"DOT is a *dinosaur,* we just dropped an *asteroid* of a video on it, in hopes of pushing the outdated standard towards *extinction* " You put a lot more thought into your scripts than I pick up on.
DOT stands for "department of transportation" here in the states. And yes it's an outdated extension of bureaucratic inefficiency, you'd come to expect from a United states government agency.
I am a mechanical engineer, and I 100% agree with you. The information you gave on different kinds of plastic (like thermoplastic, I specially liked that one) is as accurate as one can give. Please keep making informative videos, you and your team are really good at it.
@Ken Mason by saying “highway bars”, do you mean “crash bars” ? Assuming so, I can’t understand how they would have prevented the PD officer from getting “launched” after T-boning a car …. you’d expect him to get launched from that sort of impact with, or without highway (crash) bars.
@Ken Mason Highway bars and crash bars are the same thing. Their main use as far as I know is to create a buffer between the tarmac and the motorcycle so that a rider's leg won't get crushed under the bike. So I think you might have been right in saying that it was a budget justification, because they won't stop you from getting launched like a hot potato when you hit something hard enough to travel 60ft lol I could be wrong though, I'm no expert

@@gwot I think they're just trying to make the customers buy most expensive stuff. And i dont deny that all this kevlar, carbon, goretex etc. is good, but is it SO good or SO better than others to pay such a money for it?
To explain clearly what I mean: for example a jacket with goretex membrane (removable) costs 50% more than jacket with other membrane and 3x more than jacket with no membrane (european market). Instead you can use a rainsuit for 1/10 price of a goretex insert, which is good, but really not so perfect (practicaly tested). So if u have an unlimited budget to spend for that fancy fabrics it's ok, but otherwise...
Hey, if manufacturers can't take criticism and adjust appropriately & TRUTHFULLY, then they don't deserve to be in business. Thank God for people like Ryan and FortNine.
8:36 a correction and an important addition for anyone getting deep into standards. For high level protection look to see if the clothing meets EN13595 either in part of in full. Clothing made to prEN17092 has different levels starting at B (no impact protectors) A (same as B with impact protectors added), AA - medium level protection - and AAA which is high level. Even though prEN17092 is a newer standard, even AAA prEN17092(pr refers to it being a provisional standard) is (currently) inferior compared to EN13595. For the best, look for fully certified EN13595 clothing.
I’ve worked in the powersports industry for well over 16 years and this is hands down one of the better videos I’ve ever seen, possibly the best. I’ll be sharing this with beginner riders to give them the tools they need to make choices on their own and not rely on reviews alone.
This is bloody well done. I've always enjoyed the work from Ryan and the team behind these. Nice sets, good on the road audio, good editing, well written, nicely shot and Ryan presents really well. But this is just so informative, useful and specifically engaging. As someone that analyzes social media for retail I have to say this sets the bar high. Fantastic job guys.
I recently got my rider learner's permit - had to do a couple of days of very light instruction. These videos should be required viewing. Seriously, mate, you're doing incredible work here and actually helping to keep people safe. Thank you!
Even though this was 5 years ago, I cannot express how much your videos helped me with being a much more smart and safer motorcycle rider. Thanks for these!
They should add this to motorcycle safety courses. It's informative, well-made, and so easy to pay attention to that I watched it for fun in my leisure time.
Well done ! I enjoy your videos a lot. Just my two cents about helmets : Poly-carbonate is actually a very good compromise. The "thermoplastic" is really special as it wont crack under shock but rather bend and absorb lot of impact energy. The real drawback is that it is a bit chemical sensitive and mostly it cracks under long time stress. It means if something is bolted too tight or riveted to the PC shell it may develop cracks and may already be broken on the day it has to protect your head. As any plastic stuff the poly-carbonate is not "bad" itself but has to be used by skilled helmet maker. Another item that may make a significant difference is the "noise" in the helmet. No helmet is perfectly sound proof (fortunately) but some are badly noisy. A perfect helmet should allow external noise in (to a degree) but mostly NOT ADD any more. Sorry if my English is not perfect but it is not my mother laguage

I've been watching a number of videos, and I think this is the one channel I'll be growing with for quite a while. Others aren't breaking down topics like this all around the knowledge needed to make informed decisions at the start of motorcycling- the time when informed decision making can save money and life. So, great job on this channel.
They're all the people who have the helmet he was making fun of... and have been telling all their friends "It's the best helmet made... and only paid $99 for it!! I'm a REALLY smart shopper!"
The dislikes are from genuinely informed people.. “Ece offers less impact attenuation” That is misleading. Ece helmets are more flexible/less hard then Snell helmets (Snell mandate higher tolerances for penetration and thus require thicker and harder shells to pass), these means Snell helmets are heavier and stiffer, making Ece helmets lighter and softer, more flexible, meaning they ATTENUATE impacts much better, this leads researchers to believe Ece helmets are better because they absorb and attenuate impact forces to the brain, which statistically account to the majority of head injuries to riders, unlike penetrating sharp objects that account to a very little percentage of injuries, which makes Snell helmets a little out of focus, because in trying to be very strict about making hard and thick shells, they have made their helmets heavier (which is not good in a crash) and harder (which attenuate less impacts and transmit more forces to the brain). Fourtnine should get informed before misleading people
Ryan, I have been periodically following your channel for a couple of years, and the research you put into your presentations is wonderfully useful, helpful and deeply appreciated! Thank you!
As someone completely new to the world of motorcycles, I really appreciate the frank language you use in this video. A lot of people like to equivocate when talking about this sort of thing and it just makes it harder to get good information.

Very well researched (more than one could say for some!), highly informative (more than one could say for some!) and superbly presented (more than one could say for some!). Thanks, Ryan, I love your videos and I look forward to your continuing motorcycle rider assistance.
Just took my licensing test this weekend - haven't even started buying gear or a ride yet. RUclips randomly recommended a video of yours last month, and I've watched dozens of them since then. Thank you very much for making these! They're easy to watch and have a bunch of great info.
Second commentary here. Want to thank Fortnine for making a change in my motorcyclist life. The teachings about gear safety and test standards really made a difference. And I have a suggestion for a video. To clarify suspension types, adjustment and settings on different terrains. Big thanks keep up the videos eill always have my thumbs up.
CE garments will be tested with the Darmstadt machine moving forward. It spins at a certain speed (~25 - 120km/h depending on the rating level) then drops the fabric samples onto concrete until they stop. You’re my hero, Ryan! You rock, young dude!! Btw, here’s how the expression goes: “if we teach them how to fish, maybe they’ll be able to pay their mortgage on time”.
Really good stuff! One topic on helmets that you didn't cover: MIPS (multi-directional impact protection system), basically a layer letting the inner and outer shell move independently in a crash, with the aim to reduce rotational forces. It seems like a great idea, but does it work? What should people look for or avoid in a MIPS helmet?
everyone has purchased a junk helmet...that's how you learn...go for a $200 plus helmet and check the specs. i like scorpion bc they are cheap and well rated... Thank you for wearing a helmet these guys in the u.s. wear baseball caps....so dumb. I like my track rated helmet
Just bought a Transalp. Now to buy the gear. I knew this was the place to go. This is a great video for understanding the marketing and science behind motorcycle gear.
Mooze Ahmad , I keep thinking the same thing. I want to give back and show appreciation with my patronage but being in the US, I keep getting rerouted to RevZilla lol.
Hey man, really appreciate your videos. They are very informative. I'm curious if you have done one or plan to do one on how to stay cool while riding. You mentioned vents in this one which sounds good but can actually make you hotter. Do you think this is a topic you light dive further into?
Fantastic info and video. Here in Brazil there are so many crappy options and they definitely love to trick costumers into buying "CE" stuff. Dude, I'm certainly spreading the word for this video, it should have at least 10 million views because this helps save lives.
Revzilla is probably a way bigger carrier of bike products, and probably with the same amount of knowledge, but fort9 was the one to share this knowledge. Thank you.
Sometimes, its not easy to follow for non native english speaker, but awesome videos. Great Job. Thanks for such value information and top quality videos.
Get one. Its a joy. God I love my bike. It doesn't need to be something fast or flashy and you will still have fun. Hell, you can have fun on a 50cc moped. But I wouldn't suggest it.
I don't even have a motorcycle licence, so I have no real reason for watching this (other than thinking about getting an e-moped) but your videos are extremly well made and entertaining. 🐻👍🏾 ...and of course informativ. I like the simplicity with the chalkboard and all but on the other hand the professionall editing and camera setting.
I just returned a jacket to Oxford in the UK because I bought it thinking it was a motorcycle jacket CE rated. I was curiously looking at the labels when it arrived and could not find a clear CE rating related to the overall jacket, only the armour and optional armour. So after checking their website it was unclear and I came to the conclusion that it is not CE rated at all. It wasn't a cheap jacket either!
Great guide for those beginning to buy good gear! The CE certification topic is a messy one due to some manufacturers (not all) misguiding consumers with what is CE certified and not. A classic example is the use of those generic soft pads being marketed as "CE armor" or "CE tested"; such pads are NOT certified to the EN 1621 sub standards. If thou shalt allow me, here's our guide to all CE certifications: www.mcgearhub.com/motorcycle-gear-guide-frequently-asked-questions/#Motorcycle-gear-product-any-good Disclosure: it's our site & the guide is based in our industry's deep experience. Cheers!
This is awesome. I need to buy a helmet, gloves and boots for my riding class before I get my license, and I was searching through the gear online and was completely lost as to what was good and what wasn't. It's great when someone breaks down a hobby to a beginner, because lots of people will take advantage of you or lie.
Acording to that the only 5 star all green impact zones helmets I could find under 200$ are: Mt matrix (that is difficult to find in italy) Nitro aikido (that I can't find in italy Viper rs 1010 (that I can't find in italy) Caberg duke (that it's a modular) I think the sharp rating list is "obsolete" i can't find much on there.... I really need a new helmet, please help!
Get one from reputable manufacturer such as HJC, Shoei, ARAI etc. that fits your head best. A less safe helmet with perfect fitment compared to a loose helmet with perfect safety ratings is better.
HJC IS -17 5/5 very nice helmet. Do not be tempted to buy the AGV K3-SV, its not bad, but its more money for less protection. Blame valentino rossi and the marketing for that. I am changing my K3 for an IS-17 soon
Man. I love you. Keep up the good work. I’ve been tuning in here and there since I taught myself to ride a bike during lockdown 2020. Nerd up. Let’s go!

Lol this channel is so well written and executed. You guys impress the heck out of me everytime.
I don't even ride motorcycles yet, but I am in love with your channel. Keep up the good work boss.
honestly I would watch any content created by this guy does a fantastic job of breaking things down while staying humorously light and funny but yet getting the point across and at the end of the day informing us empowering us etc to make less than shitty decisions with our hard earned money! fantastic please keep creating I'll keep watching.
What should people look for or avoid in a MIPS helmet?
i think mips has been covered in his other video
search for 'What's Inside the Best Motorcycle Helmets of 2021?'
I prefer NIPS
Wish I had found this before I bought my brand new DOT rated helmet fml
everyone has purchased a junk helmet...that's how you learn...go for a $200 plus helmet and check the specs. i like scorpion bc they are cheap and well rated... Thank you for wearing a helmet these guys in the u.s. wear baseball caps....so dumb. I like my track rated helmet
Even a DOT helmet is better than no helmet 🤷♂️
@@208Concepts It's my only consolation ;(
I love your content, dude! It's like when I was little and used to watch PBS and I'd learn stuff and not get bored while watching it.
this is genuinely such an outstanding channel, not even in terms of motorbike content, just on youtube
"Define dry" kills me every time xD
I feel like I’m at school listening to science talk. But I’m actually listening!!!!!!
I wish I had a class in school like this, he’d make a great teacher.
ML - He IS a great teacher. I learn a lot from him and I've been riding since before Ryan was a twinkle in his father's eye!

Just bought a Transalp. Now to buy the gear. I knew this was the place to go. This is a great video for understanding the marketing and science behind motorcycle gear.
Fantastic video man. Thank you so much. Safety is my first priority. Im buying all gear before i even look at bikes. This was very helpful!
You are beyond words of generosity and intelligence. Thank you
Mooze Ahmad , I keep thinking the same thing.
"sneaky bastards!" LOL this is my favorite youtube channel, keep up the great work!
Fantastic info and video. Here in Brazil there are so many crappy options and they definitely love to trick costumers into buying "CE" stuff. Dude, I'm certainly spreading the word for this video, it should have at least 10 million views because this helps save lives.
Years later, this video is still immensely useful for someone just starting with bikes and protection. Thanks for all the fish!
Never feel like I wasted my time watching your stuff - thanks - you rock
I come back to this review Everytime I am shopping for gear
This is the best video I've ever seen on RUclips.
I love your use of words, very intellectual and witty!
Revzilla is probably a way bigger carrier of bike products, and probably with the same amount of knowledge, but fort9 was the one to share this knowledge. Thank you.
One of your best videos, Ryan. Thanks for the lesson.
You my friend just made me favorite a RUclips video. Haven't done that since 09'.
When it comes to helmets, I have to have ECE by law, but I go by a helmets Sharp rating.
Same here
Sometimes, its not easy to follow for non native english speaker, but awesome videos. Great Job. Thanks for such value information and top quality videos.
Just ordered a complete set based on your advice! Don't ride a bike though but it was mighty interesting to watch!
Give a man a fish and he will eat for one day.
Give a man a fishing rod, and he will break it into wood and sell it for a fish.
Or meth, in which case, he'll no longer be hungry.
Don't teach a man to fish and you can eat fir a life time. He's a grown man. Fishing isnt hard.
Give a man a fish, and he'll probably tell people he caught it, and sell tickets to the place where.
Damo: That there's an entrepreneur!
saddlebag And a talentless liar, yeah an entrepreneur.
I don't want to buy any gear..in fact i dont even own a bike..but i still watch all your videos idk why.
Get one.
Bro you are amazing. Not only youtube, but your wisdom. I admire it. Respect
Cheers!

@@FortNine …. FUCKING EH ?
I wish I had seen this earlier before making purchases :(
This is awesome. I need to buy a helmet, gloves and boots for my riding class before I get my license, and I was searching through the gear online and was completely lost as to what was good and what wasn't. It's great when someone breaks down a hobby to a beginner, because lots of people will take advantage of you or lie.
This is actually one of your better videos which is phenomenal because all your videos are amazing it's being saved for future reference
What do you think of the sharp rating?
Acording to that the only 5 star all green impact zones helmets I could find under 200$ are:
Mt matrix (that is difficult to find in italy)
Nitro aikido (that I can't find in italy
Viper rs 1010 (that I can't find in italy)
Caberg duke (that it's a modular)
I think the sharp rating list is "obsolete" i can't find much on there.... I really need a new helmet, please help!
Get one from reputable manufacturer such as HJC, Shoei, ARAI etc. that fits your head best. A less safe helmet with perfect fitment compared to a loose helmet with perfect safety ratings is better.
If it doesn't fit right it won't be able to work right.
HJC IS -17 5/5 very nice helmet.
Do not be tempted to buy the AGV K3-SV, its not bad, but its more money for less protection. Blame valentino rossi and the marketing for that. I am changing my K3 for an IS-17 soon
SHARP ratings are legit, but not always useful. They only have the time (and money!) to test a fraction of the helmets out there. ~RF9
daaamn dude, you've been making some amazingly good videos lately! keep it up, please! :)
"We can poke a peephole through the wall of bullshit....." - I am officially commandeering this saying from now on.
Man. I love you. Keep up the good work. I’ve been tuning in here and there since I taught myself to ride a bike during lockdown 2020. Nerd up. Let’s go!
This is one of my favorite videos of your channel, guys! I've watched it several times actually. Keep up the good work!
