I love these ideas about getting "stuff"out of my sewing room. I have been using it for storage and that takes up valuable space.

It was nice to see I'm not the only one who uses the gum containers to throw my pins, needles, rotary blades and other sharp items into before they go to the main trash container.

Love that farm quilt behind you.
I reuse empty drinks containers (Ovaltine) as a sharps bin and glass coffee or cute jam jars for buttons.

I have donated so many quilt books but before I parted with them, I scanned the one or two patterns in them and stored them in my quilting file on my computer. I was amazed at how many magazines/books did not have a pattern I thought I would ever make and getting rid of those shelves of magazines and books made such a huge difference! (I also purge the computer file periodically because, as we know, we don't always keep loving what we loved "back then"!

Colleen, What a great idea! Years ago I would cut out a pattern I liked then put it in a binder. Guess how many of those quilts I ever went back and made? If you guessed 0 you are correct! I still love to read the quilt magazines though and will continue to read them! I keep my magazines limited to one rack and when it is full, something has to go!! Thank you for sharing!

Now when you tell me I have to much stuff in my sewing, 😮, I only buy ALLLLLL the things I “might” need. 😂😂😂😂. You are so right about to much stuff. It’s just so hard to pull out/discard/give away I don’t know why, but I always hear my mother saying, “keep this, you might need it one day”. 😬😬. Thank you so much for giving me permission to purge. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

LOL! How funny! It is hard to let it go but the money has been spent and is gone! I am hoping to reduce what I purchase this year also! I say that every year but I do not like to waste money! I still have tons of beautiful fabrics and kits! As well as scraps! I want to try to finish more UFOs this year too! Thanks for your comments! I think you will feel better once you have gone through and removed some of these items from your room!

OMG Sherry, hearing your Mother saying, “keep this, you might need it one day,” rings so true to me. Actually of both my parents. I think for them it was because they were raised during the depression. They thrived by reusing, repurposing, and just using the unwanted item to repair another item. Which probably explains why I’m a borderline hoarder when it comes to crafting supplies. I can clearly remember while growing up, the first tv we had broke (old tv tube type b&w model) well they certainly didn’t see a reason to get rid of it, instead they used it as a tv stand. They put the new tv right on top of the old one! Never hiding what it was sitting on. When friends came over they thought we were super rich because we had 2 TVs!😂😂😂 Good luck in your decluttering journey. I think the only way I’m going to be able to get rid of anything is if the people who film the Hoarders tv show comes knocking on my door 😂😂😂 Cheers from FL😺

I know this is over a year ago and I just came upon this video. Thank you for doing it and keep on any changes. We moved from a house where my quilt room was 15x14. It is 8x8. I have quilting stuff in storage totes that I have yet to unpack. I did thin out my magazines and books. I also looked through fabrics and some totes. I found UFOs that I forgot about. However, I still like them and intend on finishing them. I have a large glass doors bookcase (2 doors) where we had some books. We purged books and now I store quilts in it. I have another lawyer bookcase where I store quilts and an 83” ladder with 6 rungs. I have quilts hanging on it. But, I still need ideas. Thanks.

You have some great options for storing your quilts! I think storing them in a bookcase with glass doors is great! Be sure to protect them from the oils in the wood though! I bet it looks awesome!

I have come back to quilting after many years of doing other things. My room is small and i donot have as much clutter as yet but will use you tips in a preventative manner. I found however that my family used my quilting room to wrap Christmas gifts this year and i am still finding things like gift tags and ribbons. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for this video! It is true that I have too much. I am in a major declutter mode and have come to realize that it is one small step at a time. Each of your tips are perfect. They have addressed many aspects of my clutter that I was unsure of it being okay to part with. Most importantly, your bonus tip of how it is okay to let go of the broken machines. I have wondered for a long time what to do with them. Sometimes I have worked on other machines and used the old one for parts. Your helpful video has opened up the door to freedom in my quilt room. Thank you! Blessings to you!

I have had a tiny sewing room for 2 years and it is still a work in progress. I find the large square boxes work for medium size blocks and supplies (michael's/dollar tree) I use the muffin holders from dollar tree kitchen section. These have a clear lid and hold small blocks and strips, etc. The top is clear so you can see inside. Those items have helped me become more organized. I really enjoy your videos and always learn something new from them.

Happy New Year Michelle. Hope you had a nice and enjoyable 2weeks. I have started to go through my stash and purge. It does sting a little bit 🥴🤪😂 of the monies spent, but a very valuable and eye opening process. Some of the REALLY ugly fabric I’m using to stuff the pet beds I make. Then other I’m making kennel blankets. The 3rd group will be donated to others that are wanting to learn quilting. I find your honesty refreshing. Have a great week. Peggers

Great video❣️ I actually started purging a month ago and though some may think getting rid of fancy rulers may not be a good idea BUT the ability to make quilts that are more labor intensive is my Fantasy self and then when I look at them the rulers are yelling at me - saying negative words (I know I need to stay with simpler cute patterns - now)😬 too much fabric (especially the ugly stuff) also talk at me…thank you for this video. 😁👍🏻
