When you get the chance to build a spiral staircase.

- In 2019/2020 I was hired for a project as Finishing Foreman with @naikooncontracting. It was a high end Net Zero house with a lot of details. The centerpiece of the home was a double flight spiral staircase. Generally this work is handled by a stair specialty company, however, I was arriving on the job somewhat early as the roof structure was still not on the building and a couple months from lock up. I arrived on the job prepared for winter framing work which I am not experienced at or mentally suited for to be honest. To my surprise the project lead walked me over to the turret and we had a chat about my willingness to tackle the stair framing while they finished the rest of the roof framing and got the place sealed up. We discussed the conditions being far from ideal but the stairs did need to be in to keep the jobsite productive and efficient as they were the only set in the house. We did our best to keep the wind and moisture out of the turret (which had a temporary roof) and the heat high enough for the glue to cure properly as snow started to fall outside of my "tent". I had a Tyvec gutter with water running through the work area and had to constantly make adjustments to make sure things stayed dry. Sleeps were filled with worry anytime the wind blew. I was quite confident in my abilities but there were small bouts where I worried that I had overlooked something or that the stringers would spring way out of shape once removed from the mould. As far as the geometry goes I had discussed the details a bit with an older colleague who did a fair amount of this type of work and he said "they are the same as any stairs just round" and after laying it out and making an accurate story pole it all made sense. It was go time and I was happy to be doing this rather than framing outside in the snow and rain. Although I did most of this work alone Mike and Parker helped out when it made sense. To this day this is my most ambitious undertaking frame to finish while leading a crew of young carpenters and facilitating trades as COVID 19 hit half way through the project. An experience of a lifetime for sure.
Framed stairs for 40 years.
Conch spirals are challenging. It's so fun you don't want to stop to go home.
Framed my last one in June this year,
I'm 68 and supposed to be retired.
It's becoming a lost trade.
Carpenter since 1972.
I love it!!!!!!
I could learn a thing or 2 from you, cheers.
I was a manual machinist for seven years and have been at Carpenter for 15 years. I would absolutely love the opportunity to work with someone like you!!!
Just stepped into the stair game. And I have about 6 months experience as of now… I got the opportunity to learn and build a spiral staircase like this
It was 2 spiral sets (basement and first floor)
Double laminated freestanding beams they ended up being 4 inches thick.
I consider myself extremely lucky to have been in the trade such short time and I got the opportunity to build a couple spiral stairsets RIGHT NEXT TO THE “Ball Brothers” (the basketball family, lamelo and idk the other brothers.) but this was a house where the foundation alone costed more than most peoples houses 😮
Can’t wait for the next one
My good friend who taught me this is still doing it at 76 yrs old! ❤ God bless!
Hey, I have a question, if you don't mind. Do you remember the old mortising jig for use on open face stringers and if so, do you know of one that is for sale?
Or did you use to make your own custom jig per staircase? Thanks.
You guys can’t even fathom how hard are this to build.
My hat is off to this craftsman!!
Word
well he said it took 6 months to build a staircase so I'm kind of fathoming it
I had the opportunity to watch a guy do one of these in my first year
Word
Yes we can
Especially if it’s 1 1/2 stories high, is built off-site, and then lowered into the house through a hole cut into the roof
Yes I can, I've built them from steel.
Not the ones with the pipe in the middle that the steps hang off, which you'd see in apartment studios etc.
I mean ones like this. Instead of using ply wood. We rolled sheets of steel to the inside and outside diameters and then cut it out. Carpenters came along after and dry walled it. It was disgracefully difficult to build.
As a journeyman carpenter, who has done his fair share of finishing, and built many straight stairs. I also would have the same two answers, to those two questions. My favourite part is when you say, "from there it was just a little trim work." And then show all of the curved wainscotting on the wall. Hats off sir. well done.
That trim work is about as good as I get😂
Literally proves you can never have too many clamps. Anyone says otherwise, show them this. Great Job on the stairs!
Please tell my wife that. She hates the fact that I have like 40 8 ft pipe clamps. She wanted to kill me when I bought my pipe threader and pipe vise. She knew exactly what doors that opened, lol.
@@revparisking I would say it is either a clamp or a employee. A clamp is far cheaper and it does not complain! Clamp's are vital and it is not unusual for even a home woodworker to have about 30
Was thinking the exact same thing
@JamesDeanMichael80 those are just the 8 footers I made by buying the pipe and clamp head and heel combos separately lord knows how many I have between simple grip v clamps to 100 year old wood clamps to those new fangled Irwin slide grip clams. One of these days, I swear I'm going to break an ankle on one because it seems I'm always dropping one at my feet and tripping over it, lol.
@@revparisking aha sounds like you have a good collection though! And some vintage thrown in is always good! I hear you with organisation! Stuff always accumulates so I was literally squeezing space in everywhere, the cabinet kickboards became drawers, the cavity in the stud walls become storage space so I removed lots of drywall and even the entrance door itself is essentially a shelving unit! Building storage solutions always helps build skills as you often need to think outside the box
That’s some skills brother . I’ve been a carpenter for 20 years and the amount of jobs I took that I was under qualified to take , but did all of the proper research and tested my skills is countless . I treated these jobs as a personal challenge and never disappointed the client . I just was voted contractor of the year in my county . Majority of my ability came from the fake it to you make it approach . I won’t lie , I had some anxiety and pressure to rise to the occasion during the process!
My wife’s dad built spiral staircases in leclaire IA. Master carpenter. Took him along time to figure out how to do it. But it was a work of art. RIP Jeff
As someone who has manipulated wood for over 40 years, your wifes old man was most certainly a master carpenter. Radius/spiral staircases are the pinnacle of our trade. Definitely not something to overlook.
I’m from 15 miles north of LeClaire! 🤘
@ryanabbott1104 We just drove through that area on the way to Davenport. We use to live 20 minutes west of the arm pit of Iowa. Lol
There is craftsmanship and there is this spiral staircase. Well done. Thanks for being so humble.
BRO!!!! YOU CRUSHED IT!!! ❤❤❤
@@gmax876 Thanks!
As many philosophers have said. The more you know and the more you discover the more you are humbled by what is you don’t know or haven’t yet discovered. Like stone masonry, steel work and many other crafts that don’t come to mind right now I have found carpentry to have taken me well into this journey. It’s so true that we need to constantly push through anxiety and fear of failure to get to the other side. Once we’ve achieved goals we can look back with a sense of pride and satisfaction but that needs to be accompanied by looking forward with ore and humility. I was going to attempt my first spiral staircase on my very own self build this year. I didn’t feel it was a good idea to stretch myself that far with everything else that was going on but maybe one day. Brilliant video 😊
Greatness takes time. You can't bump something like this out. it's just not possible. It's called craftsmanship for a reason. Wonderful work, man. Absolutely beautiful.
It's absolutely amazing work!!!
People don't realise how ridiculously hard that work actually is
Beautiful Work!! Great commentary! I built stairs for 5 years (trim carpenter for 8) and did several spirals during that time. I did 1 like this one, it's very hard to get your curve perfect, and you have to be so careful not to make any miss cuts because if you do you have to start over on the bent stringers and hand rails.
Hope you start doing some long format stuff.
Hey over here Darkhorse ? I am 100% agreeing on this man’s statement !!!
What do you mean by”long format”?
Full length videos as opposed to just shorts@@Getitogether27
@@Getitogether27they are hoping he makes longer videos
Yes!
It's beautiful.
The choice of side rails and the LED lighting is gorgeous.
Finally, some real craftsmanship. Love that you tell real time also! Nothing great happens fast.
Geometry!!! Skill!!! Labor of ❤!!! And that doesn’t even begin to tell how talented the Artisan is who built this for themself or a real Cool person!!!
My Dad ? An old school master carpenter who built homes from the ground up ; customs often alone or with one other carpenter loved finish carpentry !
I am a finish carpenter !
His motto : Carpenters solve problems or else you don’t become better !
Those are absolutely gorgeous stairs and something you can always look back on !
Whenever someone tells me about a great man ? I state “YEAH, BUT CAN HE HANG A DOOR “?
I can't count how many times I've gotten work from someone who told me they thought hanging a door was easy. I've never attempted a spiral staircase but I'd dam sure love too. This is beautifully done and would work for someone like this in a heartbeat so I could step up my game.
@ you will do good !
Scott Brown Carpentry
Pure skill ! Talent at a completely different level !! Deep respect for this craftsman.
OH BOY !
THATS magic brought to life ! Makes my soul sing !!
OH YES MY MAN!
As the son of a carpenter, grandson of a carpenter i have always felt lucky ,my son is a biological research scientist. And yes he did work along side me for all his teenage years .
We both never built a circular stair case ,im proudly glad to say you have proven abilities my whole family would be lucky to tread upon .
TEACH as much as you can to others ❤. We will all benefit.
Thankyou so much for sharing one of your many master pieces ❤
Love this… the honesty and the passion to do something special -- vacillating between insecurity (fear) and hope… then-reassurance in the reality of the final product-the exceptional job, that only a few could do- and you are the one that did…. This is the most grand example of creating your own luck…😅 through blood, sweat and the drive to do something special…. your “luck“ in your profession after this project, have a picture and simply point👉 no words necessary --
And thanks for the video…
Incredible short. High Quality and Reflective of the content of the crazyness of the spiral staircase.
Wow 🤯 not many men would have taken this on. Your craftsmanship is unreal! Thank you for sharing. It goes to show sometimes you just have to believe and have faith in your abilities.
Theres no words to describe 😢the beauty and craftsmanship and skill to accomplish this. When you love what you do, it becomes artistic, and it very much shows on this project. Amazing 😮🎉. God bless you and the best of health to you and the people around you that support you. May you live a long life to be able to have a great art portfolio to share with the next future generations of achievements.
That is the nicest project I've seen on RUclips. Those stairs came out fantastic
BROTHER the shot of this finished... Absolutely gorgeous. Gosh dang!
With great passion and confidence comes your ability thank the Lord for what he’s given you .
Beautiful work !
I am a skilled Carpenter as well I always love to see other people's work and the challenge is all we are expected. Making something out of nothing and taking pride. What gratification❤
Sweetness. You are not lucky. You definitely, without a doubt, extremely talented! 🎉🎉🎉
Excellent work . Must be hugely proud . Congrats on such a beautiful job . (Imagine the carpenters that built such stairs before power tools) Again ...BEAUTIFUL
Absolutely amazing 👏🏽 🎉
The confidence/anxiety comment hits home! 😳 Absolutely fantastic work!
I have confidence in my abilities, and the lord only knows how many times I have taken on projects/ tasks that I had no experience, but a spiral staircase is another level. I applaud you.
Absolutely stunning. Great job!
Beautiful, very difficult to do, if you say it's not difficult to do please submit photos of completed spiral stair cases accompanied with customer testimonies.
Some staircases are very special to build, It takes a Craftsman genius to accomplish a spiral staircase. It is where all your knowledge and skills, patience and ability, transcend to a masterpiece, A work of art.
I manufacturer stairs in Australia I've made similar spiral design but a fraction of the size. This work is impeccable 👌 it looks absolutely stunning, elegant, grandiose and magnificent! Well done. Perfection 👌
Ps. The theme tune very relevant you put your neck on the line and they put a lot of trust in you and you delivered 👏
Been Carpenter for 35 years..i totally relate, but theres very little i cant do, not bragging but experienced...i remember the days when id build it in my head 10 times before i even showed up to job site...i kinda miss those days..only cuz my body was young and didnt hurt like now...stairs look beautiful BTW😉👍ITS AN ART
Great job. If you’ve never seen it, I recommend looking up Bernini’s staircase in Rome at Santa Maria Maggiore cathedral. 400 years old and architects still don’t know how he did it.
Beautiful. Please do some longer videos man. Music is catchy and all but i think a lot of viewers would appreciate more in depth looks at your awesome work man. Dont need the adhd edits and music but would love a deeper look at your art. Beautiful stairs bro
Amazing craftsmanship❤
Patch and paint make what a carpenter ain’t. Really nice finishes on an exceptionally built staircase.
Beautiful spiral staircase perfect music match for this video excellent carpenter skills
Wooooooaaaaaahhhhhhh. You are the man, well done biting the bullet and getting on with it. Tremendous respect to you, your skill and most of all your integrity to get the job done. Big respect, beautiful finish.
This is fantastic work .
Amazing work and craftsmanship.
This is how we used to make everything. Look at any old building or home compared to now. Great job.
You sir, are a master craftsman it looks beautiful. God bless.
You guys are the American dream. Keep going we need people lime you.
Man! Love to see professionals work💪
This is Art. This is Beautiful. This is what old people mean when they t use the word “ Craftsmanship”. Beautiful.
As a Carpenter for 48+ years now that's the right attitude to have I've built a few custom Staircases. Have I ever built a spiral set no could I yes would they be the Miracle Staircase in Santa Fe New Mexico no but I would GetRdone. I was asking years ago about building a set of 8 foot guitars 🎸 to hang as art in a recording studio I said yes they ended up changing to 13 foot long but there still hanging in the lobby bragging rights Beautiful Staircase by the way
Did my first spiral staircase 52 years ago. Just finished!🎉. Never again.
My hats off to custom stair guys. As a cabinet and trim guy who was born in it 5th gen, kudos to you.
"Just a little trim work"😂 Nice work brother!!
Absolutely beautiful and elegant. Well done 👍
We need more craftsman like u... train more ppl... 🎉 well done!
Incredible 😮
Nicely done.
Wow!
I wish they hadn’t covered up in paint and carpet. The wood is beautiful.
Notice he said, "He spent the next couple of months..." You can't rush greatness. Nice work.
Beautiful work!
@@mnight207 Thank-you!
These jobs make us true craftsmen. Good job
Beautiful work. It's a masterpiece.✊
Wow!! That’s a beaut.
Beautiful work. Your math, layout and execution are on point.
Brilliantly done! I love excellence in craft
Now that my friends is tru excellence and craftsmanship. Very well done sir 🫡
Very impressive, master piece. Being a carpenter, building a staircase and trimming one out is probably the most intricate part of a house build! 😊
Wow, that staircase came out amazing ! 👊👍
Beautiful work. Master craftsman.
A piece of art
Beautiful
Sounds like my life working towards my mushroom business. Some days I can't stop thinking about what to do next. Some days I sit in anxiety thinking this isn't going to work out and be a complete failure. I'm so close to launch its incredible. I never thought I'd be more close to financial legal freedom than now. Never give up on your dreams!
Absolutely gorgeous !
Outstanding. We applaud you
Absolutely amazing skills!
Incredible work, happy to see someone capable of doing this so well.
Straight stairs are tough. A spiral staircase like this is up there with NASA scientist. Beautiful job.
This is truly a work of Art! Wow! Just Wow!!!
You are a amazing carpenter I am a carpenter and I know how hard that is and your. first time and that is truly amazing I will be watching for more
What a gorgeous staircase! Great job!
I am blown away. I don't know anything about carpentry but that is really incredible what you put together. I would just love to know how you actually bent the wood to build that. And you know how to build one but you never did one before; not exactly sure how that works😅😅. They hired you anyway and I am certainly impressed!
@@timmycrw91 I had a lot of transferable skills. The wood is bent in thin layers that are all glued together to make the thick stringer.
@ wow!! I guess you gotta understand that I don't think anybody would really know this stuff except it now it pops up on places like RUclips, and it's really fascinating. Especially to those of us who are fairly useless when it comes to building anything😂😂
Beautiful! Great work!
I immediately subbed. 🤘🏼
Youre an artist my friend. Ive been a framing carpenter and creative carpenter for 22yrs since im 18 and ive been around long enough to know when someone knows wtf they are doing!!
Wow nice work 😍😍😍
Thank you, I needed this motivation 🙏
That's beautiful. It was almost more beautiful watch and you make it than seeing it finished
Good job.I have built many of these most of which were Hampton style, open treads on one or both sides with wooden handrails that were also built on sight. I can appreciate the fun in doing this it is a lot of work and definitely requires more than your average carpenter Skills.
Amazing work and talent.
Not short of AMAZING 🤩
Brother that's dangerously close to master level on your first go!!
I was born in to it , well played sir!!!
I would say use pin nails on the sheathing to the spiral frame, although it adds alot of work in filling, you know itll never pop with both anchors and glue keeping it more level. In years Time it might need the pin nails reset and filled then "painted" but minimal work if you just use a clear coat and maybe add some new pin nails where the sheathing/siding pops
Great job brother! They look beautiful and will for many years to come I'm sure.
Beautiful, good work!
Unreal work brother. Much respect.
That staircase is pure elegance
I hope you’re compensation came in abundance 😊
That is so beautiful!!
You might not be an engineer, but this is engineer level design. Fantastic work!
Overthinking will ALWAYS be one of man's greatest downfalls.
Nice job.....we can do more than we think if we just push ourselves
Amazing, beautiful work! And the scroll work in the railing is also very nice, and probably just as challenging. Looking at all that extraordinary work in that entire "turret", sorry but that light at the top just isn't anywhere near the kind of fixture that should be "topping off" this incredible work!
