My old netbook was running at a crawl with Windows 10 bloatware os. I reinstalled Windows 7 and the increase in speed is vastly different to Windows 10. However my external harddrive would not allow the transfer of files to it. I tried to resolve the issue with no luck. I installed Windows 10 on 128GB flashdrive to transfer files. This works very well for me.
Make a fresh install of Windows 10 mate, completely format the drive and use the official windows installer tool shown in the video, I've never had any bloatware once this has happened. I also overall recommend replacing any old laptop/netbook drivers with a 128/256gb 2.5" drive, any HDD that's in that thing is not worth saving the $10 it takes to replace it unless it's a known perfectly reasonable drive tested by you

A free plug. Try the Patriot Rage range of flash drives, really fast and inexpensive. My 64gb reads at 200mb/s and writes at 100mb/s. This is modern hard drive performance. Yes I know the write is a bit down on a modern hard drive, but it is swings and roundabouts because the performance doesn't decline with the amount written.
I'd love to know if there's performance imrpovements with the Pro version. VHDx support is nice I think... I've been using RUFUS with a fairly nice flash drive, but I always run into big hangups...

If you make a, say, Windows To Go - Win 10 Pro Retail\OEM USB drive then if you boot it on a system which previously had an activated version of Win 10 Pro Retail\OEM, then it will be activated (if it has internet connectivity). The same for WIn 10 Home. However, if you connect the USB drive and boot to a different system that had not been previously activated with the same version of Windows, then it will not activate and you will have the 30 day grace period. So you cannot simply plug it into any system and expect it to be fully operational (especially after 30 days). WinToGo is really intended for volume licence versions of Windows (Vol Pro or Enterprise) used within a company/school which has purchased a volume licence, so that you can 'hot desk' using any computer and Windows will always be fully activated.

I've never heard of that tool, but I belive all that would do is copy over the installation files from the ISO to the flash drive, and I believe that this tool optimizes the installation for USB Flash Drives, so simply cloning a fresh install of Windows will result really bad performance. If anyone else knows different, please let me know lol
Rufus is for making Windows INSTALLATION media or loading live OS .iso images to flash. WintoUSB is designed to provide a live Windows operating system which is different than mere installation media. You should have known the difference before posting and so should the ignorant people who upvoted your comment. Rufus is excellent software which I use to create Windows install media and live Linux flash drives for installation or live use, but it is not designed to produce a live Windows operating system.
It would be wiser to boot a live Linux distro (Knoppix is designed for live use and has the Chromium browser) which will not run any Windows malware. See the Pendrive Linux website for some of your many choices. Windows will mount your existing Windows drive. Knoppix will not unless commanded and being Linux isn't a malware farm. Of course if you are used to VMs they make more sense then rebooting into a live USB OS. Just use a Linux virtual machine.
Thank you for that Britec09 ! I downloaded and installed WintoUSB but, when I tried to follow your procedure, it would not support a Windows 10 installation onto a USB hard drive - believe it or not. So I bypassed WintoUSB and simply cloned the drive of a PC running Windows 10 onto a USB HDD. It worked well on another PC but when I tried to update to the latest version of Windows 10 (May 2019) it failed with the message : " You cannot install Windows onto a USB drive" . Will you be able to access the internal hard drive inside the computer? Mine says in disk management that it was offline because of some policy made by the administrator.
Did you actually boot the USB Flash drive on a real system? It used to be the case that Win8/10 would only boot from a VHD or VHDX file from a Removable USB drive? If it does actually boot on a real system, what version of Win10 are you booting to?
Yes, Steve, I booted it up on my main system and I download the latest Windows 10 version from their Windows Creation Tool, it done the first boot then restarted and booted straight up. Was using a SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0. It runs OK to be fair, not as slow as I thought it would be.
Interesting. What Win 10 build was it? With Win 8.1 and Win 10 first version and TH2 it didn't work (everlasting spinning circle of dots) if you used a 'Removable' type of USB flash drive unless you used a VHD file. I guess MS have fixed this issue?
Thanks. I made a WinToUSB drive yesterday with 15063 too as a flat-file install and it worked fine. So it seems that the issue has been fixed in recent Win10 versions. But the problem will still be there in Win8.1 and Win10 TH2 versions (which is why WinToUSB defaults to VHDx).

The good thing is when you download from the Windows Creation Tool it gives you the latest version of Windows 10 so hopefully they won't run into that problem.

My work has 6 identical laptops but they run in French, we only use 3 or 4 programs to do our job. Would this be a good solution to run a personal installation in English for me on all six laptops? When first plugged in does it run through the welcome to windows hoopla and install the drivers for the computer like it would on a normal clean install?
The version of Free that I downloaded and installed has different rules for what constitutes 'free' than what you show that was from their web site as well
Cesare Vesdani I tried the same procedure for Windows 7 and it didn't work. I changed the BIOS into legacy mode because UEFI is not supported by Win 7 and i did change the boot order but it gave me a BSoD when i tried to load it

when i used microsoft website to try and download .iso file first had to enter my 25 digit key number but even after that it stated ...purchased computer with windows already installed...blah...blah... or something to that effect. anyway would not let me do it. Anyway if one does find a way to download the .iso file and then use that software to put it on usb then it should also run on a computer with no hard drive at all? I installed it on an 8GB Flash Drive by editing the WinToUSB.ini file. Specifically changing the MinimumVHDSize from 14 to 1. This will even work on a 4GB for Windows 7 lite.

So that's what wanna buy usb 3.0 card reader but before it I wanna sure I it works faster and its enough to work as sata hdd 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm for me. So do u have any clue ?

i found it would only create the the O/S on a USB3 drive, will not work on a USB 2 as you get an error, great work and easy to do, thanks

I did it with Rufus. You cannot encrypt but it is fairly simple.
Georgie Orman if u use rufus do u have change any of the default rufus settings or just leave the settings alone?

Didn't run for me. Ubuntu works fine, but windows 10 didn't. The PC just boots upp as normal and ignores the USB stick
I have a doubt I have a normal iso file download from Microsoft official website. Is it suitable for this method?
when i used microsoft website to try and download .iso file first had to enter my 25 digit key number but even after that it stated ...purchased computer with windows already installed...blah...blah... or something to that effect. anyway would not let me do it. Anyway if one does find a way to download the .iso file and then use that software to put it on usb then it should also run on a computer with no hard drive at all? Also can't one just as easily use Rufus or macrium or Yumi to do the same thing?
Is it supposed to just jump from 0 to 100 at one point? Cuz mine hasn't moved from 0

You need to clone the drive.
i getting a new mini pc it comes with win.10 on a 64gb mSATA...but I want to install it on a 120gb mSATA do i install it 1st then use the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool and WINTOUSB to a usb stick will that install win.10 on the new Hdrive.. nice vid
It won't work: Disk or partition space is insufficient. my usb is 16GB

I think that you don't need that third-party software they built it right in to windows look for it in control panel on windows
How big does the usb have to be?
at less 10GB or so i have a 32GB
@@Eliyuh9757 It gave me an error when i tried to do it with a 16GB USB but 32GB worked.
@@retrosmut I tried 1 terabyte USB and it worked
I installed it on an 8GB Flash Drive by editing the WinToUSB.ini file. Specifically changing the MinimumVHDSize from 14 to 1. This will even work on a 4GB for Windows 7 lite.

Hi, once downloaded onto an external USB, do you have to change the bios configuration to run it, can't you just choose the usb drive from the pc?

some say chrome is blocked by Microsoft to make it's user use Edge and not 3rd party browser.

I have samsung eve 4k SDXC card ( 100mb read / write ) and I installed into it as windows to go ( win 10 64 bit ) with usb card reader but my usb card reader is usb 2.0 that's way it too slow kind of u can not imagine it. So that's what wanna buy usb 3.0 card reader but before it I wanna sure I it works faster and its enough to work as sata hdd 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm for me. So do u have any clue ?
