'll use them to practice free motion quilting.
Donations are always a great thing to do, but maybe a giveaway to your viewers would have been a better idea for this donation box 😊. They support your channel and whether they are new or used doesn’t matter to them! Maybe next time??🥰
Hi, I really enjoyed the video. It’s funny to know that I’m not alone hanging on to excess and useful and turned unuseful stuff! Your video came up randomly and I’m a subbie now.
Thank you for the matter or fact tips. I would like to know how you store your threaded bobbins. I almost purchased those items that you got rid of in die video. I am looking for suggestions.
Thx for motivating me. I'm so embarrassed by the amt of clutter I have. 20 years ago large iron on rabbits or flowers for the front of my t shirts which l don't even wear anymore and 3 or 4 or 5 quilt kits...3 Bernina and two featherweight and there's only one of me...
Tip for scraps: I use the Accuquilt 9" block dies and create blocks from my scraps as I go along. Then when I have enough, I sew them together, quilt it and donate.
I cut 5" and 3" squares from scraps. and 3" strips of fabrics snd sheets to use as borders and bindings. Also, the small cutting scraps I sew together while watching TV, then cut them into 5" blocks. All these blocks are ready to sew for donation lap quilts.
Where do you donate to? A quild or to friends. Next April, I am going to a quilt retreat in Millersburg, Ohio, and everyone always brings things they want to get rid of in that table gets gone so fast.
If I find a spool of thread that is not Mettler or Aurifil, I get rid of them. Those are the two I use now. I am not saying there aren't other good brands, these are just the two I am familiar with and comfortable using. Sometimes I get rid of these spools if I find one that is breaking easily. Just recently, I was sewing on a binding by hand and the thread kept shredding after just a few stitches. When I pulled on it, it broke easily. This spool was not worth using in my quilts. It is possible it could have been exposed to moisture or the sun too much or it could have just been a "bad" spool. I have only had this happen a couple of times. I have found old spools of thread in my sewing box from when I was a teenager and I threw those away. I hope this helps!
Laura, Thank you for the reminder. We only have a small recycle center where I live but I do try to recycle what is allowed there. I did not even think of it when I was decluttering my quilt room. I usually am thinking most about it when I am in the kitchen. Again good reminder!
I love your inspiration to declutter and be mindful of what you buy… please try to recycle your paper, plastic bottles and cardboard, if at all possible…. It may take a bit of work to do so but we have to do our part to make a better world for our little ones…
As an 81 year old, I realize I won’t live 300 more years. Hence, I’m downsizing while decluttering my sewing room. I cant physically measure piece of fabric, so I don’t know what to charge. Only selling more than one yard of “good” quilting cotton. Please help. All suggestions much appreciated. Thank you
As a matter of fact, I keep the spools with just a little left on them in my repair basket. That way they're handy, and when you need to color match you have a variety to choose from. For the times you only have one button, such as waistbands, etc, you can choose any color that matches the garment. Also, I find that when attaching buttons to fabric craft items for children, it's cute to use different colors of thread on different buttons. Just some ideas/suggestions.
How funny! That is exactly how I end up with a big mess in my quilt room and house!
😂

Spot on. Guilty as heck. The calendar one really made me laugh. Thanks.
You are most welcome!
I will definitely think about tossing some rulers. I now have an accuquilt cutter
Awesome!!!
Thanks for your donation cause we are people like me that trying to learn to saw and it's were I pick up my stuff ❤thanks

Love your quarantine box!!!
You are marvelous. Thank you.
So nice of you
It took me a way to long time getting rid of old quilt magasines, and I HAVE NOT MISSED ONE. 🤣
Me either!
Just yesterday I filled half a grocery back with foam type stamps. A friend of mine said her Sunday school could use old craft items. These were very cute and never used but I now have plenty of rubber stamps on wood backs.
That is awesome! I am sure the kids will love them!

I like your husbands point!!
You must have looked in my craft room to see my old slang calendars. I have years of cat calendars-plan was the same to frame my favorite scenes.
Lol! I fully understand!!
Correction that Lang calendars-so nice it’s the only one I don’t just pitch.
I’m in the process of completing projects so that I can clear by selling things at a craft show. But problem-Joanns has had remnants on sale for 75% off! So inside of outgoing I now have more fabric!

One idea is yard sale. Then you can buy new fabric.
Good idea!!! Thanks for sharing!
Great ideas I need employment some of them
Lol!

Thank you Dianne!

Absolutely!

Scraps of batting can be zigzagged or served together to make larger pieces for projects. Small bits make good stuffing for pillows and dog beds.
Thank you; numerous notions that are never used can be donated; I have many from my mother, also, I seem to hold onto dull seam rippers, they need to be trashed.
Exactly!
This was great
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
I felt your pain as you decluttered and your common sense.
It is an ongoing process for sure!
When I do my decluttering I have a recycle, shred, donate and trash boxes/bags.
Jackie, I need to add a recycle bag so I am not just adding to the worldwide trash problem! Thank you for your input!
I give those wrapping paper tubes and my excess batting to friends that do Crosstitch or needlepoint. They like to cut the size they want and wrap batting around it to hold their works in progress or completed works until they can get them framed.

You are so cute! Just found your site. How often do you do this. I started about a year ago and I dont think I have ever stopped!!😊

Why is that Jackie?
New to this channel, enjoyed it, will subscribe. LOVE the quilt onthe wall!

Where do you donate to? A quild or to friends. Next April, I am going to a quilt retreat in Millersburg, Ohio, and everyone always brings things they want to get rid of in that table gets gone so fast.
We do that also! Just did that at our retreat in July!
What I couldn't get rid of those books or magazines I just can't I just wish I lived close to you I take them books
Lol!
How do you determine what is old thread? What goes into your decision to purge?
If I find a spool of thread that is not Mettler or Aurifil, I get rid of them. Those are the two I use now. I am not saying there aren't other good brands, these are just the two I am familiar with and comfortable using. Sometimes I get rid of these spools if I find one that is breaking easily. I have four Sewing machines, and a Surger in my sewing room. At 85 years old do I need all of them? No lol.
That’s okay!
Hi I would love your donation box for my 10 year old Granddaughter who is just learning how to sew I'm in Pikesville MD thanks Tina
You aren’t the only one who has said that!
If your part of a guild or group of sewers you could offer some of this to the group for donations to guild.. you could also donate to local 4-H club.
We have an annual quilt retreat and we always have a trash to treasure table and I take my stuff there.
Please recycle what you can like containers and cardboard/paper
Laura,
Thank you for the reminder. We only have a small recycle center where I live but I do try to recycle what is allowed there. I did not even think of it when I was decluttering my quilt room. I usually am thinking most about it when I am in the kitchen. Again good reminder!

Sharon, For me, I would look at the age of the fabric and quality then decide. Maybe the friends your quilt guild could help.
You could also look online to see what some are charging for older fabrics.
There must be something we can do with a small quantity of thread left from a spool . Anyone ?
I do not have any ideas yet?
I use for basting (sewing and quilting) and hand stitching (like binding). Also for sewing buttons on, especially buttons that just need reattached.
