Ryan I have an idea for a new video series: A series where you test an old-school motorcycle vs its modern counterpart. Examples could be: Old dual sport vs new dual sport (like the old DRZ and KLR 650 vs the most trending modern bikes in those categories). It could also be old Supersports vs new ones, or old Naked bikes vs new etc. I am personally very reserved when it comes to buying new bikes, since purchase is sky high like an expensive night out, and then depreciation hits you like a bad hangover. Furthermore, I often find myself struggling with finding the increasing appeal of many modern bikes, relative to what they offer over older generations in regards to pure bike-for-money factor. I'd never get a new 600 over a bike from 2-3 generations ago. Prices are ever increasing, but is technology and development following suit? I'd love to see your take on this topic! Greetings from Europe, loving all your work :)
This could be pretty interesting. Like the famous CR500 2-stroke, fearsome machine for sure, but a modern 450cc 4t or a 300cc 2t breaks out the same horsepower and more torque at stock.
All the new bikes have ABS, that alone is worth the premium. My 2018 gsxs750 also has traction control, which is pretty handy in winter or in heavy rain for peace of mind.
In my country, you're mostly forced to wear normal white clothes or you'd probably be melted during city commutes. So, gears like these is only for when you're gonna travel for long distances at a moderately high speed. And at that point, color doesn't really matter...
While black soaks heat worse than lighter colors, it also radiates it better. Hence, Lockheed painted the SR71 black and a lot of people keep painting their car radiators - although the second doesn't really have that great of an effect, as car coolers cool through convection, not radiation.

I have the A-stars airbag vest that zips into your jacket. It kills the airflow because it's basically a plastic bubble around you, but I do feel safer in it having read people's experiences online. I don't wear it when riding locally at inner-city speeds on hot days, but if the temperature is low, it's a nice safety + insulation layer.
Yeah. Going to need something like this. I was in a minor motorcycle wreck yesterday, and my currently-bandaged elbows and knees would be thanking me today had I had some on.
For me, the best riding pants for hot days is the Trilobite Dual, at least when I'm going somewhere on the bike and not just riding for fun. It let's you unzip the bottom half of the leg, so when you arrive, you're basically just wearing normal cargo shorts. It's comfy on the bike too, and it has Kevlar on knees and bottom, as well as armor pockets, which I filled with Seesmart.
Sorry to say, but through all my years of riding, the best jacket I have found for hot weather is my light weight, very open weave Harley jacket with elbow, shoulder and back armor. I live in Louisiana and even on the hottest days I can wear it on or off the bike. It cost under $200.

Prices vary, so shop around, being in the us it’s roughly 245-299usd. I think I got mine over seas shipped for 149€ which would equate to 132 usd. With shipping it was still under 200 buckaroos.
Yep, I have that jacket too and it is pretty awesome. I use it when "allroad" travelling, as body armour. Though not as flexible or lightweight, it will help me in case of a spill on bitumen. And in hot weather, using it as the top layer provides amazing airflow. Just make sure you wear a dark layer underneath or you will look like someone on his/her way to a kinky nightclub...
Love mine too - blessed that they have a women's size. The only top layer I really need. Nice when it's hot and when it's cold I just wear a down jacket over it.
Great tips! I have been riding with a motocross mesh armor “jacket” jacket for years. You can find them for under $100 if you look in the right places and even though the hard plastic armor isn’t flexible, it works excellent in a crash and then you get to look like mad max
I found this quilted i think model fiber vest in a cheap basket. You soak it in water and it keeps you cool for a few hrs. I love it. Keep your finger off that TRIGGER!!!!
Been wearing the field armor 👕 since I seen your video and my mesh was too hot in Texas Summer, prob about a month now. It is game changing and amazing. I can't say 1 negative thing about it, highly recommend! It's like wearing nothing at all, but I feel so much more protected than just my spine guard. Just a heads up: I'm 5'10" 165lbs, average build. I ordered a medium and like how it fits.
Moose armoured mesh long sleeve shirt with a S&S full kevlar jersey overtop. Combined the two garments offer excellent protection and the breeze does get through.
Squids usually do it cause they're poor and that kinda money isn't something they can spring after getting a bike and insurance. Which often just leads them to getting unsafe "protective" gear. So I do appreciate your videos, informative as ever.
Awesome video I live in 100 percent humidity in the summer and being a squid is pretty much a “I have to” kinda thing. I’m definitely gonna check that Icon shirt
I may have nailed that one first try. For whatever reason, I find the long and complicated bits easier to deliver. Then I'll waste 10 takes screwing up "Hello, I'm RyanF9."
My favored riding pants for hot summer days are the Assero Tropical Motorcycle Pants. Looks like jeans, is actually 1000D cordura, and lets the air through. Designed for northern Thailand. I've actually gone down in them, in Thailand, at around 30mph, and they're none the worse for wear, and neither am I.
Like others said, Knox Urbane Pro is CE compliant. Would love to see a comparison between these two or even a “lab” test. Don’t know why, I feel you missed a nice opportunity to feature the Urbane Pro in this video. Awesome channel, please upload more videos! I need my fix.
Might wanna check out Bohn riding armor. They have a cool mesh that flows air well and I've crash tested it, saved my right leg from the knee down. I'm NOT a salesman just a convinced user.

Hey hey! great and informative video as always Ryan. Will check those Scorpion jeans, they look awesome and you convinced me with the kevlar point. That said I would add something to your open helmet advice... if anyone wants to ride an open helmet with no visor, chances are that you can collect bees and hornets in your rides...and from my own experiences, it makes the ride quite interesting in the wrong way :P I have suffered this issue (and the collateral stings) 3 times (2 in Spain, 1 in Australia). One of them inside my jacket when the bee got in through the space between my neck and the jacket all the way to my clavicle, the other two inside my helmet which, in both cases, the bee managed to crawl all the way to my ear using my sunnies. I love to ride with the visor up but...even with glasses, take into account that it brings some risks. Ride safe!
You know, my bike almost got stolen just before Xmas and even though she is currently off the road, and watching these video's bitterly depresses me because I want to ride.....Ryan is just too damn entertaining!
Please, do a episode on All Year Gear for around the world travelers. I feel like, I have not other choice than buying Revit or Klim 2000$ Sets. Is there a Budget option without a big compromise?
I wore an Alpinestars perforated leather jacket over a wifebeater in the dry LA heat and was comfortable enough. But it felt so good to ride in just a t-shirt and sunglasses.
I have an Icon jacket. Crashed on a compacted gravel road on my enduro going 45. No excuses, but the targeted impact zone idea worked out and both me and my jacket are alright. I somehow managed to only land on them and nothing else so I trust it 👍 I wear saftey glasses you can buy in bulk from tractor supplies and such for eyes. They stop grinding wheels that shatter in your face a rock has no chance.
I got a pair of the Scorpion pants, and they suck so much. They're so baggy that there's no chance the knee padding would actually stay on your knees in an accident, and the knee pads pockets are on your upper shins. It's a "one size fits most" failure.
Good video, as always. I learnt my lessons the hardway in my 20s whils riding in Thailand. However, I live in The Cayman Islands where the cagers are the worst drivers I've ever come across - riding here in anything less than full protection is not really an option for somebody who doesn't work a desk. I wear Rev It Air 3 Jacket and Pants, Alpine Star summer gloves, and Sedici Street ankle boots. My helmet is a Sedici Strada II. My riding temperature range is 24-29C in winter and 28-37C in summer - I have mostly white gear to reflect heat away. Overall protection is good, weight is low, ventilation effective, and if standing around I sweat about as much as I would in my veterinary scrubs. I wear a hiking base layer and boxer shorts beneath the gear and change when I get to work. I'm never grossly sweaty. As speeds below sustained 45mph I have my helmet cracked just a little and lift the visor fully only when stationary. Above 30mph the ventilation generally is good enough whilst above 50mph the helmet feels nice and cool. Overall, this protection cost me about 1200us and I am happy from a comfort, range of motion, price, and safety POV.
I saw a fellow taking a road trip on his Gold Wing a few summers ago. He was clad in shorts, possibly swim trunks, and flip flops and no shirt. All I could do was wish him luck as he got on the interstate and headed south.
That Icon riding shirt is crap. It doesn’t matter if there is Kevlar in spots that matter. LOL, it’s sown to basic polyester or other crap fabric and those pads/Kevlar will rip right off exposing your skin. Wearing an outside layer is a must with that shirt and you better make sure that outside layer isn’t just a jersey
Armor tops are only as good as the material and stitch work holding the armor together. The issue is that on the street, pavement tends to pull and tear the layer in the opposite direction that you are going. Armor is only good for initial impact and even then it can move and expose your body to unwanted forces. The best solution is a well fitted jacket that uses mesh in specific areas to keep you cool but doesn’t compromise in areas that take the most tearing force and keeps the armor in position on initial impact.
After a bout a hundred years klim has finally decided to make a silver with no black at all. They had white and yellow, but the shoulders and upper arms were always black and only the belly and back (non directly sun exposed areas) were white or yellow so there was significant solar gain from the full sun exposed black parts.
Actually just purchased a Knox armored shirt recently, for those hotter summer days. Still have a Contra 2, and Motörhead 2. Also like the idea of Kevlar leggings + armor. Some people say that Kevlar leggings are rather warm at times but I’ve worn them around the house and even while doing some yard work under a pair of jeans. Now I wouldn’t wear them if I was in a more humid climate, used to live in SC, and the thought or trying to wear gear out there in the middle of summer scares the hell out of me.
I thought the same, Schoolboy error ! All the non US countries in the world don’t see the benefit of shooting each other, the fools ! We don’t have any practise of trigger discipline. Don’t need it. Don’t need shooter drills in schools either. What are we thinking !? 🤦♂️

Ryan, I have two words for you: Trigger Safety. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNLESS YOU'RE READY TO SHOOT! Points added for using a gun as a prop for your video adding to the cool factor. Points deducted for neglecting the #1 rule in gun safety. Otherwise a great video. Keep 'em coming.
Retro Amateur Africa twin and squidding can never coexist like KLR and drag race or Vstrom and bike nights :) that AFrica twin scenario must be a theft in progress lol of course I am exaggerating a bit :)
I really like the look of the armored shirt, and I totally buy the logic of how the armor can work and be missed by the standards (those being a kind of lowest common denominator). Apparently, these are not available, so I contacted ICON, and received a help response, that these will once again be in stock come mid-August.
I have a Joe Rocket all mesh jacket with armor that I wear all summer. I have seen a video of one that was crashed at about 60 MPH, and all the damage was on the padded areas, and resulted in almost zero road rash... you want it tight so it stays where you want it... better to wear mesh than go full squid with shorts and tank top...

Sweet, let me go pick one of those ICON compressions shirts up, since we are having a hot summer for the first time in 10+ years.
OUT OF STOCK...
Squids usually do it cause they're poor and that kinda money isn't something they can spring after getting a bike and insurance. Which often just leads them to getting unsafe "protective" gear. So I do appreciate your videos, informative as ever.
Has Ryan finally been hitting gym lately ?
Or his bike is giving him a hard time 😁
Looks like a malnourished girly man, but hey, he has the best content. Gym? Nah man.
Neo Smith you seem like a great person
@@rhino2348Many would agree with you yes.
2:55 he's been hitting the bong lately
He certainly looks a bit more fit, my guess is he's been working out, either at home or gym.
The Icon AF you dropped at the beginning is the jacket I wear daily in South Florida. It works.
I will look into armored shirts.
Next video: Ryan just reads an owner's manual.
I'm still watching and upvoting.
Awesome video I live in 100 percent humidity in the summer and being a squid is pretty much a “I have to” kinda thing. I’m definitely gonna check that Icon shirt
How many times did you have to do that ATGATT KGB line Ryan?
We definitely need some blooper reels
I may have nailed that one first try. For whatever reason, I find the long and complicated bits easier to deliver. Then I'll waste 10 takes screwing up "Hello, I'm RyanF9."
What does the kgb stand for?
@@fahmi9 Ask the Russians that question.
Ryan i normaly not comment in RUclips, but you have realy put a lot of work in your Videos, they are really the best informative ones.
Super relevant content
Of all the people to post _this_ type of comment..
Hey bro... Your comedy is excellent.
Your helpful motorbike tips are priceless.
Once again, you manage to make me laugh while you educate me🤣
I got a cooling west. Works wonderfully. Soaked in water, lasts for 3 - 4 hours in strong heat. Keeps you comfortable in you regular summer gear.
Commenting for algorithms 💪💪
I'll join the train
@@oblivion0077 Also I
My favored riding pants for hot summer days are the Assero Tropical Motorcycle Pants.
I have been wearing an knox urbane pro now for a year now, when needed combined with a revit dirt jacket. I'ts almost perfect!

I feel like the icon shirt would slip right off of you in a slide
yeah only helps for the impact but after that your skin is on the asphalt
Fun and entertaining, with the educational expertise you can only get at FortNine. Love it, still watching from Queensland, Australia.
Exactly the vid I've been looking for!
I have a Vanson Mesh jacket. It's a 1000 denier mesh body with elbow, shoulder, and back armor, all backed with leather at the impact zones.
6:13 "Oh hai Ryan"
6:09 He's Quentin Tarantino... now we know why his vids are quality
I love just about everything you all do, but nothing beats a good chalkboard.
Just commenting to help out his video it's that good
I have an Icon jacket. Crashed on a compacted gravel road on my enduro going 45. No excuses, but the targeted impact zone idea worked out and both me and my jacket are alright. I somehow managed to only land on them and nothing else so I trust it 👍
I wear saftey glasses you can buy in bulk from tractor supplies and such for eyes. They stop grinding wheels that shatter in your face a rock has no chance.
Superbly well researched, written and presented as usual. Thank you RF9!
I got a pair of the Scorpion pants, and they suck so much. They're so baggy that there's no chance the knee padding would actually stay on your knees in an accident, and the knee pads pockets are on your upper shins. It's a "one size fits most" failure.
That trigger discipline though.
The world needs a feature length Fortnine production...
“Add more layers than Paula Deen’s Mac and cheese” 😂🤣😂
"the EU requisite lack of imagination" I laughed so hard.
Why not just buy a mesh motorcycle jacket then?
Are armoured tops not safe to wear alone?
5:20 trigger finger, Ryan
Actually just purchased a Knox armored shirt recently, for those hotter summer days. Still have a Contra 2, and Motörhead 2. Also like the idea of Kevlar leggings + armor. Some people say that Kevlar leggings are rather warm at times but I’ve worn them around the house and even while doing some yard work under a pair of jeans. Now I wouldn’t wear them if I was in a more humid climate, used to live in SC, and the thought or trying to wear gear out there in the middle of summer scares the hell out of me.
5:18 where is your trigger discipline! This triggers me you beautiful Canadian 😂
Booger hook off the bang switch!
Hand someone a toy gun. Trigger finger straight? American. Anywhere else? Not American.
I thought the same, Schoolboy error ! All the non US countries in the world don’t see the benefit of shooting each other, the fools ! We don’t have any practise of trigger discipline. Don’t need it. Don’t need shooter drills in schools either. What are we thinking !? 🤦♂️
@@nickc6882 Your probably never going to get shot at if you are in america and also places like Britain have a insane amount of knife attacks. A lot of Americans also don't know trigger discipline themselves. It is very important to know trigger discipline also if you are using a real gun or a airsoft gun since you could hurt someone or could break something you like.
Dainese also have jeans with the aramid woven into the cotton. They are warmer than usual jeans but better than most other "layered" trousers.

AHHH! GET YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER!

This American also shuddered at the trigger discipline lol
Get your racist avatar/username out of office?
a good sunglass that is perfect for motorcyclists is Flying Eyes Optics I use them when flying with those big ass head sets and its a game changer in comfort.
It's an Airsoft gun not even loaded
Nice! The summer heat is one of the big factors that stopped me from riding on streets
Best summer helment: Off-road helment.

Ride naked bikes not bikes naked :)
saw a Kid once, was driving an africa twin, just regular beach shorts and no shirt or helmet.
Retro Amateur Africa twin and squidding can never coexist like KLR and drag race or Vstrom and bike nights :) that AFrica twin scenario must be a theft in progress lol of course I am exaggerating a bit :)
Great job Ryan it’s amazing how far riding gear has come and no doubt this presentation was only the tip of the iceberg.
“I could be pregnant and it would fit, IF I could be pregnant”
I really like the look of the armored shirt, and I totally buy the logic of how the armor can work and be missed by the standards (those being a kind of lowest common denominator). Apparently, these are not available, so I contacted ICON, and received a help response, that these will once again be in stock come mid-August.
5:22 you need to work on your trigger discipline ryan
I have a Joe Rocket all mesh jacket with armor that I wear all summer. I have seen a video of one that was crashed at about 60 MPH, and all the damage was on the padded areas, and resulted in almost zero road rash... you want it tight so it stays where you want it... better to wear mesh than go full squid with shorts and tank top...
"If I could be pregnant"

That icon is hidios. I'd go with knox armors equivalent every time. Thanks for all the insight as always Ryan
