In this episode we take a look at some facts, secrets, and history of the Conker series. Conker is an action-adventure franchise created by Rare, and initially developed for the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy devices. Although the first game in the series was family friendly and made specifically for children, the series' later games were known for their mature content, such as violence, sexual innuendo, and strong language. The franchise has sold over 2.15 million units including Rare Replay sales.

Nintendo's strict "family friendly dogma" is just a creation of the public and media, it's not actually true. While Nintendo themselves like to stick with a broad audience, they're not opposed to adult content. That image stems from the '90s, mainly with them censoring Mortal Kombat, only in response to the US Senate wanting to come down hard on mature video game content and Nintendo just wanted to fly under the radar (and use it as an opportunity to stick it to Sega by painting them as a gratuitous company with no morals)

Nah, just look at their marketing campaign and online infrastructure from the Wii and Wii U. Clearly aimed towards a family friendly demographic.

Well, it WAS a kids game, but when Twelve Tales: Conker 64 was finished and was ready to hit the stores, they had a big problem, there was absolutely no difference between Twelve Tales and all of the other cute, family-friendly platformer games like Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Kirby and even Rare's own Banjo-Kazooie. But the head of the project, with inspiration from South Park, decided to turn the entire game into the drunken, dirty mouthed, violent, toilet humored, movie-parodied, mature game that we all know today. But I always wondered to myself, what would the game be like if it stayed as a cute, family-friendly platformer game.

This is one of my all time favorite games. brings back great memories the multiplayer was amazing and the different game modes were unique so were the characters and the parodies like the matrix was fun and cool. i loved the dinosaur egg heist as a caveman 🍳 you get to cook the eggs after and have a party then the cut scene shows the caveman relaxing taking a nap after being full from eating then they fart and that killed me every time as a kid 😂 i love how the teddies were nazis and using the katana or chainsaw was awesome. so was gassing everyone during multiplayer games and having to hide n the bunker. sniper shots were dope taking off heads. i mean everything was sick about it. me and my brother (rip) spent countless hours playing this from when i was like 7yr old to idk when probably at least 10 or 11

The sequel Conker's other bad day planned by Rare sounded so awesome. It was to start with Conker being thrown in jail (the tallest room in the tallest tower) because he spent all the kingdoms gold on booze as King. It would have told the tale of Conker in his search to find Berri after her death in the 1st game. Only for there reunion to be bitter sweet because she was turned into a terminator called the "Berrinator" that was sent to kill Conker. Apparently Rare had all the story done and movie references down but only started developing the 1st level before it was canceled.
I love Conker's Bad Fur Day! its one of my more expensive Nintendo 64 games in my large collection from my childhood.

The saving private Ryan was truly a key part of the game: before the game was kinda innocent, killing bees and fighting with toilet paper, then everything changes: night comes and our hero finds himself killing peasants for a vampire and robbing a bank! It was the turning point of the whole narrative

To be honest, it really wasn't that bad of a game. I actually enjoyed building my own vehicles. I think it would have been received better as an original IP rather than slapping Banjo Kazooie on there.

I really dislike how they changed the game from its original style. I preferred the cartooniness when it was complemented by a similar mood, and the cartooniness mixed with the "maturity" makes me feel sick.
Then go play Banjo Kazooie if you want something friendlier. That is the reason why this game became more mature oriented.

I honestly think that Twelve Tales: Conker 64 would have aged better than Bad Fur Day, if I'm being honest. The pop culture references are a bit dated these days and the vulgar humor isn't particularly shocking these days and some of it is kinda gross, like the cows and the prune juice. It's not really funny, just gross and admittedly pretty weird.

I think one of the more strange things is how the n64 version is as vulgar as can be, yet the x-box remake, which has better looking graphics, actually has A LOT of it's content censored, especially words and lyrics, most notably for the song of The Great Mighty Poo.
I say Rare's still dead and never coming back. They had _ONE_ chance and some sort of redemption if they would've made a Wii U port of Rare Replay. Fans were demanding it, and one of Microsoft's Twitter accounts, (can't remember if MS Game Studios or their Xbox One), and they said something along the lines of "we're perfectly fine with Rare making a Wii U port of Rare Replay. Why don't you guys ask them directly?"
So we all did, and what was their response? "Fuck you, fans who grew up with us on Nintendo. Rare Replay's an Xbone exclusive! lulz" ...Well, they didn't actually say _THAT,_ but they might've well have. And they missed a major opportunity with this as well. Not only as this could've been seen as a return of Rare to Nintendo, even if only with the classics they've previously released on Nintendo platforms, e.g., no Grabbed by the Ghoulies, as it was on the original Xbox. And possibly allow them to include games that couldn't have been included XBO version, like the entire classic Donkey Kong Country series!
But no. Even with Microsoft's apparent okay of the idea, Rare refused to tip their hats to those of us who stuck with Nintendo after all these years. And to that, I say *FUCK YOU, RARE! F-U-C-K Y-O-U!!*

It's like, I don't even like Microsoft that much, but they're like "Hey, we perfectly understand you Rare fans want to see all the games they made for Nintendo on their platforms, not ours. Why don't you ask them nicely for a Wii U port of Rare Replay? It's not like we don't already have some of our games on non-Xbox platforms!" And that's we all know that because not only did they promise they'd continue to support the PlayStation versions of Minecraft after they bought Mojang, but they eventually brought it to the Wii U! But then Rare's like "Why would we port our games to Wii U when you could buy an Xbone? What? We developed games for the GBA and DS years after MS bought us? We have no recollection of the events in question! Good day, sir!"
The fact Microsoft was okay with this and Rare still said "no", was a giant middle-finger to fans!
The note on the inspiration from Mario 64: I think what happened was that, even when still working on the Dream RPG concept Gregg Mayles wanted to make a platformer. They simply didn't implement it until Conker had come out first.
The design documents Mayles posted on his Twitter have dates in January of 1997 for the version of Banjo with the fixed camera. Conker would have already been in progress at this time, so the team knew about Mario 64's existence, but didn't jump on it immediately.

It's so weird to see Nintendo ok with all of the mature content in both Conker and Bayonetta but they censor everything in America or won't make these kinds of games themselves.
In 2001, the N64 had his finals years, and Rare wanted to make a game for him. I think Nintendo was too focused on the GC and just said "Yep, Rare, make what you want."
I think for Nintendo, if it's expected to be M rated they don't hold anything back. I think they're more worried when it's T rated, for whatever reason.

“Twelve Tales: Conker 64” looked terribad: waaay too cute and kid-friendly to a nauseating degree.
I’m so glad that Chris Seavor and friends took it in the M-Rated direction and created one of the most-legendary games of all time.
I would actually really like to see how 12 Tales would play out if it was released.
