when i was little, our neighbors had a line of Russian Olive just on their side of the fence. my sisters and i, and sometimes the kids from down the road, would play in them sometimes. thank you, Phil, for bringing back a little bit of my childhood. this piece turned out so beautiful. you have a knack for bringing out the best a piece of wood has to offer.
I have 5 Russian Olives in my driveway! they are the most spectacular tree! Blossoms are intoxicatingly fragrant in June and the leaves are silvery blue and the tiny fruit can be used for making jelly. The guy who comes to trim them every second year turns the wood for utensils and art! What a tree! You've done it justice!
Hi Phil.... for someone who doesn't like spindle work you sure made an excellent job with the vase.... lovely colour and grain... I liked the shape... I'm glad that you are safely home and hopefully no damage... great video... take care...All the best.....Andy
I really like the ginger jar shape and that you tried something out of your comfort zone. Glad the shop and home survived the fires... Well and you too!
The Grain is Magnificent. The little branch nubs made for plenty of knots. Hope you find interrest in turning more like this... Big Thumbs Up my friend...
Ok, Dr Bowl Guy...now you are a spindle guy! Wonderful job. And without a spindle steady. Kinda makes one tense. Glad you are safe from the fires. Thanks for the education with the Russian Olive. Just a beautiful piece. Jay in Tennessee.
Wow, that turned out great. That is a neat grain, I wasn't expecting it to be so dark. I love watching you do spindle turning. It's not in your comfort zone, yet you still do so well. I find that encouraging to always try and retry and retry things.
You sell yourself way too short, Phil. A person with your skill on the lathe can take any piece of wood and make it a work of art regardless of the orientation. This one is proof positive. So glad you took on the challenges of this spindle turning. The grain and hue are really pleasing. Thanks! Also glad you are safely back home.
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Your honesty about how you feel while working on these projects is refreshing. We all feel inadequate from time to time and yet, somehow, we tend to get it done anyway. You are doing a great job. keep it up.
Thank You Phil , Thank You Crystal from South Dakota...Man Phil I love that ruffing gauge, quite the monster tool !!! For the record Phil > YES U R A SPINDLE TURNER!!! < you just haven't done it enough to feel like a spindle turner, that's all...Nice artistic camera work on the spindle drill chips (see u r an artist )...Like everything about it, grain, finish, shape...lets see...ah...it is a Russian Olive so perhaps make several more one fitting inside the other (or perhaps not, ha).....Something different & thank you (happy birthday Phil) tm
Haha, nope, no stacking vases from me! The thing is, I really like wood vases so I suppose I'll keep trying but it's a real effort. Thank you, my friend, it was a good day!
I'm sorry you had to be evacuated and very glad indeed you're safe and back home. The vase is superb. The grain is sumptuous and you're right about the crack looking as if it should be there. You can do classic elegance. Thank you for sharing and see you soon.
Once again, rabbit out of hat (or vase out of log). Keeping it simple of line without beads and coves worked to your turning strengths instead of against. Nicely done, and a good addition to your video collection!
I am not surprised that you found a beautiful vase in that less than beautiful Russian Olive branch that I sent to you. Thank you for turning another piece of that wood! I love it!
I like to get a paint strainer bag , fill it with sawdust, and shavings, then shake out the fine dust into a container, and use it for filling cracks! Nice work!
Well you did a wonderful job turning something that you don't like doing. So now you have broken the ice. Can't use that as an excuse anymore. Great vase wonderful grain the knots make it stand out
Love the vase. It is so unique in color and wood grain. Wish I lived closer that way I could purchase a couple of your works. God bless glad you are safe from the fires.
Hi Phil, That was a lovely piece of turning especially, as you say, as you don't do spindle turning. The shape is perfect and allows the grain to flow along the piece. One trick I have learned when filling cracks with CA and sawdust is to put one thin coat of sanding sealer around the crack fist and let it dry. Then apply the CA and fill the crack. The sanding sealer stops the CA from staining the surrounding wood to the crack. Look at me trying to give the Great Phil advice on turning. As others have said I'm glad you are safe from the fires and that everything was ok when you got home. Take care Phil. Cheers, Huw
I swear! I would think you turned nothing but vases. This turned out so beautifully 😍 be proud of yourself and your amazing talent. You are a wood master 👏
You just proven yourself wrong - it is graceful, elegant, classical beauty and if Ihear once more that you don't know what you are doing, you will hear me screaming all the way from Australia. Last year our town was surrounded by the fires, I know what being scared is like. Glad you are ok.
You know Phil means business when he brings out the BFRG! LOL. Gorgeous little pot, Phil! The grain structure and differences really set this piece off. Billy
Beautiful grain and features revealed as you turned the piece. The line made by filling that crack even suits the shape and colour of the vase. Nice work! Cheers!
Great to hear you're ok Phil. Very different from your usual turns but equally splendid. Looks really tactile. Stay Safe and thanks for sharing. Jules, Droitwich, England.
I have a long about 3 ft long and 12 inches in diameter that I have had for over 29 years. One of these days I going to get into it. I like the looks of the wood. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice vase Phil. It reminds me a little of Egyptian canopic jars. Hope you're not planning to put someone's innards inside it. Thanks very much for this video. Best wishes from Ohio.
Lovely vase in every respect Phil. You repeatedly say you are not a good spindle turner, well, this job makes a mockery of that theory mate, you can hold your head high after this piece. Your vase has great shape as you continue your normal practice of looking for what the wood has to say to you. The grain is brilliant & the filling of the crack this time was a master stroke as it seems to 'tie the vase together' along with the excellent finish. You made comment about not being able to read your name etc, on the bottom. I have mentioned it before & will do so again & that is that you can get silver pens & also white pens. Both would work well for you on the darker woods. Great job from the now multi-talented 'Shady Acres Woodshop' guy. Glad you were not directly affected by the fire. SO pleased to hear that. Stay safe & well. Don, from South Australia.
As always, Don, your comment makes me blush! 😊 The truth of the matter is, I CAN spindle turn but I'm so uncomfortable with it, not knowing or understanding what comes next, that it is a real chore. But, it does open up opportunities for specific pieces of wood so I will occasionally commit some time to it but I don't have to like it! LOL! Thank you, my friend!
Don't know if I've seen you turn a vase Uncle Phil, but it's a gorgeous piece! I especially like the fact that you can actually seen the texture of the rings👍👍👍
That is a really beautiful vase, Phil! Wow! A 2 inch roughing gouge! That is just amazing. Someone is bound to say that guys with big tools just want to show them off but I’m not gonna do that because that would be immature! LOL! Great video, buddy! 👍👍

Thats the biggest roughing gouge I’ve ever seen. What a beast you could take that gardening 😁👍🏻 I’d have split that along the crack made some bowl blanks and called it a day 😊
Okay, Mr. "I can't do graceful shapes" Phil-- You just gracefully and masterfully proved yourself wrong! Magnificently, as well, let me just add. Russian olive wood has a very distinctive smell, one which I find distasteful, but the wood is gorgeous! 😁
Wow, thank you, Dave! I couldn't smell any particular aroma but I think my smeller is broken. Ah, well, at least I don't have to smell my own cooking! 😊
But the smell of the 'end' result of your own cooking .... well, we won't mention that, right? 😁 (💩) oops (there will be something in your email box in just a minute. i am jazzed!)
Modesty personified. I would have chucked that cracked old stick, but you didn't. Respect. I was dreading hearing you say ' I'll fill the crack with resin' like a lot of the other turners do. But you did the old joiners trick and won. Sounded like a pretty coarse grained bit of timber, a bit like the Elm we sometimes get here in Scotland. Look after yourself and yours. Regards from Fife.
That was a tough piece with the crack making for a greater risk of flying apart...you made a very wise decision which is just another example of your talent and eye for design and craftmanship....even the finished color looks "olive"! Be well and stay healthy.
Certainly a very interesting grain pattern Phil. And the shape of the vase is perfect for it. The grain seems to flow very evenly to the bottom. Looking at the knots there is one to the left of the crack that looks like a little vase. Also a great choice on filling this crack it does not look like you tried to hide it but more like highlighting it as a feature. The Acks gave it a great finish as well. Great job my friend looking forward to the next one! Take care, Gary

Nice looking piece as usual. As i have said before, I really like your approach to the vagaries of the individual pieces and how you turn what others would consider a problem into a delightful beautiful piece.
Very nice vase I love that shape and the colour and all the different design that came out of the woods is beautiful and the crack is beautiful also very nice job for someone that can’t turn vase you underestimate yourself and practicing would give you confidence

Howdy Phil That Olive wood is so nice , wish I could get my hands on some , along with every other exotic wood . So dry that olde crack should not open any further . I like that Ack's .... use it a lot The shape is nice ...put some wooded flowers in it ...maybe make a large flower out of the left over piece . I have turned a few vases ...it was easy to fill the vase up with sand and sealer and let it set for 10 minutes or so ....soaks in and 100% covered in side . pour out the remaining into a separate jar and still can be used .Quick and easy .... Hope everything OK in your area now , wow 7 days , take care of that cut on your arm too keep on turnin'
I never thought of sand and sealer, Bruce. Leave it to you to come up with the great idea! The smoke is mostly gone, just burned trees and vegetation. We were really quite lucky in this area for such a large fire. Thank you my friend! 😊
Another well done Phil. Outstanding job as always. According to Tuffy, Happy Birthday is in order. Hope it is or was a great day. Thanks again for sharing.

Great job my friend looking forward to the next one!

I have turned a few vases ...it was easy to fill the vase up with sand and sealer and let it set for 10 minutes or so ....soaks in and 100% covered in side . pour out the remaining into a separate jar and still can be used .Quick and easy ....
Hope everything OK in your area now , wow 7 days , take care of that cut on your arm too
keep on turnin'
I never thought of sand and sealer, Bruce. Leave it to you to come up with the great idea!
The smoke is mostly gone, just burned trees and vegetation. We were really quite lucky in this area for such a large fire.
Thank you my friend! 😊
