    Becky, I really want to thank you for your inspiring content. It's thanks to you that I started canning jam, and on my tiny 4x8 balcony, I am growing radishes, carrots, tomatoes, herbs, and much more to come! I even joined a collective garden in my city. Big thank you for showing us that we can grow food and be more self-sufficient, regardless of what space we have to work with!

      I also appreciate how Becky inspires us to become more self-reliant and that she does it in a calm, cheerful way. She's not a fear monger.
      I've stopped watching prepper channels that are based on conspiracy theories and fear. They depress me. (I consider myself a "prepper" but am not paranoid about it. I don't run around like I'm about to have my head lopped off by pruning shears when I don't find the case of canned green beans I wanted.)
      It's just my own theory, and I may be wrong, but I think a lot of the people who are drawn to these channels get a delicious thrill from being frightened--like they would if they read a spooky Stephen King novel. Because of this thrill seeking behavior these channels can become addictive. The viewers need their daily jolt of Adrenalin. Viewers who watch gardening videos are the opposite.
      I do like the channel, "Appalachia's Homestead." The gal who has the channel is extremely blunt about getting prepared for increasing inflation and our deteriorating economy but she, in general, keeps her sense of humor. (She considers herself a "prepper.")

      Absolutely awesome. There is always a way. For those who want to grow more neatly indoors try the Park Seed Biodome for seed starting. Instead of messy soil, these use planting plugs fitted for styrofoam blocks. A bit on the pricey side ($49 for a starter set) but so worth it and so well made. With an LED light strip and heat mat you can easily grow leafy greens, lettuces and even Pak Choi all year round in them. A real game changer for me.

Just a suggestion and maybe you already looked at this idea - but I saw another video where they put a gutter on their hen house and made a rain catchment system to help provide water to their chickens. I don't have any experience gardening or chickens but I just thought it was cool and thought it might help with not having to attend the girls everyday ;) Love your channel!

    Hi Becky....love how your mushrooms are spreading "all over the place". i think it looks kind of rustic and homey that way but if you want them to keep growing and spreading please stop pulling the mushrooms up by the roots. Just cut them off and leave the roots to grow again and spread. Pulling the fruits ups by the roots doesn't allow the runners to keep growing.

    • @ferniek5000
      @ferniek5000 2 года назад +7

      At the beginning I thought this too, but I think mushrooms grow and spread by mycillium which propagate when they have spread throughout the medium. Not quite like the roots of a plant.

    • @MK-ti2oo
      @MK-ti2oo 2 года назад +4

      This is not the case at all. It does not hurt the mycelium at all, in fact, often the disturbance in the mycelium from pulling will initiate further fruiting. This is kind of akin to pulling an apple off the tree including its stem, the tree doesn't die or stop producing because you pulled the stem with the apple.

    • @tinacarr9498

I’ve been mulling over what to do with all the time I now have on my hands. Your videos have inspired me to begin canning again, something I haven’t done since my 20’s. I’m also trying my hand at growing some veggies and herbs. Nothing on the scale that you grow, just some container growing this year. “I over planted this bed but that’s just what I do” 😂 SAME girl, same! I over plant every year but it always works for me! And I also forget what most of my seedlings are even tho I swear I will remember. Haha! The fun adventures in gardening! Your beds look fabulous, can’t wait to watch it grow over summer! ❤❤

    Aaargh, those pesky deer! I have so little success trying flowering shrubs in Central Texas. I use deer resistant plants recommended by my County extension agency & Texas A & M. Even so, they will put some up, root & all and eat the flowers & leaves because its drought. The local say all bets are off on what the deer won’t eat! Must have deer fencing for vegetable beds!

    Wow! You're fast. I am so inspired to have more garden space and start canning again. Last year we planted cantelope for the first time.Two of the three seeds didn't take so we only got four melons. They were soooo much better than store bought. Totally organic, as well. The only fertilizer we use is composted farm manure from a friend, She has horses, goats, sheep and a donkey. Everything we plant in it does wonderful. Love from Gresham, Judy

    I made a feeder out of a 5 gal bucket and 45 degree pvc pipe 2 1/2 inch diameter and it worked great until I upgraded to 4 inch pvc and all the birds thought they found a new open diner. I wouldn't mind but the organic layer feed is $47 a bag, Now that summer is here I can put a tarp over the chicken run and get the feeder back out. I can't tarp in the winter due to snow loads. Your feeder looks like small birds would not be able to access the feed. If you get a chance to try Thai Basil, it is very nice and has a spicy flavor,

    I don't have room for a garden like your, but you still have inspired me over the last year to grow some things. So far I have strawberries, green peppers and summer squash. Love your videos as always, especially the cooking/freezer meals and preserving your harvests.

    Hi Becky. We found a feeder for our hens that works on a treadle. They stand on the treadle and it opens and then closes when they step off. Just for info they are called grandpa feeders.

    A tip for you Becky from someone from the inner city of Amsterdam, so I have no experience with chickens 😀. When you collect eggs in a metal bowl, just put a cloth on the bottom so the eggs are less likely to break.

    Oh wow .. That's an awesome feeder SoilSista. My husband made one for my girls. He used a 5gal bucket, cut the bottom out and added a water catch pan wider than the bucket. It's working great, I only feed our girls every 3-4 days... But this is nice ❣️

    I want to try this pink banana! I hear so many good things about it... It's funny you mentioned rain! During our Friday Night live I said it hadn't rain here in Savannah zone 8B in about 3 weeks. It did rain on the other side of town but not in our neck of the woods. While we where live I said I WISH IT WOULD RAIN! Then I told my husband I felt like a Temptation thinking about the song. Ha! Still no rain today I may go out and do a rain dance. Ha! Thanks for the video SoilSista we appreciate you

    OMG yes, bird insurance! I started big jim pepper seeds, hardened both of the plants off, planted them in the backyard and the birds ate them the next day. :( I had to replant by direct sow...I hope the birds don't eat them again. I planted some Zinnia based on your videos and 2 of them just sprung tiny petals! ❤️

    We made those feeders with plastic tubs and PVC pipe. Works excellent. Our quail are messy eaters, worse than our chickens and it keeps them from pooping in their food.

    Put Irish spring bath soap out where deer are a problem. They hate it. Shavings or net bags.
