Your Fave is Trans: Lake from Infinity Train (Character Analysis)

  • MY TWITTER AND TWITCH USERNAMES ARE DIFFERENT NOW!
Lake from Infinity Train, who went by MT at the beginning of her journey, has a lot of story elements that code her as trans. In this video, I analyze the show to take a look at what exactly makes Lake a trans character.
Trans representation in cartoons in seriously lacking. Good thing some of our favorite characters from shows are actually trans, when you take a hard look at them! "Your Fave is Trans" is a series meant to look at beloved cartoon characters that have trans-coded stories, and analyze why they're actually trans.
(Disclaimer: I am not trying to imply that a character I claim is trans was intended to be trans by the creators. I am merely trying to take coded story elements I observe, and compare them to real life experiences that I or others have had as trans people. I am not implying that the things these characters do automatically make them trans, nor am I saying that you have to have all these experiences to be trans. Every trans person experiences their journey differently. I'm merely trying to draw parallels, find my own identity reflected in the characters I love since trans representation in media still has much to be desired, and have a good time. Don't take it too seriously.)

The idea that other people policing Lake’s identity literally comes from their reflection to attack them feels like that voice in my mind, when I see my reflection, saying ‘if you’re comfortable with your body, you’re not non binary and also you can never be anything but your assigned sex’. But obviously the body dysphoria interpretation rather than social dysphoria is also very valid and more relatable for some trans folks.

Lake fighting so hard to seperate from the false reality of her own self and being blocked off right when she's finally at the cusp of true personhood is probably the most viscerally relatable allegory for being trans I've seen.
"You're not trans because there was another person you used to be without complaint, and that's the person we raised, that's the person we know, and we love you too but at the end of the day we miss her and love her more."
Lake shouting "look at me! *I* am a person! *I* deserve a number" broke me. That's exactly what it feels like.

Throughout the season, I couldn't help but think of Lake as trans.
Personally, I have interpreted the flecs to be a representation of dysphoria (I mean, they invalidate Lake and often appear in mirrors).
There is a point where Mace tells Lake something like the fact that she may have run away from her life to be a reflection of Tulip, but now she is "reflecting" Jesse. I interpreted it to be that she refuses to reflect female stereotypes, but now "dysphoria" tells her that she reflects male stereotypes (so it comes close to non-binarity)
She kills Mace, she "kills the dysphoria", and in the end she escapes from the train and can just do whatever she wants without worrying about what she reflects or not, she is just her own person.

Great video. As another trans person, I also related to much of Lake’s story. When I was first watching season 2 of Infinity Train, I was so convinced that Lake was going to come out as trans by the end that I avoided using pronouns when talking about her. Even if the similarities between Lake’s story and trans people’s life experiences aren’t intentional, I think it’s valuable to have these kind of themes in kids cartoons. Trans kids who watch this show might be able to relate to Lake which could help them with self acceptance, something that I personally know can be difficult sometimes.

  • @caodepedra

this is such a great analysis! i'm not sure if anyone already pointed it out but i also love to think about the specific name lake picked for themself. during their whole life on the train, mirrors and all other reflective surfaces were a complete danger to them, something they had to escape from all the time. after they leave the train, they don't have to fear the flecs anymore. when lake (person) sees themself reflected on that lake (body of water), that's the first time they get to see their reflection without feeling scared or threaten. the fact that their name, lake, comes from this moment, a moment of FINALLY feeling comfortable and safe in your own reflection, is something that i find brilliant.

  • @simplyever-poet6349
    @simplyever-poet6349 3 года назад +21

another connection I have which is kind of small is when Jesse asks is Lake knows his reflection and she replies "we dont all know eachother." Its like when someone asks "do you know *trans person*" (It doesnt happen often for me but I've been asked that before, and once, someone outed a closeted trans people to me thinking they would be okay with it because I'm trans -which, no. Never do that. You always ask them when who they're okay with knowing first)

Anyone notice how many times in season 2 lake is called “girl”? I think it was probably something higher ups wanted so that ppl wouldn’t think lake was non-binary. In my country, it's impossible to register a name that is a common noun (except a literal handful of those that already have a long tradition of being used as names), while in several English-speaking countries it seems to be not only allowed but widely accepted. By accepting the fact she is reflective instead of trying to ignore it she reflects jessie's number and thus breaks the catch 22 one-one was locked in.

Something that I only realized recently-
Another allegory in the show is that the train, while it represents different things at different times, also represents Lake’s home. They’re escaping an abusive household. One that would have gotten them killed if they didn’t, literally, have the helping hand of a friend who WANTED to help them escape. Who offered them a haven from the torture of where they came from.
It’s also not like getting off the train means Lake isn’t gonna have problems- it’s just a different, probably less violent set of problems. Like when Jesse’s little brother ogles them.
The Flecks represent the cops, an abusive/controlling family, but also the inner demons of trans people who, if they’re not able to get out of a bad situation in time… never get out of that situation.
Not all, and it’s implied none, of the other “slivers” were able to escape the train. (Why else would the flecks exist if there haven’t been others?). They died running from the flecks. *Many of us* have died running from the flecks.

Would that be transmasc or transfem? It's just my personal opinion, but I don't think Mettaton is transfem, because he seems pretty confident and self assured in being male. He also shows that you can be feminine and still be a man, because what you like doesn't determine your gender :)
That's just my opinion though, so it's fine if you disagree.

I'd wanna mention some nice detail and that's the magnet mirror Tulip puts on Lake. Many trans people have to maintain hormones since their bodies don't naturally make them, in some cases through hormone patches. In this case, the magnets work as a way to avoid Lake to get trapped again, and he makes sure this are always with them at all times which can be an allegory of trying to avoid the biological hormones to kick in.
Besides, he goes into a radical change, from looking girly with long hair and skirts to making a punk themed outfit and completely shaving his hair. Before, I could at least see him as a girl, but after the style change it's hard to remember that he remains being a girl in the series

This video was really good, I didn't fully get the Lake is tran's thing (An if I'm being honest its still a little weird with the mirror & prime world stuff) and the video helped me get it a bit better. Though one small criticism (Bedside's a few weird thing's of the script) is that the color of text you used during the disclaimer at the beginning blend's in to the background in a few places making part's of it unreadable, the majority of it is readable but if you could use a more contrasting text color in the future that would be really appreciated.

Okay first of all, Lake is easily one of my favorite characters of all time and her arc is easily one of the most thoroughly trans-coded ones I've ever seen. It makes my enby ass so freaking happy.
Second of all, with regards to the last note, from what I've heard there may be an animated adaptation of this amazing webcomic called "Magical Boy" that's centered around a trans protagonist so we may very well get a series that outright states it's a trans-centered story

  • @texanzeppo256
    @texanzeppo256 7 месяцев назад +1

Thank you for sharing this! I knew next to nothing about the series when I first watched it, but I immediately clocked (ha) that Lake's story was a trans allegory, and experiencing Lake's journey actually played a small part in me coming to terms with the fact that I'm also trans. It's so gratifying to see other queer folk interacting with this truly special story and relaying their own experiences, so thank you for that.
I do disagree with one thing in particular: I don't see Mace's argument as intentionally manipulative / gaslighting. Yes, he's trying to attack her sense of reality, but my read is that's because he has completely dedicated himself to the disinvestment of ALL reflections' identities. Like a cis person vehemently lashing out against trans/nb folk for simply existing, Mace sees the existence of someone like Lake as inherently absurd because her existence threatens his ideological project and the rigid segmentation of reflections from primes.
Everything he says about the train and the circumstances of her emergence from Tulip are completely true, the difference comes from a fundamental philosophical disagreement on the very nature of personhood: Mace denies Lake's in exactly the same way that he denies his own, because to do otherwise would be to challenge his entire world view and the order it provides (the order from which he benefits) from the bottom up. If Lake has to challenge the entire world to validate her existence, then that's what she's going to do.

I'm very cis, so maybe I'm not seeing something, but I felt that if Lake is a trans person struggling with their identity (and against the world that makes it hard for them) then Mace isn't a cis in this metaphor but rather a trans with highly internalised transphobia. Perhaps that's because even before I've come across the "Lake is trans" interpretation (which I love but wasn't able to see myself upon first watching) and saw the whole mirror world subplot in more general terms, the flex police seemed to represent those people that are part of the oppressed group but willingly help keep the oppression going in exchange for some minor privileges and eventually believe that the system is right.
I mean flex police weren't actually reflecting anybody any more. They were in between the mirror world and the prime world in the sense that they were their own persons, but their independence was limited and sanctioned by the powers that be. So in other words they were allowed a little bit of freedom in exchange for keeping everybody else in line.
This is something that happens a lot in the real world. People often compromise because defying the system is bound to come at a great personal cost and they'd rather have a little bit than risk everything in a rigged game. And accepting the way the world works as inevitable and therefore fair in some twisted way is also a common coping mechanism.
Anyway, I've often come across people that naturally should be allies but chose to side with an oppressor because it's easier that way. For me, Mace and Sieve were all the women who slut-shame or tomboy-shame other women; all the queer folks who criticize other queer folks for "flaunting it"; all the people whose ethnicity is marginalised and who complain about those who refuse to let go of their culture and customs; all the fat people who make fun of those even fatter; all the people with unusual hobby putting down those for whom it's a real passion etc. etc. etc.
But perhaps that doesn't translate very well onto the trans metaphor?

The main reason i started watching this show was for Lake, and Ryan and Min-gi. I don't know if it'll ever be entirely clear that these characters were written to be queer, but there are too many obvious parallels for it to be not true. As someone who is still questioning their identity, Lake's story really resonates with me. Writing the journey of a trans character, especially through a metaphor, is a tricky thing but the writers of Infinity Train absolutely nailed it!

There were quite a few moments during the show that I felt the same way as Lake. It’s not easy for cis people to understand trans issues, not because they don’t care, but because the whole idea of being trans is foreign to cis people. It’s a kind of thing most people never experience. I’m a fairly binary trans person, and I’m still learning.
