  • Finally! The tricks that make all the difference! When should you throw a swim jig instead of a chatterbait? What about just throwing a swimbait? What makes one better than another? Its time to find out exactly what each bait is for and when to switch between them!
Chatterbaits are incredible lures! They're ability to catch fish is rivaled by only a few other lures. But do they have a weakness? Of course they do! That's where the swim jig steps in. Understanding the differences between the chatterbait, swim jig, and swimbait will help you catch fish day after day. Learning to use these baits as a system instead of sticking with a single option will allow you to adapt to changing conditions on your lake.
Below you'll find links to all the baits discussed in the video. We've included our favorite colors and weights for each, as well as our favorite trailers to compliment each style. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

One of the biggest advantages to the chatterbait that nobody ever mentions is the feedback you get from the vibration of the bait. The vibration makes the chatterbait really easy for new or inexperienced anglers to feel lite push bites and weeds witch will help them understand what the bait is doing at all times.

Great video as usual, but my curiosity never ends when I know other great alternatives for trailers that for me personally gave so many times great results in tough situations, fished even raw without the regular jigs for them but with ned or offset. And I'm not talking about just Bass cz I'm from Europe :D > for that spunk shad there is Illex aka Jackall // I-shad or I-shad tail and for the creatures there is Scissor comb which not many manufacturers are even getting close to that. Please keep this in mind and perhaps you will give it a try for a next time. Best regards and all the appreciations and respect for everything that you're doing.

I’ve got one tied on all the time and I’m committed to catching a fish with one this summer. I’m wondering if I’m not having success because of the size of bass that are in the ponds. Will a smaller bass (say less than 1.5lbs) hit a Chatterbait?

    • @kirkblackadar7299
      @kirkblackadar7299 3 года назад +1

I started fishing chatter baits this year too man. Out here on the bay of quinte though, bigger fish here. The pre-spawn was great, less weeds here and was great for covering a ton of water finding those fish bulking up for the spawn. I think they will crush it in the fall too. Keep playing with trailers and go for a bluegill profile if your pond hopping. I really liked throwing it in the dirtier water too the bait has a lot of draw power

I caught my PB (7+ lbs) on a chatterbait back in May. But now that it’s summer time, I’m catching more fish, and bigger fish on a black & blue swim jig.
    As always, great video Matt!

I’ve no luck throwing into cover like grass matts or lilies. The jig will make it through, but my braid sits on the cover and my lure comes back up out of the water when I’m retrieving. Will a heavier jig bring that 10-15 yards of line into the water?

What about chatterbait for vertical jigging? I vertically jig for lake trout and they love to chase lures retrieved straight and up. I imagine a chatter bait cranked up through the water column will trigger the chase.
Any suggestions for targeting deep fish with chatter baits? By deep I'm talking over 50'.

Man this video was exactly what I needed because I have been so close to putting this puzzle together on my home lake with shallow grass. Done very well with the jackhammer but I want to have a secondary approach to the grass. The way you described “secondary action” with the proper swimbait trailer was key for me. Ready to go pre fish for next tournament now.

I know older video but I have a question. The ponds I bass fish for small fish are bluegill and stocked trout. Should I be going for just bluegill colors on trailers/lures or should rainbow trout type colors work too? Just trying thinking to match what they should be feeding on

What if you are fishing a relatively clear lake that has grass beds but the grass is all the way up to the surface and it's not clumps but just big fields of grass to the surface and in water from the edge of the bank to like just maybe 4-6 feet deep? Any recommendations for a situation like that? The lake has shad , crawfish, variety of sunfish.

for me in the north i love to throw the chatterbait in open water and light grass . i throw my swim jig through heavy stuff that guard helps so much on the 3/4oz and 1oz . i never caught anything small with swim jigs . i find that if you lift your rod up and make the skirt puff to make a circle ⭕️ then start swimming it again it imitates a shocked bluegill . i get a ton of bites on that . i also started playing with rubber silicone swim jigs have you guys tried those ?

No problem brother. Another thing to remember: The fish don’t know or give one single crap what rod or reel you have. As long as it works correctly and doesn’t break, you will catch em’.
The place to spend some money if you need to, is on lures.

Rarely do I ever disagree with Matt or Tim but a killed Chatterbait retrieve works. Period. In Matt’s mind “that’s not how a baitfish would react” ok well do baitfish turn around and head right for the predator chasing them? No, but that’s exactly what swimbaits and glide baits do and that’s usually when they get smashed. Meaning it may not make sense but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. Killing the retrieve and hoping or ripping off bottom work with chatters, sometimes they are “the” retrieve for that given day. I’ve seen time and time again where I’ll be straight retrieving a Jack Hammer, with reel kicks as Matt explained, I’ll then let the bait fall to the bottom and have a fish that was following but not committing take the bait off bottom. If enough fish are taking the bait off the bottom, you might as well use a jig to save possibly losing a Jack. 2 wks ago I had a 5 fish 22lb 2oz day (northern illinois) and every fish came from taking a Jack hammer ripped off the bottom. If anyone needs proof, ask I’ll post my ig account. I love Matt and Tim but occasionally they’ll get something in their heads where something doesn’t make sense “to them” and completely disregard that it works for loads of others.
