Using the Wrong Haimer Tip

  • I was using a 4 mm Haimer tip instead of the 0.2 inch one required by my imperial Haimer 3D Taster end finder. As a result, part dimensions were wrong and I was scratching my head trying to understand why they were off by about 0.22 inches. I show where that number comes form, and also aligning the tip after changing it.

Haimer should color code the red ceramic to match tip size.

They really should. And their numbering system for parts doesn't make it easy to tell. But once you've seen the difference, it's pretty easy to tell by looking.

I once came within an ace of ordering the wrong replacement size and so I'm familiar with how easy it would be to get onto the wrong one. Yah, yah, should be able to tell the difference, etc., but when you're thinking about other things like getting back to machining, it's something that might not cross your mind. Thanks for your demo of how to center the probe. The Haimer instructions that came with mine didn't match my model and all of the videos I've seen also don't match my model until yours came along. That may inspire me to go to work on it as I haven't a) checked it and b) mine has a 0 offset in it that needs to be corrected.

I had a similar situation with my Renishaw probe. I had crashed the probe and when I replaced it I got the run out to be less than 3μm, but over time the adjustment drifted. So even though the control was able to compensate the remaining run out, the drift caused part alignment issues even when indicating a part center. Pretty pricey repair, but the probe pays for itself with reduced setup times. To troubleshoot the problem, I indicated my part using the old school dial indicator edge finding method. Then compared that with my Renishaw's probe cycle and found the 0.0025" coordinate system offset. I guess moral of the story is trust but verify your probes, and you can always fall back on the dial indicator.

Interesting that even the Renishaw can run into this. I guess the moral is to check every so often.

JohnSL for sure, because regardless of the brand, it's still just some little set screws you've used to center it.

Those Haimer units are gorgeous, unfortunately way out of my price range.

2:26 yes tip should be longer if ball is bigger so it allways move same ammount that 2mm in your case you used 4 mm when u have imperial. you just calibrate 0.022 needle to left or right side then 0 is correct lol. its that easy xD
but can you even measure that low. you cant just measure raw part and say i was take this ammount bottom part now take same ammount up part. better is measure that milled feature and tell 0 here

I believe someone wrote a song about this "Haimer Time"?

Dang...after almost two years without breaking a tip, I did it this morning. Now rueing how much of a cheapskate old Randy was for not buying a second one then. Fortunately looks like just a day wait time.

What happens when a horribly stupid unit system gets used at all by anyone? Bad things, of course. Please stop using inches.

Man. I love your videos and respect your bravery to put yourself on youtube, but please don’t drink the KoolAid and fall into the clickbait video thumbnail crowd.

For the first part, thanks! For the thumbnail, I'm guessing you're referring to the part on the left with my slapping my head? If so, correct, I don't plan to do this often. For this one I was having fun (at least that's what I was thinking). For the most part I plan to have the project itself by the main part of the thumbnail. But if I ever stray to the dark side, please let me know.

Darn metric system. Even after all these years it's still causing trouble. Or it it I'm unable to adapt. Take care.

Or, darn imperial! I really wish the US had gone metric back in the 70s when there was such an effort. I really hate trying to figure out which is larger: 3/16 or 5/32. I have to think about it each time.

Hey over the pond here in the UK :) it works just fine LOL but I draw pcb's lots of chips still made with old imperial machines so 200th is a common measurement for me :)
