It occurs to me that folks pulling up next to you at lights while you’re chatting away, gesturing with your hands and such must pretty much think your elevator doesn’t quite go to the top floor and, as a benefit, they probably let you go ahead while keeping their distance. :) Love your stuff though!

One thing about leather jackets is to make sure to get one that's made specifically for motorcycle riding. True motorcycle leather jackets are made from more heavy duty leather and are sewn together with reinforced stitching and usually have places for back, shoulder and elbow armour. Fashion leather jackets are usually made from lighter, thinner leather and only single stitched so they're much more likely to tear and shred during a crash.

For me it's based on temperature. From about 35 -50 Fahrenheit I wear leather with a thermal lining. From about 50 -70 I wear the same leather jacket without the thermal lining. From about 70 - 95 I wear a perforated leather jacket and over 95 I wear mesh. Mesh doesn't protect as well but it ends up being maybe two months out of the year and I'm one of the very few I see wearing full gear at those temps around here.

Sizing is tricky especially for us Americans. We're more used to looser fitting clothing, I just bought a new Alpinestars jacket and pants and it felt tight at first but I then realized that's how it's supposed to fit (more snug) to keep armor and everything in place if I happen to go for a slide. Picking out clothing is tuff for someone like me at 6'3" 200 lbs. But im liking the European cut clothing for sure.

Helmets are an absolute necessity. I did occasionally ride without one, rarely, when I was first getting into street riding but after a couple close calls I am a firm believer in ALWAYS wearing the lid! Too many people have suffered the fate of this police chief- died from minor accidents due to brain injuries that a helmet would have made a walk away accident. Cheers P[>

If any of you like Carhartt work pants then consider getting the Klim Outrider pants. I have a pair of them and they feel just like heavy work pants, but are made specifically for motorcycle riding. They're reinforced with Cordura for abrasion resistance and they come with D3O CE-Level 1 hip and knee armour. Bonus points because they look like regular pants when you're off the bike and walking around.

Thank you for another fantastic video! I dumped a HD Street 500 and shredded my cotton, denim jeans, but the textile HD riding jacket shows absolutely zero sign. I think leather would have shown some scuff marks. I wear it in Viet Nam (EXTREMELY hot, humid & MUCHO rain) every time I'm on my bike and the mesh keeps me as cool as possible and absorbs zero water - much cooler than leather.

For the best bang for your buck, I got an inexpensive mesh jacket with some armor. It perfect for the summer because it breathes so well. If it gets colder, I wear a large hoodie over the mesh to block the wind. I have a more expensive leather but I never wear it because I’m afraid it’ll get wet.

That's a real issue. I have a few leather jackets, I ride in the rain and the cold. You can water proof them somewhat with snowseal, that's my favorite product. But, if your in the weather long enough, it's going to inevitably soak through. That's were textile wins, not in waterproofness, but in that it dries out so much faster than leather. And you can dry it with heat, so you just need to wait.

I have a secondhand two piece Berik suite on my 250. Because it was the best protection for the amount of money it cost. I mainly only use the jacket even and it's only for commuting to work at max 110kmph and some traffic for 25km back and forth. By going for this cheaper secondhand leather option I could afford a 5/5 sharp rated helmet and decent shoes and gloves

If you oil your leather coat down once a year or so with mink oil, it will never soak any water but it's hot for florida much of the year.

Helite touring jacket- probably the best airbag jacket- mechanically activated which is better than some of the electronically activated jackets like dainese and alpine stars.
For example electronically activated need a regular subscription, all the airbags only activate in race mode(above 50kph) and only a few of the airbags activate under 50 kph.
There are cheaper airbag jackets than helite but have a slower inflation time-.1s vs .5s.

I have a kevlar or tough textile with lots of air zips and back, shoulder, elbow and arm armour, its a little tight as its new but i can move well and it gives me a reason to stick to my goal to lose a few kg 😂. My dad is very happy that I have some good protection cause after 15 years as an ambulance officer he's scraped many bikers off the road even a slow speeds.

Have you ever looked at Motoport gear? It is not cheap at all, but there is nothing else compares to it for protection. Their mesh is awesome, and it will not tear, melt, or shred, period. I've seen their gear after going down at 70+ on the freeway, and you couldn't hardly tell anything happened. Plus, if you crash and it is somehow damaged, they will repair or replace it for free. Awesome stuff!

I REALLY like my Leatt protector. Great on dirt. Probably good for the road as well. It’s suuuuper cool and comfy. But jackets are obviously much faster to take on and off. At the cost of not being as cool.
Great info! For anyone wondering how necessary gear is, go ride a bicycle with no gear. Just got 20 mph and throw yourself on the ground. Now imagine 60mph and a 400lb bike. And obviously some riders ride faster and bikes weigh more.
Gear is kinda expensive but saves your skin and bones. It’s replaceable and even insurance can help, cover your gear in an can’t easily replace skin and body parts. Don’t squid. It’s just not worth it.

How do you feel about the Helmet rating system? Do you have a SNELL higher rated helmet or do you have a basic DOT rated helmet?

    • @ts7857
      @ts7857 5 лет назад +2

IDK if you ever found a proper answer for this, but as it turns out DOT is a crap rating system based on decades old studies that that could probably use some updating. The worst part about DOT however, and the reason why I would put zero faith into a helmet that was only DOT certified is because it’s a ‘self certification’ process. That said, any company can test their own equipment to make sure it falls into the DOT standards and then slap a DOT sticker on that helmet. Not that I don’t trust people but...
As for SNELL I can tell you that if a company wants something SNELL certified, that item needs to be sent to a facility that does testing (tests conducted are as high or as in most cases above DOT standards) on the equipment. Only after successfully passing will a helmet become SNELL certified.

Love mine, too. Any more than 70 and it's too hot. And no armor pockets.

I went down the other day and hit a guardrail in a pretty good textile jacket. Armor saved my joints nothing broken but my arm got real cut up. Needed some stitches and butterfly bandages in a bunch of spots. I'd love to find some jackets that have good puncture protection. That guardrail tore my arm up lol. Any suggestions on materials?

I’m having a hard time choosing a jacket. I’d like to buy leathers but it’s so hot and humid here in Georgia. I guess I’ll have to sacrifice style for comfort.

I'm in georgia too.. I had to buy a mesh but still armored, a bilt. It's rough in that heat, humidity and traffic. Ride safe

southernbelle84 It’s rough isn’t it. What mesh jacket do you suggest? (I’m new to motorcycles)I think I’ll be taking most of my rides in North Georgia near Jasper and Blue Ridge. Just to keep away from the Atlanta area traffic.

What about about using motocross mesh armor jackets .. essentially those you wear under jackets or over a shirt or even under shirts some times.. just been considering it since where I am is getting ridiculous hot and my leather seems to be an entire cow put into a single jacket which is fine except.. it's hot as hell

I remember walking into my bosses office and I was like damn boss something stinks really bad.... He said he couldn’t smell anything doesn’t notice anything that smells bad. So I started sniffing around until I got near his closet and I said it’s in here and then when he opened it there was only one thing in there it was his leather riding jacket and that thing smelled so bad. And he used it to get to work that morning. But he didn’t smell like that and least from a few feet away I couldn’t tell but his jacket I smelled from a closed closet from across a room... so I’ll never get a leather one.

Hey, long time but any chance you could link or just name the jacket and helmet you were using in this video? Really like the black and white color scheme and keeps cars from ironing me on the road for not seeing lol

You are compromising with your safety when you show your jacket while riding a bike it could be batter if you pull over somewhere and explain. Any way good informative videos regards from India,,😀

I’m moving to Phoenix soon for school, so I’ve been looking for a cooler jacket that will accept armor. What jacket are you wearing? Love the looks. Also digging the super plain white helmet.

    The best you can afford.
Not everyone is a bottomless pit.
I bought one for £10 In a charity shop kevlar, amour, all the best bits total bargain.
Only thing I had to do was replace the velcro straps
