GSXR Buggy - M&B Welding's Junkyard GSXR 1000 Engine Swap Special!

  • Mark of M&B welding took a chance and purchased a "cracked case" '08 GSXR 1000 in late 2019, hoping we could weld any case cracks back together. The pictures we had of the bike showed a mess, the frame was snapped in half and the bike came in 2 pieces. Wires were everywhere. So I began the long process of learning how to rebuild the GSXR platform, as my buggy has a '09 750; how different are they really?
    I meticulously remade the wiring harness and extended it for his buggy, and in the summer of 2020, it was time for MORE POWER. The new buggy frames we built are heavier than the original Black Buggy Mark had. He used the components from that Black Buggy to make the new 2 passenger buggy, and although the '03 750 was super reliable and a blast to drive; there was a 1000 in the garage.
    Follow along on our tragic journey of the GSXR 1000; from when she goes to when she blows, we learn a lot along the way! We believe we cooked our oil by using an oil bypass hose (no oil temp gauge just water temp), then spun rod bearing #4. We also think all of the sand in the motor when we got it might have added to the bearing wear, as I did not split the case to clean out every component. We used a hot power washer to spray out everything we could, but that doesn't clean crank journals! Was that stupid? Possibly? Maybe it's because I put this motor under a ladder during a rebuild so I could suspend the cam chain and manually turn over the bottom end? Superstitious? Who knows...

    monitor air fuel ratios and knock (engine ping) , also oil T

      Good suggestion! We’re changing out the oil pan as that’s probably the culprit; multiple companies make a special pan for this engine as it’s used in mini sprints. Prevents this very issue. Will definitely add some more sensors; what’s measured is managed!

      Best bet is to find a used frame and modify. Check out Protolite Racing! They make an awesome drop in rear end cradles that allow you to bolt in different super bike engines.

    Bad ass little machine. I have a 4 seater with a gsxr750 in it. .I'm trying a FNR gearbox but it's a cheap chinese model and seems to have problems with the HO and torque.

      This was just the engine swap video about a year after construction! My buddy and I built the frames at the same time, I filmed my entire build here: ruclips.net/video/gUA21EH8tkk/видео.html
      I’m sorry about the music! I suck at making videos, definitely noted for the future. In the meantime, turn on CC and mute me 😆

    Is there any chance you can do a complete video of building your buggy with the 1000cc engine all the welds and cuts sizes ect want to build my own but want to get a good idea of what todo first

      @AndyShear  3 года назад

      Would love to get there eventually, but I need to do some 3D modeling first and my day job as a software dev has been taking up all my computer time recently! Take a look at our drift buggy build (ruclips.net/video/gUA21EH8tkk/видео.html), I tried to film the whole build process. My buggy is a swingarm version of this buggy; Mark and I used this buggy as the model for mine. Mark built this thing free hand, we hope to have a modeled design next round we can share! In the meantime, check out KJ Raycing ruclips.net/channel/UCywsYKRDS0ep85ckb2Zwgaw or JimboSLICE XD ruclips.net/channel/UCYvYWVxuMsErwr4qd8GT7ug they both built crosskarts and offer detailed plans!!

    Hey Andy would you be able show me how to build the rear axle with a R1. I want to do the same thing you did on yours.

      Sure! Check out the 5 video build series starting with this video, should cover everything necessary to get started, parts listed in descriptions, hard lessons learned, etc. ruclips.net/video/gUA21EH8tkk/видео.html
