Lake (infinity train) being trans for 16min

- Here is a compilation of all the moments Lake, from infinity train, acts like as trans person would.
Hope you like the video, I had a ton of fun making it !
So... about Lake being trans :
(I'm gonna use she/her for her pronouns as her transidentity is not canon)
-First of all, Lake is a popular name for trans masculine/nb people. She also has quite the androgynous/masculine look. But let's not focus on that too much.
-This book's theme is about the identity, and the name of the characters is often discussed (Alan Dracula, Terrance the toad, Lake...) so it would make sense that the main character of this season is trans.
-Lake is always compared to her past (Tulip), whether it is by Samantha the cat, the Flecs or any other character, despite doing eveything to change her look. Some characters even deny her entire identity, like Grace and Simon on the Apex car or Mace in the wasteland, as trans people in the real world experience daily.
I personnaly think that the Flecs are a personification of dysphoria : they appear on reflective surfaces only to remember Lake that she's not real and that even if she was, she would not be accepted in society.
I really liked this season a lot and related more and more to Lake as a trans person every time I rewatched it !

Lake is such a great example of writing a trans coded character without making it explicit that they're trans. Their whole struggles with either forcing themself to live their life as someone they aren't, or risk getting hurt is a very real challenge that so many trans people face- as well as them constantly being told that they aren't really a person (akin to misgendering) by those around them.
I think saying she’s transcoded is kinda far fetched (unless it was confirmed or smth). For example, I have abusive parents and I can relate to those things, like being forced to live a life they want being at risk being told nothing I want is real etc. It’s not about me, I’m sure a lot of other people have the same struggles, not only trans. Idk how to phrase it but I’m not here to start a fight, I just can’t understand what specifically indicates that creators hid a message about trans people.
@@ratspew932 Maybe it's one of those things where you can find your own meaning from it. You know, have it relate to your own struggles, whether that be what transgender and non-binary people feel, or what people who've experienced abusive relationships feel, or something else entirely. Personally, I feel like this character is relatable to anyone who struggles to live as who they are, and people who've gone through identity crises.
@@ratspew932
Check the description, there are some things that are relatable there for trans people. But we know is not canon, but it can be interpretated like that.

I *wish* I had the confidence Lake has. Just yelling/ranting when things are unfair or they're being treated in a way they don't like. I mostly just bottle that shiz up. I hate being called a girl but I just don't do anything about it because social anxiety and transphbia.
That’s honestly what makes fiction/stories like theirs are so beautiful, that catharsis the viewer gets out of seeing Lake share so many similar struggles but with the assertiveness/courage that’s challenging - or just often impossible - to exercise in real life, it’s powerful stuff. Considering it might have been motivation for people watching it to come out as trans/nb after seeing Lake push through it, Id say we need a few dozen more shows like this asap 😭❤️ sorry for the rant, I’m just really happy seeing so many people in the comments get so much out of this show, it’s really beautiful

You deserve to be called what you want to be called
If they don't respect your identity, it's their fault and you have all the rights to say "no, don't call me a girl!"
I know nobody asked, but I feel this very much because when people use “she” too much in one sentence to describe me or use “Ms/Mrs” jokingly, it kinda makes me grimace. I’m more used to my name being said (despite barely anyone knowing I’m nb) but it feels so strange. It hurts even more if it’s my own friends, when we’ve gone over this with them at least twice, one lasting an hour and they still haven’t digested it. They’re genuinely good people, I will say, but it just seems they’ve just forgotten and I just don’t want to say anything because I don’t want to get one of my friends in trouble again.

I don’t know how OP feels
@@lunezzzy4606
I can touch on the topic by offering you some of my perspective:
In a world with new tech and old biology, we weren't designed to communicate through text. People are able to say just about whatever they want without consequence, as opposed to in-person, where you to have to look people in the eye to communicate with them.
There's many things to take from that... Young people deserve to know just how harsh, careless, and willfully ignorant people can be, in-person or on the monitor. Regardless, we should also recognize the difference. Not to say you're clueless to that fact. (We should study this stuff in middle school psychology or something, anyway.)
Regardless of whether someone associates your trans perspective with illness, associates it with challenges, or associates in with diversity of opportunity, anyone with any principals can see that whatever it is you're dealing with is not easy, and criticism, generally speaking, ought to be handled with a certain amount of care, if it's worth anything. (I'm sure you're irritated when it isn't.)
Obviously since what you deal with is very rare, (though decreasingly so, I hear,) you could use a hand, and that's the general thing I recommend: Do the best you can with what you have, and ask fo help when you need it. As well, continue to push head-on into different perspectives about trans issues, because no one of us, individuals or groups, has all the answers.
Of all 3 seasons of infinity train. It is my favorite moment, and I believe that it is the best moment in the whole series.

Part of Mollymauk’s story is that he woke up one day with no memory of who he was. Everything inside him was “empty”. And that’s the only word he was able to say for a while. Until he met people who misinterpreted it for “MT”, as his initials. Then he gave himself the name Mollymauk Tealeaf.

Edit:to the cissies whining under my comment, Lake is canon trans, Owen basically said that he wasn't allowed to say the word "trans" but the character Lake is 100% intended to be a metaphor for trans people, if that hurts your feelings, too bad I guess
I'm so glad that the video helped you see what i saw :,D
Were did you get that idea? Because they shaved their head and don't like being told who they should be? Because dosen't make someone a transgender
I think trans experience is just one of the many things that can relate to be different than someone told you to be.
It can also be about general independence form controlling families or partners, it includes trans experience and also every behavior, every look and every identity you wanna be.
That's what I like about lake so much.
She shows what many people have in common and how tribalism, seperation or being unwilling to learn from eachothers can make you blind and not see that someone right in front of you is going though something you can actually understand and isn't so different than you make them out to be.
@@SK-ib5hi no I think its a lot of metaphorical things, I just connected them too
•Lake spent most of her life mirroring Tulip, a person who they didn't want to be but had to mirror because that's what they are *supposed to act*. She only started to become who they actually were once they came out of the mirror(closet)
•Lake was treated like a criminal and denied respect(or human rights) for something she didn't think was wrong
• There were also some scenes that were parallel to trans experiences. The scene where she tells Jessie why she is being hunted down feels like a coming out scene, Jessie asking uncomfortable questions about Lake and her body, people constantly telling Lake that thier not a person because they weren't made as a person, being called slur like words(like sliver and some others that I can't recall), being treated as less than humans when accomplishing the same things as passengers, etc.
@@SK-ib5hi I think Owen confirmed it (Non-binairy)
"Technically I am a 'criminal', but I didn't do anything wrong"
That line and just the whole fact that Lake is an outcast from the Mirror World because of how they think, how they act and that they want to be more than a reflection is just so fricking relatable to me as a trans person. I love them so much and I don't even watch this show (yet)
This!! I struggle a lot with this feeling. Like no one wants to know the real you, like they want you to be hollow and reflective so they can see only what they want to. Even when you cry and say over and over you are a person, that you just want to be yourself, and all they do is blame you for not being the character they made up to replace you. They ignore and cherry-pick your personality to fit into a reflection and then get so mad when you break it. The only crime I committed was being myself and I’m reminded daily of it. Thank goodness for the people who live unapologetically, they give me hope. Someday I will be a person I can live with, and those people who would say otherwise will be far behind.
@@michaelstaab2872 Do you actually know what relate means?
They relate to the character on a personal level, they aren't saying that they are living and copying the character behavior if that's what you think.
They said:
I relate to her (Lake) because she's treated as bad and dangerous just for who she is and her wanting to live her own life in peace.
That's how a Trans person usually feel when they get attacked or insulted just for being themself and that's what relate means.
They are living their life and find comfort in someone who is experiencing someone similiar.
If they relate to her I can't see why you should care when you don't even understand the word relate.
Since that comment wasn't directed to you you could have easily ignored and continued with your life, who they relate to it's not your problem and they aren't doing anything bad with feeling connected with a character.
@@michaelstaab2872 pov you don’t know a single thing abt dysphoria
@@michaelstaab2872 you don’t know anything about LGBT+ people do you?
In many countries around the world being LGBT+ is illegal, or people can kill/abuse/harass us and not be punished at all so we have to hide who we are at all times. Even in many states in America there’s no protection to LGBT+ students, they can be banned from sports teams or clubs or get bullied by their peers and nobody has to do anything because the law provides zero protections for them.
by that definition every criminal we have, didn't do anything wrong if you think about good or bad a different way
This is easily a career best performance for Ashley Johnson. I can't imagine any other role topping it.
One of the most significant parts imo about Lake's story being a trans allegory is that their journey didn't end in them leaving the train because the system allowed denizens to get numbers, they ended up leaving the train solely because of a loophole on an individual level that gave them that exit. It parallels with the real world experiences of many trans people: not that they're able to transition because the societal systems in place accept that, but because they're fortunate enough to experience that while many others like them are left without that lucky chance.
The fact she wasn't even meant to be out of the mirror dimension and still she got off the train. This is why Lake is one of my fav characters

@Mirror good on you for realizing, but NB people can go by any pronouns!

I'm just now realizing that Lake was actually my big gender awakening moment for me. Like, I was introduced to IT through compilations of fun moments, but Lake stood out to me and made me watch the show, and watching it I didn't really pick up on all of the queer narratives, though I came in knowing it was a queer coded character, but I don't think I truly understood the references and subtext that the story had until I started actively going through that.
When I watched the season, It was the tipping point of my questioning, I was going by they/them but I was just starting, but now, in the middle of large moments, dealing with people interacting with me and my own thoughts at this stage, I see myself in lake more and more (haha mirror jokes) and this compilation of all those moments really put it into a perspective for me.
Lake getting her exit is still one of the best things of the whole series

Came out as non-binary recently and am seriously considering using the name Lake. The nb vibes radiating from it are fantastic.
I don't understand non binary etc. I think everybody has feminine and masculine traits and that there are no rules being a male or female. Not being a typical male or female doesn't mean you're neither gender or a new gender.
I didn't ask. But since you did, I will say this: if someone prefers to be not be referred to as "she" or "he", it's pretty easy to accommodate. And if you yourself aren't non-binary, then that's really all ya gotta do. It's just polite.
And you are correct, there are no "rules" to being male or female. Well, not *official* rules. Just the kind that are social and you might be ostracized for not following. Still, the reasons for why someone is non-binary run a little deeper then that: it encapsulates a feeling of not adhering to a single gender identity. It is a large spectrum and the place people fall on it is their own journey of self-discovery. Therefore, I cannot summarize it concisely. Please, speak to more competent scholars and non-binary people with more knowledge than I.

honestly this is so real for trans people, and especially my enbies out there. being trans is so terrifying, and this is one of the most accurate representations of that that ive found. such a great ending, and so many small details that people miss. fantastic.
I like that they choose Lake as their name because it fits as a nonbinary name, but also that's the first time they were able to look at their reflection on a reflective surface without being attacked. Everytime they look in a mirror, water, or a shiny surface the flex come to attack them. The only way they were able to see themselves was by looking at their hand which is where their number is supposed to be. They no longer have to look at the constant reminder that they are stuck, and they don't need to worry about being attacked. They can now look at themselves as who they are. Lake.
Edit: Holy jesus I completely forgot I commented this. I'm glad you all enjoyed my analysis of Lake. This made my day so much better. Happy Pride everybody!!!

At 0:46 Lake holds a red jelly bean which I assume is a reference to the red pill from the matrix. The Matrix was initially meant to be a trans allegory and the red pill would represent an estrogen pill :)
I love that the train seemingly like, MADE Lake for the Chrome Car, as well as the Flecks, because their existence just doesn't follow logic if you keep poking at it, which is what I think Jesse's constant questions are meant to show. I identify with Lake so fckin much. "I am a person" makes me cry everytime. They were a HUGE part of me realizing I was nonbinary.
I felt trans and enby vibes from Lake. Mainly cause them not having a number can equate to not having a gender but the transliness is definitely there.
I always figured the not having a number thing as not being recognized by the system as as valid as a cis person is (in other words, institucional transphobia) and her wrecking all the bots down as literally raging against the CIStem demanding to be respected and have the same rights as any other person. But anyhow since their very first appearance back in season 1 Lake always had like trans/nb tattooed all over her face for me hahaha

He did not intend to write the character as trans to begin with."
the entire second season is very heavily based around lake wanting to be their own person, not fitting in with what their society wants them to be, having to run and hide because of who they are, it can very clearly be an allegory for the trans experience and with their character design in season 2 lake can very very easily be seen as trans or nonbinary, just because you personally dont see it doesn't mean you should invalidate the view of the tens of thousands of people who disagree with you, especially when it gives them a sense of belonging that they may not get otherwise.
